Abstract
Thirty-six, 7-d-old male lambs of similar weights were used in the current study to examine the effects of dietary amylose to amylopectin ratios (amylose/amylopectin) on gastrointestinal development in fattening lambs fed concentrates with different sources of starch (tapioca, wheat, maize, and pea) and amylose/amylopectin (0.12, 0.23, 0.24, and 0.48, respectively). The maize starch (MS) and wheat starch (WS) diets improved weight and volume of gastrointestinal. The pea starch diet significantly increased papillar height (P < 0.001), papillar surface area (P = 0.019), and density of papillae (P = 0.001) in the rumen. Additionally, the pea starch diet significantly enhanced villus height, crypt depth, and villus surface area and villus/crypt ratio (P < 0.05) in small intestine. Expressions of insulin-like growth factors I (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factors’ receptors (IGF-1R) significantly increased in the duodenum mucosa (P = 0.021, P = 0.006, respectively), jejunum mucosa (P = 0.002, P = 0.005, respectively), and ileum mucosa (P = 0.003, P < 0.01, respectively) in the pea starch diet group. The results of the present study show that MS and WS accelerated physical development of rumen and intestine compartments, whereas pea starch increased development of their some morphological parameters, possibly through enhanced expression of genes such as IGF-1 and IGF-1R in fattening lambs.

Abstract
In this study, we assessed the association between the EFEMP1 rs3791679 polymorphism and glioma risk in a Chinese Han population. A total of 94 glioma patients and 206 healthy controls who conformed to the inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited from Baogang Hospital between March 2012 and October 2014. The EFEMP1 rs3791679 gene polymorphism was assessed using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay and the results were statistically analyzed using SPSS Statistics 17.0. The results of unconditional logistic regression analysis revealed that the GG genotype of EFEMP1 rs3791679 was positively correlated with increased susceptibility to glioma (adjusted OR = 2.09, 95%CI = 1.21-7.81). Moreover, the GG genotype of EFEMP1 rs3791679 was correlated with higher risk of glioma compared to the AA+GA genotype (OR = 2.60, 95%CI = 1.08-6.28) in the regressive model. In conclusion, we report that the EFEMP1 rs3791679 polymorphism influences glioma susceptibility in the Chinese Han population.

Abstract
The fact that the phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway is one of the most frequently deregulated signaling networks has triggered intensive efforts in the development of PI3K pathway inhibitors. However, recent clinical trial data have shown only limited activity of PI3K inhibitors at tolerated doses. Thus, there is an urgent need to identify rational combination therapy to improve the efficacy of PI3K-targeted cancer treatment. In this study, we investigated if dietary compound ellagic acid (EA) could improve the therapeutic efficacy of PI3K inhibitor GDC-0941 in breast cancer. Specifically, using a panel of breast cancer cell lines, we showed that combined use of EA and GDC-0941 significantly inhibited cell growth under attached and detached conditions, blocked migration and invasion in vitro as well as tumor initiation and metastasis in vivo. Furthermore, we found that EA promoted apoptosis and further reduced AKT/mTOR activation in GDC-0941- treated breast cancer cells. Together, our data suggest that EA may be a safe and effective agent to boost the efficacy of PI3K-directed breast cancer therapy and that such drug combination may merit further clinical investigation.

Abstract
We describe a novel spectrometer designed for positron annihilation induced Auger electron spectroscopy employing a time-of-flight spectrometer. The spectrometer's new configuration enables us to implant monoenergetic positrons with kinetic energies as low as 1.5 eV on the sample while simultaneously allowing for the detection of electrons emitted from the sample surface at kinetic energies ranging from ∼500 eV to 0 eV. The spectrometer's unique characteristics made it possible to perform (a) first experiments demonstrating the direct transition of a positron from an unbound scattering state to a bound surface state and (b) the first experiments demonstrating that Auger electron spectra can be obtained down to 0 eV without the beam induced secondary electron background obscuring the low energy part of the spectra. Data are presented which show alternative means of estimating positron surface state binding energy and background-free Auger spectra.

