Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) characteristics of thigh muscles in patients with polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM). METHODS 12 patients with known PM/DM and 10 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. Both DTI and conventional MR sequences were performed on both thighs of all subjects. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), fractional anisotropy (FA) and three eigenvalues were compared between the PM/DM group and the healthy group. One-way analysis of variance and Student's t-test were used for statistical analyses with a significance of p < 0.05. RESULTS In the healthy group, the vastus intermedius muscle showed the highest ADC value and the gracilis (GA) muscle showed the lowest ADC value. These results were statistically significant when compared with other muscles (p < 0.05). The GA, semi-tendinosus and semi-membranosus muscles showed higher FA values than the other three thigh muscles (p < 0.05). The mean ADC value and three eigenvalues of oedematous muscles in the PM/DM group were higher on average and showed a statistically significant difference when compared with unaffected (non-oedematous muscles in patients) and normal muscles (p < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the mean FA value between oedematous and normal muscles. The mean ADC, FA and three eigenvalues in unaffected muscles (in patients) showed no statistical differences from those in normal muscles (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION DTI can be used to quantitatively evaluate the anisotropic diffusion characteristics of muscles in patients with PM/DM. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE A new application of DTI is proposed for inflammatory myopathies. The results show that ADC and the three eigenvalues were significantly different between diseased and normal muscles, a finding of potential value in both diagnosis and treatment monitoring of myopathies.

Abstract
Innate immune and inflammatory responses are involved in myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Interleukin (IL)-37 is a newly identified member of the IL-1 family, and functions as a fundamental inhibitor of innate immunity and inflammation. However, its role in myocardial I/R injury remains unknown. I/R or sham operations were performed on male C57BL/6J mice. I/R mice received an injection of recombinant human IL-37 or vehicle, immediately before reperfusion. Compared with vehicle treatment, mice treated with IL-37 showed an obvious amelioration of the I/R injury, as demonstrated by reduced infarct size, decreased cardiac troponin T level and improved cardiac function. This protective effect was associated with the ability of IL-37 to suppress production of proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines and neutrophil infiltration, which together contributed to a decrease in cardiomyocyte apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In addition, we found that IL-37 inhibited the up-regulation of Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4 expression and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) activation after I/R, while increasing the anti-inflammatory IL-10 level. Moreover, the administration of anti-IL-10R antibody abolished the protective effects of IL-37 in I/R injury. In-vitro experiments further demonstrated that IL-37 protected cardiomyocytes from apoptosis under I/R condition, and suppressed the migration ability of neutrophils towards the chemokine LIX. In conclusion, IL-37 plays a protective role against mouse myocardial I/R injury, offering a promising therapeutic medium for myocardial I/R injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are fatal adverse cutaneous drug reactions which may be induced by phenytoin (PHT) or lamotrigine (LTG). The objective of this study was to analyze the association of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B*1502 and PHT or LTG induced SJS/TEN. PATIENTS AND METHODS All the participants were epileptic patients and the SJS/TEN were induced by PHT or LTG. The presence or absence of the HLA-B*1502 allele of all the patients was determined. ISI Web of Knowledge, PubMed, ScienceDirect, EMBASE, and Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) data were searched for the literature published before April 2014. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.2 software. RESULTS From 256 citations, 6 English studies were included that involved 480 epilepsy patients. Meta-analysis showed that odd ratio (OR) of PHT and LTG were 5.65 [95% CI: 2.76-11.57] and 4.51 [95% CI: 1.57-12.98], respectively. Funnel plot analysis showed symmetry, indicting less possible publication bias and the results were partly reliable. CONCLUSION There is a significant association between HLA-B*1502 and PHT or LTG-induced SJS/TEN.

Abstract
Reversibly switching interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) of magnetic semiconductor multilayers between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) modes is a difficult but key issue for fabricating semiconductor giant magnetoresistance devices. Here, we show that such tunable IEC is achievable around room temperature in Co-doped TiO2/VO2 diluted magnetic semiconductor multilayers. On the basis of first-principles calculations of electronic structure and fermiology, it is clarified that, associated with the metal-insulator transition (MIT) of nanosized VO2 spacers, exotic short-range magnetic orders are developed in the multilayers so that the IEC can be tuned reversibly from FM mode to AFM mode by varying temperature crossing the MIT (∼340 K).

