Abstract
We report results of a search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS) with the silicon detectors of the CDMS II experiment. This blind analysis of 140.2 kg day of data taken between July 2007 and September 2008 revealed three WIMP-candidate events with a surface-event background estimate of 0.41(-0.08)(+0.20)(stat)(-0.24)(+0.28)(syst). Other known backgrounds from neutrons and 206Pb are limited to <0.13 and <0.08 events at the 90% confidence level, respectively. The exposure of this analysis is equivalent to 23.4 kg day for a recoil energy range of 7-100 keV for a WIMP of mass 10 GeV/c2. The probability that the known backgrounds would produce three or more events in the signal region is 5.4%. A profile likelihood ratio test of the three events that includes the measured recoil energies gives a 0.19% probability for the known-background-only hypothesis when tested against the alternative WIMP+background hypothesis. The highest likelihood occurs for a WIMP mass of 8.6 GeV/c2 and WIMP-nucleon cross section of 1.9×10(-41) cm2.

Abstract
Developing a preclinical canine model that predicts outcomes for hematopoietic cell transplantation in humans requires a model that mimics the degree of matching between human donor and recipient major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes. The polymorphic class I and class II genes in mammals are typically located in a single chromosome as part of the MHC complex. However, a divergent class I gene in dogs, designated dog leukocyte antigen-79 (DLA-79), is located on chromosome 18 while other MHC genes are on chromosome 12. This gene is not taken into account while DLA matching for transplantation. Though divergent, this gene shares significant similarity in sequence and exon-intron architecture with other class I genes, and is transcribed. Little is known about the polymorphisms of DLA-79 and their potential role in transplantation. This study was aimed at exploring the reason for high rate of rejection seen in DLA-matched dogs given reduced intensity conditioning, in particular, the possibility that DLA-79 allele mismatches may be the cause. We found that about 82% of 407 dogs typed were homozygous for a single, reference allele. Owing to the high prevalence of a single allele, 87 of the 108 dogs (∼80%) transplanted were matched for DLA-79 with their donor. In conclusion, we have developed an efficient method to type alleles of a divergent MHC gene in dogs and identified two new alleles. We did not find any statistical correlation between DLA-79 allele disparity and graft rejection or graft-versus-host disease, among our transplant dogs.

Abstract
Forty-five non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) were examined for the presence of K-ras mutations in codon 12 using RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) and ARMS (amplification refractory mutation system) assays. The RFLP analysis consisted of a PCR and subsequent digestion of the product with BstNI. Three adenocarcinomas and one adenosquamous carcinoma were shown to have mutations at codon 12. All of these samples were also examined using the ARMS assay for mutations at codon 12 and second base G to A transitions at codon 13 of the K-ras gene. The same four samples were confirmed to have a single base change in codon 12. No G to A transitions were found at codon 13. The four mutations were: one G to C transversion, one G to A transition and two G to T transversions. All mutations occurred at the second position of codon 12 as shown by the ARMS assay. Both of these techniques are rapid and reproducible for the identification of mutations in the K-ras gene and have potential for use in cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
To assess the ability of three genitourinary medical centres to clinically identify primary HIV infection (PHI). Cases of recently acquired HIV infection, identified using the Health Protection Agency (HPA) avidity assay on all HIV diagnoses from January to August 2009, were investigated by case-note review. Sixty-four individuals were identified as PHI using the HPA avidity assay. Of 64 individuals, 31 (48%) were identified clinically. Imperial College identified 8/26 (31%), Guys and St Thomas' 15/27 (56%) and Brighton 8/11 (73%). Clinical suspicion of PHI was associated with reported unprotected anal intercourse (P = 0.017), seroconversion symptoms (P = 0.0004), a negative HIV test within six months (P = 0.024) and avidity assay result availability (P = 0.0169). Seventy percent of PHI cases missed had a documented risk factor. Thirty-five percent of those clinically identified with PHI were documented as informed of the associated enhanced infectivity. Suspicion of PHI was low despite documented risk factors and recent HIV-negative antibody tests. Counselling to prevent onward transmission was suboptimal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In the UK, one-third of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals are unaware of their diagnosis, and of those diagnosed a similar proportion have late stage disease. To address this National guidelines have been introduced promoting HIV testing across all medical specialities. We investigated HIV testing patterns in an inner London area with high local HIV prevalence, to identify missed opportunities for HIV testing and its consequences. METHODS All human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) tests performed in 2008 at Guys and St Thomas' NHS Trust virology department were reviewed. Tests were stratified for location of request. Case-note review was carried out on all hospital HIV-positive diagnoses outside the genitourinary medicine (GUM) or screening settings to establish the circumstances surrounding the test, and missed opportunities for previous HIV testing. RESULTS A total of 40,883 HIV tests were performed in 36,395 individuals. Three hundred and fifty-four (1%) tested positive. Excluding those from GUM or screening settings, 34 (2.8%) of the 1225 inpatients, 17 (0.3%) of the 5303 outpatients and 68 (1.12%) of the 5746 from primary care tested positive. Nineteen (41%) of 46 evaluable hospital diagnoses had presented to local healthcare services within the previous 12 months, 17 (37%) with an HIV indicator condition, but had not been tested. Of the 5303 outpatient tests conducted, 3148 (59%) were performed by either fertility or renal specialist teams. Other specialties conducted relatively few tests. The mean cost of admission for those diagnosed as an inpatient was £36,625 (range £331-223,000). The total cost for the 12 inpatients, who had presented to services in the preceding year but had not been tested was £439,500. CONCLUSION Despite large numbers of HIV tests as screening tests in GUM and antenatal settings, relatively few tests occurred elsewhere with profound costs. Missed opportunities to access this high-prevalence HIV population is concerning and urgent engagement of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare systems to increase HIV testing and prevent late-stage diagnoses is underway.

Abstract
We report results from a reanalysis of data from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. Data taken between October 2006 and September 2008 using eight germanium detectors are reanalyzed with a lowered, 2 keV recoil-energy threshold, to give increased sensitivity to interactions from weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with masses below ∼10 GeV/c(2). This analysis provides stronger constraints than previous CDMS II results for WIMP masses below 9 GeV/c(2) and excludes parameter space associated with possible low-mass WIMP signals from the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT experiments.

Abstract
ABSTRACTGood dispersion of oxide ceramics in organic solvents can be achieved using many different dispersants. Several types of dispersants, including fatty acids, coupling agents, polar aromatic compounds and polymers, are discussed to illustrate the important phenomena. Many new problems arise in actual slips during ceramics processing; these are briefly discussed.
