Abstract
A 1.86 W cw single-frequency 1319 nm laser was produced by using an 885 nm-pumped Nd:YAG crystal with a compact four-mirror ring cavity, for the first time to our knowledge. The Nd:YAG produced a slope efficiency of 21% and an optical-to-optical efficiency of 18% with respect to the absorbed diode pump power. A near-diffraction-limited beam with M(2)=1.2 was achieved under the maximum output power.

Abstract
In this paper, a new neural-fuzzy approach is proposed for automated region segmentation in transrectal ultrasound images of the prostate. The goal of region segmentation is to identify suspicious regions in the prostate in order to provide decision support for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. The new automated region segmentation system uses expert knowledge as well as both textural and spatial features in the image to accomplish the segmentation. The textural information is extracted by two recurrent random pulsed neural networks trained by two sets of data (a suspicious tissues' data set and a normal tissues' data set). Spatial information is captured by the atlas-based reference approach and is represented as fuzzy membership functions. The textural and spatial features are synthesized by a fuzzy inference system, which provides a binary classification of the region to be evaluated.

Abstract
Using first-principles calculations, we present a comprehensive study on the atomic and electronic structures of metal adatoms (noble metals Ag, Au, Cu and alkali metals Li, Na, K) adsorbed on a [Formula: see text]-Ag (hereafter [Formula: see text]-Ag) surface. We found that adsorption of noble and alkali adatoms can induce significant structural changes in the topmost Ag layer. The most striking and interesting results are the immersion of the noble and Li adatoms into the substrate Ag layer and the finding of the most stable configurations with three adatoms incorporating into or being adsorbed on the surface dependent on their atomic radii. We also found that the almost empty two-dimensional free-electron-like band s1 and its band folding s1(*) of the original surface band s1 of the [Formula: see text]-Ag surface split into a gap at the surface Brillouin zone (SBZ) boundary with adsorption of an adatom. The two surface bands gradually move downwards and the s1 band is gradually filled with an increase of coverage. The s1 band is fully occupied with the largest band gap ∼ 0.25 eV between the s1 and s1(*) bands at the critical coverage of 0.14 monolayers (ML) [three adatoms in a [Formula: see text]-Ag (hereafter [Formula: see text]-Ag) unit cell], which corresponds to the most stable adsorption phase. Although the adsorption configurations are different, both the noble and alkali adatom adsorptions give rise to similar electronic structures at low coverages, indicating a free-electron-like character of the adsorption surfaces.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is the most common and life-threatening form of status epilepticus (SE). The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features of CSE in western China. METHODS Convulsive status epilepticus patients hospitalized from January 1996 to October 2007 were prospectively observed. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of prognosis. RESULTS The average age of CSE patients (n = 220) was 37.5 years (SD 20.31), 50% of the patients had a history of epilepsy. The primary cause of CSE was central nervous system infection (32.7%), followed by discontinuation or reduction of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs; 15.5%). The median duration of CSE was 5 h and median duration of seizures before treatment was 2 h; both were longer in rural patients than in urban patients (P < 0.05). The fatality rate on discharge was 15.9%. Logistic regression analysis showed the duration of CSE [odds ratio (OR) 1.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-1.07], a history of epilepsy (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.14-0.89), and respiratory depression (OR 5.96, 95% CI 2.49-14.24) were independent predictors of CSE prognosis. DISCUSSION Central nervous system infection and AEDs withdrawal in epilepsy patients were the most important causes of CSE. There is a large gap between antiepileptic therapy in China and European Status Epilepticus guidelines.

