Low-loss silicon-on-insulator shallow-ridge TE and TM waveguides formed using thermal oxidation

A thermal oxidation fabrication technique is employed to form low-loss high-index-contrast silicon shallow-ridge waveguides in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) with maximally tight vertical confinement. Drop-port responses from weakly coupled ring resonators demonstrate propagation losses below 0.36 dB/cm for TE modes. This technique is also combined with "magic width" designs mitigating severe lateral radiation leakage for TM modes to achieve propagation loss values of 0.94 dB/cm. We discuss the fabrication process utilized to form these low-loss waveguides and implications for sensor devices in particular.

Variations in normal color vision. V. Simulations of adaptation to natural color environments

Modern accounts of color appearance differ in whether they assume that the perceptual primaries (e.g., white and the unique hues of red, green, blue, and yellow) correspond to unique states determined by the spectral sensitivities of the observer or by the spectral statistics of the environment. We examined the interaction between observers and their environments by asking how color perception should vary if appearance depends on fixed responses in a set of color channels, when the sensitivities of these channels are adapted in plausible ways to different environments. Adaptation was modeled as gain changes in the cones and in multiple postreceptoral channels tuned to different directions in color-luminance space. Gains were adjusted so that the average channel responses were equated across two environments or for the same environment during different seasons, based on sets of natural outdoor scenes (Webster et al., 2007). Because of adaptation, even observers with a shared underlying physiology should perceive color in significantly and systematically different ways when they are exposed to and thus adapted by different contexts. These include differences in achromatic settings (owing to variations in the average chromaticity of locations) and differences in perceived hue (because of differences in scene contrasts). Modeling these changes provides a way of simulating how colors might be experienced by individuals in different color environments and provides a measure of how much color appearance might be modulated for a given observer by variations in the environment.

Adaptation and perceptual norms in color vision

Many perceptual dimensions are thought to be represented relative to an average value or norm. Models of norm-based coding assume that the norm appears psychologically neutral because it reflects a neutral response in the underlying neural code. We tested this assumption in human color vision by asking how judgments of "white" are affected as neural responses are altered by adaptation. The adapting color was varied to determine the stimulus level that did not bias the observer's subjective white point. This level represents a response norm at the stages at which sensitivity is regulated by the adaptation, and we show that these response norms correspond to the perceptually neutral stimulus and that they can account for how the perception of white varies both across different observers and within the same observer at different locations in the visual field. We also show that individual differences in perceived white are reduced when observers are exposed to a common white adapting stimulus, suggesting that the perceptual differences are due in part to differences in how neural responses are normalized. These results suggest a close link between the norms for appearance and coding in color vision and illustrate a general paradigm for exploring this link in other perceptual domains.

Visual adaptation: neural, psychological and computational aspects

The term 'visual adaptation' describes the processes by which the visual system alters its operating properties in response to changes in the environment. These continual adjustments in sensory processing are diagnostic as to the computational principles underlying the neural coding of information and can have profound consequences for our perceptual experience. New physiological and psychophysical data, along with emerging statistical and computational models, make this an opportune time to bring together experimental and theoretical perspectives. Here, we discuss functional ideas about adaptation in the light of recent data and identify exciting directions for future research.

Seasonal variations in the color statistics of natural images

We examined how the distribution of colors in natural images varies as the seasons change. Images of natural outdoor scenes were acquired at locations in the Western Ghats, India, during monsoon and winter seasons and in the Sierra Nevada, USA, from spring to fall. The images were recorded with an RGB digital camera calibrated to yield estimates of the L, M, and S cone excitations and chromatic and luminance contrasts at each pixel. These were compared across time and location and were analyzed separately for regions of earth and sky. Seasonal climate changes alter both the average color in scenes and how the colors are distributed around the average. Arid periods are marked by a mean shift toward the +L pole of the L vs. M chromatic axis and a rotation in the color distributions away from the S vs. LM chromatic axis and toward an axis of bluish-yellowish variation, both primarily due to changes in vegetation. The form of the change was similar at the two locations suggesting that the color statistics of natural images undergo a characteristic pattern of temporal variation. We consider the implications of these changes for models of both visual sensitivity and color appearance.

