Abstract
We compared the dynamic instability of 25 dysplastic hips in 25 patients using triaxial accelerometry before and one year after periacetabular osteotomy. We also evaluated the hips clinically using the Harris hip score and assessed acetabular orientation by radiography before surgery and after one year. The mean overall magnitude of acceleration was significantly reduced from 2.30 m/s(2) (sd 0.57) before operation to 1.55 m/s(2) (sd 0.31) afterwards. The mean Harris hip score improved from 78.08 (47 to 96) to 95.36 points (88 to 100). The radiographic parameters all showed significant improvements. This study suggests that periacetabular osteotomy provides pain relief, improves acetabular cover and reduces the dynamic instability in patients with dysplastic hips.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Protein S may exert an anticoagulant activity by enhancing the anticoagulant activity of activated protein C and/or by directly inhibiting the prothrombinase complex. Protein S itself may also directly regulate inflammatory responses and apoptosis. The role of protein S in acute lung injury (ALI) was unknown. This study evaluated the effect of protein S on ALI in the mouse. METHODS Animal ALI was induced in C57/BL6 mice by intratracheal instillation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Mice were treated with protein S or saline by intraperitoneal injection 1 h before LPS instillation. RESULTS Activated protein or protein S alone and combined activated protein C + protein S therapy decreased inflammatory markers and cytokines in mice with acute lung injury. In LPS-treated mice compared with controls ALI was induced as shown by significantly increased levels of total protein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Mice with ALI treated with protein S had significantly decreased concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6 in the lung compared with untreated animals. Thrombin-antithrombin III, a marker of the activity of the coagulation cascade, was unchanged. Protein S inhibited the expression of cytokines in vitro and increased activation of the Axl tyrosine kinase pathway in A549 epithelial cells. CONCLUSION Protein S protects against LPS-induced ALI, possibly by directly inhibiting the local expression of inflammatory cytokines without affecting coagulation.

Abstract
Formation processes of beta-FeSi(2) from amorphous Fe-Si layers have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Si(111) substrates were irradiated with 120 keV Fe ions at -150 degrees C to fluences of 1.0 x 10(17) and 4.0 x 10(17) cm(-2). An amorphous Fe-Si layer embedded in an amorphous Si was formed in the low-fluence sample, whereas an amorphous Fe-Si surface layer on an amorphous Si was obtained in the high-fluence one. The amorphous Fe-Si layers were crystallized to beta-FeSi(2) after thermal annealing at 800 degrees C for 2 h. Cross-sectional and plan-view TEM observations revealed that, prior to the formation of beta-FeSi(2), the amorphous Fe-Si layers crystallized to alpha-FeSi(2) in the low-fluence sample and to epsilon-FeSi in the high-fluence one. The absence of metastable gamma-FeSi(2) which is considered as a precursor of epitaxially grown beta-FeSi(2) on Si was attributed to the instability of gamma-phase in an amorphous matrix.

Abstract
Infarction in the genu of the internal capsule causes dementia that is characterized by abulia, lethargy and memory loss without obvious motor palsy (capsular genu syndrome). We found infarction or decreased cerebral blood flow in the genu of the internal capsule in 6 of 13 patients with severe bacterial meningitis. Four of these six patients developed post-meningitis dementia, characterized by abulia, lethargy, and memory loss. Of 24 patients with viral meningitis, none developed capsular genu ischemia or post-meningitis dementia. In patients with severe bacterial meningitis, capsular genu ischemia may play some role in the development of post-meningitis dementia. In patients with viral meningitis, absence of such ischemia may explain, at least in a part, the rarity of post-meningitis dementia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To perform genetic analysis of influenza A and B viruses in Myanmar from 2005 to 2007 and to determine the prevalence of amantadine-resistant influenza A viruses. METHODS Phylogenies of the HA and NA genes were analyzed and mutations in M2 that confer resistance to amantadine were screened. RESULTS Influenza in Myanmar exhibited seasonality, which coincided during the rainy season from June to August. Out of 2,618 samples, 76 influenza A and 132 influenza B viruses were isolated. Phylogenetic analysis showed that in 2005, 11 A/H1N1 isolates formed one cluster with A/Solomon Islands/3/2006 and were amantadine-sensitive strains. One A/H3N2 isolate was amantadine-resistant harboring S31N mutation in M2 and possessing S193F and D225N substitutions in HA (clade N), similar to A/Wisconsin/67/2005. No viruses were isolated in 2006 due to sample storage failure. In 2007, all 64 A/H3N2 isolates were amantadine-resistant and similar to A/Brisbane/10/2007. For influenza B, 3 Yamagata-lineage and 17 Victoria-lineage isolates were detected in 2005 and 112 Victoria-lineage viruses were isolated in 2007. All Victoria-lineage isolates were reassortants possessing NA derived from the Yamagata lineage. CONCLUSION Continuous surveillance in tropical countries is important for elucidating the seasonality of influenza and determining the molecular characteristics of circulating strains.

