Abstract
Efficient oil separation is the most desirable, but still challenging solution for the waste crude oil problem. This study developed biosurfactant surfactin as a novel pH-switchable biodemulsifier for efficient oil separation. As found, surfactin demulsification achieved a quite well oil separation ratio of over 95% on model emulsions after 20 min at 50 °C. The validity of this demulsification process should be mainly based on the readily lost stabilization ability of surfactin in emulsions triggered by acid addition. Then, surfactin (0.2 g/L) treatment with the aid of ethanol (2%) to improve its distribution could recover over 95% of oil from waste crude oil. After treated by surfactin, the separated oil phase contains tiny water (less than 0.5%) and thus can be reused for resource recycling to reach a compromised balance between satisfying the strict environmental regulations and decreasing the high treatment costs. Hence, in consideration of high demulsification efficiency, environmental-friendly properties and cost-efficiency, surfactin has a great potential for industrial applications for oil recovery from waste crude oil which is a severe problem presents in most of the petroleum-related factories.

Yu Y, Xu Z, Chen S, Jin M. Microbial lipid production from dilute acid and dilute alkali pretreated corn stover via Trichosporon dermatis. BIORESOURCE TECHNOLOGY 2020; 295:122253. [PMID: 31630000 DOI: 10.1016/j.biortech.2019.122253] [Citation(s) in RCA: 25] [Impact Index Per Article: 6.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/02/2019] [Revised: 10/06/2019] [Accepted: 10/08/2019] [Indexed: 06/10/2023]
Abstract
Microbial lipid production from lignocellulosic biomass has attracted much attention recently. In this study, T. dermatis 32903 was selected from eleven promising oleaginous yeast strains. Carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) was investigated and optimized to maximize lipid production. Dilute acid (DA) pretreated corn stover (CS) and dilute alkali (AL) pretreated CS were then used for microbial lipid production, resulting in lipid concentrations of 7.46 g/L and 6.81 g/L, with sugar to lipid yields reached 0.104 g/g and 0.101 g/g, respectively. Washing of DA-CS and AL-CS enhanced lipid production to 11.43 g/L and 20.36 g/L with sugar to lipid yields improved to 0.156 g/g and 0.186 g/g, respectively. As degradation products in pretreated biomass showed severe inhibition on lipid fermentation, eight typical degradation products were further investigated for their effects on lipid fermentation. T. dermatis 32903 exhibited high tolerance to furan derivatives and week acids, but lower tolerance to phenolic compounds.

Measurement of ϒ(1S) Elliptic Flow at Forward Rapidity in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:192301. Abstract
The first measurement of the ϒ(1S) elliptic flow coefficient (v_{2}) is performed at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4) in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are obtained with the scalar product method and are reported as a function of transverse momentum (p_{T}) up to 15 GeV/c in the 5%-60% centrality interval. The measured ϒ(1S)v_{2} is consistent with 0 and with the small positive values predicted by transport models within uncertainties. The v_{2} coefficient in 2<p_{T}<15 GeV/c is lower than that of inclusive J/ψ mesons in the same p_{T} interval by 2.6 standard deviations. These results, combined with earlier suppression measurements, are in agreement with a scenario in which the ϒ(1S) production in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies is dominated by dissociation limited to the early stage of the collision, whereas in the J/ψ case there is substantial experimental evidence of an additional regeneration component.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of newly treated high-risk group neuroblastoma (NB) patients with bone marrow metastasis and to explore the prognostic factors. Methods: The clinical features (sex, age, stage, risk group, pathological type, metastatic site, etc.) of 203 newly treated high-risk NB patients with bone marrow metastasis admitted to Hematology Oncology Center, Beijing Children's Hospital from January 2007 to December 2016 were analyzed retrospectively. There were 118 males (58.1%) and 85 females (41.9%). Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis and Cox regression was used to analyze the prognostic factors. Results: The age at onset of the 203 patients was 41 months (9-147 months). The metastatic sites at diagnosis were as follows: bone in 195 cases (96.1%), distant lymph nodes in 104 cases (51.2%), skull and endomeninx in 61 cases (30.0%), orbit in 30 cases (14.8%), pleura in 16 cases (7.9%), liver in 13 cases(6.4%), canalis spinalis in 13 cases (6.4%), other sites in 11 cases (5.4%) and skin and soft tissue in 10 cases (4.9%). In all, 194 cases were enrolled for prognostic analysis. The follow-up time was 36 months (1 day-138 months) , and the 5-years event free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were 36.1% and 39.7%, respectively. A total of 118 patients (60.8%) had events (first relapse or death) with the time to event occurrence was 15 months (1 day-72 months), whereas 112 patients (57.7%) died with the event occurrence to death time was 3 months (1 day-21 months). There was no significant difference in 5-years OS between radiotherapy group and non-radiotherapy group (42.3% vs. 38.3%, χ(2)=3.671, P=0.055). The 5-years OS in transplantation group was significantly better than the non-transplantation group (44.3% vs. 35.5%, χ(2)=8.878, P=0.003), and the radiotherapy combined transplantation group also had a better 5-years OS rate than the non-radiotherapy combined transplantation group (45.8% vs. 37.3%, χ(2)=5.945, P=0.015). Univariate survival analysis showed lactate dehydrogenase ≥ 1 500 U/L, the amplification of MYCN, the metastatic sites of orbit, canalis spinalis and pleura were associated with poor prognosis of newly diagnosed high-risk NB patients (χ(2)=21.064, 13.601, 3.998, 6.183, 15.307, all P<0.05). The amplification of MYCN and the metastatic sites of pleura were risk factors for prognosis of newly diagnosed high-risk NB patients by Cox regression models (HR=1.896,1.100, 95%CI: 1.113-3.231, 1.020-1.187, both P<0.05). Conclusions: The prognosis is unfavorable in high-risk group NB patients with BM metastasis. Radiotherapy combined with transplantation can further improve the prognosis of these patients. The amplification of MYCN and the metastatic sites of pleura were the poor prognostic factors for high-risk NB patients with bone marrow metastasis.