Abstract
This paper explores the classification and visualisation utility of the self-organising map (SOM) method in the context of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, using gridded NCEP/NCAR geopotential height reanalysis for east Australia, together with multi-site meteorological and air quality data for Sydney from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage Air Quality Monitoring Network. A twice-daily synoptic classification has been derived for east Australia for the period of 1958-2012. The classification has not only reproduced the typical synoptic patterns previously identified in the literature but also provided an opportunity to visualise the subtle, non-linear change in the eastward-migrating synoptic systems influencing NSW (including Sydney). The summarisation of long-term, multi-site air quality/meteorological data from the Sydney basin on the SOM plane has identified a set of typical air pollution/meteorological spatial patterns in the region. Importantly, the examination of these patterns in relation to synoptic weather types has provided important visual insights into how local and synoptic meteorological conditions interact with each other and affect the variability of air quality in tandem. The study illustrates that while synoptic circulation types are influential, the within-type variability in mesoscale flows plays a critical role in determining local ozone levels in Sydney. These results indicate that the SOM can be a useful tool for assessing the impact of weather and climatic conditions on air quality in the regional airshed. This study further promotes the use of the SOM method in environmental research.

Abstract
Here, we investigated the effects of blocking chicken telomerase reverse transcriptase (chTERT) in MDCC-MSB1 cells, using small-hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) to interfere with gene expression. shRNAs specific to chTERT mRNA were designed, cloned into DNA plasmid vectors, and transfected into MDCC-MSB1 cells. The transfected chTERT RNAs were expressed by the RNA polymerase machinery of the MDCC-MSB1 cells. mRNA expression in transfected MDCC-MSB1 cells was detected using real-time PCR. After transfection, telomerase activity was monitored via a modified telomeric repeat amplification protocol assay, and cell cycle analysis was performed using a flow cytometer. At 72 h after transfection, chTERT expression was considerably reduced in cells transfected with shRNA; the highest inhibition rate was 89%. Compared with the control group, telomerase activity was significantly reduced and the cells failed to progress to S phase. shRNA effectively reduced telomerase activity and prohibited the transition of MDCC-MSB1 cells from G2/M to S phase.

Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the bioequivalence of clopidogrel in healthy Chinese volunteers after administration of a single oral dose. We administered a single oral dose of 75 mg clopidogrel (test and reference) to 32 healthy Chinese volunteers according to an open, randomized, crossover design. The concentration of clopidogrel acid (carboxylic metabolite of clopidogrel) in the plasma was determined using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Bioequivalence of the test and reference preparations were calculated using analysis of variance and one-sided t-test by using the DAS 2.0 software. The pharmacokinetic parameters of the test and reference preparations were as follows: peak plasma concentration (Cmax), 1351.101 ± 654.955 ng/mL and 1184.652 ± 607.713 ng/mL; area under the curve, 2642.017 ± 1093.848 ng·h/mL and 2780.666 ± 1283.100 ng·h/mL; and time to reach Cmax (Tmax), 0.789 ± 0.318 h and 0.953 ± 0.633 h, respectively. The relative bioavailability of the formulation was 101.7 ± 35.3%, which indicated that the test preparation was bioequivalent to the reference drug.

Abstract
ACCESSIBLE SUMMARY What is known on the subject? Several studies have measured the general public's knowledge and attitudes towards Alzheimer's disease; however, much of this work is based on western samples. Due to cultural differences, the western findings may be difficult to generalize to the Chinese general public. In addition, the few studies conducted in China were often restricted to a relatively narrow range of knowledge and attitudes. What this paper adds to existing knowledge? The general public had little knowledge of Alzheimer's disease, especially on the causes, symptoms and risk factors. In terms of attitudes, although the general public held positive attitudes towards persons with Alzheimer's disease, most of them were not sure whether or not to share a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease with the patient. In daily life, only a low proportion of people kept mentally active. What are the implications for practice? A popularization of a wide range of knowledge about Alzheimer's disease needs to be undertaken, especially focusing on persons with low educational level and emphasizing the causes, symptoms and risk factors. Besides, there is a significant need to draw up evidence-based dietary and lifestyle guidelines for Alzheimer's disease risk reduction. Moreover, health promotion agencies should identify priority groups for Alzheimer's disease risk reduction initiatives, especially those with lower income, a lower level of knowledge on Alzheimer's disease and with chronic diseases. AIM The purpose of this descriptive correlational cross-sectional study was to assess the current level of knowledge, attitudes and health behaviours regarding Alzheimer's disease among community residents in Tianjin, China and to identify factors related to these attributes. METHOD A convenience sample of 140 community-dwelling adults aged 20-75 years was selected to complete a researcher-designed questionnaire about Alzheimer's disease-related knowledge, attitudes and health behaviours. RESULTS The findings revealed that 15.7% of the participants knew the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease. With regard to attitude, 138 participants (98.6%) believed that people with Alzheimer's disease should not be discriminated against, and 55.7% were not sure whether to share a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease with the patient. In daily life, 28.6% of the participants pursued their interests and hobbies. A lower level of health behaviours was associated with lower income, presence of chronic diseases and a lower level of knowledge about Alzheimer's disease. DISCUSSION These findings provide a strong case for population-level risk reduction initiatives to be undertaken, especially among people with lower income, a lower level of knowledge on Alzheimer's disease and with chronic diseases.

