Abstract
Anti-aging medicine does not intend to prolong life by all means regardless of the underlying situation. In contrast, anti-aging medicine seeks strategies in order to maintain a high quality of health for people in the second half of their lives, i.e. they should be able to live in their old age without chronic damage to their health. Accordingly, anti-aging strategies have to affect various aspects of life. In Vienna, the following therapeutic concept is currently offered to our patients,which consists of 4 elements: 'lifestyle modification', 'restriction of calories', 'phytotherapy' and our individualized hormone replacement therapy. As estimated by the World Health Organization, the percentage of people aged over 85 will increase dramatically from the year 2010 on. In the light of these data, 'anti-aging medicine' or'preventive medicine' can no longer be neglected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cytokines have been described to play a major role in the pathogenesis of idiopathic recurrent miscarriage (IRM). We investigated the association between IRM and a polymorphism of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene and IL-6 serum levels. METHODS In a prospective case-control study, we studied 161 women with IRM and 124 healthy controls. Peripheral venous puncture, DNA extraction and PCR were employed to genotype women for the presence of a polymorphism at position -174 in the promoter region of IL-6. Serum IL-6 levels were assessed by a commercially available ELISA. RESULTS Allele frequencies among women with IRM and controls were 63.4 and 58.1% respectively for allele G (wild type), and 36.6 and 41.9% respectively for allele C (mutant). No association between allele C and the occurrence of IRM was found (odds ratio 0.8; 95% confidence interval = 0.57-1.12; P = NS). IL-6 serum levels were not significantly different between genotypes and between the study and control groups. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report on an IL-6 polymorphism in IRM. Although known to alter IL-6 expression, the IL-6 polymorphism investigated was not associated with IRM and alterations in IL-6 serum levels in a Middle-European Caucasian population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is the principal enzyme in the conjugation pathway for hydroxylated estrogens. We hypothesize that blood 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) and estrone (E(1)) levels in postmenopausal women receiving an oral E(2) preparation are dependent on the enzyme activity of COMT. METHODS To determine the influence of this enzyme on E(2) serum levels three groups of 12 selected from 159 healthy normotensive postmenopausal women were selected according to their codon 158 COMT genotype (COMT(HH), COMT(HL), COMT(LL)) which is known to be associated with enzyme activity. All selected women received one 2 mg tablet estradiol valerate and blood samples were taken before treatment and after 1, 3 and 48 h. RESULTS After 3 h the serum levels of E(2) were significantly higher in women with the COMT(LL) genotype (median 69 pg/ml, range 58-91) and the COMT(HL) genotype (median 69 pg/ml, range 43-84) compared with women with the COMT(HH) genotype (median 45 pg/ml, range 15-68, P < 0.005). In a univariate analysis of variance, considering age, body weight, and COMT genotype, body weight (P = 0.034) and COMT genotype (P < 0.001) were independently related to the increase of serum E(2) levels, whereas age was not. CONCLUSIONS Our data demonstrate that serum E(2) levels significantly correlate with the COMT genotype. Differences in COMT genotype might be involved in causing variable effects of estrogens on diseases such as hormone-dependent cancers, coronary heart disease and on efficacy of hormone replacement therapy.

Leider besteht für diesen Artikel keine Zusammenfassung. Als Einstieg stellen wir den Textanfang zur Verfügung. Mehr als ein Jahrzehnt dauert bereits die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung zwischen deutschen und österreichischen Endokrinologen bzw. Biochemikern, ob eine individuelle Hormonersatztherapie (HRT) sinnvoll ist und wie sie konkret aussehen soll. Dieses Thema wird nicht nur durch rezente Untersuchungen [1] aktualisiert, die klar belegen, dass die behandelten Frauen zu einem hohen Prozentsatz mit ihrer HRT unzufrieden sind und sie – vor allem wegen hyperöstrogenämischen Symptomen – nach relativ kurzer Zeit wieder beenden, sondern auch durch die HERS [2] und die Studie der Nurses’ Health Initiative [3], die sich von ihrem Design durch eine völlig unreflektierte Hormonverordnung auszeichnen. Die dabei vor allem gleich am Beginn auftretenden kardiovaskulären Probleme deuten bereits auf eine genetische Risikodisposition hin, in die stereotyp hineinsubstituiert wurde.