Aging and blur adaptation

Color appearance remains remarkably stable in the aging visual system despite large changes in the spectral distribution of the retinal stimulus and losses in chromatic sensitivity (P. B. Delahunt, J. L. Hardy, K. Okajima, & J. S. Werner, 2005; J. S. Werner, 1996). This stability could reflect adaptive adjustments in peripheral or central chromatic mechanisms that compensate for sensitivity losses in senescence. We asked whether similar compensatory adjustments play a role in maintaining spatial vision--and whether the adaptation itself shows changes with aging-by examining the effects of adaptation on judgments of image focus. Perceptual aftereffects following adaptation to a uniform field and blurred or sharpened images were compared between younger adults and older observers. Subjects adapted to a sequence of blurred or sharpened images for 120 s, and a two-alternative forced-choice staircase task was used to vary the filter exponent of the test to define the subjective point of best focus. There was a small but significant difference between younger and older observers in the level perceived as best focused in all three adaptation conditions, possibly reflecting differences in the ambient blur level the groups are routinely exposed to. However, the magnitude of the blur aftereffect did not differ between the two age groups. These results suggest that although there may be small differences in the long-term adaptation to blur, younger and older observers do not differ in the strength of adaptation to transient changes in blur. The neural processes mediating adaptation to blur thus appear to remain largely intact with aging.

Nonlinearities in color coding: compensating color appearance for the eye's spectral sensitivity

Most wavelengths change hue when mixed with white light. These changes, known as the Abney effect, have been extensively studied to characterize nonlinearities in the neural coding of color, but their potential function remains obscure. We measured the Abney effect in a new way--by varying the bandwidth of the spectrum rather than mixing with white--and this leads to a new interpretation of the role of nonlinear responses in color appearance. Because of the eye's limited spectral sensitivity, increasing the bandwidth of a spectrum changes the relative responses in the three classes of cone receptor and thus would change hue if the percept were tied to a fixed cone ratio. However, we found that hue is largely independent of bandwidth and thus constant for a constant peak wavelength for stimuli with Gaussian spectra. This suggests that color appearance is compensated for the eye's spectral filtering, and that this compensation embodies specific perceptual inferences about how natural spectra vary. When a wavelength is instead diluted with white light--which does not bias the cone ratios--then the same compensation predicts changes in hue because the "right" response is made to the "wrong" stimulus. This model generates constant hue loci that are qualitatively consistent with measures of the Abney effect and provides a novel functional account of such effects in color appearance, in which postreceptoral responses are adjusted so that constant hue percepts are tied to consistent physical properties of the environment rather than consistent physiological properties such as the cone ratios.

Neural adjustments to chromatic blur

The perception of blur in images can be strongly affected by prior adaptation to blurry images or by spatial induction from blurred surrounds. These contextual effects may play a role in calibrating visual responses for the spatial structure of luminance variations in images. We asked whether similar adjustments might also calibrate the visual system for spatial variations in color. Observers adjusted the amplitude spectra of luminance or chromatic images until they appeared correctly focused, and repeated these measurements either before or after adaptation to blurred or sharpened images or in the presence of blurred or sharpened surrounds. Prior adaptation induced large and distinct changes in perceived focus for both luminance and chromatic patterns, suggesting that luminance and chromatic mechanisms are both able to adjust to changes in the level of blur. However, judgments of focus were more variable for color, and unlike luminance there was little effect of surrounding spatial context on perceived blur. In additional measurements we explored the effects of adaptation on threshold contrast sensitivity for luminance and color. Adaptation to filtered noise with a 1/f spectrum characteristic of natural images strongly and selectively elevated thresholds at low spatial frequencies for both luminance and color, thus transforming the chromatic contrast sensitivity function from lowpass to nearly bandpass. These threshold changes were found to reflect interactions between different spatial scales that bias sensitivity against the lowest spatial grain in the image, and may reflect adaptation to different stimulus attributes than the attributes underlying judgments of image focus. Our results suggest that spatial sensitivity for variations in color can be strongly shaped by adaptation to the spatial structure of the stimulus, but point to dissociations in these visual adjustments both between luminance and color and different measures of spatial sensitivity.