Abstract
Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4alpha (HNF4alpha) isoforms in the human stomach have not been fully investigated. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the expression of P1 and P2 promoter-driven HNF4alpha (P1 and P2-HNF4alpha) in differentiated-type early gastric carcinomas (DEGC). P1- and P2-HNF4alpha expression was examined immunohistochemically both in non-neoplastic mucosa and carcinoma from surgical specimens. In all samples of non-neoplastic mucosa, foveolar, cardiac, fundic and pyloric gland epithelium was negative for P1-HNF4alpha, but was positive for P2-HNF4alpha. Intestinal metaplasia was positive for P1 and P2-HNF4alpha in all cases. Gastric carcinomas were classified into four mucin phenotypes based on the pattern of mucin expression: gastric, intestinal, mixed and null type. DEGC showed striking differences in the staining pattern for P1-HNF4alpha according to the mucin phenotype. Gastric carcinomas of intestinal, mixed and null type showed high positivity for P1-HNF4alpha, but the gastric type was negative for P1-HNF4alpha in all but one tumor. In contrast, P2-HNF4alpha was expressed in all tumors regardless of the mucin phenotype. Negative expression of P1-HNF4alpha was indicated as one of the useful immunohistochemical markers in the classification of mucin phenotype of both non-neoplastic mucosa and cancers of gastric phenotype.

Abstract
This review aims to give an update of the field of the hepatic sinusoid, supported by references to presentations given at the 14th International Symposium on Cells of the Hepatic Sinusoid (ISCHS2008), which was held in Tromsø, Norway, August 31-September 4, 2008. The subtitle of the symposium, 'Integrating basic and clinical hepatology', signified the inclusion of both basal and applied clinical results of importance in the field of liver sinusoidal physiology and pathophysiology. Of nearly 50 oral presentations, nine were invited tutorial lectures. The authors of the review have avoided writing a 'flat summary' of the presentations given at ISCHS2008, and instead focused on important novel information. The tutorial presentations have served as a particularly important basis in the preparation of this update. In this review, we have also included references to recent literature that may not have been covered by the ISCHS2008 programme. The sections of this review reflect the scientific programme of the symposium (http://www.ub.uit.no/munin/bitstream/10037/1654/1/book.pdf): 1. Liver sinusoidal endothelial cells. 2. Kupffer cells. 3. Abstract
A 4-year-old girl with a congenital choledochal cyst (Todani IV-A, Komi type A) underwent a resection of the dilated common bile duct and gallbladder. Histologic studies of the gallbladder showed a general hyperplastic change associated with cribriform proliferation at the gland base of the gallbladder. In this region, clusters of cribriform glands were found within the lymphatic vessels, compatible with lymphatic infiltration of tumor cells. However, careful histologic studies did not reveal any apparent neoplastic changes in the gallbladder and common bile duct, so a final diagnosis of epithelial atypism with reactive hypertrophy was made. The displacements observed in the lymphatics are just an incidental finding in a proliferative process of the hyperplastic gallbladder epithelium. In the follow-up observation for 3 years, the patient is doing well without evidence of tumor recurrence. These results suggest that a mere lymphatic infiltration of hyperplastic gallbladder epithelium should not be directly considered as evidence of carcinogenesis.

