Toward a density functional description of liquid pH2

A finite-temperature density functional approach to describe the properties of parahydrogen in the liquid-vapor coexistence region is presented. The first proposed functional is zero-range, where the density-gradient term is adjusted so as to reproduce the surface tension of the liquid-vapor interface at low temperature. The second functional is finite-range and, while it is fitted to reproduce bulk pH(2) properties only, it is shown to yield surface properties in good agreement with experiments. These functionals are used to study the surface thickness of the liquid-vapor interface, the wetting transition of parahydrogen on a planar Rb model surface, and homogeneous cavitation in bulk liquid pH(2).

Sublingual therapeutic immunization with a polyvalent bacterial preparation in patients with recurrent respiratory infections: immunomodulatory effect on antigen-specific memory CD4+ T cells and impact on clinical outcome

Recurrent respiratory tract infections (RRTIs) are common clinical conditions in individuals with alterations of the immune function. A prospective open pilot study in a cohort of patients with RRTIs has been performed to assess whether sublingual immunization with a polyvalent bacterial vaccine could exert an immunomodulatory effect on the antigen-specific immunological responses and have an impact on the clinical outcome. Seventeen patients with RRTIs were recruited. An oral polyvalent bacterial preparation (Bactek®) was administered to all patients daily for 6 months. Immunological assessment was performed at baseline and at the end of immunization. Immunological measurements included: T cell-specific proliferations of CD3+CD4+ and CD3+CD8+ to Bactek® antigens, total immunoglobulin levels, antibodies to pneumococcal polysaccharide and tetanus toxoid and B, T and natural killer (NK) cell subsets. There was a significant increase in the proliferative capacity of CD3+CD4+ T cells specific to Bactek® antigens at month 6 in comparison to baseline (P < 0·0001). A significant increase in total CD3+ T cells was also observed (P < 0·05). No significant differences were observed between baseline and month 6 in levels of total immunoglobulins, specific antibodies and B, T or NK cell subsets. A significant reduction in the patient's rate of RRTIs was observed compared with 1 year prior to initiation of therapy (P < 0·0001). The results demonstrate that long-term administration of a sublingual polyvalent bacterial preparation in patients with RRTIs exerts an immune stimulating effect on CD4+ T helper cell responses to bacterial antigens which could be associated with clinical benefit.

Whole-chromosome aneuploidy analysis in human oocytes: focus on comparative genomic hybridization

The study of aneuploidy in human oocytes, discarded from IVF cycles, has provided a better understanding of the incidence of aneuploidy of female origin and the responsible mechanisms. Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is an established technique that allows for the detection of aneuploidy in all chromosomes avoiding artifactual chromosome losses. In this review, results obtained using CGH in single cells (1PB and/or MII oocytes) are included. The results of oocyte aneuploidy rates obtained by CGH from discarded oocytes of IVF patients and of oocyte donors are summarized. Moreover, the mechanisms involved in the aneuploid events, e.g. whether alterations occurred due to first meiotic errors or germ-line mitotic errors are also discussed. Finally, the incidence of aneuploid oocyte production due to first meiotic errors and germ-line mitotic errors observed in oocytes coming from IVF patients and IVF oocyte donors was assessed.

Ca impurity in small mixed (4)He-(3)He clusters

The structure of small mixed helium clusters doped with one calcium atom has been determined within the diffusion Monte Carlo framework. The results show that the calcium atom sits at the (4)He-(3)He interface. This is in agreement with previous studies, both experimental and theoretical, performed for large clusters. A comparison between the results obtained for the largest cluster we have considered for each isotope shows a clear tendency of the Ca atom to reside in a deep dimple at the surface of the cluster for (4)He clusters, and to become fully solvated for (3)He clusters. We have calculated the absorption spectrum of Ca around the 4s4p<--4s(2) transition and have found that it is blueshifted from that of the free-atom transition by an amount that depends on the size and composition of the cluster.

Nosocomial infection surveillance and control: current situation in Spanish hospitals

We studied healthcare-associated infection (HCAI) surveillance and control programmes in Spanish hospitals in 2006 and the human resources and materials used. A questionnaire on the structure, organisation and resources for HCAI surveillance and control was sent to all hospitals registered in the 2005 National Catalogue of Hospitals. A total of 237 hospitals (29.8%) responded, representing 55.9% of the beds included in the catalogue. Some 92% of hospitals had a surveillance and control programme, although 29.9% had had it for less than five years. Only 17.4% of hospitals had one infection control nurse per 250 beds, and only 36.2% had one infection control doctor per 500 beds. Surveillance is the main activity of those responsible for surveillance and control, and the most widely used systems are reviews of microbiology laboratory test results and studies of outbreaks, prevalence surveys, the incidence of certain procedures and of infection in critical care areas. Collaboration in multicentre studies is variable. EPINE, the prevalence survey of nosocomial infections in Spain, is performed annually in 80.5% of centres; ENVIN-UCI, a study of the incidence of infection in critically ill patients, is carried out in 24.8%, and the European study of the incidence of surgical infection, HELICS, in 22.7%. Priority should be given to improving specialised human resources and establishing common surveillance and control systems.

Gene therapy and intracytoplasmatic sperm injection (ICSI) - a review

Human gene therapy (HGT), the treatment or prevention of disease by gene transfer is, regarded by many, as a potential revolution in medicine, because gene therapies target the causes of disease, whereas most current drugs treat the symptoms. Micro-assisted fertilization in the form of intracytoplasmatic sperm injection (ICSI) has truly revolutionized the treatment options for couples with impaired semen quality, and those with both obstructive and non-obstructive azoospermia. ICSI involves the injection of a single sperm directly into the cytoplasm of a mature egg (oocyte) using a glass needle (pipette). Fertilization with this technique occurs in 50%-80% of injected oocytes, but may damage a small percentage of them. With gene therapy, there are new and varied strategies for gene transfer and genome sequence manipulation with improved methodologies that use the technique of microinjection such as the intracytoplasmatic sperm injection-mediated transgenesis (ICSI-Tr), active transgenesis or the pronuclear microinjection technique. This review will look at these methods as well as their potential applications and limitations.