Abstract
To investigate the possible influence of a polymorphism of the Nos3 gene on menarche and onset of menopause in humans. Cohort study.Academic research institution.Ninety-one consecutive Caucasian postmenopausal women. Peripheral venous puncture and a patient questionnaire were administered.A tandem repeat polymorphism in intron 4 of Nos3 was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction amplification. The common B allele was identified on 143 of 182 chromosomes (frequency 0.79). The polymorphic A allele was present on 39 chromosomes (frequency 0.21). The genotype frequencies were as follows: 58.2% (B/B), 40.7% (A/B), and 1.1% (A/A). Age at menarche, number of deliveries, number of miscarriages, and onset of menopause did not differ between genotypes. Smoking and increased body mass index were associated with an earlier onset of natural menopause.In contrast to mouse models, in humans Nos3 does not seem to modulate onset and cessation of menses.

Abstract
The extragenital effects of ovarian steroids are relevant to the metabolism of skin and hair, the changes in body composition and the alterations of the subcutaneous fat distribution throughout life. When ovarian steroids become deficient or are produced in excess, different problems may arise in these tissues and some of these problems, i.e., obesity and cellulite, display gender-specific components. Therefore, a new field in endocrine research known as aesthetic endocrinology is gaining more interest. Because sex steroids are small molecules they can be transported into the skin by topical application when properly formulated. This possibility is used in aesthetic endocrinology in order to achieve local effects but to avoid systemic reactions. After reviewing the current data it collectively seems legitimate to recommend estrogens, either orally or topically, in order to counteract the aging of the skin after menopause. Although a reconstitution of juvenile skin cannot be achieved through this method, a slowing in the skin aging process seems a reasonable expectation. In contrast, the successful treatment of hair loss in women is only confirmed for the application of the non-hormonal compound minoxidil. Apart from the difficult problem of hirsutism, acne and changes in body composition offer promising therapeutical options for endocrinological methods.

Abstract
Novel knowledge in the fields of molecular biology, genetics and reproductive medicine will revolutionize medicine in the near future. Among many new therapeutical aspects arise a number ethical questions that include preimplantation diagnostics, embryonic stem cell research and gene therapy. Believing in scientific progress is often criticized but today it is primarily ignorance as well as fundamentalism that block sensible discussions. In the future it shall be of importance to differentiate between "to be alive" and "to have a life", hence yielding a new definition of the term "life". Also important is to keep in mind the difference between individual moral claims and general ethics. Without doubt, the current developments in medicine will bring about interesting consequences but the inherent dangers are recognizable as well. However, only a positive attitude will result in beneficial developments. More flexibility on all sides will be needed in the concurrent discussion process.

Abstract
To explore whether having the mutant tumor necrosis factor (TNF)2 (G-308*A) and TNFA-A (G-238*A) alleles in the TNF-alpha gene promotor region is higher in women with endometriosis, we determined the respective genotype and allele frequencies in a retrospective case-control study. Polymerase chain reaction was performed to identify the G-308A and G-238A promotor polymorphisms in 92 women with surgically and histologically confirmed endometriosis. A series of 69 healthy women without a history of endometriosis served as clinical controls. The allele frequencies of the TNF2 polymorphism were 0.13 and 0.16 in women with endometriosis and in the control group, respectively, and the frequencies of the TNFA-A polymorphisms in women with endometriosis and in the control group were 0.04 and 0.05, respectively, with no significant difference between the study and control groups. The TNF2 polymorphism was present in the homozygous form (TNF(2/2)) in 4.3% of women with endometriosis and in 2.9% of controls (P=.7). No TNFA-A homozygotes (TNFA(A/A)) were detected. We studied TNF-alpha promotor gene variants among women with endometriosis and found that having the G-308A TNF-alpha and the G-238A TNF-alpha polymorphism was not associated with endometriosis in a white population.