Abstract
Intraosseous transcutaneous amputation prostheses (ITAP) rely on the integrity of the soft tissue-implant interface as a barrier to exogenous agents, and in the prevention of avulsion and marsupilization. This experimental work aimed at the in vivo evaluation of soft tissue attachment to Ti alloy (Ti6Al4V) transcutaneous custom-made screws treated by a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method. Prior to implantation, the surface of the MAO treated implants was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The experimental model comprised implantation of 16 transcutaneous screws (two groups: MAO and machined (control); total eight implants/group) in the medial aspect of the left tibia of eight female goats. The animals were euthanized at eight weeks and the samples harvested and processed for histological and histomorphometrical analysis of soft tissue attachment to the implant surface. Significant higher soft tissue attachment was observed in the MAO-modified group compared to the control. The in vivo data indicated that MAO-modified Ti alloy could be a useful biomaterial for tissue engineering and benefit applications where bone-anchored transcutaneous implants are used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To report our operative findings regarding the annular ligament in paediatric Monteggia fractures and to propose treatment recommendation for Monteggia fracture. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 35 children with type I and type III Monteggia fractures were treated operatively. The radial heads were all explored surgically in this series. The interposed ligament was stretched out of the joint space and was reduced around the radial head. In some of the patients, the joint capsule was repaired. Sixteen ulnar fractures were managed with open reduction and wire fixation, and 13 broken ulnas were fixed by plating. Six ulnar fractures were greenstick type and were treated by closed reduction and external fixation. RESULTS All the patients were functionally excellent at the 6-month follow-up in terms of bone healing and the range of motion of the elbow joint. No redislocation or subluxation of the radial head was found until in the last follow-up. No heterotropic ossification was observed in any follow-up radiographs. CONCLUSIONS The annular ligaments were intact in all paediatric patients with type I and type III Monteggia fractures and the ruptures were transversely on the joint capsule at the lower margin of the ligament. Most of the annular ligaments were interposed in the radiohumeral joint even though the radiographs showed reduction of the radial heads. We recommend reduction of the annular ligament in paediatric patients with Monteggia fractures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-prandial worsening of symptoms as well as adverse reactions to one or more foods are common in the patients with functional gastrointestinal diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD). However, the role played by true food allergy in the pathogenesis of these diseases is still controversial and there are no well-established tests to identify food allergy in this condition. OBJECTIVE To investigate serum food antigen-specific IgG, IgE antibody and total IgE antibody titres in controls and patients with IBS and FD, and to correlate symptoms with the food antigen-specific IgG titres in IBS and FD patients. METHODS Thirty-seven IBS patients, 28 FD patients and 20 healthy controls participated in this study. Serum IgG and IgE antibody titres to 14 common foods including beef, chicken, codfish, corn, crab, eggs, mushroom, milk, pork, rice, shrimp, soybean, tomatoes and wheat were analysed by ELISA. Serum total IgE titres were also measured. Last, symptomatology was assessed in the study. Results IBS patients had significantly higher titres of IgG antibody to crab (P=0.000), egg (P=0.000), shrimp (P=0.000), soybean (P=0.017) and wheat (P=0.004) than controls. FD patients had significantly higher titres of IgG antibody to egg (P=0.000) and soybean (P=0.017) than controls. The percentage of individuals with detectable positive food antigen-specific IgE antibodies of the three groups did not show any significant differences (P=0.971). There were no significant differences between IBS patients, FD patients and controls in the serum total IgE antibody titres (P=0.978). Lastly, no significant correlation was seen between symptom severity and serum food antigen-specific IgG antibody titres both in IBS and FD patients. CONCLUSION Serum IgG antibody titres to some common foods increased in IBS and FD patients compared to controls. But there is no significant correlation between symptom severity and elevated serum food antigen-specific IgG antibodies in these patients.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of rituximab combined with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP) in Chinese patients with newly diagnosed diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The study comprised a retrospective analysis of patients treated at a single center. Patients received four to six infusions of rituximab (375 mg/m(2) per dose) on day 1 of each cycle of CHOP chemotherapy. CHOP was initiated on day 3 of each cycle; cycles were repeated at 21-day intervals. A total of 82 patients with a median age of 45 years (range 18-76 years) was included. The overall response (OR) and complete response (CR) rates were 90.2 and 70.7%, respectively. The estimated 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were 56.4 +/- 8.3% and 74.1 +/- 7.4%, respectively. Patients with International Prognostic Index (IPI) scores < or = 2 had significantly higher OR, CR, PFS, and OS rates (p = 0.01, p = 0.02, p = 0.01, p < 0.001, respectively) compared with patients with IPI scores >2. The hematologic toxicity was mild. Five patients with a history of chronic hepatitis B experienced a reactivation of viral hepatitis. The rituximab-CHOP combination was effective and well tolerated in Chinese patients with newly diagnosed DLBCL.

