Abstract
OBJECTIVE Interferon has been used as a new therapeutic agent for glomerulonephritis since a manifest relationship between membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection was documented. However, several side effects and rebound phenomenon have been significant problems. We retrospectively evaluated the therapeutic effect and safety of the standard treatment with steroids and/or immunosuppressive agents for MPGN patients with an HCV infection. METHODS Remission and renal survival rates as well as clinical and histological data were compared between MPGN groups with or without an HCV infection. In addition, the hepatic function was followed-up after the treatment. PATIENTS The subjects were 42 biopsy proven MPGN patients. Seven were positive for an HCV infection. Secondary causes of MPGN excluding an HCV infection were omitted. Most patients were treated with steroids and/or immunosuppressive agents. RESULTS The mean age of the MPGN patients with an HCV infection was significantly higher than that of those without an HCV infection. The renal function and the interstitial change of the former group were significantly worse than those of the latter. Nevertheless, remission and renal survival rates were not significantly different between the two groups. None in the HCV positive MPGN group showed an impairment of hepatic function during the clinical course. However, 2 subjects died from severe pneumonia during the treatment. CONCLUSION The standard treatment with steroids and/or immunosuppressive agents did not reveal a statistical difference in the therapeutic efficacy between MPGN patients with or without an HCV infection. However, some in the former group showed a poor prognosis.

Abstract
The correlation between histopathological characteristics and prognosis was studied in six cases of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas (PXA) found in five patients. With regard to the duration from onset to the resection of the tumor, and the postoperative course, three cases had a favorable prognosis, although one case fatally recurred and in another, serial CT showed rapid tumor growth for 3 years. The histological characteristics of the favorable group of PXA comprised remarkable degeneration, low mitotic activity and a low MIB-1 labeling index. In contrast, the characteristics of the latter two cases of PXA rarely showed degeneration, had atypical mitoses, increasing mitotic activity and a higher MIB-1 labeling index, which indicates that the findings of degeneration, atypical mitoses, mitotic activity and MIB-1 labeling index correlate with the biological behavior of PXA. However, with regard to histological appearance and clinical course, PXA are tumors with a wide range of biological behavior.

Abstract
Ankhzn (ankyrin repeats hooked to a zinc finger motif) was originally isolated by means of the gene trap method, as a novel cytoplasmic protein on mouse embryonic stem cells. The Ankhzn protein is ubiquitously expressed in a spatiotemporal-specific manner and is located on endosomes. In the present study, we have cloned human ANKHZN cDNA by PCR using candidate EST clones exhibiting a high homology to mouse Ankhzn cDNA. The human ANKHZN cDNA encoded a 1166aa protein exhibiting 84.9% identity to the mouse one. The size of the transcript was found to be about 7kb on a Northern blot analysis, and ANKHZN mRNA was found to be ubiquitously expressed in human tissues on RT-PCR analysis. Western blot analysis showed that a 130kDa protein was detected at various levels in human tissues and also present in both membrane and soluble fractions obtained on subcellular fractionation. Human ANKHZN is a single copy gene consisting of predicted 25 exons in the human genome, and has been mapped to human chromosome 17p13 by radiation hybrid panel and fluorescence in-situ hybridization.

Abstract
The loss and phase advance due to diffraction are experimentally observed by measuring the amplitude and phase of radio frequency (rf) tone burst signals in the VHF range, in an ultrasonic transmission line consisting of a buffer rod with an ultrasonic transducer on one end, a couplant of water, and a solid specimen of synthetic silica glass. The measured results agree well with the calculated results from the exact integral expression of diffraction. The diffraction effects on the velocity and attenuation measured in this frequency range and their corrections are investigated to realize more accurate measurements. It is shown that attenuation measurements are influenced by diffraction losses and can be corrected by numerical calculations, and that velocity measurements are affected by the phase advance caused by diffraction. This investigation demonstrates that, in complex-mode velocity measurements, in which the velocity is determined from the measured phase of the signals, the true velocity at each frequency can be obtained by correction using the numerical calculation of diffraction. Based on this result, a new correction method in amplitude-mode velocity measurements is also proposed. In this new method, the velocity is determined from the intervals of interference output obtained by sweeping the ultrasonic frequency for the superposed signals generated by the double-pulse method. Velocity may be measured accurately at frequencies in the Fresnel region, and diffraction correction is essential to obtain highly accurate values with five significant figures or more.