Abstract
Steroid hormone receptor co-factors are abundantly expressed in the uterus in order to modify steroid hormone receptor action, either leading to activation or repression of transcription in the endometrium. However, the role of co-factors in remodelling of the human endometrium has not been established. We therefore endeavoured to evaluate the presence of the co-activator SRC (steroid receptor co-activator)-1 and the co-repressors N-CoR (nuclear receptor co-repressor) and steroid co-repressor SMRT (silencing mediator of retinod and thyroid) receptors in the human endometrium during the different phases of the menstrual cycle. By using a real-time RT-PCR assay, we showed that SRC-1, N-CoR and SMRT mRNA are expressed in human endometrium during all phases of the menstrual cycle, as well as in inactive endometrium. Moreover, endometrial expression of SRC-1 and N-CoR mRNA increased during menstruation when compared with the other phases of the menstrual cycle (P < 0.001). Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that SRC-1 and N-CoR stain positive in the glandular epithelium and stroma in menstrual phase endometrium. The staining was weak in proliferative and secretory endometrium and absent in inactive endometrium. Our results suggest that differential expression of endometrial steroid receptor co-factors probably play a role in the regulation of human endometrium remodelling.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of low-dose oral hormonal contraception on the immune system during certain phases of the hormonal cycle. DESIGN Prospective, nonrandomized, controlled study. SETTING Academic research setting. PATIENT(S) Women with regular menstrual cycle using hormonal oral contraception (OC; Cileste, 250 microg of norgestimat and 35 microg of ethinylestradiol, or Marvelon, 150 microg of desogestrel and 30 microg of ethinylestradiol) and women not using hormonal or other forms of contraception. INTERVENTION(S) Peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets were determined by flow cytometry on the first day of menstruation (day 1), in the follicular phase (day 8), midcycle (day 15), and in the luteal phase (day 22). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Levels of lymphocyte subpopulations. RESULT(S) Women using OC had significantly higher levels of CD3+ CD8+ cells throughout their pill cycle compared to controls. Furthermore, women taking Cileste had lower levels of natural killer (NK) cells during their cycle and also women taking Marvelon but only from days 8-15. Within the pill cycle of Cileste we observed an increase in CD20+ and CD20+ CD5+ cells from days 1-8. CONCLUSION(S) Cytotoxic lymphocytes, which are responsible for first-line immune defense, and B cells, which are involved in autoimmune disorders, are affected by OC.

Abstract
Estradiol is a pleiotropic hormone, involved in the etiology of a wide variety of diseases. Over the last decade individual genetic variability of the estradiol metabolism has been described as a significant contributor to disease susceptibility with variations depending on ethnic background. Among others, genetic variations of genes encoding cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes play an important role in this regard. Mutant alleles of the CYP 1A1 gene are major modulators of lung cancer risk among smokers, mediate gender differences in lung cancer susceptibility, and have been associated with an elevated risk for developing breast, prostate, colorectal, and oral squamous cell cancer. Variants of the CYP 1B1 gene modulate the risk for developing prostate, ovarian, lung, and breast cancer. Also, mutations in the CYP 1B1 gene are the major genetic determinant of congenital glaucoma. Mutant CYP 17 alleles are associated with serum and plasma levels of steroid hormones, use of hormone replacement therapy, and the development of endometrial, prostate, and breast cancer. Available data indicate that the protective effect against breast cancer of a later age at menarche is limited to wild-type CYP 17 allele carriers. Among women with the polycystic ovary syndrome, carriage of mutant CYP 17 alleles is sufficient to aggravate the clinical presentation of the disease. Molecular variants of the CYP 19 gene are associated with an increased risk for developing breast cancer, advanced breast cancer stages, and tumor aromatase production. Carriage of a mutant catechol-O-methyltransferase allele is associated with breast cancer, neurologic disorders such as Parkinson's disease, and modulates behavior among patients with schizophrenia, alcoholics and the general population. In summary, the available evidence points to genes that encode estrogen-metabolizing enzymes as strong hereditary determinants of the susceptibility to benign as well as malignant conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between the C677T polymorphism of the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR), serum homocysteine levels, and idiopathic recurrent miscarriage in a Middle-European white population. METHODS In a case control study, we investigated 133 women with a history of three or more consecutive pregnancy losses before 20 weeks' gestation and 74 healthy controls with at least two live births and no history of pregnancy loss. A DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis were used to genotype women for the presence of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism. Serum homocysteine levels were assessed by a fluorescence polarization immunoassay. RESULTS The MTHFR allele frequencies in women with idiopathic recurrent miscarriage and controls were 34.6% and 21.6%, respectively, for the T allele (mutant) and 65.4% and 78.4%, respectively, for the C allele (wild type) (P =.007, odds ratio 1.9, 95% confidence interval 1.2, 3.1). The MTHFR genotype frequencies in women with idiopathic recurrent miscarriage and controls were: 17.3% (T/T), 34.6% (C/T), 48.1% (C/C) and 5.4% (T/T), 32.4% (C/T), 62.2% (C/C), respectively (P =.03, odds ratio 3.7, 95% confidence interval 1.2, 11.8 [T/T versus C/T and C/C]). Serum concentrations of homocysteine were significantly higher in carriers of a MTHFR mutant allele compared with women with no mutant allele (mean 7.4 +/- 2.4 micromol/L [T/T + C/T] versus 6.5 +/- 2.6 micromol/L [C/C], P =.05). CONCLUSION Carriage of the mutant allele of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism is associated with elevated serum levels of homocysteine and idiopathic recurrent miscarriage.