Stimulus selectivity of figural aftereffects for faces

Viewing a distorted face induces large aftereffects in the appearance of an undistorted face. The authors examined the processes underlying this adaptation by comparing how selective the aftereffects are for different dimensions of the images including size, spatial frequency content, contrast, and color. Face aftereffects had weaker selectivity for changes in the size, contrast, or color of the images and stronger selectivity for changes in contrast polarity or spatial frequency. This pattern could arise if the adaptation is contingent on the perceived similarity of the stimuli as faces. Consistent with this, changing contrast polarity or spatial frequency had larger effects on the perceived identity of a face, and aftereffects were also selective for different individual faces. These results suggest that part of the sensitivity changes underlying the adaptation may arise at visual levels closely associated with the representation of faces.

Variations in normal color vision. IV. Binary hues and hue scaling

We used hue cancellation and focal naming to compare individual differences in stimuli selected for unique hues (e.g., pure blue or green) and binary hues (e.g., blue-green). Standard models assume that binary hues depend on the component responses of red-green and blue-yellow processes. However, variance was comparable for unique and binary hues, and settings across categories showed little correlation. Thus, the choices for the binary mixtures are poorly predicted by the unique hue settings. Hue scaling was used to compare individual differences both within and between categories. Ratings for distant stimuli were again independent, while neighboring stimuli covaried and revealed clusters near the poles of the LvsM and SvsLM cardinal axes. While individual differences were large, mean focal choices for red, blue-green, yellow-green, and (to a lesser extent) purple fall near the cardinal axes, such that the cardinal axes roughly delineate the boundaries for blue vs. green and yellow vs. green categories. This suggests a weak tie between the cone-opponent axes and the structure of color appearance.

Visual adjustments to temporal blur

After observers have adapted to an edge that is spatially blurred or sharpened, a focused edge appears too sharp or blurred, respectively. These adjustments to blur may play an important role in calibrating spatial sensitivity. We examined whether similar adjustments influence the perception of temporal edges, by measuring the appearance of a step change in the luminance of a uniform field after adapting to blurred or sharpened transitions. Stimuli were square-wave alternations (at 1 to 8 Hz) filtered by changing the slope of the amplitude spectrum. A two-alternative-forced-choice task was used to adjust the slope until it appeared as a step change, or until it matched the perceived transitions in a reference stimulus. Observers could accurately set the waveform to a square wave, but only at the slower alternation rates. However, these settings were strongly biased by prior adaptation to filtered stimuli, or when the stimuli were viewed within temporally filtered surrounds. Control experiments suggest that the latter induction effects result directly from the temporal blur and are not simply a consequence of brightness induction in the fields. These results suggest that adaptation and induction adjust visual coding so that images are focused not only in space but also in time.

Modeling a tethered polymer in Poiseuille flow

We investigate the behavior of a tethered polymer in Poiseuille flow using a multiscale algorithm. The polymer, treated using molecular dynamics, is coupled to a solvent modeled by the stochastic rotation algorithm, a particle-based Navier-Stokes integrator. The expected series of morphological transitions of the polymer: sphere to distorted sphere to trumpet to stem and flower to rod are recovered, and we discuss how the polymer extension depends on the flow velocity. Backflow effects cause an effective increase in viscosity, which appears to be primarily due to the fluctuations of the free end of the polymer.