Abstract
Objective: To summarize the clinical characteristics, treatment response and prognostic factors of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in children. Methods: The clinical characteristics such as age at diagnosis, primary tumor site, tumor size, pathological type, clinical stage, and risk grouping of 213 RMS patients (140 males and 73 females) treated in Hematology Oncology Center of Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University, from May 2006 to June 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. The clinical characteristics, overall survival (OS), event free survival (EFS) and prognostic factors of children treated with the Beijing Children's Hospital-Rhabdomyosarcoma (BCH-RMS) regimen were analyzed. Survival data were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and single factor analysis was performed by Log-Rank test. Results: The diagnostic age of 213 cases was 48.0 months (ranged 3.0-187.5 months), of which 136 cases (63.8%) were younger than 10 years old. The head and neck region was the most common primary site of tumor (30%, 64 cases), followed by the genitourinary tract (26.8%, 57 cases). Among pathological subtypes, embryonal RMS accounted for 71.4% (152 cases), while alveolar RMS and anaplastic RMS accounted for only 26.8% (57 cases) and 1.9% (4 cases), respectively. According to the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study Group (IRS), IRS-Ⅲ and Ⅳ accounted for 85.0% (181 cases) of all RMS patients. In all patients, 9.4% (20 cases) patients were divided in to low-risk group, 52.1% (111 cases) patients in to intermediate -risk group, 25.8% (55 cases) patients in to high-risk group, and 12.7% (27 cases) patients in to the central nervous system invasion group, respectively. All patients with RMS received chemotherapy. The cycles of chemotherapy were 13.5 (ranged 5.0-18.0) for patients without event occurrence, while 14.2 (ranged 3.0-30.0) for patients with event occurrence. Among the 213 patients, 200 patients had surgical operation, of whom 103 patients underwent surgery before chemotherapy and 97 patients at the end of chemotherapy, 21 patients had secondary surgical resection. Radiotherapy was performed in 114 patients. The follow-up time was 23.0 months (ranged 0.5-151.0 months) . There were 98 patients with relapsed or progressed disease and 67 patients with death. The median time to progression was 10 months, of which 67 (68.4%) relapse occurred within 1 year and no recurrence occurred after follow-up for more than 5 years. The 3-year EFS and 5-year EFS were (52±4) % and (48±4) %, while the 3-year OS and 5-year OS were (65±4) % and (64±4) % by survival analysis. The 5-year OS of the low-risk, intermediate-risk, the high-risk were 100%, (74±5) %, (48±8) %, and the 2-year OS of the central nervous system invasion group was (36±11) % (χ(2)=33.52, P<0.01). The 5-year EFS of the low-risk, intermediate-risk, the high-risk were (93±6) %, (51±5) %, (36±7) % and the 2-year EFS of the central nervous system invasion group was (31±10) % (χ(2)=24.73, P<0.01) . Survival factor analysis suggested that the OS of children was correlated with age(χ(2)=4.16, P=0.038), tumor TNM stage (χ(2)=22.02, P=0.001), IRS group (χ(2)=4.49, P<0.01) and the risk group (χ(2)=33.52, P<0.01). Conclusions: This study showed that the median age of newly diagnosed RMS patients was 4 years. The head and neck and the genitourinary tract were the most common primary origin of RMS. The OS was low in single-center RMS children. The median time to recurrence was 10 months, and recurrence was rare 3 years later.