Abstract
Combined laparoscopic retrieval of immature oocytes and ovarian electrocautery represents a new management in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), one of the most prevalent endocrinopathies associated with anovulatory infertility. A 31-year-old para II presented with anovulatory, clomiphene-resistant PCOS, and a 6 year history of infertility. Conventional IVF treatment was abandoned in 1999 when she developed severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) following gonadotrophin stimulation. Sixteen oocytes were aspirated from both ovaries and collected in culture tubes containing a maturation medium. A total of three 2-cell embryos were transferred 48 h after ICSI. Two weeks after embryo transfer the urinary pregnancy test was positive and after another 2 weeks an ongoing singleton pregnancy with a fetal heartbeat was confirmed at transvaginal ultrasound examination. The combination of laparoscopy, in-vitro maturation and ICSI may open up new therapeutic strategies, even in patients without PCOS and regular menstrual cycles, undergoing laparoscopy for other causes of infertility such as tubal factors and endometriosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between the 306-base pair insertion polymorphism in intron G of the progesterone receptor (PROGINS) and endometriosis. DESIGN Case-control study. SETTING Tertiary care center. PATIENT(S) Ninety-five white women with surgically diagnosed and histologically confirmed endometriosis and 107 white women without endometriosis (controls). INTERVENTION(S) Determination of PROGINS was performed by polymerase chain reaction and gel electrophoresis. MAIN OUTCOIME MEASURE(S): Frequency and distribution of the PROGINS allele. RESULT(S) Frequencies of the mutant allele T2 was 0.17 among women with endometriosis and 0.08 among controls (odds ratio, 2.41 [CI, 1.31-4.53]). Homozygosity for allele T2 was present in 3.2% of women with endometriosis and 0.9% of controls. CONCLUSION(S) PROGINS appears to be associated with endometriosis in white persons.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-1beta, angiotensinogen (Agt), and endothelium-derived nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) are thought to be involved in idiopathic recurrent miscarriage (IRM). We investigated the correlation between IRM and common polymorphisms in Agt, Nos3 and IL-1beta genes: one polymorphism in the promoter region of the IL-1beta gene, one in exon 2 of the Agt gene, and one in exon 7 of the Nos3 gene. A total of 130 women with a history of IRM and 67 healthy control women were included in the study. Genotyping for the C/T transition at position -511 in the promoter region of IL1B, for the single base M235T polymorphism of Agt, and for the missense Glu298Asp variant of Nos3 was performed using PCR, an allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization assay, and pyrosequencing, respectively. Allele and genotype frequencies of all polymorphisms were similar among women with IRM and controls. Between women with primary and secondary recurrent miscarriages, no statistically significant differences between allele and genotype frequencies were observed. Despite promising experimental data, our data fall short of showing any significant association between a variant of the promoter region of IL1B, the M235T polymorphism of Agt, and the Glu298Asp missense variant of Nos3 and the occurrence of IRM.