Abstract
Arsenic has recently been identified as an effective drug in the treatment of newly diagnosed and relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia. Indeed, arsenic trioxide combined with all-trans retinoic acid shows a synergistic effect. Mechanistically, arsenic targets the key leukemogenic protein PML-RARalpha, setting up a new example of molecular target-based cancer therapy.

Abstract
One hundred twelve patients with geriatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML), refractory or relapsed AML, or myelodysplastic syndrome and refractory anemia with excess of blasts in transformation (MDS-RAEBt) were entered into this study to receive CAG (aclarubicin and low-dose cytosine arabinoside [Ara-C]in combination with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor [G-CSF]) with the objective of evaluating the efficacy and tolerance of this regimen. Low-dose Ara-C was given subcutaneously at a dosage of 10 mg/m2 every 12 hours on days 1 to 14. Aclarubicin was administered intravenously at a dosage of 14 mg/m2 per day on days 1 to 4 (CAG regimen A) or 7 mg/m2 on days 1 to 8 (CAG regimen B). Recombinant G-CSF was given subcutaneously at a dosage of 200 3g/m2 per day on days 1 to 14. We demonstrated comparable overall complete remission rates for the 4 groups of patients: 30.8% (8/26) in the elderly patients, 48.4% (30/62) in the refractory AML patients, 44.4% (8/18) in the relapsed AML patients, and 38.5% (5/13) in the MDS-RAEBt patients. Of the 52 patients followed up, the 12-month progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method were 40.73% 3 8.15% and 42.85% 3 8.23%, respectively. The median PFS and OS times were 9.0 3 2.2 months and 11.0 3 1.6 months, respectively. Toxic effects were very rare and mainly consisted of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia due to myelosuppression; approximately 70% to 80% of patients had neutropenia or thrombocytopenia that exceeded National Cancer Institute grade II. Nonhematologic toxicities were not observed in this study. The CAG regimen seems promising, with acceptable toxicity, for the treatment of various categories of poor-prognosis AML and MDS-RAEBt.

Abstract
Absence of estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) is the hallmark of most hormone-independent breast cancers. Previous studies demonstrated that reactivation of PR expression in hormone-independent MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells enabled progesterone to suppress cell growth both in vitro and in vivo. We determined the whole genomic effect of progesterone in PR-transfected MDA-MB-231 cells. We identified 151 progesterone-regulated genes with expression changes > 3-fold after 24 hr treatment. Most are novel progesterone target genes. Real-time RT-PCR analysis of 55 genes showed a 100% confirmation rate. Twenty-six genes were regulated at both 3 and 24 hr. Studies using translation inhibitor suggest that most of the 26 genes are primary progesterone target genes. Progesterone consistently suppressed the expression of genes required for cell proliferation and metastasis and increased the expression of many tumor-suppressor genes. Progesterone also consistently decreased the expression of DNA repair and chromosome maintenance genes, which may be part of the mechanism leading to cell cycle arrest. These data suggest potential usefulness of progestin in combating ER-negative but PR-positive breast cancer and indicate that progesterone can exert a strong anticancer effect in hormone-independent breast cancer following PR reactivation. The identification of many novel progesterone target genes open up new avenues for in-depth elucidation of progesterone-mediated molecular networks.