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Aim of this study was to evaluate factors which could possibly affect the outcome of patients failing to achieve pathological complete response (pCR) after anthracycline-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) for breast cancer, and built a prognostic model to predict disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).
Material and Methods: We retrospectively collected data of 199 stage II-III breast cancer patients who had failed to achieve pathological complete response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in Shanghai Cancer Hospital. The NCT regimens were NE (navelbine 25mg/m2, day 1, 8 and epirubicin 60mg/m2, day 1; every three weeks) or CEF (cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m2, day 1; epirubicin 60 mg/m2, day 1 and 5-fluorouracil 600 mg/m2, day 1; every three weeks) for a median treatment course of 3 cycles. To develop the prognostic model, variables at baseline(age, menopausal status, tumor size, node status, ER, PR, and HER-2) and at surgery(tumor size, grade, histotype, node status, vascular invasion, ER, PR, HER-2, Cathpesin-D, P53, Topo-IIα, Nm-23, Bcl-2, BAX, MDR, GSTn, PS2, P27, Cyclin D1 and Ki-67) were investigated. Multivariate Cox regression model and Kaplan-Meier method was used to build the model, and show the discrimination of DFS and OS in different risk groups.
Results: By multivariate analysis, ≥4 lymph node metastasis (HR=1.9, P=0.009), Cath-D positive (HR=2.5, P=0.006), and Ki-67 index≥20% (HR=1.9, P=0.001) at surgery were independent predictors for lower DFS and OS rate among non-pCR responders. We built a prognostic scoring model on the basis of these variables, in which ≥4+ nodes, Cath-D + or Ki-67 index≥20% would contribute 1 point separately to the risk score. The 5-year DFS rates in low(0 point), intermediate-low(1 point), intermediate-high(2 points) and high risk groups(3 points) were 94%, 65%, 43%, and 28%, respectively (Log-rank teat p<0.001). The 5-year OS rates in these four groups were 94%, 84%, 66% and 34%, respectively (Log-rank test p<0.001).
Conclusion: Post-NCT node status, Cathpesin-D and Ki-67 were used to develop a prognostic model which could simply discriminate patients with poor prognosis among non-pCR responders after anthracycline-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and might help to tailor further individualized treatment strategies.

Abstract
Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis tritici (Pst)) is one of the most destructive diseases of wheat in the world. Exploiting and utilizing stripe rust resistance genes of wild species has become an essential strategy for resistance breeding. Psathyrostachyshuashanica Keng ex Kuo is a wild species in Triticeae that has been used for wheat improvement because of its high resistance or immunity to stripe rust. In this study, 9 wheat-P. huashanica addition lines were characterized by Giemsa C-banding, genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), and disease resistance evaluation. Giemsa C-banding and GISH demonstrated that lines 163-5, 165-1, 183-5, 240-3, and 240-4 are P. huashanica 3Ns chromosome monosomic addition lines; lines 183-1 and 183-20 are P. huashanica 3Ns chromosome disomic addition lines; line 165-20 is a P. huashanica 3Ns and 4Ns chromosomes double disomic addition line, and line 219-1 is a P. huashanica 1Ns and 3Ns/5A chromosomes double disomic addition-substitution line. All these addition lines with P. huashanica 3Ns chromosome(s) expressed high resistance or immunity to stripe rust. By comparing the series of wheat-P. huashanica chromosome addition lines, we concluded that the P. huashanica 3Ns chromosome carries the gene(s) for resistance or immunity to stripe rust. These addition lines can be used as a donor source of novel stripe rust resistance to wheat breeding programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Specific immunonutrients may reduce the incidence of postoperative complications and shorten recovery time. This randomized trial evaluated the clinical efficacy of a fish oil emulsion on outcome and immune function after gastrointestinal cancer surgery. METHODS A total of 206 patients with gastrointestinal or colonic cancer were randomized to receive isocaloric and isonitrogenous intravenous infusions of either soybean oil alone (1.2 g per kg bodyweight per day; control group, 103 analysed) or soybean plus fish oil emulsion (1.0 and 0.2 g per kg per day respectively; treatment group, 100 analysed) over 20-24 h daily for 7 days after surgery. RESULTS Baseline data were comparable in the two groups. There were fewer infectious complications (four versus 12 on day 8; P = 0.066), systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) was significantly less common (four versus 13; P = 0.039) and hospital stay was significantly shorter (mean(s.d.) 15(5) versus 17(8) days; P = 0.041) in the treatment group. Total postoperative medical costs were comparable in the two groups (mean(s.d.) US $ 1269(254) and 1302(324) in treatment and control groups respectively; P = 0.424). The median (interquartile range) difference in CD4/CD8 between days 1 and 8 after surgery was + 0.30 (0.06 to 0.79) in patients receiving fish oil and + 0.20 (-0.19 to 0.55) in controls (P = 0.021). No severe adverse events occurred in either group. CONCLUSION Fish oil emulsion-supplemented parenteral nutrition significantly reduced SIRS and length of hospital stay. These clinical benefits may be related to normalization of cellular immune functions and modulation of the inflammatory response.