Abstract
A 28 year-old man complaining of intermittent headaches for a month following an episode of general convulsions was admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery of our hospital. His brain CT scan showed a well-enhanced mass growing symmetrically along the anterior cerebral falx in a manner compatible with meningioma. Nothing abnormal was detected in chest radiography on admission. Histopathological examination of the mass after partial resection revealed multiple epithelioid cell granulomas with giant cells indicating sarcoidosis. After 4 weeks of treatment with oral prednisolone 30 mg/day, bronchoalveolar lavage was performed in our department. In the lavage fluid, both the total cell count and the percentage of lymphocytes were elevated. The lung specimens obtained by transbronchial biopsy also showed epithelioid cell granulomas. CNS sarcoidosis is reportedly usually observed in the vicinity of the hypothalamus with other organ involvement. In the present case, differential diagnosis of sarcoidosis from meningioma was difficult because the solitary lesion was growing along the anterior cerebral falx without radiographic evidence of bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy.

Abstract
Recurrence of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) following renal transplantation has been described in 40-50% of such patients and it usually has a good outcome. We present the case of a 20-yr-old woman with IgAN who developed end-stage renal failure in 1995. In November 1996, she received a kidney from a living-related donor and was treated with tacrolimus, azathioprine and steroids. Zero- and one-hour biopsies were performed, which revealed minor glomerular abnormalities in light microscopy, thin basement membrane disease (TBMD) in electron microscopy. Eight months later she developed microscopic hematuria and proteinuria; however, the graft function was normal. Renal biopsy revealed an IgAN that is thought to be due to recurrence of the original disease.

Abstract
A total of 788 people (aged from 60 to 93 years) living in the Okinawa prefecture, renowned for the long life expectancy of its citizens, were randomly chosen as subjects. A questionnaire based on lifestyle and sleep-health was distributed. Following this, subjects were chosen in groups of nine from the good sleep-health group and then from the poor sleep-health group based on the results of the survey; their physical activities were then recorded using actigraphs for 1 week. This study suggested that lifestyle, such as exercise, walking and short naps, occupies an important position in the maintenance and improvement of sleep-health. It also verified the reliability of the sleep-health risk index and the questionnaire.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sustained proteinuria is reported to be very harmful to the tubulointerstitium, leading to severe interstitial injury. However, it remains unclear whether sustained proteinuria itself is responsible for severe interstitial injury because, in the previously reported models, the development of factors other than proteinuria in tubulointerstitial lesions could not be excluded completely. METHODS After treatment to induce immune tolerance to mouse immunoglobulin, 20 rats were injected with anti-rat slit diaphragm monoclonal antibody (mAb) 5-1-6 twice a week for 6 months and were then sacrificed. RESULTS mAb 5-1-6 induced massive proteinuria in 11 rats. In nine rats with mild proteinuria, no histological alteration could be detected with light microscopy and immunofluorescence. In nephrotic rats, light microscopy showed minor glomerular abnormalities, with interstitial oedema, tubular epithelial cell degeneration and interstitial cell infiltration. Immunofluorescence revealed increased expression of vimentin and an increased number of OX1-, OX19- and ED1-positive cells. However, we could not detect any accumulation of type I and IV collagen or laminin in the tubulointerstitium. RT-PCR showed that the expression of mRNA for type I collagen was not increased, compared with that in control rats. CONCLUSIONS We succeeded in developing a model of persistent nephrosis without severe glomerular abnormalities, nephrectomy or other manoeuvres known to induce disturbed haemodynamics, using an agent without tubulointerstitial toxicity, and considered it to be suitable for investigating the direct toxicity of proteinuria. In this model, isolated massive proteinuria induced interstitial injury. However, the degree of injury was suggested to be much less than that observed in other previously developed models.

Abstract
A 48-year-old man was treated with chemotherapy and irradiation therapy for superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) caused by adenocarcinoma of the lung, and his symptoms subsided temporarily. However, the same symptoms recurred, and severe snoring during sleep and daytime hypersomnolence developed. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) was diagnosed by respiratory inductive plethysmography. After chemotherapy, the symptoms of edema of the face and arms, snoring, and daytime somnolence tendency were alleviated, and the patient's apnea hypopnea index decreased remarkably. In addition, lateral cephalograms disclosed improved patency of the upper respiratory tract and dilation of the soft palate. These findings suggested a relationship between SVCS and OSAS. OSAS may cause a deterioration of circulatory dynamics and the quality of life when it develops secondary to SVCS. Therefore, it is necessary to determine whether OSAS is present and accordingly provide suitable treatment in patients with SVCS.

