Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of recombinant adenovirus expressing αA-crystallin (Ad-αAc-Gfp) in reducing pericyte loss within retinal vasculature in early diabetes. METHODS Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection into C57BL/6 mice. Ad-αAc-Gfp was delivered by intravitreous injection to the right eyes of mice 2 weeks before induction of diabetes. Vascular leakage was determined by fluorescent angiography, Evans Blue leakage assay and leucocyte adhesion test. Production of αA-crystallin was analysed by immunoblotting and double immunostaining and pericyte loss was analysed by pericyte count. RESULTS Vessel leakage and pericyte loss were observed in the streptozotocin-induced diabetic retina. Decreased abundance of αA-crystallin in retinas 2 and 6 months after the induction of diabetes was confirmed by two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis, immunoblotting and RT-PCR. Double immunofluorescence staining for αA-crystallin and NG2 chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan revealed that αA-crystallin was predominantly produced in the retinal pericyte and that the number of αA-crystallin-producing pericytes decreased in the diabetic retina. Retinal infection with Ad-αAc-Gfp led to decreased pericyte loss and vascular leakage compared with control. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Intravitreal delivery of Ad-αAc-Gfp protects against vascular leakage in the streptozotocin-induced model of diabetes. This effect is associated with the inhibition of diabetic retinal pericyte loss in early diabetes, suggesting that αA-crystallin has a role in preventing the pathogenesis of early diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We investigated the importance, risk factors, and clinical course of the radiolucent "halo" phenomenon around bone cement following vertebral augmentation for osteoporotic compression fracture. Preoperative osteonecrosis and a lump cement pattern were the most important risk factors for the peri-cement halo phenomenon, and it was associated with vertebral recollapse. INTRODUCTION We observed a newly developed radiolucent area around the bone cement following vertebral augmentation for osteoporotic compression fractures. Here, we describe the importance of the peri-cement halo phenomenon, as well as any associated risk factors and long-term sequelae. METHODS In total, 175 patients (202 treated vertebrae) were enrolled in this study. The treated vertebrae were subdivided into two groups: Group A (with halo, n = 32) and Group B (without halo, n = 170), and the groups were compared with respect to multiple preoperative (age, sex, BMD, preoperative osteonecrosis) and perioperative factors (operative approach: vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty; cement distribution pattern; cement leakage; cement volume), and postoperative results (VAS score, recollapse). Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between the incidence of the peri-cement halo and all of the parameters described above. RESULTS Rates of osteonecrosis were also significantly higher in Group A than in Group B (62.5% vs. 31.2%, p < 0.05), and kyphoplasty (KP) was performed more frequently in Group A (43.8% vs. 17.6%, p < 0.05). Lump cement (93.8% vs. 30.6%, p < 0.05) and recollapse (78.1% vs. 24.7%, p < 0.05) were also more common among individuals in Group A. Logistic regression analysis also showed that preoperative osteonecrosis (OR = 3.679; 95% CI = 1.677-8.073; p = 0.001), KP (OR = 3.630; 95% CI = 1.628-8.095; p = 0.002), lump pattern (OR = 13.870; 95% CI = 2.907-66.188; p = 0.001), and vertebral recollapse (OR = 5.356; 95% CI = 1.897-15.122; p = 0.002) were significantly associated with peri-cement halo. CONCLUSIONS The peri-cement halo was found to be associated with vertebral recollapse, this sign likely represents a poor prognostic factor after vertebral augmentation for osteoporotic compression fractures.

Abstract
The chemokine receptor [C-C chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5)] is expressed on diverse immune effecter cells and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study sought to determine whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the CCR5 gene and their haplotypes were associated with susceptibility to and severity of RA. Three hundred fifty-seven patients with RA and 383 healthy unrelated controls were recruited. Using a pyrosequencing assay, we examined four polymorphisms -1118 CTAT(ins) (/del) (rs10577983), 303 A>G (rs1799987), 927 C>T (rs1800024), and 4838 G>T (rs1800874) of the CCR5 gene, which were distributed over the promoter region as well as the 5' and 3' untranslated regions. No significant difference in the genotype, allele, and haplotype frequencies of the four selected SNPs was observed between RA patients and controls. CCR5 polymorphisms of -1118 CTAT(del) (P = 0.012; corrected P = 0.048) and 303 A>G (P = 0.012; corrected P = 0.048) showed a significant association with radiographic severity in a recessive model, and, as a result of multivariate logistic regression analysis, were found to be an independent predictor of radiographic severity. When we separated the erosion score from the total Sharp score, the statistical significance of CCR5 polymorphisms showed an increase; -1118 CTAT(ins) (/del) (P = 0.007; corrected P = 0.028) and 303 A>G (P = 0.007; corrected P = 0.028). Neither SNPs nor haplotypes of the CCR5 gene showed a significant association with joint space narrowing score. These results indicate that genetic polymorphisms of CCR5 are an independent risk factor for radiographic severity denoted by modified Sharp score, particularly joint erosion in RA.