Abstract
The genetic mechanism underlying six palatability properties of cooked rice and three physico-chemical traits was dissected in 66 BC(3)F(2) chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs), using a complete linkage map in three successive years. The CSSLs showed transgressive segregation for all traits studied. Significant correlation was detected among most palatability traits. A total of 25 QTLs for the nine traits were identified on nine chromosomes, and many QTLs affecting different quality traits were mapped in the same regions. Six QTLs--qLT-8 for luster, qTD-6 and qTD-8 for tenderness, qIVOE-6 and qIVOE-8 for integrated value of organoleptic evaluation, and qAC-8 for amylose content--were repeatedly detected across the 3 years. Phenotypic values were significantly different between the recurrent parent, cultivar Asominori, and the CSSLs harboring any of the six QTL alleles across the three environments, indicating that these six QTLs were non-environment-specific and could be used for marker-assisted selection in rice quality improvement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To inquire into the relationship between cytochrome P450 and deltamethrin resistance. METHODS 24 new cDNA sequences encoding cytochrome P450 were amplified respectively from deltamethrin-susceptible and -resistant strains of Culex pipiens pallens with a pair of degenerate primers according to the conservative amino acid sequences of CYP4 in insects by RT-PCR and the Direct Cloning Method, and then were identified by cDNA chip and reverse Northern. RESULTS 112 positive clones were obtained, of which 24 were shown to be new sequences encoded for cytochrome P450. They have been lodged in GenBank and were appraised by the Nomenclature Committee of Cytochrome P450, belonging to the subfamily CYP4C, CYP4D, CYP4H and CYP4J in CYP4 family. The hybrid signal values of 6 P450 sequences (NYDS3, NYDS5, NYDR6, NYDR9, NYDR15 and NYDR17) were 3.1-9.7 times higher in the resistance probe than in the susceptible probe, and NYDR17 only reacted with the resistance probe. The result of reverse Northern in NYDR15 was similar to that of cDNA chip. CONCLUSION CYP4 is related to deltamethrin resistance and the specific expression caused by point mutation of cytochrome P450 gene may exist in deltamethrin-resistant Cx. pipiens pallens.

Abstract
Identification of genes that are specifically expressed in the adult testis or the fetal testis is important for the study of genes related to the development of the testis. In this study, a human testis cDNA microarray was established. PCR products of 9216 clones from a human testis cDNA library were dotted on a nylon membrane; mRNA from adult and fetal testes were purified and probes were prepared by a reverse transcription reaction with testis mRNA as template. The microarray was hybridized with probes of adult and fetal testes, and 96.8 and 95.4% of clones were positive, respectively. In total, 731 clones were differentially expressed: 592 were highly expressed in adult testis and 139 were highly expressed in fetal testis. Among these genes, a new reticulon (Rtn)-like gene was detected and named Rtn-T. Rtn-T was highly expressed in adult human testis. The cDNA of Rtn-T contains 3491 bp and the putative protein had 968 amino acids. This protein is homologous to the six known members of the Rtn family (KIAA0886, Rtn xL, reticulon 4a, Nogo-A, Nogo-A short form, and brain my043) but was different at the 5' end. All homologues originate from one gene, and result from both different promotor regions and different splicing. Rtn-T lacks the first exon and contains a second exon that is lacking in the other homologues. Rtn-T is shorter than KIAA0886, Rtn xL, reticulon 4a and Nogo-A, but longer than the Nogo-A short form and brain my043. Sequence analysis showed that Rtn-T protein has two hydrophobic regions that may be membrane-spanning domains. Expression profiles showed that Rtn-T is specifically and strongly expressed in testis. The results of the present study indicate that the Rtn-T gene is differentially expressed in adult and fetal testes and encodes a membrane protein that may have a function in testis development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) selectively enhances myocardial relaxation. In experimental left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), this endothelium-dependent LV relaxant response is impaired despite a preserved response to exogenous NO. We investigated the potential role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in this defect. METHODS AND RESULTS Short-term treatment with the antioxidants vitamin C (10 micromol/L) or deferoxamine (500 micromol/L) restored LV relaxant responses to the NO agonists bradykinin (10 nmol/L) and substance P (100 nmol/L) in isolated ejecting hearts of aortic-banded guinea pigs. Substance P decreased the time to onset of LV relaxation (tdP/dt(min)) by -6.8+/-1.7 ms in the presence of vitamin C and by -8.9+/-2.2 ms in the presence of deferoxamine compared with -0.8+/-2.2 ms in the absence of antioxidants (P<0.05 either antioxidant versus control). A similar restoration of relaxant response to substance P was observed in the presence of the superoxide dismutase mimetic, Mn(III)tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrin pentachloride (10 micromol/L), but not with tetrahydrobiopterin or L-arginine. Protein expression of the NADPH oxidase subunits gp91-phox and p67-phox and myocardial NADPH oxidase activity were significantly increased (P<0.05) in the banded group compared with shams. CONCLUSIONS An increase in ROS, most likely derived at least in part from NADPH oxidase, is responsible for the impaired endothelial regulation of LV relaxation in LVH. These are the first data to potentially link increased NADPH oxidase-derived ROS with a defect in cardiac contractile function in a pathological setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A poorly characterized phagocyte-type NADPH oxidase, which is reportedly NADH- rather than NADPH-dependent, is a major source of endothelial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. We investigated the molecular nature of this oxidase and the characteristics of NADPH- versus NADH-dependent O(2)(-) production in endothelial cells of three different species. METHODS NADPH oxidase expression in human, bovine and porcine endothelial cells was studied by RT-PCR and immunoblotting. O(2)(-) production was assessed by lucigenin chemiluminescence and cytochrome c reduction assay. RESULTS The NADPH oxidase subunits p47-phox, p67-phox, p22-phox, gp91-phox, and rac1 were all expressed in endothelial cells. NADPH-dependent O(2)(-) production by endothelial cells was readily detectable using lucigenin 5 micromol/l, was minimally affected by increasing lucigenin dose up to 400 micromol/l, and was abolished by diphenyleneiodonium. In contrast, NADH-dependent O(2)(-) production was only detectable with lucigenin > or =50 micromol/l, increased substantially with higher lucigenin dose, and was unaffected by diphenyleneiodonium. Predominance of NADPH- over NADH-dependent O(2)(-) production was confirmed in cell homogenates and by cytochrome c reduction assay. CONCLUSION Endothelial cells express all components of a phagocyte-type NADPH oxidase. Like the neutrophil enzyme, the endothelial oxidase is preferentially NADPH- rather than NADH-dependent. NADH-dependent O(2)(-) production appears to be an artefact related to the use of lucigenin doses > or =50 micromol/l.