Abstract
A 76-year-old woman who had complained of cough and productive sputum since mid-January, 1999, was admitted to our hospital with fever and dyspnea on February 4, 1999. She had been treated with levofloxacin at an outpatient clinic. On admission, she had orthopnea, and auscultation revealed coarse crackles and wheeze in the bilateral lung fields. Chest x-ray and CT films showed non-segmental infiltration in bilateral lung fields. Laboratory data revealed eosinophilia in peripheral blood (= 24%) and sputum (= 10%), airflow limitation, hypoxemia (PaO2: 46 Torr), and increased airway responsiveness to methacholine (Dmin: 0.127 units). A bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid showed increased total cells and a 55% increase in eosinophils, and CD4/CD8 ratio was decreased to 0.8. In addition, IL-5 was increased in BAL fluid. Transbronchial lung biopsy specimens revealed infiltrations of eosinophils in the alveolar and interstitial compartments. Histological features of the bronchial biopsy specimens included increased eosinophils in the submucosa and goblet cell metaplasia. The woman was diagnosed with eosinophilic pneumonia complicated by bronchial asthma. She was given theophylline, pranlukast hydrate, and an inhaled beta 2 receptor agonist (procaterol hydrochloride), and pre-admission drugs including Levofloxacin were discontinued. Her symptoms were improved, peak expiratory flow rate and PaO2 increased, airway responsiveness to methacholine decreased (Dmin: 0.615 units), and radiographic abnormalities disappeared without steroid therapy. A leukocyte migration test for levofloxacin was weakly positive. An environmental provocation test in the patient's home gave negative results. A challenge test for levofloxacin was not performed due to a lack of informed consent. Based on these findings, we diagnosed this case as levofloxacin-induced lung injury manifesting as eosinophilic pneumonia complicated by bronchial asthma. Levofloxacin should be added to the list of agents that can produce eosinophilic pneumonia.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the utility of blasts with a clear halo around their nucleoli (BCHN) as a predictive indicator of disease progression in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs) and aplastic anemia (AA). Bone marrow aspirates from 75 patients with MDSs and 18 with AA were fixed in 95% ethanol solution or 10% neutral formalin and stained with the Papanicolaou method. BCHNs were detected in 57 of 75 patients with MDSs and in 10 of 18 AA patients. Disease progression was restrictedly observed in 17 patients with MDSs who had BCHNs at onset and in 1 patient with AA. The proportion of BCHNs increased with disease progression in these 16 of 17 patients with MDSs. The presence of BCHNs at onset and the increase in proportion of BCHNs during the clinical course of MDSs were significant indications for predicting disease progression.