Abstract
AIM Myokines and angiogenesis factors, studies on trainings according to the difference of exercise intensity are not sufficient, and it has not been elucidated. Particularly, studies on the effect of resistance exercise according to the intensity of resistance exercise on blood myokines and angiogenesis may be essential in the metabolic process of angiogenesis and the formation of muscle. METHODS The subjects of our studies were healthy male college students (N.=30) randomly assigned to the high intensity exercise group (N.=10), the moderate intensity exercise group (N.=10), and the control group (N.=10). The study was performed after obtaining a consent in advance, and the approval from the Institutional Review Board of Dong-A University Hospital. In the body composition test, height, weight, BMI (body mass index), %fat, and LBM (lean body mass) were measured by electric impedance. In blood analysis, myokines (interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-15) and angiogenesis factors (vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), angiopoietin (Ang)1, follistatin (FLRG)) were analyzed by ELISA methods. RESULTS The results show %body fat and LBM of the three groups were significantly different (P<0.05). IL-6 and IL-8 of the three groups were significantly different (P<0.05). Particularly, IL-8 of RE60 (60% of 1RM) was shown to be significantly higher than other groups (P<0.05). IL-15 also showed significant differences with time (P<0.05). In addition, VEGF and Ang 1 showed significant differences with time (P<0.05), nonetheless, FLRG did not showed statistical differences. CONCLUSION Many of muscle contraction through 8 weeks resistance exercise exerted positive effects on the concentration of blood myokines as well as angiogenesis. Particularly, in regard to blood myokines, moderate intensity exercise were more effective than high intensity exercise, which is considered to be due to that continuous muscle contraction of moderate intensity exercises exerted more positive effects on the elevation of the concentration of myokines than less muscle contraction of high intensity exercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It remains unclear whether initial compact lipiodol uptake after transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is associated with improved survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). AIM To reveal the clinical relevance of compact lipiodolisation after TACE. METHODS We studied 490 patients with unresectable HCC who had first been treated with TACE. Compact lipiodolisation was defined as the absence of an arterial enhancing lesion, reflecting complete lipiodol uptake, as assessed by dynamic computed tomography (CT) 1 month after treatment. The rate of initial compact lipiodolisation was analysed according to multiplicity and size of tumour, and survival of patients who achieved compact lipiodolisation was compared to that of patients who did not. RESULTS Of the 490 patients, 409 (83.5%) were in Child-Pugh class A and 81 (16.5%) in class B. The rate of initial compact lipiodolisation in single HCCs was higher than that in multinodular HCCs (33.7% vs. 14.6%, P < 0.001). Among single HCCs, the rate of compact lipiodolisation in tumours ≤5, 5-10 and >10 cm was 46.6%, 13.6%, and 0% respectively. The 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates of patients with compact uptake were 92.7%, 70.7% and 52.4% compared to 60.8%, 28.0% and 16.9% in patients with noncompact lipiodolisation. Multivariate analysis revealed that Child-Pugh class, alpha-fetoprotein level, tumour node metastasis stage, portal vein thrombosis and initial compact lipiodolisation were independent predictors of survival. CONCLUSIONS Initial compact lipiodol uptake after transarterial chemoembolisation is associated with improved survival in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. Accordingly, initial complete lipiodolisation should be considered a relevant therapeutic target.

Abstract
In January 2010, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) occurred for the first time in 8 years in Korea. The outbreaks were because of A serotype, different from the O type, which had occurred previously in 2000 and 2002. The FMD outbreaks were identified in seven farms, consisting of six cattle farms where viruses were detected and one deer farm where only FMDV antibody was detected. The seven farms were within 9.3 km of each other. All susceptible animals within 10 km radius of the outbreak farms were placed under movement restrictions for 3-11 weeks. No vaccination took place to facilitate the clinical observation of infected animals and virus detection. After clinical observations and serological tests within the control zones showed no evidence of FMD infection, the movement restrictions were lifted, followed by FMD-free declaration (23 March) at 80 days after the first outbreak on 2 January. This communication describes the outbreak of FMD A serotype, and control measures applied to eradicate the disease in Korea.

