Abstract
Parastichy, the spiral arrangement of plant organs, is an example of the long-range apparent order seen in biological systems. These ordered arrangements provide scientists with both an aesthetic challenge and a mathematical inspiration. Synthetic efforts to replicate the regularity of parastichy may allow for molecular-scale control over particle arrangement processes. Here we report the packing of a supramolecular truncated cuboctahedron (TCO) into double-helical (DH) nanowires on a graphite surface with a non-natural parastichy pattern ascribed to the symmetry of the TCOs and interactions between TCOs. Such a study is expected to advance our understanding of the design inputs needed to create complex, but precisely controlled, hierarchical materials. It is also one of the few reported helical packing structures based on Platonic or Archimedean solids since the discovery of the Boerdijk-Coxeter helix. As such, it may provide experimental support for studies of packing theory at the molecular level.

Abstract
Calix[4]pyrrole 1 can form host-guest complexes with certain thallium salts, for example, TlF, not only in the gas phase but also in solution and in the solid state. The complexation of TlF by calix[4]pyrrole 1 was found to promote self-assembly and the formation of well-defined and highly ordered fibrous supramolecular morphologies, as revealed by polarizing microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The findings reported here serve to broaden the scope of cationic substrates that may be complexed as ion pairs by calix[4]pyrrole receptors while setting the stage for the development of new hosts for thallium(I) salts.

Abstract
Tumor hypoxia is correlated with increased resistance to chemotherapy and poor overall prognoses across a number of cancer types. We present here a cancer cell-selective and hypoxia-responsive probe (fol-BODIPY) designed on the basis of density functional theory (DFT)-optimized quantum chemical calculations. The fol-BODIPY probe was found to provide a rapid fluorescence "off-on" response to hypoxia relative to controls, which lack the folate or nitro-benzyl moieties. In vitro confocal microscopy and flow cytometry analyses, as well as in vivo near-infrared optical imaging of CT26 solid tumor-bearing mice, provided support for the contention that fol-BODIPY is more readily accepted by folate receptor-positive CT26 cancer cells and provides a superior fluorescence "off-on" signal under hypoxic conditions than the controls. Based on the findings of this study, we propose that fol-BODIPY may serve as a tumor-targeting, hypoxia-activatable probe that allows for direct cancer monitoring both in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract
A doubly N-confused phlorin and phlorinone analogue were synthesized from a β,β'-linked dipyrromethane precursor and characterized by means of NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, X-ray crystallography, and electrochemistry. Solvents have a considerable impact on the optical absorption of the doubly N-confused phlorin so that it can differentiate simple alcohols such as methanol and ethanol.

Abstract
The synthesis of the pyridazine-bridged expanded rosarin 1 and a reduced precursor, semi-rosarinogen 2, is reported. A single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 and theoretical calculations show that both 1 and 2 have distorted structures. Expanded rosarin 1 and its precursor 2 can differentiate various thiols in organic solvents by means of species-specific colour changes and reaction times.

Abstract
Since as early as 1867, molecular sensors have been recognized as being intelligent "devices" capable of addressing a variety of issues related to our environment and health (e.g., the detection of toxic pollutants or disease-related biomarkers). In this review, we focus on fluorescence-based sensors that incorporate supramolecular chemistry to achieve a desired sensing outcome. The goal is to provide an illustrative overview, rather than a comprehensive listing of all that has been done in the field. We will thus summarize early work devoted to the development of supramolecular fluorescent sensors and provide an update on recent advances in the area (mostly from 2018 onward). A particular emphasis will be placed on design strategies that may be exploited for analyte sensing and corresponding molecular platforms. Supramolecular approaches considered include, inter alia, binding-based sensing (BBS) and indicator displacement assays (IDAs). Because it has traditionally received less treatment, many of the illustrative examples chosen will involve anion sensing. Finally, this review will also include our perspectives on the future directions of the field.

Abstract
Deferasirox, ExJade, is an FDA-approved iron chelator used for the treatment of iron overload. In this work, we report several fluorescent deferasirox derivatives that display unique photophysical properties, i.e., aggregation-induced emission (AIE), excited state intramolecular proton transfer, charge transfer, and through-bond and through-space conjugation characteristics in aqueous media. Functionalization of the phenol units on the deferasirox scaffold afforded the fluorescent responsive pro-chelator ExPhos, which enabled the detection of the disease-based biomarker alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The diagnostic potential of these deferasirox derivatives was supported by bacterial biofilm studies.

Abstract
Described here is a three-component self-assembly system that displays emergent behavior that differs from that of its constituents. The system comprises an all-hydrocarbon octaaryl macrocycle cyclo[8](1,3-(4,6-dimethyl)benzene (D4d-CDMB-8), corannulene (Cora), and I2. No appreciable interaction is seen between any pair of these three-components, either in cyclohexane or under various crystallization conditions. On the other hand, when all three-components are mixed in cyclohexane and allowed to undergo crystallization, a supramolecular iodine-containing capsule, ((D4d-CDMB-8)3⊃(Cora)2)⊃I2, is obtained. This all-hydrocarbon capsule consists of three D4d-CDMB-8 and two Cora subunits and contains a centrally bound I2 molecule as inferred from single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction studies as well as solid-state 13C NMR and Raman spectroscopy. These analyses were complemented by solution-phase 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic studies. No evidence of I2 escape from the capsule is seen, even at high temperatures (e.g., up to 418 K). The bound I2 is likewise protected from reaction with alkali or standard reductants in aqueous solution (e.g., saturated NaOH(aq) or aqueous Na2S2O3). It was also found that a mixed powder containing D4d-CDMB-8 and Cora in a 3:2 molar ratio could capture saturated I2 vapor or iodine from aqueous sources (e.g., 1.0 mM I2 in NaCl (35 wt %) or I2 + NaI(aq) (1.0 mM each)). The present system displays structural and functional features that go beyond what would be expected on the basis of a simple sum-of-the-components analysis. As such, it illustrates a new approach to creating self-assembled ensembles with emergent features.