Abstract
Measuring nitric-oxide synthase (NOS) activity by monitoring the conversion of L-arginine to L-citrulline is currently the standard assay for NOS activity. We describe a simple method of quantifying low values of NOS activity by removing the background mathematically. When performing NOS activity studies in samples with low protein amount (< 25 microg/microl), we encountered the problem of sample values that can hardly be differentiated from blank values probably originating from radioactive-labeled arginine in the final eluate. Our method determines mathematically these background values and may be an improvement of the citrulline assay.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the frequency of a polymorphism in intron 7 of the tryptophan hydroxylase gene among women with idiopathic recurrent miscarriage and healthy controls. METHODS In a case control study, we studied 125 women with a history of three or more consecutive pregnancy losses before 20 weeks' gestation and 137 healthy controls with at least two live births and no history of pregnancy loss. Peripheral venous puncture, DNA extraction, and polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis were used to genotype women for the presence of the A218C polymorphism in intron 7 of the tryptophan hydroxylase gene. RESULTS Allele frequencies among women with idiopathic recurrent miscarriage and controls were 32.4% and 38.7%, respectively, for allele A (wild type) and 67.6% and 61.3%, respectively, for allele C (mutant). No association between the presence of allele C and idiopathic recurrent miscarriage was found (P = .3; odds ratio 1.31; 95% confidence interval 0.93, 1.87). Genotype frequencies also were not significantly different between the study group (C/C: 44.8%; A/C: 45.6%; A/A: 9.6%) and the control group (C/C: 37.2%; A/C: 48.2%; A/A: 14.6%; P = .2). Between women with primary and women with secondary idiopathic recurrent miscarriage, no statistically significant differences with respect to allele frequencies were observed (63% vs 62% for allele C and 31% vs 38% for allele A; P = .3). CONCLUSION The A218C polymorphism in intron 7 of the tryptophan hydroxylase gene is not associated with idiopathic recurrent miscarriage.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to show the influence of three different hormone replacement therapy regimes (HRT) by comparing the changes in skin thickness. METHOD Skin thickness was measured using a high-frequency ultrasound system on the inner side of the left upper arm of perimenopausal women with a low oestradiol level (< 45 pg/ml). The patients were allocated to different groups: Group1 (n = 6) received oestradiol merely transdermally; Group 2 (n = 7) was given transdermal oestradiol as well as progesterone vaginally; Group 3 (n = 8) took oral oestradiol and vaginal progesterone; Group 4 (n = 3) served as the control group without therapy. RESULTS The median value of skin thickness in all HRT-groups increased highly significantly (0.15 mm) after six months (0.91 mm before therapy versus 1.06 mm after six months of HRT), but there was no significant change in the control group. CONCLUSIONS The study shows that HRT leads to an increase of skin thickness which can be demonstrated by a high-frequency ultrasound.

Abstract
Carbon monoxide, a gaseous activator of soluble guanylyl cyclase formed by a subtype of the enzyme heme oxygenase designated heme oxygenase-2 in vascular endothelium, has been found to dilate blood vessels independently from nitric oxide. Because of the parallels between nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, we speculated that estrogen might affect carbon monoxide production in vascular endothelium. Endothelial cells of human origin (umbilical vein and uterine artery) were incubated for 4 or 24 h with 10(-12)-10(-6) M 17beta-estradiol. 17beta-Estradiol, at a concentration such as that attained during the ovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle (10(-10) M), administrated for 4 h led to a 2-fold increase in intracellular carbon monoxide production and heme oxygenase-2 protein levels (P < 0.05). A reporter assay, measuring the formation of cGMP as the direct product of carbon monoxide-induced activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase in endothelial cells, also revealed a 56% increase in cellular cGMP after treatment with 10(-10) M E2 17beta-estradiol (P < 0.05). By contrast, higher 17beta-estradiol concentrations had no significant respective effects due to nitric oxide synthase inhibition of carbon monoxide release. This 17beta-estradiol effect appeared to be ER dependent, as preincubation with tamoxifen (10(-6) M) blocked the stimulatory effect of 17beta-estradiol in each instance. Our preliminary data indicate a potential role for carbon monoxide as a biological messenger molecule in estrogen-mediated regulation of vascular tone.