Abstract
In an oxygen-depleted environment, endothelial cells initiate an adaptive pattern of synthesis, which may enable them to survive hypoxic crises. Using high-resolution two-dimensional gel electrophoresis in conjunction with mass spectroscopy, we obtained a 24 differential display of proteins in the pancreatic endothelial cell line, MS-1, at four time points following induction of hypoxia. The induction of Wee1 under hypoxia was confirmed both at the mRNA and protein levels. The phosphorylation of cell division cycle 2, which is downstream of Wee1, was also increased after hypoxic exposure. In addition, pre-exposure to hypoxia attenuated a decrease in hydrogen peroxide-induced cell number. The induction of bax (a pro-apoptotic protein) and reduction of bcl (an anti-apoptotic protein) after hypoxia stimulus were also attenuated by hypoxic pre-exposure. Moreover, hydrogen peroxide-induced morphologic damage did not appear in the wild-type Wee1-expressing cells. Taken together, our results suggest that Wee1 may have important role in hypoxia- induced pathophysiological situations in endothelial cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) expression and fibrosis in the testis of rats with surgically induced varicocele. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 47 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were arranged in 3 groups, namely group 1 (varicocele operation 4 weeks ago, n=10; sham operation 4 weeks ago, n=5), group 2 (8 weeks, n=11; n=5), and group 3 (12 weeks, n=11; n=5). The rats in every group underwent bilateral orchiectomy 4, 8, and 12 weeks after the operations, respectively. HIF-1α and CTGF expression of both testes in group 3 were studied by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry. Fibrotic change was assessed by quantitative image analysis. RESULTS HIF-1α mRNA expression in testes tissues in varicocele operation and sham controls showed no significant differences in RT-PCR. However, CTGF mRNA expressions in left testes were found to be significantly different between varicocele operation and sham controls. HIF-1α staining was present in both testes of all specimens and CTGF staining was present in 10 left and 8 right testes of 11 specimens. However HIF-1α and CTGF staining were absent in control group. There were significant fibrotic changes of both testes in groups 2 and 3. There were significant differences in fibrotic change along the durations of surgical varicocele. CONCLUSIONS This study reveals that experimental varicocele in the rat is associated with HIF-1α and CTGF expression and it is accompanied by fibrotic change in the testis.

Abstract
A magnet system for a 28 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source is being developed by the Korea Basic Science Institute. The configuration of the magnet system consists of 3 solenoid coils for a mirror magnetic field and 6 racetrack coils for a hexapole magnetic field. They can generate axial magnetic fields of 3.6 T at the beam injection part and 2.2 T at the extraction part. A radial magnetic field of 2.1 T is achievable at the plasma chamber wall. A step type winding process was employed in fabricating the hexapole coil. The winding technique was confirmed through repeated cooling tests. Superconducting magnets and a cryostat system are currently being manufactured.

Abstract
A novel disposable transnasal esophagoscope, the E.G. Scan (IntroMedic Co. Ltd., Seoul, Korea), was developed for the evaluation of esophageal diseases while eliminating the inconvenience associated with sterilization, portability, patient monitoring, complications, and the economic burden of sedation. The feasibility, safety, and tolerability of the first version of the E.G. Scan was evaluated in this pilot study. Nasal esophagoscopy was performed successfully in 46 patients with known or suspected esophageal diseases. At least 50% of the Z-line was visualized by the E.G. Scan in 38 (82.6%) of 46 patients. Abnormalities were identified in 27 patients: erosive esophagitis (n=18), Barrett's esophagus (n=1), esophageal varices (n=7), and esophageal candidiasis (n=1). Nasal pain was absent or mild in most patients, and adverse events were not observed. Further technical improvement of the E.G. Scan would increase the diagnostic usefulness in future clinical practice.