Abstract
The bacteria isolated from the patients with lower respiratory tract infections were collected by institutions located throughout Japan, since 1981. Ikemoto et al. have been investigating susceptibilities of these isolates to various antibacterial agents and antibiotics, and analyzed some characteristics of the patients and isolates from them each year. Results obtained from these investigations are discussed. In these 18 institutions around the entire Japan, 532 strains of presumably etiological bacteria were isolated mainly from the sputa of 438 patients with lower respiratory tract infections during the period from October in 1998 to September in 1999. MICs of various antibacterial agents and antibiotics were determined against 85 strains of Staphylococcus aureus, 100 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, 96 strains of Haemophilus influenzae, 75 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (non-mucoid strains), 6 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (mucoid strains), 38 strains of Moraxella subgenus Branhamella catarrhalis, 26 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae etc., and the susceptibilities of 517 strains were assessed except for those strains that died during transportation. S. aureus strains for which MICs of oxacillin (MPIPC) were higher than 4 micrograms/ml (methicillin-resistant S. aureus: MRSA) accounted for 60.0%. Vancomycin (VCM) and arbekacin (ABK) showed the most potent activities against MRSA. But one of MRSA showed resistance to ABK with the MIC of 64 micrograms/ml. The sensitive strains of MRSA to VCM have decreased. The frequency of penicillin (PC)-intermediate S. pneumoniae (PISP) + PC-resistant S. pneumoniae (PRSP) have increased in 46.0% for 1998 comparatively from 30.9% of 1997's. But PRSP decreased, and PISP increased into 39.0% of 1998 years from 19.8% of 1997's. Panipenem (PAPM), imipenem (IPM) and faropenem (FRPM) showed the most potent activities against S. pneumoniae with MIC80s of 0.125 microgram/ml or below. Against H. influenzae and M. (B.) catarrhalis, almost all the drugs showed good activities. The sensitive strains of them against ceftazidime (CAZ) decreased in 1997, but those have increased in 1998. Inversely, the susceptibility of them against cefotiam (CTM) had been higher in 1997, but those have been lower in 1998. Tobramycin (TOB) showed the most potent activity against P. aeruginosa (both mucoid and nonmucoid strains). All drugs except ampicillin (ABPC) were active against K. pneumoniae. A quite few of K. pneumoniae showed low susceptibilities. Also, we investigated year to year changes in the characteristics of patients, their respiratory infectious diseases, and the etiology. The examination of age distribution indicated that the proportion of patients with ages over 70 years was 48.6% of all the patients showing a slight increase in every year. About the proportion of diagnosed diseases as follows: Bacterial pneumonia was the most frequent with 40.2%. The ratio of it has increased slightly, and the increased rate was 10% in patients with ages over 70 years compared with the results in 1997. Chronic bronchitis have decreased slightly with 27.6% in 1998. Number of strains isolated from patients before administration of antibiotics were more than those after administration of them in chronic bronchitis, but these were almost same number in bacterial pneumonia. Administration of antibiotics has changed the results of the frequency of isolation of bacterial species. Bacterial isolations before administration of antibiotics were as follows: S. pneumoniae 26.7%, H. influenzae 23.8%, S. aureus 13.3% and M. (B.) catarrhalis 10.8%. The frequencies of S. aureus decreased after antibiotics administration over 15 days, but the frequencies of P. aeruginosa (both mucoid and non-mucoid) was not affected. Abstract
A 65-year-old woman was admitted because of dyspnea and persistent cough. Her chest radiograph and CT films revealed multiple nodular and patchy shadows in bilateral lungs, indicating bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP)-like shadows. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia was diagnosed because peripheral blood cell analysis revealed anemia (hemoglobin, 5.5 g/dl) with increased reticulocytes (253/1000), and positive direct and indirect Coomb's tests. In addition, decreased diffusion capacity and mild hypoxemia (PaO2, 71 Torr) were recognized. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) showed the increased number of total cells and lymphocytes, and a decreased CD4(helper)/CD8(suppressor) ratio (= 0.65). Histopathological features of transbronchial lung biopsy showed an infiltration of lymphocytes in the alveolar walls and spaces, and thickening of the alveolar walls. A discrepancy was apparent among roentgenogram, histopathological findings and BALF results. Open lung biopsy had not been performed because of severe hemolytic anemia and lack of informed consent. In addition, the patient suffered from chronic thyroiditis with positive thyroid autoantibody. After oral administration of prednisolone, both pulmonary shadows and anemia improved. We concluded that autoimmune hemolytic anemia may be associated with steroid-sensitive interstitial lung lesions in some cases. Further immunologic studies are necessary to elucidate the relationship between autoimmune hemolytic anemia and interstitial lung shadows.

Abstract
The study was carried out to evaluate the therapeutic effects of zanamivir, a highly selective, potent and specific inhibitor of influenza A and B virus neuraminidases, in adult patients with acute influenza-like illness. Patients who presented within 36 h of the onset of influenza-like symptoms were randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments, twice daily, for 5 days: 10 mg zanamivir powder for inhalation (zanamivir inhalation group), 10 mg zanamivir powder for inhalation plus 6.4 mg zanamivir nasal spray (zanamivir inhalation plus intranasal group) or placebo (placebo group). The primary end point was the time to alleviation of the three major symptoms (fever, headache and myalgia). The secondary end point was the time to alleviation of five influenza symptoms (fever, headache, myalgia, cough and sore throat). One hundred and sixteen patients with influenza-like illness were recruited to the study. No differences were observed between the two groups of patients who received zanamivir (inhalation group or inhalation plus intranasal group). Patients who received zanamivir recovered significantly faster (median 3 days to recovery) than the patients in the placebo group (median 4 days to recovery; P < 0.01). Topically administered zanamivir was well tolerated. This study confirms that in adults, topically administered zanamivir is well tolerated and is effective in reducing the time to alleviation of influenza symptoms.

