Abstract
Venous stenting has been shown to effectively treat iliofemoral venous obstruction with good short- and mid-term results. The aim of this study was to investigate long-term clinical outcome and stent patency. Twenty patients were treated with venous stenting for benign disease at our institution between 1987 and 2005. Fifteen of 20 patients (15 female, mean age at time of stent implantation 38 years [range 18-66]) returned for a clinical visit, a plain X-ray of the stent, and a Duplex ultrasound. Four patients were lost to follow-up, and one patient died 277 months after stent placement although a good clinical result was documented 267 months after stent placement. Mean follow-up after stent placement was 167.8 months (13.9 years) (range 71 (6 years) to 267 months [22 years]). No patient needed an additional venous intervention after stent implantation. No significant difference between the circumference of the thigh on the stented side (mean 55.1 cm [range 47.0-70.0]) compared with the contralateral thigh (mean 54.9 cm [range 47.0-70.0]) (p=0.684) was seen. There was a nonsignificant trend toward higher flow velocities within the stent (mean 30.8 cm/s [range 10.0-48.0]) and the corresponding vein segment on the contralateral side (mean 25.2 cm/s [range 12.0-47.0]) (p=0.065). Stent integrity was confirmed in 14 of 15 cases. Only one stent showed a fracture, as documented on x-ray, without any impairment of flow. Venous stenting using Wallstents showed excellent long-term clinical outcome and primary patency rate.

Abstract
2D-shape analysis of biological objects is described first in 2007 with MRI-data (magnetic resonance imaging) of renal tumours of infancy. For shape analysis the evaluation of landmarks is necessary (n >2). In this study 24 landmarks are selected. Every object is described by these landmarks. The shape is the standardised and centred object. The procedure is applied on transversal as well as on frontal images. The results for frontal and transversal images are compared. Tumours of different origin, topography and size can be analysed. The differentiation of relevant landmarks is important for statistical and medical reason. In this study, evaluation of landmarks and their possibility for tumour differentiation is demonstrated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated whether acupuncture as a supportive antiemetic approach reduces the need for antiemetic rescue medication during highly emetogenic chemotherapy in pediatric oncology. We report on a multicenter crossover study at 5 tertiary hospitals in Germany. PROCEDURE Twenty-three children (13.6 y,+/- 2.9) receiving highly emetogenic chemotherapy for treatment of solid malignant tumors were included. Patients were randomly allocated to receive acupuncture treatment during either the second or third identical chemotherapy course together with standard antiemetic medication. The main outcome measure was the amount of additional antiemetic medication during chemotherapy. Secondary outcome measure was the number of episodes of vomiting per course. RESULTS Fourty-six chemotherapy courses with or without acupuncture were compared. The need for rescue antiemetic medication was significantly lower in acupuncture courses compared to control courses (p=0.001) Episodes of vomiting per course were also significantly lower in courses with acupuncture (p=0.01). Except for pain from needling (4/23) no side effects occurred. Patients acceptance of acupuncture was high. CONCLUSIONS Acupuncture as applied here seems to be effective in preventing nausea and vomiting in pediatric cancer patients.

Abstract
Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare tumor with a particular histological pattern of myofibroblasts and mixed inflammatory infiltrate. IMT has been rarely described in association with malignancy. This case report is of a 16-year-old male who had Hodgkin's disease (stage IVA) and who after chemotherapy and radiotherapy developed IMT, 16 months post completion of therapy. The IMT was in the lung in an area which was previously involved with HD and had undergone radiotherapy. PET imaging with F(18)FDG was used in the initial diagnosis and has been used in follow-up after full surgical resection of the lesion.