Abstract
AIMS The purpose of this study was to develop a general method for the facile development of a new DNA biosensor which utilizes streptavidin-displayed spores as a molecular machinery. METHODS AND RESULTS Fluorescence spectroscopy was used as a monitoring tool for the streptavidin displayed on the surface of Bacillus thuringiensis spores and as a diagnosis method for DNA detection. As a proof-of-concept, four pathogenic bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia were used for the detection of pathogenic species. In addition, a set of mutant variants of Wilson's disease were also used for the detection of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in this system. CONCLUSIONS This strategy, utilizing streptavidin-displayed spores, is capable of capturing DNA targets for the detection of pathogenic bacteria and for mutation analysis in Wilson's disease. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This approach could be useful as a simple platform for developing sensitive spore-based biosensors for any desired DNA targets in diagnostic applications.

Abstract
We investigate the caesium concentrations in soils in mountain areas near Gori nuclear power plant in Korea, focusing on the measurement limits to the (134)Cs. In order to lower the minimum detectable amount (MDA) of activity for the (134)Cs, we have used the ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP) precipitation method to get rid of the (40)K existing in natural radioactivity, which reduces the MDA activity about 10 times smaller than those without the AMP precipitation method. The MDA results for the (134)Cs were found to be in the range between 0.015 and 0.044 Bq/kg-dry weight. In order to diminish the background, we also have measured a part of the soil samples in Yangyang, a small town in the east coast of Korea. However, it turns out that in order to detect the (134)Cs in the samples the MDA should be reduced to the level of mBq/kg-dry weight.

BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies have shown inconsistent results for the association between body size and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. Inconsistencies may be because of the reliance on self-reported measures of body size. OBJECTIVE We examined the association of self-reported and directly assessed anthropometric data (body height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist, hip, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and chest circumference) with CRC risk in the EPIC-Norfolk study. DESIGN A total of 20,608 participants with complete self-reported and measured height and weight and without any history of cancer were followed up an average of 11 years, during which 357 incident CRC cases were recorded. Hazard Ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS After adjustment for confounders, HRs among women in the highest quintile of the body size measure relative to the lowest quintile showed that measured height (HR=1.98, 95% CI=1.19-3.28, P (trend)=0.009), measured waist circumference (HR=1.65, 95% CI=0.97-2.86, P (trend)=0.009) and measured WHR (HR=2.07, 95% CI=1.17-3.67, P (trend)=0.001) were associated with increased CRC risk. Associations using corresponding self-reported measures were attenuated and not statistically significant. Conversely, the association of BMI with CRC risk in women was weaker using measured BMI (HR=1.57, 95% CI=0.91-2.73, P (trend)=0.05) compared with self-reported BMI (HR=1.97, 95% CI=1.18-3.30, P (trend)=0.02). In men no significantly increased CRC risk was observed with any of the anthropometric measures. CONCLUSIONS Measured height, waist circumference and WHR were associated with CRC risk in women, whereas any significant associations with those measures were attenuated when self-reported data were used.

Abstract
AIMS To determine whether glucose in growth medium affects secondary metabolite production and biocontrol efficacy of Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6. METHODS AND RESULTS The secondary metabolites pyrrolnitrin and phenazines antagonize phytopathogenic fungi. The expression of the prnA gene encoding tryptophan halogenase, the first step in pyrrolnitrin biosynthesis, required the stationary-phase sigma factor, RpoS. Mutations in rpoS and prnA in Ps. chlororaphis O6 eliminated antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium graminearum. Pyrrolnitrin production was reduced by glucose in growth media, whereas phenazine levels were increased. The efficacy of Ps. chlororaphis O6 in the biocontrol of tomato late blight was reduced by addition of glucose to the growth medium. CONCLUSIONS Regulation by glucose of pyrrolnitrin production influenced the efficacy of the biocontrol of tomato leaf blight. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The nutritional regulation of secondary metabolite production from a soil pseudomonad may account, at least in part, for the variability of biocontrol under field conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aspirin has received increasing attention owing to its potential as a chemopreventive agent against lung cancer. Previous observational studies have reported inconsistent findings on this issue. We investigated the association between aspirin use and risk for lung cancer by conducting a meta-analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Relevant studies were identified by searching Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library to December 2009. We also reviewed relevant bibliographies from the retrieved articles. Two authors independently extracted data and assessed study quality. Disagreements were resolved by consensus. RESULTS Fifteen studies (six case-control studies and nine prospective cohort studies) were included in the final meta-analysis. When all studies were pooled, the odds ratio (OR) of aspirin use for lung cancer risk was 0.86 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.76-0.98]. In subgroup meta-analyses, there was no association between aspirin use and lung cancer risk among cohort studies (relative risk, 0.97; 95% CI 0.87-1.08), while there was a significant association among case-control studies (OR, 0.74; 95% CI 0.57-0.99). In a subgroup meta-analysis by quality of study methodology, a significant protective effect of aspirin use on lung cancer was observed only among eight low-quality studies (OR, 0.82; 95% CI 0.68-0.99), but not among seven high-quality studies (OR, 0.90; 95% CI 0.76-1.07). CONCLUSIONS Overall, the findings of this meta-analysis support that there was no association between aspirin use and lung cancer risk. Our findings should be confirmed in future prospective cohort studies or randomized, controlled trials.