The cysteine protease ApdS from Streptococcus suis promotes evasion of innate immune defenses by cleaving the antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin LL-37. J Biol Chem 2019; 294:17962-17977. Abstract
Streptococcus suis is a globally distributed zoonotic pathogen associated with meningitis and septicemia in humans, posing a serious threat to public health. To successfully invade and disseminate within its host, this bacterium must overcome the innate immune system. The antimicrobial peptide LL-37 impedes invading pathogens by directly perforating bacterial membranes and stimulating the immune function of neutrophils, which are the major effector cells against S. suis However, little is known about the biological relationship between S. suis and LL-37 and how this bacterium adapts to and evades LL-37-mediated immune responses. In this study by using an array of approaches, including enzyme, chemotaxis, cytokine assays, quantitative RT-PCR, and CD spectroscopy, we found that the cysteine protease ApdS from S. suis cleaves LL-37 and thereby plays a key role in the interaction between S. suis and human neutrophils. S. suis infection stimulated LL-37 production in human neutrophils, and S. suis exposure to LL-37 up-regulated ApdS protease expression in the bacterium. We observed that ApdS targets and rapidly cleaves LL-37, impairing its bactericidal activity against S. suis We attributed this effect to the decreased helical content of the secondary structure in the truncated peptide. Moreover, ApdS rescued S. suis from killing by human neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps because LL-37 truncation attenuated neutrophil chemotaxis and inhibited the formation of extracellular traps and the production of reactive oxygen species. Altogether, our findings reveal an immunosuppressive strategy of S. suis whereby the bacterium blunts the innate host defenses via ApdS protease-mediated LL-37 cleavage.

Investigations of Anisotropic Flow Using Multiparticle Azimuthal Correlations in pp, p-Pb, Xe-Xe, and Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:142301. Abstract
Measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients (v_{n}) and their cross-correlations using two- and multiparticle cumulant methods are reported in collisions of pp at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, p-Pb at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, Xe-Xe at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44 TeV, and Pb-Pb at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. The multiplicity dependence of v_{n} is studied in a very wide range from 20 to 3000 particles produced in the midrapidity region |η|<0.8 for the transverse momentum range 0.2<p_{T}<3.0 GeV/c. An ordering of the coefficients v_{2}>v_{3}>v_{4} is found in pp and p-Pb collisions, similar to that seen in large collision systems, while a weak v_{2} multiplicity dependence is observed relative to nucleus-nucleus collisions in the same multiplicity range. Using a novel subevent method, v_{2} measured with four-particle cumulants is found to be compatible with that from six-particle cumulants in pp and p-Pb collisions. The magnitude of the correlation between v_{n}^{2} and v_{m}^{2}, evaluated with the symmetric cumulants SC(m,n) is observed to be positive at all multiplicities for v_{2} and v_{4}, while for v_{2} and v_{3} it is negative and changes sign for multiplicities below 100, which may indicate a different v_{n} fluctuation pattern in this multiplicity range. The observed long-range multiparticle azimuthal correlations in high multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions can neither be described by pythia 8 nor by impact-parameter-Glasma, music, and ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model calculations, and hence, provide new insights into the understanding of collective effects in small collision systems.

