Abstract
Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) has recently emerged as a platform to engineer strongly correlated flat bands. We reveal the normal-state structural and electronic properties of TTG using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at twist angles for which superconductivity has been observed. Real trilayer samples undergo a strong reconstruction of the moiré lattice, which locks layers into near-magic-angle, mirror symmetric domains comparable in size with the superconducting coherence length. This relaxation introduces an array of localized twist-angle faults, termed twistons and moiré solitons, whose electronic structure deviates strongly from the background regions, leading to a doping-dependent, spatially granular electronic landscape. The Fermi-level density of states is maximally uniform at dopings for which superconductivity has been observed in transport measurements.

Abstract
Nonequilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated systems constitutes a fascinating problem of condensed matter physics with many open questions. Here, we investigate the relaxation dynamics of Landau-quantized electron system into spin-valley polarized ground state in a gate-tunable MoSe_{2} monolayer subjected to a strong magnetic field. The system is driven out of equilibrium with optically injected excitons that depolarize the electron spins and the subsequent electron spin-valley relaxation is probed in time-resolved experiments. We demonstrate that both the relaxation and light-induced depolarization rates at millikelvin temperatures sensitively depend on the Landau level filling factor: the relaxation is enhanced whenever the electrons form an integer quantum Hall liquid and slows down appreciably at noninteger fillings, while the depolarization rate exhibits an opposite behavior. Our findings suggest that spin-valley dynamics may be used as a tool to investigate the interplay between the effects of disorder and strong interactions in the electronic ground state.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Prior coronary optical coherence tomography (OCT)-near infrared auto-fluorescence (NIRAF) imaging data has shown a correlation between high-risk morphological features and NIRAF signal intensity. This study aims to understand the histopathological origins of NIRAF in human cadaver coronary arteries. METHODS Ex vivo intracoronary OCT-NIRAF imaging was performed on coronary arteries prosected from 23 fresh human cadaver hearts. Arteries with elevated NIRAF were formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded. Microscopic images of immunostained Glycophorin A (indicating intraplaque hemorrhage) and Sudan Black (indicating ceroid after fixation) stained slides were compared with confocal NIRAF images (ex. 635 nm, em. 655-755 nm) from adjacent unstained slides in each section. Different images from the same section were registered via luminal morphology. Confocal NIRAF-positive 45° sectors were compared to immunohistochemistry and colocalization between NIRAF and intraplaque hemorrhage or ceroid was quantified by Manders' overlap and Dice similarity coefficients. RESULTS Thirty-one coronary arteries from 14 hearts demonstrated ≥1.5 times higher NIRAF signal than background, and 429 sections were created from them, including 54 sections (12.6%) with high-risk plaques. Within 112 confocal NIRAF-positive 45° sectors, 65 sectors (58.0%) showed both Glycophorin A-positive and Sudan Black-positive, while 7 sectors (6.3%) and 40 sectors (33.6%) only showed Glycophorin A-positive or Sudan black-positive, respectively. A two-tailed McNemar's test showed that Sudan Black more closely corresponded to confocal NIRAF than Glycophorin A (p < 1.0 × 10-6). NIRAF was also found to spatially associate with both Glycophorin A and Sudan Black, with stronger colocalization between Sudan Black and NIRAF (Manders: 0.19 ± 0.15 vs. 0.13 ± 0.14, p < 0.005; Dice: 0.072 ± 0.096 vs. 0.060 ± 0.090, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS As ceroid associates with oxidative stress and intraplaque hemorrhage is implicated in rapid lesion progression, these results suggest that NIRAF provides additional, complementary information to morphologic imaging that may aid in identifying high-risk coronary plaques via translatable intracoronary OCT-NIRAF imaging.

Abstract
The mechanism of our previously reported catalytic asymmetric bromocyclization reactions using 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl (BINAP) monoxide was examined in detail by the means of control experiments, NMR studies, X-ray structure analysis, and CryoSpray electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis. The chiral BINAP monoxide was transformed to a key catalyst precursor, proton-bridged bisphosphine oxide complex (POHOP·Br), in the presence of N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) and contaminating water. The thus-formed POHOP further reacts with NBS to afford BINAP dioxide and molecular bromine (Br2) simultaneously in equimolar amounts. While the resulting Br2 is activated by NBS to form a more reactive brominating reagent (Br2─NBS), BINAP dioxide serves as a bifunctional catalyst, acting as both a Lewis base that reacts with Br2─NBS to form a chiral brominating agent (P═O+─Br) and also as a Brønsted base for the activation of the substrate. By taking advantage of this novel concerted Lewis/Brønsted base catalysis by BINAP dioxide, we achieved the first regio- and chemodivergent parallel kinetic resolutions (PKRs) of racemic unsymmetrical bisallylic amides via bromocyclization.