Chromatic and contrast selectivity in color contrast adaptation

We used color contrast adaptation to examine the chromatic and contrast selectivity of central color mechanisms. Adaptation to a field whose color varies along a single axis of color space induces a selective loss in sensitivity to the adapting axis. The resulting changes in color appearance are consistent with mechanisms formed by different linear combinations of the cone signals. We asked whether the visual system could also adjust to higher-order variations in the adapting stimulus, by adapting observers to interleaved variations along both the L versus M and the S versus LM cardinal axes. The perceived hue of test stimuli was then measured with an asymmetric matching task. Frequency analysis of the hue shifts revealed weak but systematic hue rotations away from each cardinal axis and toward the diagonal intermediate axes. Such shifts could arise if the adapted channels include mechanisms with narrow chromatic selectivity, as some physiological recordings suggest, but could also reflect how adaptation alters the contrast response function. In either case they imply the presence of more than two mechanisms within the chromatic plane. In a second set of measurements, we adapted to either the L versus M or the S versus LM axis alone and tested whether the changes in hue could be accounted for by changes in relative contrast along the two axes. For high contrasts the hue biases are larger than the contrast changes predict. This dissociation implies that the contrast and hue changes are not carried by a common underlying signal, and could arise if the contrast along a single color direction is encoded by more than one mechanism with different contrast sensitivities or if different subsets of channels encode contrast and hue. Such variations in contrast sensitivity are also consistent with physiological recordings of cortical neurons.

Long-term renormalization of chromatic mechanisms following cataract surgery

The optical density of the human crystalline lens progressively increases with age, the greatest increase in the visible spectrum being at short wavelengths. This produces a gradual shift in the spectral distribution of the light reaching the retina, yet color appearance remains relatively stable across the life span, implying that the visual system adapts to compensate for changes in spectral sensitivity. We explored properties of this adaptive renormalization by measuring changes in color appearance following cataract surgery. When the lens is removed, cataract patients often report a large perceptual shift in color appearance that can last for months. This change in color appearance was quantified for four cataract patients (63-84 years) by determining the chromaticity of stimuli that appeared achromatic before surgery, and at various intervals after surgery for up to 1 year. Stimuli were presented on a calibrated CRT as 9.5-deg spots, with 3-s duration and 3-s interstimulus intervals (ISIs). Chromaticity was adjusted by the subjects in CIE L*a*b* color space with luminance fixed at 32 cd/m2, on a dark background. We also estimated the optical density of the cataractous lens by comparing absolute scotopic thresholds from 410 nm to 600 nm before and after surgery. The results demonstrated that immediately following surgery there is a large increase in the short-wave light reaching the retina, mainly below 500 nm. The achromatic settings generally showed an initial large shift in the "yellow" direction after surgery that gradually (but never fully) returned to the original achromatic point before surgery. The shifts in the achromatic point occur over a number of months and appear to occur independently of the fellow eye.

Characterization of a novel form of X-linked incomplete achromatopsia

X-linked incomplete achromatopsia (XIA), also called blue-cone monochromacy (BCM), is a rare cone disorder that most commonly results either from one of two conditions. The first condition is a deletion of the locus control region (LCR) which is a critical DNA element that lies upstream of the L and M photopigment gene array on the X-chromosome and is necessary for expression of the photopigment genes. The second condition is an inactivating point mutation within the coding sequence of the remaining photopigment gene in an array from which all but one gene has been deleted. Many previous studies have concluded that affected individuals either have only rods and S-cones (Blackwell & Blackwell, 1957, 1961; Daw & Enoch, 1973; Hess et al., 1989) or have rods, S-cones, and another cone type that contains the rod pigment (Pokorny et al., 1970; Alpern et al., 1971). However, Smith et al. (1983) described individuals with XIA who had residual L-cone function. Here we report results for a subject with XIA who appears to have residual M-cone function. Genetic analysis revealed that he had apparently normal genes for M-cone photopigment thus leaving open the possibility that he has a contribution to vision based on expression of these genes at a very low level.

Spectral and temporal speckle field measurements of a random medium

The zero-mean circular complex Gaussian field statistics of a random medium are experimentally demonstrated in the optical domain, thus verifying this key assumption of statistical optics. Using a frequency-tunable laser source in a fixed-path-length interferometer, we obtain optical field fluctuations in the time and frequency domains that clearly show that the ensemble-averaged temporal intensity converges to the photon transit time distribution, which for the samples used is in excellent agreement with a diffusion model.