Abstract
The presence of toxic degradation products in lignocellulosic hydrolysate typically reduced fermentation rates and xylose consumption rate, resulting in a decreased ethanol productivity. In the present study, Zymomonas mobilis 8b was investigated for high cell density fermentation with cell recycling to improve the ethanol productivity in lignocellulosic hydrolysate. The fermentation performances of Z. mobilis 8b at various conditions were first studied in yeast extract-tryptone medium. It was found that nutrient level was essential for glucose and xylose co-fermentation by Z. mobilis 8b and high cell density fermentation with cell recycling worked well in yeast extract-tryptone medium for 6 rounds fermentation. Z. mobilis 8b was then studied in enzymatic hydrolysates derived from dilute acid (DA) pretreated corn stover (CS) and ammonia pretreated CS for high cell density fermentation with cell recycling. Ethanol productivity obtained was around three times higher compared to traditional fermentation. Ethanol titer and metabolic yield were also enhanced with high cell density fermentation. Z. mobilis 8b cells showed high recyclability in ammonia pretreated CS hydrolysate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anti-VEGF agent ranibizumab has been extensively used as a standard treatment for wet AMD. We investigated whether traditional Chinese medicine could serve as a complementary therapy for this disease. METHODS 144 patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration received either intravitreal ranibizumab treatment as needed plus placebo or intravitreal ranibizumab treatment as needed plus an FDA approved traditional Chinese patent medicine named ZQMT. Both groups received treatment for 24 weeks. The primary outcome was the mean change of visual acuity at week 24 as compared to the baseline. RESULTS We found that intravitreal ranibizumab treatment plus ZQMT was non-inferior to the treatment with intravitreal ranibizumab alone in improving visual acuity scores at week 24 with patients in both groups who gained substantial numbers of letters. In addition, we found that ZQMT treatment resulted in significant improvements in reducing retinal hemorrhage, fluid, and lesion size. Importantly, administration of ZQMT reduced the number of needed ranibizumab injections (P<0.0001, analysis of variance) in wet AMD patients leading to a significant reduction of drug cost. CONCLUSION The combinatory therapy of ranibizumab and traditional Chinese patent medicine ZQMT had equivalent effects on visual acuity improvement and safety profiles as the ranibizumab treatment alone. Ranibizumab injections coupled with ZQMT offer therapeutic advantages in terms of reduction of retinal lesions and ease the financial burden of patients undergoing treatment by reducing the frequency of necessary ranibizumab injections.

Abstract
Cotton plants produce gossypol as a major secondary metabolite to resist insect herbivores and pathogens. Helicoverpa armigera may employ multigene families of detoxification enzymes to deal with this metabolite. So far, the strength of the transcriptional response to gossypol detoxification in the cotton bollworms remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the genomewide transcriptional changes that occur in cotton bollworm larvae after one generation feeding on various host plants (cotton, corn, soybean and chili) or an artificial diet. Six genes potentially involved in detoxification of xenobiotics were highly upregulated in bollworms fed on cotton, and the expression of five of these differed significantly in insects that fed on gossypol diet compared with the artificial diet. When these six genes were downregulated using RNA interference, downregulation only of CYP4L11, CYP6AB9 and CCE001b led to reduced growth of bollworm larvae feeding on gossypol diets. These data suggest that the three genes are involved in response of H. armigera to gossypol of cotton. Our results proved that H. armigera may have a broad mechanism for gossypol detoxification.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pediatric Ewing sarcoma (ES)/primitive neuro-ectodermal tumor (PNET) occurring in the genitourinary system has been rarely reported. And the result of long-term follow-up is still a matter of debate. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to identify the characteristics, therapeutic strategies, and long-term outcomes of pediatric ES/PNET in the genitourinary system. PATIENTS AND METHODS All children with genitourinary system PNET from a single center were retrospectively reviewed. The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system was used to evaluate tumor grade. RESULTS Four patients were included. Three were boys, and 1 was a girl. The locations of the lesions were the penis in 1 patient, ureter in 1 patient, and kidney in 2 patients. Two patients were of AJCC stage IVB, and the other 2 patients were of stage IIA. In the follow-up ranging from 2.5 to 8.0 years, 3 patients had survival, and 1 patient died. The patient with penis PNET survived during the 8 years of follow-up. One patient with renal PNET had tumor thromboses in the renal vein, inferior vena cava, and right atrium, which was the first definite report in children (case 3). DISCUSSION Primitive neuro-ectodermal tumor as a highly malignant subgroup of blue round cell tumor is extremely rare in the genitourinary system, especially in children. The current case series represents the first report of penis PNET in children with the longest (8 years) follow-up and first definite report of pediatric renal PNET with vena cava and atrium tumor thrombus. In contrast to the previous literature, the patient with ureteral PNET in this study was much younger, who was the youngest child to be reported in the literature thus far. Although the key prognostic factor of the outcomes is detectable metastases at diagnosis, the patient with penis PNET and bone and lung metastasis in this series still survived. It was hypothesized from the data of present cases that young age was a protective factor, which was consistent with the previous literature. Aggressive therapy is not trivial for patients with multiple recurrences who can also be a long-term survivor. The survival outcomes of these high-stage patients were favorable with combination treatment. As the patient with penis PNET in this series had bone metastasis at his 7.5 years after definite diagnosis, five years of follow-up was not enough. The follow-up period should be extended, even to a lifetime follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Children with PNET have a better prognosis than adults. Aggressive combination treatment should be performed to improve prognosis and the survival rate. It is better to monitor the changes of the disease by extending the follow-up period.