Abstract
In thermodynamic equilibrium, current in metallic systems is carried by electronic states near the Fermi energy, whereas the filled bands underneath contribute little to conduction. Here, we describe a very different regime in which carrier distribution in graphene and its superlattices is shifted so far from equilibrium that the filled bands start playing an essential role, leading to a critical-current behavior. The criticalities develop upon the velocity of electron flow reaching the Fermi velocity. Key signatures of the out-of-equilibrium state are current-voltage characteristics that resemble those of superconductors, sharp peaks in differential resistance, sign reversal of the Hall effect, and a marked anomaly caused by the Schwinger-like production of hot electron-hole plasma. The observed behavior is expected to be common to all graphene-based superlattices.

Abstract
Strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can have a profound influence on the electronic properties of materials. We examined their combined influence on a two-dimensional electronic system at the atomic interface between magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene and a tungsten diselenide crystal. We found that strong electron correlation within the moiré flatband stabilizes correlated insulating states at both quarter and half filling, and that SOC transforms these Mott-like insulators into ferromagnets, as evidenced by a robust anomalous Hall effect with hysteretic switching behavior. The coupling between spin and valley degrees of freedom could be demonstrated through control of the magnetic order with an in-plane magnetic field or a perpendicular electric field. Our findings establish an experimental knob to engineer topological properties of moiré bands in twisted bilayer graphene and related systems.

Abstract
The presence of "upstream" modes, moving against the direction of charge current flow in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases, is critical for the emergence of renormalized modes with exotic quantum statistics. Detection of excess noise at the edge is a smoking gun for the presence of upstream modes. Here, we report noise measurements at the edges of FQH states realized in dual graphite-gated bilayer graphene devices. A noiseless dc current is injected at one of the edge contacts, and the noise generated at contacts at length, L = 4 μm and 10 μm away along the upstream direction is studied. For integer and particle-like FQH states, no detectable noise is measured. By contrast, for "hole-conjugate" FQH states, we detect a strong noise proportional to the injected current, unambiguously proving the existence of upstream modes. The noise magnitude remains independent of length, which matches our theoretical analysis demonstrating the ballistic nature of upstream energy transport, quite distinct from the diffusive propagation reported earlier in GaAs-based systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine the association of muscle evaluation, including muscle ultrasound, with hospital-associated disability (HAD), focusing on ADL categories. DESIGN A prospective observational cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS We recruited patients aged 65 years or older who were admitted to the geriatric ward of an acute hospital between October 2019 and September 2021. MEASUREMENTS Handgrip strength, bioimpedance analyzer-determined skeletal muscle mass, bilateral thigh muscle thickness (BATT), and the echo intensity of the rectus femoris on muscle ultrasound were performed as muscle assessments. HAD was evaluated separately for mobility impairments and self-care impairments. RESULTS In total, 256 individuals (mean age, 85.2 years; male sex, 41.8%) were analyzed. HAD in mobility was more common than HAD in self-care (37.5% vs. 30.0%). Only BATT was independently associated with HAD in mobility in multiple logistic regression analysis. There was no significant association between muscle indicators and HAD in self-care. CONCLUSION A lower BATT was associated with a higher prevalence of HAD in mobility, suggesting the need to reconsider muscle assessment methods in hospitalized older adults. In addition, approaches other than physical may be required, such as psychosocial and environmental interventions to improve HAD in self-care.