Adaptation to natural facial categories

Face perception is fundamentally important for judging the characteristics of individuals, such as identification of their gender, age, ethnicity or expression. We asked how the perception of these characteristics is influenced by the set of faces that observers are exposed to. Previous studies have shown that the appearance of a face can be biased strongly after viewing an altered image of the face, and have suggested that these after-effects reflect response changes in the neural mechanisms underlying object or face perception. Here we show that these adaptation effects are pronounced for natural variations in faces and for natural categorical judgements about faces. This suggests that adaptation may routinely influence face perception in normal viewing, and could have an important role in calibrating properties of face perception according to the subset of faces populating an individual's environment.

Color contrast and contextual influences on color appearance

We used a hue-scaling task to examine changes in color perception resulting from adaptation or induction to color contrast in spatially-varying backgrounds. Observers judged the perceived color of tests after or while viewing backgrounds composed of color differences along selected axes in color space. Both contrast adaptation and contrast induction produced large and selective shifts in perceived hue angle, and interacted in similar ways when combined, suggesting that they had functionally similar influences on perceived hue. Both also consistently biased perceived hue away from the color axis of the background, implying response changes within multiple channels tuned to different directions in color space. Selective hue changes were also observed when the gamut of colors forming the backgrounds were drawn from natural color distributions. This suggests that color perception in different environments may be systematically biased by adaptation to the distributions of colors in those environments. However, we did not find these biases when the same test stimuli were judged after adapting to actual natural scenes.

Variations in normal color vision. III. Unique hues in Indian and United States observers

Basic color categories are thought to share a common pattern across linguistic groups, yet the focal colors defining those categories can vary substantially within any single group. We asked whether focal colors can also differ systematically across different groups of individuals living in potentially different color environments, by measuring focal and unique hues for observers in India and the United States. Differences between groups were generally small relative to the within-group variations, consistent with a strong common basis for color naming across diverse contexts. However, for most hues the average settings differed significantly across subpopulations. These differences persisted across testing conditions and thus probably reflect longer-term contextual influences on color appearance judgments. They suggest that while color categories may be qualitatively similar, precisely how the hue spectrum is parsed may differ quantitatively across different populations of observers. Both the between-group and the within-group differences are inconsistent with the differences predicted by common peripheral sources of variation in color vision (e.g., in lens or macular pigment) and may reflect an influence of environmental or cultural differences in focal color choices.

Neural adjustments to image blur

Blur is an intrinsic feature of retinal images that varies widely across images and observers, yet the world still typically appears 'in focus'. Here we examine the putative role of neural adaptation in the human perception of image focus by measuring how blur judgments depended on the state of adaptation. Exposure to unfocused images has previously been shown to influence acuity and contrast sensitivity, and here we show that adaptation can also profoundly affect the actual perception of image focus.

Temporal response of a random medium from third-order laser speckle frequency correlations

We demonstrate for the first time that the temporal response of a random medium can be obtained from optical intensity fluctuations. Our method uses third-order intensity correlations of measured speckle patterns from a multiple scattering random medium as a function of optical frequency. In particular, our experimental results for the temporal response extracted from third-order intensity correlations are in good agreement with the predictions of a diffusion model. Our results are valid for waves in random media where the scattered field is described by circular complex Gaussian statistics.