Abstract
A 62-year-old woman had been treated with propylthiouracil(PTU) for hyperthyroidism. Because bloody sputum, dyspnea, and severe hypoxemia developed, the patient was admitted to our hospital. Chest X-ray and chest computed tomographic (CT) films disclosed diffuse infiltrative shadows in both lung fields. Bronchoalveolar lavage revealed abundant hemosiderin-laden macrophages. Alveolar hemorrhage associated with myeloperoxidase-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (MPO-ANCA) positive vasculitis syndrome was diagnosed because of the high serum level of MPO-ANCA. After the initiation of steroid therapy and termination of PTU, the infiltrative shadows in both lung fields disappeared, PaO2 improved, and MPO-ANCA decreased. There have been some reports of MPO-ANCA positive vasculitis syndrome developing during PTU therapy, but most were concerned with renal disease. We concluded that PTU and similar agents should be given consideration as one of the possible causes of MPO-ANCA-induced alveolar hemorrhage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) is secreted by T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells in the cellular immunity-mediated inflammatory lesion, including endocapillary or extracapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis. It induces and/or enhances multiple histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and Fc receptor expression in renal resident cells, resulting in the initiation and promotion of inflammation. Recently, the signaling mechanism of IFN-gamma has been investigated, and it appears that Stat1alpha is essential for signaling. We investigated Stat1alpha activation by IFN-gamma in mesangial cells and attempted to regulate the signal transduction by gene transfer. METHODS Western blot with anti-Stat1 and antiphosphotyrosine after immunoprecipitation of Stat1 and Northern blot for detection of Stat1 mRNA were performed. The dominant negative form of Flag-tagged Stat1 was expressed in cultured rat mesangial cells. Flag was immunostained in transfectants, and luciferase reporter assay was carried out to measure the transcriptional activity of Stat1alpha. The expression of IFN-gamma-inducible genes such as MHC class II (Ia-Aalpha) and MHC class II transactivator (CIITA) was detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS Stat1alpha was tyrosine phosphorylated and activated by IFN-gamma in mesangial cells, and the mRNA and protein level of Stat1alpha increased upon stimulation by IFN-gamma. Overexpression of Stat1-mutant lacking 35 C-terminal amino acids strongly suppressed the IFN-gamma-induced signal transduction and inhibited the expression of MHC class II and CIITA genes in mesangial cells. CONCLUSIONS Stat1alpha is a critical molecule in the signal transduction of IFN-gamma in mesangial cells. The inhibition of an endogenous function of Stat1alpha by gene transfer of the Stat1 mutant may be a new method to reduce the inflammatory effects of IFN-gamma in localized inflammation of the kidney.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this investigation was to assess the role of the von Korff-like fibers (VKF) during the process of dentin bridging. STUDY DESIGN The monkey pulps, exposed to a hard-set calcium hydroxide, were evaluated at 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 90, and 180 days. RESULTS At 21 days, longitudinal and transverse collagen fibrils were organized as lamellar structures in close proximity to and subjacent to the newly formed predentin. VKF bundles were present between newly formed odontoblastoid cells. The VKF were bundles of thin collagen fibrils inserted into the predentin, which consisted of thick collagen fibrils. At 30 days, the exposure site was completely occluded with a new predentin matrix; lamellar structures and VKF were no longer present. CONCLUSIONS The VKF may play a role in the connective tissue attachment to the dentin bridge, early in its formation.