Abstract
In Australia, as in other developed countries, approximately 40-50% of stillbirths are of unknown aetiology. Emerging evidence suggests stillbirths are often multifactorial. The absence of a known cause leads to uncertainty regarding the risk of recurrence, which can cause extreme anguish for parents that may manifest as guilt, anger or bewilderment. Further, clinical endeavours to prevent recurrences in future pregnancies are impaired by lack of a defined aetiology. Therefore, efforts to provide an aetiological diagnosis of stillbirth impact upon all aspects of care of the mother, and inform many parts of clinical decision making. Despite the magnitude of the problem, that is 7 stillbirths per 1000 births in Australia, diagnostic efforts to discover viral aetiologies are often minimal. Viruses and other difficult to culture organisms have been postulated as the aetiology of a number of obstetric and paediatric conditions of unknown cause, including stillbirth. Reasons forwarded for testing stillbirth cases for infectious agents are non-medical factors, including addressing all parents' need for diagnostic closure, identifying infectious agents as a sporadic cause of stillbirth to reassure parents and clinicians regarding risk for future pregnancies, and to reduce unnecessary testing. It is clear that viral agents including rubella, human cytomegalovirus (CMV), parvovirus B19, herpes simplex virus (HSV), lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), and varicella zoster virus (VZV) may cause intrauterine deaths. Evidence for many other agents is that minimal or asymptomatic infections also occur, so improved markers of adverse outcomes are needed. The role of other viruses and difficult-to-culture organisms in stillbirth is uncertain, and needs more research. However, testing stillborn babies for some viral agents remains a useful adjunct to histopathological and other examinations at autopsy. Modern molecular techniques such as multiplex PCR, allow searches for multiple agents. Now that such testing is available, it is important to assess the clinical usefulness of such testing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Wilms' tumor (nephroblastoma) is the most frequent renal tumor in childhood. In contrast nephroblastoma in adults is rare, and the disease used to have a poor prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Of 1,300 registered patients, a total of 41 patients older than 16 years were enrolled in the pediatric nephroblastoma trial from 1994 to 2005. Median age at diagnosis was 25.4 years (range: 16-62 years). Treatment was given according to the pediatric protocol. RESULTS The adults had higher local stages, more frequent metastasis, and developed more toxicity due to therapy. Vincristine caused severe neurotoxicity in many cases. The distribution of histological subtypes was similar to the children's. The outcome is better than previously described with an overall survival of 71%. Patients with local stage I and II have an event-free survival of 84%. This is comparable to children's survival rates. CONCLUSION Adults with nephroblastoma have a very good prognosis if treated according to a pediatric protocol.

Abstract
Life sciences are currently at the centre of an information revolution. The nature and amount of information now available opens up areas of research that were once in the realm of science fiction. During this information revolution, the data-gathering capabilities have greatly surpassed the data-analysis techniques. Data integration across heterogeneous data sources and data aggregation across different aspects of the biomedical spectrum, therefore, is at the centre of current biomedical and pharmaceutical R&D.This paper reports on original results from the ACGT integrated project, focusing on the design and development of a European Biomedical Grid infrastructure in support of multi-centric, post-genomic clinical trials (CTs) on cancer. Post-genomic CTs use multi-level clinical and genomic data and advanced computational analysis and visualization tools to test hypotheses in trying to identify the molecular reasons for a disease and the stratification of patients in terms of treatment. The paper provides a presentation of the needs of users involved in post-genomic CTs and presents indicative scenarios, which drive the requirements of the engineering phase of the project. Subsequently, the initial architecture specified by the project is presented, and its services are classified and discussed. A range of such key services, including the Master Ontology on sCancer, which lie at the heart of the integration architecture of the project, is presented. Special efforts have been taken to describe the methodological and technological framework of the project, enabling the creation of a legally compliant and trustworthy infrastructure. Finally, a short discussion of the forthcoming work is included, and the potential involvement of the cancer research community in further development or utilization of the infrastructure is described.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The first months of life may represent a vulnerable period in the development of atopic diseases. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the month of birth and the development of birch and grass pollen allergy in the Swiss population. METHODS Data from the Swiss Study on Air Pollution and Lung Diseases in Adults(SAPALDIA) as well as the Swiss Study on Childhood Allergy and Respiratory Symptoms with Respect to Air Pollution and Climate (SCARPOL) were used. A logistic regression was calculated with grass and birch pollen sensitisation (positive skin prick test) or allergy (positive skin prick test and allergic symptoms) as outcome variables and the season of birth as predictor variable. The contribution of the season of birth on pollinosis was further adjusted for well-known risk factors and potential confounding variables. RESULTS The logistic regression revealed a significant effect of the season of birth on birch pollen sensitisation and an effect of borderline significance on birch pollen allergy, i.e. subjects born in the pollen season (March to April) showed an increased risk of being sensitised/allergic to birch pollen. The results also indicated a tendency towards an increased risk for subjects born in the grass pollen season (May to June) to develop grass pollen allergy. CONCLUSION Our results support the hypothesis that the first few months of life constitute a sensitive period, during which inhalative exposure to certain allergens may predispose to the subsequent development of atopic respiratory disease.

Abstract
Due to the close interdisciplinary work of surgeons, radiologists and oncologists, the prognosis for Wilms' tumor (the most common renal tumor in childhood) has been dramatically improved over the last few decades. The treatment of such tumors is currently carried out worldwide by two study groups, in North America the National Wilms' Tumor Study (NWTS) and in Europe the Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP). Here we present an overview of the current treatment results and discuss future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