Interactions between chromatic adaptation and contrast adaptation in color appearance

Color appearance depends on adaptation processes that adjust sensitivity both to the average color in the stimulus (through light or chromatic adaptation) and to the variations in color (through contrast adaptation). We explored how these different forms of adaptation interact, by examining how the state of chromatic adaptation depends on the time-varying color contrasts in the stimulus, and conversely, how adaptation to the mean determines the stimulus contrasts underlying contrast adaptation. Light adaptation levels remain very similar whether observers adapt to a static chromaticity or to large temporal modulations in cone excitation that vary at rates of 0.5 Hz or higher. This suggests that up to the sites of light adaptation, the response to moderate contrasts is effectively linear and that the adaptation effectively averages over several seconds of the stimulus. For slower flicker rates color is differentially biased by the last half-cycle of the flicker, and perceived contrast may be altered by response polarization. This polarization selectively saturates responses to moderate (but not low) contrasts along the color direction complementary to the mean color bias, implying that the response changes occur within multiple mechanisms tuned to different chromatic axes. Chromatic adaptation often adjusts only partially to the mean color of the stimulus, and thus leaves a residual bias in the color appearance of the field. Contrast adaptation reduces perceived contrast relative to this residual color, and not relative to the stimulus that appears achromatic. Similarly, contrast discrimination thresholds appear lower around the residual color than around the achromatic point. Thus under biased states of chromatic adaptation alternative measures of 'zero contrast' can be dissociated, suggesting that they do not depend on a common null point within the channels encoding chromatic contrast.

Variations in normal color vision. I. Cone-opponent axes

Early postreceptoral color vision is thought to be organized in terms of two principal axes corresponding to opposing L- and M-cone signals (LvsM) or to S-cone signals opposed by a combination of L- and M-cone signals (SvsLM). These cone-opponent axes are now widely used in studies of color vision, but in most cases the corresponding stimulus variations are defined only theoretically, based on a standard observer. We examined the range and implications of interobserver variations in the cone-opponent axes. We used chromatic adaptation to empirically define the LvsM and SvsLM axes and used both thresholds and color contrast adaptation to determine sensitivity to the axes. We also examined the axis variations implied by individual differences in the color matching data of Stiles and Burch [Opt. Acta 6, 1 (1959)]. The axes estimated for individuals can differ measurably from the nominal standard-observer axes and can influence the interpretation of postreceptoral color organization (e.g., regarding interactions between the two axes). Thus, like luminance sensitivity, individual differences in chromatic sensitivity may be important to consider in studies of the cone-opponent axes.

Variations in normal color vision. II. Unique hues

We examined individual differences in the color appearance of nonspectral lights and asked how they might be related to individual differences in sensitivity to chromatic stimuli. Observers set unique hues for moderately saturated equiluminant stimuli by varying their hue angle within a plane defined by the LvsM and SvsLM cone-opponent axes that are thought to characterize early postreceptoral color coding. Unique red settings were close to the +L pole of the LvsM axis, while green, blue, and yellow settings clustered along directions intermediate to the LvsM and SvsLM axes and thus corresponded to particular ratios of LvsM to SvsLM activity. Interobserver differences in the unique hues were substantial. However, no relationship was found between hue settings and relative sensitivity to the LvsM and SvsLM axes. Moreover, interobserver variations in different unique hues were uncorrelated and were thus inconsistent with a common underlying factor such as relative sensitivity or changes in the spectral sensitivities of the cones. Thus for the moderately saturated lights we tested, the unique hues appear largely unconstrained by normal individual differences in the cone-opponent axes. In turn, this suggests that the perceived hue for these stimuli does not depend on fixed (common) physiological weightings of the cone-opponent axes or on fixed (common) color signals in the environment.

Color-luminance relationships and the McCollough effect

The McCollough effect is an orientation-specific color aftereffect induced by adapting to colored gratings. We examined how the McCollough effect depends on the relationships between color and luminance within the inducing and test gratings and compared the aftereffects to the color changes predicted from selective adaptation to different color-luminance combinations. Our results suggest that the important contingency underlying the McCollough effect is between orientation and color-luminance direction and are consistent with sensitivity changes within mechanisms tuned to specific color-luminance directions. Aftereffects are similar in magnitude for adapting color pairs that differ only in S cone excitation or L and M cone excitation, and they have a similar dependence on spatial frequency. In particular, orientation-specific aftereffects are induced for S cone colors even when the grating frequencies are above the S cone resolution limit. Thus, the McCollough effect persists even when different cone classes encode the orientation and color of the gratings.