OBJECTIVE Proinflammatory cytokines have been described to be involved in the pathogenesis of idiopathic recurrent miscarriage (IRM). We investigated the association between IRM and a polymorphism in exon 5 of the interleukin-1beta gene (IL1B) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) serum levels. DESIGN Case control study. SETTING Academic research institution. SUBJECTS One hundred thirty-one women with a history of three or more consecutive pregnancy losses before 20 weeks' gestation and 68 healthy controls with at least two live births and no history of pregnancy loss. INTERVENTIONS Peripheral venous puncture. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES An IL1B exon 5 (position +3953) gene polymorphism was analyzed by PCR amplification followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. IL-1beta serum levels were analyzed by a commercially available ELISA. RESULTS Allele frequencies in women with IRM and controls were 77.9% and 80.8%, respectively, for the E1 allele (wild type), and 22.1% and 19.2%, respectively, for the E2 allele (mutant). No association between the E2 allele and the occurrence of IRM was found (P=.57, odds ratio =.83). Genotype frequencies and IL-1beta serum levels were not significantly different between the study group and the control group. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report on an IL1B polymorphism in IRM. Although known to alter IL-1beta expression, the investigated IL1B polymorphism is not associated with IRM and increased serum levels in a large Caucasian population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lack of endothelium-derived nitric oxide is associated with vasospasm and vascular infarction. We investigated the relationship between idiopathic recurrent miscarriage and a polymorphism of the gene encoding endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS3). METHOD In a prospective case-control study, 105 women with idiopathic recurrent miscarriage and 91 healthy controls were investigated. We used the polymerase chain reaction to identify the different alleles of a 27 base pair tandem repeat polymorphism in intron 4 of the NOS3 gene. RESULTS The wild type B allele was identified on 329 out of 392 chromosomes (frequency 0.84). The polymorphic A allele was present on 63 chromosomes (frequency 0.16). The genotype frequencies were as follows: 68% (B/B), 31% (A/B) and.5% (A/A). The distribution of genotype frequencies was significantly different between the study and control groups for allele A/B heterozygotes (NOS3(A/B)) (36.7 versus 23.8%, P = 0.03, OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.1--3.8). Only one individual was homozygous for the A allele (NOS3(A/A)). She was in the study group. Between women with primary and secondary recurrent miscarriages, no statistically significant difference between the distribution of NOS3(A/B) genotypes (28 versus 34%) was observed. CONCLUSIONS These data support a role for the NOS3 gene as a genetic determinant of the risk of idiopathic recurrent miscarriage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We studied the effect of hormonal treatment on skin ageing in menopausal women. METHODS Twenty-four patients (45-68 years; mean age, 54.9 years) without hormone treatment for at least 6 months were included. Patients were assigned to three therapy groups: 1, oestrogen only (Estraderm TTS 50) (n=6); 2, transdermal oestrogen and progesterone (Estraderm TTS 50 and 0.4 mg progesterone vaginal suppository) (n=7); and 3, oral oestrogen and progesterone (2 mg Progynova and 0.4 mg progesterone vaginal suppository) (n=8). One group without therapy was included as a control group (n=3). Treatment was continued for 6 months. Three patients, one from group 2 and two from group 3, discontinued therapy before the study endpoint. The following skin parameters were measured at monthly intervals during treatment: skin surface lipids, epidermal skin hydration, skin elasticity and skin thickness. Concomitant clinical evaluation included a subjective clinical evaluation form, a patient questionnaire and laboratory tests for oestradiol, progesterone and follicle stimulating hormone. RESULTS Mean levels of epidermal skin moisture, elasticity and skin thickness were improved at the end of treatment based on both subjective and objective evaluation in patients with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Skin surface lipids were increased during combined HRT, which may reflect stimulatory effects of the progestagen component on sebaceous gland activity, while oestrogen alone has a sebum-suppressive action. In the HRT groups, the questionnaire for climacteric complaints demonstrated significant improvements, while laboratory tests showed increases in oestradiol and progesterone and decreases in FSH. CONCLUSIONS HRT with the mentioned regimes significantly improved parameters of skin ageing.