Abstract
This study compared the ability of the Zeus multifunctional anaesthesia system to control haemodynamic response to surgical stimulation in semi-closed (SCA) or closed circuit anaesthesia (CCA) modes. Fifty patients undergoing gynaecological surgery were randomly assigned to SCA or CCA. Anaesthesia was induced with 2 mg propofol and 0.9 mg/kg rocuronium, intravenously, and maintained using sevoflurane (minimum alveolar concentration [MAC], 1.0) using 2 l/min oxygen plus 2 l/min nitrous oxide (SCA 4 l/min group) or 50% oxygen plus 50% nitrous oxide (CCA group). An increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) > 20% above baseline in response to surgical stimulation provoked a stepwise increase in sevoflurane (1.3 MAC and then 1.6 MAC), followed by fentanyl 1 pg/kg intravenously (rescue drug). The time required for MAP to return to within 10% of baseline was significantly shorter in the CCA group (6.4 +/- 3.6 min) compared with the SCA 4 l/min group (10.2 +/- 6.0 min). The percentage of patients requiring fentanyl was significantly greater in the SCA 4 l/min group than in the CCA group. In conclusion, CCA controlled acute haemodynamic responses to surgical stimuli more successfully and rapidly than SCA 4 l/min, using a multifunctional anaesthesia machine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was conducted to evaluate whether smoking history and the standardized uptake value (SUV) of 2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) uptake are associated with unexpected pathological N2 status (pN2) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PATIENTS AND METHODS We analyzed the data of 220 patients who underwent surgical resection with clinical N2-negative status on computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET)-CT. The maximum SUV of primary tumor was chosen for logistic analysis. RESULTS Seventy-two patients (33%) had never smoked. The SUV ranged from 1.0 to 29.0 (median 9.1). In univariate analysis, adenocarcinomas (P = 0.019), female gender (P = 0.010), N1 on CT (P = 0.025), and N1 PET-CT (P = 0.001) were associated with a high probability of pN2. The proportion of pN2 in never smokers was higher than in ever smokers (26% versus 10% respectively; P = 0.002). The SUV remained on a multivariate logistic model (odds ratio 1.1; 95% confidence interval 1.0-1.2; P = 0.010) and it had a better predictive value in never smokers than in ever smokers (P = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS This study indicates an association between smoking history and pN2 in clinically negative N2 NSCLC. The different roles of FDG uptake were also suggested based on smoking history.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate associations of obstructive and restrictive patterns of ventilatory dysfunction with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in Koreans. METHODS We cross-sectionally examined clinical, laboratory, and pulmonary function data on 35,456 Korean adults (age 18-93 years, 40% women) recorded during regular health check-ups. Insulin resistance (IR) was determined from fasting serum insulin concentration and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). RESULTS Individuals with type 2 DM and those with pre-diabetes (impaired fasting glucose levels) showed a higher prevalence of both restrictive (18% and 11%, respectively, VS. 8%; P<0.01) and obstructive (4.3% and 3.2%, respectively, VS. 2.3%; P<0.01) ventilatory dysfunction than did individuals with normal fasting glucose levels. Compared to subjects with normal ventilatory function, those with restrictive or obstructive ventilatory dysfunction were older, had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and had elevated glucose and HbA1c levels. However, serum triglyceride, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR were higher only in subjects with restrictive ventilatory dysfunction, and not in those with obstructive ventilatory dysfunction. On logistic regression analysis, the age and gender-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of restrictive ventilatory dysfunction for type 2 DM was 1.59 (95% confidence interval, 1.43-1.78). The increased OR remained significant after controlling for exercise, drinking, and smoking habits, presence of hypertension, body mass index, and waist circumference (OR=1.38 [1.23-1.55]). However, further adjustment for HOMA-IR attenuated the OR (1.11 [0.97-1.26]), making the OR statistically insignificant. In contrast, obstructive ventilatory dysfunction was not independently related to type 2 DM status. CONCLUSION Restrictive ventilatory dysfunction is independently associated with type 2 DM, probably VIA insulin resistance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of body size and sociodemographic characteristics on differences between self-reported (SR) and measured anthropometric data in men and women. SUBJECTS/METHODS This study comprises 9933 men and 11,856 women aged 39-79 years at baseline survey (1993-1997) in the EPIC-Norfolk study (Norfolk arm of the European Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Study). The effects of sex, measured height, weight, age group, educational level and social class on differences between SR and measured weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist, hip and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were examined. RESULTS There were systematic differences between SR and measured anthropometric measurements by sex, measured height, weight and sociodemographic characteristics. Height was overestimated in both sexes while weight, waist, hip, and consequently, BMI and WHR were underestimated. Being male, shorter, heavier, older, and having no educational qualifications and manual occupation were independently associated with overreporting of height, and underreporting of weight was associated independently with being female, shorter, heavier, younger age, and higher education level and social class. Underreporting of waist circumference was strongly associated with being female and higher measured waist circumference, while underreporting of hip circumference was associated with being male and higher measured hip circumference. Furthermore, there was substantial degree of misclassification of BMI and waist circumference categories for both general and central obesity associated with SR data. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that errors in SR anthropometric data, especially waist and hip circumference are influenced by actual body size as well as sociodemographic characteristics. These systematic differences may influence associations between SR anthropometric measures and health outcomes in epidemiological studies.