Abstract
Clostridium has great potential in industrial application and medical research. But low DNA repair capacity and plasmids transformation efficiency severely delay development and application of genetic tools based on homologous recombination (HR). TargeTron is a gene editing technique dependent on the mobility of group II introns, rather than homologous recombination, which makes it very suitable for gene disruption of Clostridium. The application of TargeTron technology in solventogenic Clostridium is academically reported in 2007 and this tool has been introduced in various clostridia as it is easy to operate, time saving, and reliable. TargeTron has made great progress in solventogenic Clostridium in the aspects of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation pathway modification, important functional genes identification, and xylose metabolic pathway analysis and reconstruction. In the review, 12 years' advances of TargeTron technology applicable in solventogenic Clostridium, including its principle, technical characteristics, application, and efforts to expand its capabilities, or to avoid potential drawbacks, are revisisted. Some other technologies as putative competitors or collaborators are also discussed. It is believed that TargeTron combined with CRISPR/Cas-assisted gene/base editing and gene-expression regulation system will make a better future for clostridial genetic modification.

Abstract
This Letter presents the first experimental observation of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a multistrange baryon (hyperon) Ξ^{-}. The result is extracted from two-particle correlations of combined p-Ξ^{-}⊕p[over ¯]-Ξ[over ¯]^{+} pairs measured in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV at the LHC with ALICE. The measured correlation function is compared with the prediction obtained assuming only an attractive Coulomb interaction and a standard deviation in the range [3.6, 5.3] is found. Since the measured p-Ξ^{-}⊕p[over ¯]-Ξ[over ¯]^{+} correlation is significantly enhanced with respect to the Coulomb prediction, the presence of an additional, strong, attractive interaction is evident. The data are compatible with recent lattice calculations by the HAL-QCD Collaboration, with a standard deviation in the range [1.8, 3.7]. The lattice potential predicts a shallow repulsive Ξ^{-} interaction within pure neutron matter and this implies stiffer equations of state for neutron-rich matter including hyperons. Implications of the strong interaction for the modeling of neutron stars are discussed.

Abstract
Objective: To characterize the clinical features and outcomes of scimitar syndrome (SS) to aid the understanding of this syndrome. Methods: This retrospective study included 6 children who were diagnosed with SS at the pediatric cardiovascular center of Beijing Anzhen Hospital from January 2012 to September 2018. SS was diagnosed by echocardiography and confirmed by cardiac computed tomography angiography(CTA) or surgery. All data were collected to analyze the clinical and imaging characteristics and prognosis. Results: Among the 6 SS children (aged 2 months to 15 years; 5 males) weighed 5.6-17.1 kg. Three cases were infant type, the clinical manifestations were recurrent respiratory tract infection with growth retardation, including 2 cases with severe pulmonary hypertension, while 3 cases with adult type, were asymptomatic. Cardiac CTA imaging showed that the right single or all pulmonary veins descended through the diaphragm and converged into the inferior vena cava. One case was isolated infracardiac partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) without other malformations. The remaining 5 cases complicated with atrial septal defect, different vascular and trachea malformations as well as spinal malformations. Vascular malformations included pulmonary veins stenosis, abnormal origin of pulmonary artery branches, collateral branches of systemic artery supplying local lung tissue, and persistent left superior vena cava. The treatment varied according to the specific location of anomalous pulmonary venous connection, the degree of pulmonary hypertension and the severity of clinical symptoms. Four cases underwent one-stage radical surgery, one case accepted intervention to occlude the collateral artery which was supplying the right lower lung and received stage Ⅱ radical surgery half a year later, and the remaining one case died from pulmonary hypertension crisis preoperation. Conclusions: Isolated SS can easily miss diagnosis due to mild clinical symptoms. Patients with complicated malformations can benefit from combination therapy. SS associated with severe pulmonary hypertension can lead to early death. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can improve the prognosis of patients.