Abstract
Despite being a clinically approved intervention for cancer, photodynamic therapy (PDT) still suffers from limitations. Prime among these is a therapeutic response that is mostly oxygen dependent. This limits the utility of PDT in treating hypoxic tumors since lower levels of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated in regions of low oxygen tension. Glutathione-pi (GST-pi) is a key enzyme that militates against ROS-mediated apoptosis. We report herein a new construct, EA-BPS, that contains both a brominated BODIPY photosensitizer (BPS) and an ethacrynic acid (EA) GST-pi inhibitor. Photoirradiation of EA-BPS induces a synergistic antitumor effect that results from the combination of ROS production and GST-pi inhibition. Relative to BPS alone, an enhanced cell-killing effect is seen under hypoxic conditions both in vitro and in vivo. We conclude that by making better use of the available oxygen in tumor environments, improved therapeutic PDT outcomes should be achievable even under hypoxic conditions.

Abstract
Immunogenic cell death (ICD) is a way of reengaging the tumor-specific immune system. ICD can be induced by treatment with chemotherapeutics. However, only a limited number of drugs and other treatment modalities have been shown to elicit the biomarker responses characteristic of ICD and to provide an anticancer benefit in vivo. Here, we report a rationally designed redox-active Au(I) bis-N-heterocyclic carbene that induces ICD both in vitro and in vivo. This work benefits from a synthetic pathway that allows for the facile preparation of asymmetric redox-active Au(I) bis-N-heterocyclic carbenes.

Abstract
The peroxidase activity of hemin-peptide complexes remains a potential factor in oxidative damage relevant to neurodegeneration. Here, we present the effect of temperature, ionic strength, and pH relevant to pathophysiological conditions on the dynamic equilibrium between high-spin and low-spin hemin-Aβ40 constructs. This influence on peroxidase activity was also demonstrated using 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and dopamine (DA) oxidation rate analyses with increasing ratios of Aβ16 and Aβ40 (up to 100 equivalents). Interaction and reactivity studies of aggregated Aβ40-hemin revealed enhanced peroxidase activity versus hemin alone. Comparison of the results obtained using Aβ16 and Aβ40 amyloid beta peptides revealed marked differences and provide insight into the potential effects of hemin-Aβ on neurological disease progression.

Abstract
Directly linked porphyrin dimers have attracted considerable attention because of their intriguing electronic features. Most emphasis has been placed on either dimers with large dihedral angles between the constituent planar monomeric subunits or those with overall planarity, referred to as "Planar-Twisted-Planar" and "Planar-Planar-Planar", respectively. Herein, we report a "Twisted-Planar-Twisted" framework, the hexaphyrin dimer D that exists in a trans configuration. Treatment of D with MeOH affords two isomeric dimers, MD1 and MD2, both of which incorporate a methoxy moiety and exist in cis orientations with respect to the tethering linkage. The methanol-promoted conversion is accompanied by a readily discernible color change from green to brown and is not induced to an appreciable level by other alcohols. Dimer D thus acts as a rudimentary, albeit highly selective, reaction-based methanol indicator. This work provides a promising approach for constructing reaction-based chemosensors using porphyrinoid dimers of nonplanar subunits with biased reactivity.

Abstract
There is a recognized need in the area of explosives detection for fluorescence-based sensing systems that are capable of not only producing a turn-on response but also generating a distinctive spectral signature for a given analyte. Here, we report several supramolecular ensembles displaying efficient fluorophore displacement that give rise to an increase in fluorescence intensity upon exposure to various nitroaromatic compounds. The synthetic supramolecular constructs in question consist of a tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based pyrrolic macrocycle, benzo-TTF-calix[4]pyrrole (Bz-TTF-C4P), and fluorescent dyes, monomeric or dimeric naphthalenediimide (NDI) and perylenediimide (PDI) derivatives, as well as chloride or hexafluorophosphate (PF6-) salts of rhodamine 6G (Rh-6G). In chloroform solution, these assemblies exist in the form of discrete supramolecular complexes or oligomeric aggregates depending on the specific dye combinations in question. Each ensemble was tested as a potential explosive-responsive fluorescence indicator displacement assay (FIDA) by challenging it with a series of di- and trinitroaromatic compounds and examining the change in fluorescence spectral characteristics. Upon addition of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), either a "turn-on" or a "turn-off" fluorescent response was observed depending on the nature of the constituent fluorophore and, where applicable, the counteranion. The FIDAs based on the PDI derivatives were found to display not only a ratiometric fluorescence enhancement but also analyte-dependent spectral changes when treated with NACs. The NAC-induced fluorescence spectral response of each ensemble was rationalized on the basis of various solution-phase spectroscopic studies, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Abstract
The NIR absorptivity of the metallotexaphyrin derivatives MMn, MGd, and MLu for photoacoustic (PA)-based imaging is explored in this study. All three complexes demonstrated excellent photostabilities; however, MMn provided the greatest PA signal intensities in both doubly distilled water and RAW 264.7 cells. In vivo experiments using a prostate tumor mouse model were performed. MMn displayed no adverse toxicity to major organs as inferred from hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and cell blood count testing. MMn also allowed for PA-based imaging of tumors with excellent in vivo stability to provide 3D tumor diagnostic information. Based on the present findings and previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, we believe MMn may have a role to play either as a stand-alone PA contrast agent or as a single molecule dual modal (PA and MR) imaging agent for tumor diagnosis.