Abstract
Arabidopsis seedling photomorphogenesis involves two antagonistically acting components, COP1 and HY5. COP1 specifically targets HY5 for degradation via the 26S proteasome in the dark through their direct physical interaction. Little is known regarding how light signals perceived by photoreceptors are transduced to regulate COP1. Arabidopsis has two related cryptochromes (cry1 and cry2) mediating various blue/ultraviolet-A light responses. Here we show that both photoactivated cryptochromes repress COP1 activity through a direct protein-protein contact and that this direct regulation is primarily responsible for the cryptochrome-mediated blue light regulation of seedling photomorphogenic development and genome expression profile.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of dl-praeruptorin A (Pd-Ia) on ATP sensitive potassium channels (KATP channel) in human cortical neurons. METHODS Using standard whole cell recording method. Cell membranes were held at -40 mV, commanding potential was -30 to +100 mV and duration was 600 ms. RESULTS Pd-Ia activated KATP channels in human cortical neurons in a concentration-dependent manner. After consecutive perfusion with external solution containing Pd-Ia 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 micromol/L, currents increased from control (0.9 +/- 0.4) nA to (1.0 +/- 0.4) nA, (1.1 +/- 0.4) nA, (1.2 +/- 0.4) nA, and (1.3 +/- 0.4) nA (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01, n = 5) respectively. Then the current decreased to (0.90 +/- 0.37) nA (P < 0.01, n = 5) after washout with glibenclamide (10 micromol/L). The increscent part of the currents could nearly be inhibited by specific KATP channel inhibitor. CONCLUSION Pd-Ia could open KATP channel and it is a kind of potassium channel opener

