Experimental and theoretical studies on the conjugation of the phosphorus-carbon double bond with a cyclopropyl group

X-ray structural analysis for (Z)-2-cyclopropyl-1-(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-1-phosphaethene (2) was performed to confirm that the cyclopropyl group largely interacts with the P[double bond]C group compared with its carbon analogue, vinylcyclopropane (1). Absorption spectrum and redox properties of 2 were also studied to prove the conjugation. Theoretical investigation for nonsubstituted derivatives (4) indicated conjugative interaction between the P[double bond]C and cyclopropyl groups and revealed the physicochemical similarities between the P=C and C[double bond]C.

Preparation, structure, and reaction of a sterically encumbered 1-phosphaallene containing a cyclopropylidene moiety

[reaction: see text] Sterically protected (Z)-1-(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-2,5-dibromo-1-phosphapent-1-ene was allowed to react with potassium tert-butoxide to afford a cyclopropylidenephosphaethene, which was characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray crystallography. Construction of the cycloalkyl groups and isomerization of 1-phosphapenta-1,2,4-trienes to cyclopropylidenephosphaethenes are also described.

Preparation, structure, and some coordination properties of 2-chloro-3,3-diphenyl-3-thioxo-1-(2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl)-1,3-diphosphapropene

A sterically encumbered 3-thioxo-1,3-diphosphapropene, bearing a P=C-P=S skeleton, was prepared, characterised, and allowed to react with a carbonyltungsten(0) reagent and iodine affording the corresponding chelate tungsten(0) complex and charge-transfer complex with iodine, respectively, which were analysed by the X-ray crystallography.

Preparation, structure and coordination properties of 3,3-bis(diisopropylamino)-3-thioxo-1-(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3-diphosphapropene

(Z)-1-Chloro-2-(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-2-phosphaethenyllithium was allowed to react with bis(diisopropylamino)-phosphenium triflate to afford the corresponding 1,3-diphosphapropene which was converted to 3-thioxo-1,3-diphosphapropene [(Z)-Mes*P = C(Cl)-P(= S)(NiPr2)2]. The coordination properties of 3-thioxo-1,3'-diphosphapropene were investigated with carbonyltungsten(0) and dichloroplatinum(II) reagents, and the molecular structure of the chelate dichloroplatinum(II) complex was unambiguously determined by X-ray crystallography together with the free ligand. The dichloroplatinum(II) complex underwent intramolecular cyclisation involving C-H activation to give a 5,7-di-tert-butyl-3,3-dimethyl-l-(phosphinomethyl)-1-phosphaindane derivative as well.

Development of a new sterically protecting auxiliary of the metacyclophane type and application to unsymmetrical diphosphenes, 1,3-diphosphaallene and 1,4-diphosphabutatriene

A new bulky bromobenzene of the metacyclophane type was converted to an unsymmetrically substituted 1,4-diphos-phabutatriene whose spin-spin coupling constant (3Jpp) turned out to be larger, for the first time, than the 2Jpp value of the corresponding 1,3-diphosphaallene.

Synthesis, structure, and redox properties of the extremely crowded triarylpnictogens: tris(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)phosphine, arsine, stibine, and bismuthine

A series of the extremely crowded triarylpnitogens, tris(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)phosphine (1), arsine (2), stibine (3), and bismuthine (4), were synthesized by the reaction of 2,4,6-triisopropylphenylcopper(I) with the corresponding pnictogen trichlorides. Introduction [corrected] of the three bulky aryl groups resulted in the unusual structures and redox properties, which were studied by X-ray crystallography and cyclic voltammetry. The triarylpnictogens 1, 2, and 3 had extremely large bond angles around pnictogen atoms (1: 111.5 degrees , 2: 109.2 degrees , 3: 106.7 degrees ), and not only 1 and 2, but also stibine 3 displayed a reversible redox wave in the cyclic voltammograms at very low potentials (1: 0.16 V, 2: 0.50 V, 3: 0.57 V vs Ag/Ag+), which suggests considerable stability of the corresponding cation radicals.

(Pi-allyl)palladium complexes bearing diphosphinidenecyclobutene ligands (DPCB): highly active catalysts for direct conversion of allylic alcohols

The (pi-allyl)palladium complex bearing an sp2-hybridized phosphorus ligand (DPCB-OMe: 1,2-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-3,4-bis[(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)phosphinidene]cyclobutene) efficiently catalyzes direct conversion of allylic alcohols in the absence of activating agents of alcohols such as Lewis acids. N-Allylation of aniline proceeds at room temperature to afford monoallylated anilines in 90-97% yields. C-Allylation of active methylene compounds is also successful at 50 degrees C using a catalytic amount of pyridine as a base, giving monoallylation products in 85-95% yields. The catalytic mechanism involving hydrido- and (pi-allyl)palladium intermediates has been proposed on the basis of stoichiometric examinations using model compounds of presumed intermediates.

Preparation of 2,4-bis(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3-diphosphacyclobutenes from 2-(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-1-phosphaethyne and alkyllithiums

2-(2,4,6-Tri-tert-butylphenyl)-1-phosphaethyne was allowed to react with 0.5 eq. of alkyllithium to afford 2,4-bis(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3-diphosphacyclobutenes through an intramolecular cyclisation of a 1,3-diphosphabuta-1,3-diene intermediate.