Abstract
Organomagnesium compounds, represented by the Grignard reagents, are one of the most classical yet versatile carbanion species which have widely been utilized in synthetic chemistry. These reagents are typically prepared via oxidative addition of organic halides to magnesium metals, via halogen-magnesium exchange between halo(hetero)arenes and organomagnesium reagents or via deprotonative magnesiation of prefunctionalized (hetero)arenes. On the other hand, recent studies have demonstrated that the organo-alkaline earth metal complexes including those based on heavier alkaline earth metals such as calcium, strontium and barium could be generated from readily available non-polar unsaturated molecules such as alkenes, alkynes, 1,3-enynes and arenes through unique metallation processes. Nonetheless, the resulting organo-alkaline earth metal complexes could be further functionalized with a variety of electrophiles in various reaction modes. In particular, organocalcium, strontium and barium species have shown unprecedented reactivity in the downstream functionalization, which could not be observed in the reactivity of organomagnesium complexes. This perspective will focus on the newly emerging protocols for the generation of organo-alkaline earth metal complexes from non-polar unsaturated molecules and their applications in chemical synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
We report on finite bias spectroscopy measurements of the two-electron spectrum in a gate defined bilayer graphene (BLG) quantum dot for varying magnetic fields. The spin and valley degree of freedom in BLG give rise to multiplets of six orbital symmetric and ten orbital antisymmetric states. We find that orbital symmetric states are lower in energy and separated by ≈ 0.4-0.8 meV from orbital antisymmetric states. The symmetric multiplet exhibits an additional energy splitting of its six states of ≈ 0.15-0.5 meV due to lattice scale interactions. The experimental observations are supported by theoretical calculations, which allow to determine that intervalley scattering and "current-current" interaction constants are of the same magnitude in BLG.

Abstract
Aspergillus fumigatus-related species are responsible for causing aspergillosis, which is a fatal infectious disease. Recently, there has been a series of reports of A. fumigatus-related species that are resistant to azole drugs used in clinical practice for the treatment of fungal infections. Some of these species have been isolated from outdoor environments. Testing the drug susceptibility of the strains from outdoor environments, therefore, is important. In this study, we isolated and cultured 72 strains of A. fumigatus-related species from the outdoor environment in Japan. The isolates identified via morphological observation and molecular phylogenetic analysis were Aspergillus felis, Aspergillus lentulus, Aspergillus pseudoviridinutans, Aspergillus udagawae, and Aspergillus wyomingensis. The results of the drug susceptibility testing revealed that A. felis (6 of 14 strains) and A. pseudoviridinutans (13 of 17 strains) were resistant to itraconazole (ITCZ), with 4 mg/L or higher minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). The voriconazole (VRCZ)-resistant strains with 4 mg/L or higher MICs were A. felis (14 of 14), A. lentulus (4 of 4), A. pseudoviridinutans (15 of 17), A. udagawae (23 of 34), A. wyomingensis (1 of 3), and A. pseudoviridinutans (1 of 3). Among them, A. felis (1 of 14) and A. pseudoviridinutans (7 of 17) demonstrated 8 mg/L or higher MICs for ITCZ and VRCZ. These results indicate that A. fumigatus-related species resistant to ITCZ and VRCZ are widely distributed in outdoor environments in Japan.

Abstract
Different neurophysiological strategies are used to perform angle adjustments during motor tasks such as car driving and force-control tasks using a fixed-rigid pedal. However, the difference in motor unit behavior in response to an increasing exerted force between tasks is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the difference in motor unit responsiveness on increasing force between force and position tasks. Twelve healthy participants performed ramp and hold contractions during ankle plantarflexion at 20% and 30% of the maximal voluntary contraction using a rigid pedal (force task) and a free pedal with an inertial load (position task). High-density surface electromyograms were recorded of the medial gastrocnemius muscle and decomposed into individual motor unit firing patterns. Ninety and hundred and nine motor units could be tracked between different target torques in each task. The mean firing rate increased and firing rate variability decreased on 10% maximal voluntary contraction force gain during both force and position tasks. There were no significant differences in these responses between the two tasks. Our results suggest that the motor unit firing rate is similarly regulated between force and position tasks in the medial gastrocnemius muscle with an increase in the exerted force.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Different neurophysiological strategies are used to perform a force control task and angle adjustment task. Our results showed that motor unit firing rate is similarly regulated between the two tasks in the medial gastrocnemius muscle with an increase in the exerted force. Although it is reported that position tasks contribute to early fatigue, it does not seem to be a particular problem for the increase in force.

Abstract
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which plays an important role in cognitive and
nerve function, is released from skeletal muscle cells into the blood by muscle
contractions and/or electrical muscle stimulation (EMS). However, the influence of EMS
administered by a portable device on BDNF is unclear. The purpose of this case report was
to quantify the influence of EMS administered by a portable device on BDNF and physical
function. Three elderly people (age, 69.7 ± 1.5 years) were included in the present study.
The participants used a portable EMS device to stimulate the bilateral quadriceps muscles
for 8 weeks (23 min for 5 days/week). To determine the effects of EMS, the following
parameters were assessed at baseline, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks (follow-up): knee extensor
strength, muscle mass of the lower limb, Berg balance score, and blood BDNF level. All
outcomes improved after the EMS intervention, but the improvements did not persist for
12 weeks. These findings suggest that portable EMS is potentially useful for improving the
blood BDNF level and physical function.