Abstract
This work investigated all possible process integration strategies for ethanol production from corn and dilute acid pretreated corn stover (CS) as mixed substrates. Three corn to pretreated CS ratios (20%:10%, 10%:20% and 5%:25%) were examined. When the ratio of corn to pretreated CS was 20%:10%, the process integration strategy that mixed corn with CS hydrolysate for liquefaction followed by SSF resulted in the highest ethanol titer of 99.3 g/L. Mixing liquefied corn with pretreated CS for hydrolysis/saccharification followed by fermentation was the best strategy for the other two ratios. The strategy of mixing liquefied corn with pretreated CS for 6 h hydrolysis followed by fermentation showed the highest productivity for all the tested ratios.

Azimuthal Anisotropy of Heavy-Flavor Decay Electrons in p-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 122:072301. Abstract
Angular correlations between heavy-flavor decay electrons and charged particles at midrapidity (|η|<0.8) are measured in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The analysis is carried out for the 0%-20% (high) and 60%-100% (low) multiplicity ranges. The jet contribution in the correlation distribution from high-multiplicity events is removed by subtracting the distribution from low-multiplicity events. An azimuthal modulation remains after removing the jet contribution, similar to previous observations in two-particle angular correlation measurements for light-flavor hadrons. A Fourier decomposition of the modulation results in a positive second-order coefficient (v_{2}) for heavy-flavor decay electrons in the transverse momentum interval 1.5<p_{T}<4 GeV/c in high-multiplicity events, with a significance larger than 5σ. The results are compared with those of charged particles at midrapidity and those of inclusive muons at forward rapidity. The v_{2} measurement of open heavy-flavor particles at midrapidity in small collision systems could provide crucial information to help interpret the anisotropies observed in such systems.

Abstract
Lignin is the most abundant aromatic substrate on Earth and its valorization technologies are still under developed. Depolymerization and fragmentation are the predominant preparatory strategies for valorization of lignin to chemicals and fuels. However, due to the structural heterogeneity of lignin, depolymerization and fragmentation typically result in diverse product species, which require extensive separation and purification procedures to obtain target products. For lignin valorization, bacterial-based systems have attracted increasing attention because of their diverse metabolisms, which can be used to funnel multiple lignin-based compounds into specific target products. Here, recent advances in lignin valorization using bacteria are critically reviewed, including lignin-degrading bacteria that are able to degrade lignin and use lignin-associated aromatics, various associated metabolic pathways, and application of bacterial cultures for lignin valorization. This review will provide insight into the recent breakthroughs and future trends of lignin valorization based on bacterial systems.

A novel FGFR1-binding peptide attenuates the degeneration of articular cartilage in adult mice. Osteoarthritis Cartilage 2018; 26:1733-1743. Abstract
OBJECTIVE We previously reported that genetic ablation of (Fibroblast Growth Factors Receptors) FGFR1 in knee cartilage attenuates the degeneration of articular cartilage in adult mice, which suggests that FGFR1 is a potential targeting molecule for osteoarthritis (OA). Here, we identified R1-P1, an inhibitory peptide for FGFR1 and investigated its effect on the pathogenesis of OA in mice induced by destabilization of medial meniscus (DMM). DESIGN Binding ability between R1-P1 and FGFR1 protein was evaluated by enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA) and molecular docking. Alterations in cartilage were evaluated histologically. The expression levels of molecules associated with articular cartilage homeostasis and FGFR1 signaling were analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), Western blotting and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The chondrocyte apoptosis was detected by terminal-deoxynucleoitidyl transferase mediated nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. RESULTS R1-P1 had highly binding affinities to human FGFR1 protein, and efficiently inhibited extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 pathway in mouse primary chondrocytes. In addition, R1-P1 attenuated the IL-1β induced significant loss of proteoglycan in full-thickness cartilage tissue from human femur head. Moreover, this peptide can significantly restore the IL-1β mediated loss of proteoglycan and type II collagen (Col II) and attenuate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP13) in mouse primary chondrocytes. Finally, intra-articular injection of R1-P1 remarkably attenuated the loss of proteoglycan and the destruction of articular cartilage and decreased the expressions of extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading enzymes and apoptosis in articular chondrocytes of mice underwent DMM surgery. CONCLUSIONS R1-P1, a novel inhibitory peptide for FGFR1, attenuates the degeneration of articular cartilage in adult mice, which is a potential leading molecule for the treatment of OA.