Abstract
A phase I dose-escalation study of multicyclic, ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide (ICE) with sequential reinfusion of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) was conducted to determine the maximum-tolerated dose (MTD) of ICE. Twenty-four patients with SCLC (LD: 6, ED: 18) were treated with ifosfamide (3000-9000 mg/m2, 24-h infusion), carboplatin (300-400 mg/m2), and etoposide (300 mg/m2) followed by subcutaneous filgrastim (75 microg/day) from day 4 to the day of PBSC collection. PBSC were harvested when the WBC count reached >/=5 x 109/l. The leukapheresis product was cryopreserved and reinfused on day 4 of the next cycle, which was started 48 h after the last PBSC collection. The ifosfamide dose was escalated as follows: 3000 mg/m2 (level 1), 5000 mg/m2 (level 2), 7000 mg/m2 (level 3), 9000 mg/m2 (level 4). Patients with LD were treated with concurrent radiotherapy at 1.5 Gy twice daily for the initial 3 weeks to a total dose of 45 Gy and MTD, defined separately. Patients were evaluated for hematologic and non-hematologic toxicity, actual dose intensities, as well as response to therapy. The maximum-tolerated dose (MTD) was defined as the dose level at which more than 5 days of grade 4 myelo- suppression or non-hematologic toxicity greater than grade 3 developed in two thirds of the patients. For ED cases, MTD was level 4 and the recommended dose of ifosfamide was 7000 mg/m2. For LD cases, the recommended dose of ifosfamide was 5000 mg/m2. The dose limiting toxicity of multicyclic ICE was hemato- logic toxicity and CNS toxicity which manifested as ataxia. Tumor responses were seen in all patients, with 14 patients showing a complete response. The actual total dose-intensity at the recommended dose level was 2.2 and 1.74, for ED and LD, respectively, compared with previously reported ICE regimens. PBSC support for dose-intensive ICE regimen permitted dose escalation of ifosfamide with a mean interval of 16-17 days. Abstract
We investigated the velocity measurements of leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAW) by line-focus-beam (LFB) acoustic microscopy of thin specimens for which the waves reflected from the back surface of the specimen (back reflection) must be included in the measurement model. The influence of back reflection resulted in a serious problem in measurement accuracy of the apparent changes of measured velocities. Using several samples of thin synthetic silica glasses, the determination of LSAW velocity affected by the reflected waves and the relationship between the specimen thickness and the apparent velocity change with a periodic frequency interval in the frequency dependence of measured LSAW velocities are discussed in detail. Three useful methods for eliminating that influence are proposed and demonstrated: first, separating the radio frequency (RF) pulsed wave signal from the specimen surface and the pulses reflected from the back surface by reducing the RF pulse width; second, scattering acoustic waves from the roughened back surface; and third, taking the moving average of measured frequency characteristics of LSAW velocities. It is shown that, among these methods, the moving average method is the most useful and effective as a general means to eliminate the influence and to determine intrinsic velocity values because this method needs no specimen process and no system change, and the same conventional V(z) curve measurement and analysis can be employed.

Abstract
A total of 1,223 elderly people in nursing homes in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, were immunized with one or two doses of commercial trivalent split vaccine formulation, against strains including A/HN, A/H3N2 and B for three seasons (1996-1999). The frequencies of adverse reactions and antibody induction were assessed. Frequent side effects of vaccination were local reactions such as redness and tenderness at the site of injection, but there were no serious reactions, suggesting that the vaccine was quite safe for the elderly. Furthermore, antibody induction by immunization was relatively high and independent of the degree of activities of daily living (ADL). Annual repeated influenza vaccination did not diminish protection against influenza. However, antibody induction against antigens was insufficient in the 1997/1998 season, and further improvement in the combination of quantities of the four included antigens may by required. A booster dose after the first dose did not enhance immune responses in the nursing staff, and the one dose method appeared to be indicated for the elderly.

Abstract
The lipid peroxidation product, 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE), has been shown to induce apoptosis in PC12 cells and hippocampal neurons. We compared the degree of cell death induced by survival signal withdrawal (K+ and serum deprivation) with that induced by HNE, and investigated whether agents that block survival signal withdrawal-induced apoptosis could also prevent HNE-induced cell death in cultured cerebellar granule cells. Cell death induced by K+ and serum deprivation was inhibited by cycloheximide, a CPP 32-like protease inhibitor (Ac-DEVD-CHO) and a pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP)-38. In addition, nuclear cyclic AMP responsive element (CRE)- and activator protein 1 (AP-1) DNA-binding activities were increased 2 h after K+ and serum withdrawal, and these increases were inhibited by cycloheximide, Ac-DEVD-CHO and PACAP 38. Although these agents also blocked HNE-induced cell death, consistent with their efficacy in preventing survival signal withdrawal-induced cells death, CRE and AP-1 DNA-binding activities were decreased in a time-dependent manner during HNE-induced cell death. These results suggest that mechanistic differences exist between apoptosis induced by HNE and that induced by withdrawal of survival signals in cerebellar granule neurons.