Background
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for calcified coronary artery remains challenging in the drug-eluting stent (DES) era. The effectiveness of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) and orbital atherectomy system (OAS) is unknown.
Methods
In this retrospective, single-center study, we compared the use of DCBs with second- and third-generation DESs following orbital atherectomy (OA) for calcified de novo coronary lesions. All patients underwent PCI with intravascular imaging. The primary endpoint was major cardiac event, that was a composite of cardiac death, death for unknown cause, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or target lesion revascularization at 1 year.
Results
Between June 2018 and December 2019, 107 patients with coronary lesions were enrolled in this study and divided into two groups: 23 patients in DCB group and 84 patients in DES group. The post-procedure segment percentage diameter stenosis was 23.1% (interquartile range [IQR], 17.7 to 32.5) with DCB versus 14.4% (IQR, 10.0 to 21.2) with DES (P<0.001). Overall adverse event rate for PCI procedure was low: one dissection with DES group, no persistent slow/no-flow, and no perforation with both group. The primary endpoint was not significantly different between 2 groups [DES: 6.0% (5/84), DCB: 0.0% (0/23), log-rank P=0.24].
Conclusions
In calcified coronary artery disease, using DCB following OA is as safe and effective as using DES following OA with respect to 1-year clinical outcomes.

Background
It has been reported that decreased nitric oxide bioavailability due to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the most important causes of coronary artery spasm (CAS). Xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) is the rate-limiting enzyme for uric acid (UA) production and plays a pivotal role in generating ROS. It was reported that the gender differences exist in the impact of serum UA levels on cardiovascular risks. We previously demonstrated that increased plasma XOR activity is significantly associated with the incidence of CAS. However, the gender differences in the impact of plasma XOR activity on CAS remain unclear.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to examine the gender differences in the clinical impact of plasma XOR activity on CAS.
Methods
We investigated plasma XOR activity in 132 patients suspected for CAS (male, n=78; female, n=54), and underwent intracoronary acetylcholine provocation test. XOR activity assay was performed using stable isotope-labeled substrate and liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. Provoked CAS was defined as total or subtotal occlusion (≥90%) with accompanying symptoms of chest pain and/or ischemic ST-segment changes on the electrocardiogram. We excluded the patients who had significant coronary artery stenosis (≥50%) and/or were taking XOR inhibitors.
Results
Plasma XOR activity was significantly lower in female compared with male patients (30.3 pmol/h/mL, interquartile range (IQR) 22.8–42.7 vs. 51.7 pmol/h/mL, IQR 34.7–101.8; P<0.001). CAS was provoked in 36 male patients and 17 female patients, and they each had significantly higher plasma XOR activity compared with those without, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that plasma XOR activity was independently associated with the incidence of CAS in both genders after adjustment for confounding factors. The optimal cut-off values for predicting CAS were lower in female than those in male patients (52.3 vs. 91.6 pmol/h/mL). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that female patients with high XOR activity (≥52.3 pmol/h/mL; odds ratio [OR] 22.6, P<0.001) exhibited a higher incidence of CAS compared with that in male patients (≥91.6 pmol/h/mL; OR 8.2, P<0.001).
Conclusions
Plasma XOR activity was an independent predictor for the incidence of CAS in both genders. The impact of plasma XOR activity on CAS was stronger in female patients than in male patients.

Some patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) experienced sudden death because of sudden symptom deterioration. Thus, an alarm system that could detect early signs of COVID-19 exacerbation beforehand, to prevent serious illness or death of patients while receiving outpatient treatment at home or in hotels is necessary. Here, we tested whether estimated oxygen variations (EOV), a relative physiological scale that represents users' blood oxygen saturation level during sleep measured by Fitbit, predicted COVID-19 symptom exacerbation. Study period was from August to November 2020. We enrolled 23 COVID-19 patients diagnosed by SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction-positive (mean age ± standard deviation, 50.9±20 years; 70% female), let each patient wore the Fitbit for 30 days; COVID-19 symptoms were exacerbated in 6 (26%). High EOV signal (a patient's oxygen level exhibits significant dip and recovery within the index period) had 80% sensitivity before symptom exacerbations, whereas resting heart rate signal only had 50% sensitivity. Coincidental obstructive sleep apnea syndrome confirmed by polysomnography was detected in a patient by consistently high EOV signals. This pilot study successfully detected early COVID-19 symptoms exacerbation by measuring EOV and may help to identify early signs of COVID-19 exacerbation.
