A Water-Compatible NHC-Borane: Photopolymerizations in Water and Rate Constants for Elementary Radical Reactions

Rate constants for important elementary reactions of 2,4-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylidene borane (1) and its derived boryl radical have been measured in the presence and absence of water. Reactions including H-abstraction by tBuO^•, and onward reactions of the derived radical with methyl acrylate (addition), iodopropane (halogen abstraction), and an iodonium salt (oxidation) are unaffected by the presence of a high concentration (1.5 M) of water. Extending these results, borane (1) has been found to be an efficient new co-initiator for the visible light photopolymerization of monomers in the presence of both air and water.

Enantioselective Ir(I)-catalyzed carbocyclization of 1,6-enynes by the chiral counterion strategy

Enantioenriched bicyclo[4.1.0]hept-2-enes were synthesized by Ir(I)-catalyzed carbocyclization of 1,6-enynes. No chiral ligands were used, CO and PPh(3) were the only ligands bound to iridium. Instead, the stereochemical information was localized on the counterion of the catalyst, generated in situ by reaction of Vaska's complex (trans-[IrCl(CO)(PPh(3))(2)]) with a chiral silver phosphate. Enantiomeric excesses up to 93% were obtained when this catalytic mixture was used. (31)P NMR and IR spectroscopy suggest that formation of the trans- [Ir(CO)(PPh(3))(2)](+) moiety occurs by chlorine abstraction. Moreover, density functional theory calculations support a 6-endo-dig cyclization promoted by this cationic moiety. The chiral phosphate anion (O-P*) controls the enantioselectivity through formation of a loose ion pair with the metal center and establishes a C-H···O-P* hydrogen bond with the substrate. This is a rare example of asymmetric counterion-directed transition-metal catalysis and represents the first application of such a strategy to a C-C bond-forming reaction.

Combination of gold catalysis and Selectfluor for the synthesis of fluorinated nitrogen heterocycles

We herein report the synthesis of 3-fluoro-2-methylene-pyrrolidine (3a) and -piperidine (3b) from 1,5- and 1,6-aminoalkynes, respectively, using a combination of a gold-catalyzed hydroamination reaction followed by electrophilic trapping of an intermediate cyclic enamine by Selectfluor. Careful attention was paid to the elucidation of the mechanism and Selectfluor was suggested to play the double role of promoting the oxidation of gold(I) to a gold(III) active species and also the electrophilic fluorination of the enamine intermediates.

Synthesis and reactions of N-heterocyclic carbene boranes

Boranes are widely used Lewis acids and N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are popular Lewis bases, so it is remarkable how little was known about their derived complexes until recently. NHC-boranes are typically readily accessible and many are so stable that they can be treated like organic compounds rather than complexes. They do not exhibit "borane chemistry", but instead are proving to have a rich chemistry of their own as reactants, as reagents, as initiators, and as catalysts. They have significant potential for use in organic synthesis and in polymer chemistry. They can be used to easily make unusual complexes with a broad spectrum of functional groups not usually seen in organoboron chemistry. Many of their reactions occur through new classes of reactive intermediates including borenium cations, boryl radicals, and even boryl anions. This Review provides comprehensive coverage of the synthesis, characterization, and reactions of NHC-boranes.