Abstract
In this study, interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), and haemoglobin levels were evaluated to compare the degree of surgical invasion between mini and standard incisions in total hip arthroplasty (THA). Sixty-two patients admitted for primary cementless THA were enrolled in this randomised study. The patients were allocated to have surgery through either a mini incision of <10 cm or a standard incision of 15 cm. In each group, inflammatory responses were evaluated by IL-6, CRP, and haemoglobin levels before operation and one day after operation. Significant differences were not found in IL-6, CRP, and haemoglobin levels between both groups. At six months after surgery, there were no significant differences in postoperative Harris hip scores or radiographic evaluations between both groups. In conclusion, a 5.0 cm difference in the skin incision to the hip joint seemed to have no influence on the degree of surgical invasion during THA.

Abstract
Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4 alpha) is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily and is expressed in several endodermal tissues. The aim of the present study was to examine the expression of HNF4 alpha on ovarian epithelial tumors with immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry using mAbs recognizing P1 and P2 promoter-driven HNF4 alpha. Ovarian mucinous adenoma, mucinous tumors of borderline malignancy, and mucinous adenocarcinoma had positive nuclear staining for HNF4 alpha (41/45, 91%). One-third (34%) of mucinous tumors had P1-positive staining and most had P1/P2-positive staining (93%). MUC2- and MUC5AC-positive staining was observed in 34% and 95% of mucinous tumors, respectively. The histological subtype of these mucinous tumors was not correlated with HNF4 alpha expression. On cytology it was found that cancer cells in the ascites from ovarian mucinous adenocarcinomas were HNF4 alpha positive, but tumor cells in ascites from other types of ovarian carcinomas were negative for HNF4 alpha. Thus, HNF4 alpha is demonstrated to be a useful marker for histological and cytological diagnosis of ovarian mucinous tumors.

Abstract
By use of monoclonal antibody against a Marek's disease virus (MDV) serotype 1-specific phosphorylated protein, MDV antigen-positive cells were demonstrated in tumour lesions of various visceral organs of chickens with Marek's disease. However, these tumour lesions did not appear to have the MDV glycoproteins gA and gB, which are considered to be late gene products of the virus genome gA and gB as well as the phosphorylated protein were detected in the feather follicle epithelium, which is a permissive site for MDV replication.

In this study, we attempted to identify cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)-directed Lck-derived peptides applicable to HLA-A11+, -A31+, or -A33+ cancer patients, because these HLA-A alleles share binding motifs, designated HLA-A3 supertype alleles, and because the Lck is preferentially expressed in metastatic cancer. Twenty-one Lck-derived peptides were prepared based on the binding motif to the HLA-A3 supertype alleles. They were first screened for their recognisability by immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the plasma of prostate cancer patients, and the selected candidates were subsequently tested for their potential to induce peptide-specific CTLs from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of HLA-A3 supertype+ cancer patients. As a result, four Lck peptides were frequently recognised by IgGs, and three of them – Lck90−99, Lck449−458, and Lck450−458 – efficiently induced peptide-specific and cancer-reactive CTLs. Their cytotoxicity towards cancer cells was mainly ascribed to HLA class I-restricted and peptide-specific CD8+ T cells. These results indicate that these three Lck peptides are applicable to HLA-A3 supertype+ cancer patients, especially those with metastasis. This information could facilitate the development of peptide-based anti-cancer vaccine for patients with alleles other than HLA-A2 and -A24.

Abstract
The ALY (aly/aly) mouse, a mutant of the C57BL/6j strain, has a severe immunodeficiency because of immature development of the immune organs. Both lymph nodes and Peyer's patches are lacking and both the thymus and spleen are small. Previous microscopical observation of their thymus glands revealed the presence of an indistinct border between the cortex and medulla, the absence of Hassal's corpuscles and the reduction of the medullary epithelial cell population. However, other microscopical findings for these glands have not yet been reported. In the present study, we performed light and electron microscopical observation of the thymus and found the consistent presence of extremely irregular shaped cystic cavities lined by microvilli-bearing epithelium in the medulla. The cysts comprised ceca and did not open into adjacent capillaries, although they contained some lymphocytes and macrophages in their lumens. In the thymus glands of normal C57BL/6j mice, only some small cysts oval in shape could be inconspicuously found in the medulla. Therefore, the thymic cysts may normally regress during thymic development, however, in ALY mice, the cysts may remain because of the organ immaturity.