Abstract
AIM The objective of this study was to evaluate the optimal dose, efficacy and safety of a novel dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-IV) inhibitor, LC15-0444, in Korean subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated by diet and exercise. METHODS This study was a double-blind, randomized, multicenter and parallel-group, dose-range finding study. We enrolled 145 patients (91 men and 54 women) with a median age of 53 years and a median body mass index of 25.1 kg/m(2) . The median baseline fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was 8.1 mmol/l, the median HbA1c was 7.9% and the median time since the diagnosis of diabetes was 3 years. After 2 weeks of an exercise/diet programme followed by 2 weeks of a placebo period, the subjects were randomized to one of the four following groups for a 12-week active treatment period: placebo and 50, 100 or 200 mg of LC15-0444. RESULTS All three doses of LC15-0444 significantly reduced the HbA1c from baseline compared to the placebo group (-0.06 vs. -0.98, -0.74 and -0.78% in the placebo and 50, 100 and 200 mg groups, respectively), without a significant difference between the doses. Subjects with a higher baseline HbA1c (≥8.5%) had a greater reduction in HbA1c. Insulin secretory function, as assessed using homeostasis model assessment-beta cell, C-peptide and the insulinogenic index, improved significantly with LC15-0444 treatment. Insulin sensitivity, as assessed using homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance, also improved significantly after 12 weeks of treatment. The 50 and 200 mg groups had significantly reduced total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels at 12 weeks compared to the placebo group. No dosage of LC15-0444 affected weight or waist circumference. The incidences of adverse events were similar in all study subjects. CONCLUSIONS LC15-0444 monotherapy (50 mg for 12 weeks) improved the HbA1c, FPG level, oral glucose tolerance test results, β-cell function and insulin sensitivity measures, and was well tolerated in Korean subjects with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a candidate molecule for influencing the clinical response to antidepressant treatment. The aims of this study were to determine the relationship between the Val66Met polymorphism in the BDNF gene and the response to mirtazapine in 243 Korean subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD). The reduction in the Hamilton Depression score over the 8-week treatment period was not influenced by BDNF V66M genotypes. A marginal effect of genotype on somatic anxiety score was observed at baseline (P = 0.047 in the dominant model). However, genotype-time interaction had no effect on somatic anxiety score after the 8-week a treatment period. Plasma BDNF levels tended to increase during mirtazapine treatment, although without statistical significance (P = 0.055). After 8 weeks of mirtazapine treatment, plasma BDNF levels were higher in Met allele homozygotes (1499.7 ± 370.6 ng/mL) than in Val allele carriers (649.7 ± 158.5 ng/mL, P = 0.049). Our results do not support the hypothesis that the Val66Met promoter polymorphism in the BDNF gene influences the therapeutic response to mirtazapine in Korean MDD patients. However, our data indicate that this polymorphism results in increased plasma BDNF after mirtazapine treatment.