Abstract
Twenty cases of patients with relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) were entered into this study for evaluating the clinical efficacy and pharmacokinetics of low-dose arsenic trioxide (As2O3). As2O3 was given at a daily dose of 0.08 mg/kg intravenously for 28 days. Pharmacokinetic study was carried out in eight patients. 16/20 (80%) patients achieved CR. The occurrence of some toxic events including gastrointestinal disturbance, facial edema and cardiac toxicity seemed reduced in the low-dose group than those in the standard-dose group. Differentiation changes were observed in peripheral blood, as well as in bone marrow (BM). Pharmacokinetic study showed that the plasma concentration increased soon after administration of As2O3 with the peak values of 1.535-3.424 micromol/l. After infusion, the plasma concentration was around 0.1-0.5 micromol/l. The arsenic concentration of the plasma of BM aspirates 24 h after administration in five patients was close to the level needed for differentiation-inducing effect. The estimated 2-year OS and RFS were 61.55+/-15.79% and 49.11+/-15.09% respectively, with no difference as compared with those in patients treated with conventional dose (P = 0.2865 and 0.7146, respectively). In conclusion, we demonstrated that low-dose As2O3 had the same effect as the conventional dosage and the mechanism of low-dose arsenic seemed to primarily induce differentiation of APL cells.

Abstract
Explants excised from the young shoots of Aralia elata (Miq.) Seem. were cultured on MS media. Calli were induced from the explants on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L 2, 4-D, 0.5 mg/L BA and 0.5 mg/L NAA. Then these calli were transferred onto the MS medium containing 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D + 0.5 mg/L BA + 0.5 mg/L NAA and 0.2% activated charcoal. Under these conditions the somatic embryoids were observed and regenerated plants were obtained from somatic embryogenesis. Then, a experimental system with stability and high regenerating efficiency has been set up for the propagation of the young plants, the cell breeding technology and the control of somatic embryogenesis of Aralia elata (Miq.).

Abstract
Coronary microvascular endothelial cells exert (patho)physiological effects on the function of cardiac myocytes, which may be studied experimentally using pure cell populations. As an essential pre-requisite to the investigation of cells from gene-modified mice, we studied the phenotypic properties of coronary microvascular endothelial cells isolated from normal mice, and biochemically characterized the superoxide production by these cells. Microvascular endothelial cells were isolated from devitalized mouse ventricular tissue after sequential digestion with collagenase, trypsin and DNase. Coronary microvascular endothelial cells were separated from cardiac myocytes and other cells by differential centrifugation, plating and culture. Mouse coronary microvascular endothelial cells showed an irregular "cobblestone" morphology at confluence, were >98% positive for CD31 by FACS analysis, and were also positive for VE-cadherin and endothelial-type nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) by confocal microscopy. The cells took up fluorescently labelled, acetylated low-density lipoprotein, but were negative for a alpha -smooth muscle actin, desmin and cytokeratin. Unlike human endothelial cells, mouse coronary microvascular endothelial cells only weakly expressed von Willebrand factor. Immunoblotting showed that the mouse cells expressed components of a phagocyte-type NADPH oxidase. They exhibited NADPH-dependent O(2)(-)-generating activity, which was increased by angiotensin II but completely inhibited by diphenyleneiodonium. Thus, mouse coronary microvascular endothelial cells express both eNOS and NADPH oxidase, interactions between which may play a role in endothelial cell pathophysiology.

Abstract
AIM To study the effect of astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) bge. on the lipid peroxidation and NO level of myocardium from rats with diabetic nephropathy. METHODS Male wistar rats were divided into five groups: (1) A normal control group, (2) Diabetes group, (3) Diabetic nephropathy group, (4) Diabetic nephropathy group complicated with acute renal function damage, (5) Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) bge. treatment group. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and content of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) was determined biochemically from myocardial homogenate among different groups. RESULTS The activity of GSH-Px, SOD decreased and the content of MDA, NO and NOS activity increased in each experimental group compared with control group, as was more obvious in diabetic nephropathy group with acute renal function damage, which astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) bge could improve. CONCLUSION Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) bge. could protect the myocardium in diabetic nephropathy by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and decreasing the level of NO.

Abstract
Two hundred and nineteen patients with primary tumor and cyst in the mediastinum were retrospectively analysed. All patients received surgical treatment and pathologic examination. Results showed that: (1) the commonest mediastinal tumors was the thymoma (42.0%) (2) The second teratoma (20.1%). The incidence of neurogenic tumors was 16.4%. The over-all incidence of these three tumors was 78.5%. A total excision of the tumor was performed in 198 patients; incomplete excision was performed in 18 patients; 3 patients underwent biopsy only. The anatomic locations, clinical manifestations, complication and mortality of surgical treatment of these tumors were analysed.