Abstract
The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the correlations between the estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene polymorphisms PvuII (rs2234693T>C) and XbaI (rs9340799A>G) and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Case-control studies were screened and selected from a larger group of studies that were retrieved through a comprehensive search of scientific literature databases, which was complemented by manual searches. Data from studies selected were analyzed using the Comprehensive Meta-analysis 2.0 software. A total of 240 studies were initially retrieved and 10 studies were eventually included in the meta-analysis. These 10 case-control studies involved 7029 CVD patients (5001 myocardial infarction patients, 1223 coronary artery disease patients, 805 acute coronary syndromes patients) and 6901 healthy controls. We found no significant association between the PvuII (rs2234693T>C) and XbaI (rs9340799A>G) polymorphisms and CVD risk. We detected no significant associations under all genetic inheritance models tested, including the allele, dominant, homozygous, heterozygous, and recessive models, or for comparisons between the case group and control group (all P > 0.05). Our meta-analysis results strongly suggest that the ESR1 gene polymorphisms PvuII (rs2234693T>C) and XbaI (rs9340799A>G) are not associated with CVD risk.

Abstract
Here, we present a method that can improve the z-tracking accuracy of the recently invented TSUNAMI (Tracking of Single particles Using Nonlinear And Multiplexed Illumination) microscope. This method utilizes a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) to determine the particle's 3D position that maximizes the likelihood of the observed time-correlated photon count distribution. Our Monte Carlo simulations show that the MLE-based tracking scheme can improve the z-tracking accuracy of TSUNAMI microscope by 1.7 fold. In addition, MLE is also found to reduce the temporal correlation of the z-tracking error. Taking advantage of the smaller and less temporally correlated z-tracking error, we have precisely recovered the hybridization-melting kinetics of a DNA model system from thousands of short single-particle trajectories in silico. Our method can be generally applied to other 3D single-particle tracking techniques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Hyperphosphatemia is an independent predictor for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary intervention on reducing serum phosphate concentration in hyperphosphatemic PD patients. METHODS AND RESULTS In this single-center clinical trial, 97 prevalent PD patients with serum phosphate concentration ≥ 1.6 mmol/l were allocated to the intervention (n = 48) or control (n = 49) group and followed up for 1 year. In addition to phosphate binder (calcium carbonate) therapy, patients in the intervention group were intensively educated to reduce phosphate-rich food intake and improve cooking methods. While stable in the control group (1.97 ± 0.20 to 1.94 ± 0.35 mmol/l, p > 0.05), the serum phosphate concentration decreased significantly in the intervention group (1.98 ± 0.28 to 1.65 ± 0.33 mmol/l, p = 0.015) concurrently with the drop in dietary phosphate intake (13.03 ± 3.39 to 10.82 ± 3.00 mg/kg ideal body weight/day, p = 0.001). Moreover, after 6 months of intervention, fewer patients needed to use calcium carbonate (from 64.6% to 41.5%, p = 0.029) and the medicine dose reduced significantly (from 2.25 (0, 3.94) to 0 (0, 1.50) g/day, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our data indicated that intensive dietary intervention of reducing phosphate-rich food intake and improving cooking methods attenuated hyperphosphatemia in PD patients. It suggests that regular assessment of dietary phosphate intake and modification of diet recipe and cooking methods are essential for hyperphosphatemia treatment in PD patients in addition to phosphate binder therapy.

Abstract
The climbing vine, Vitis heyneana Roem. & Schult, is a member of the grape family endemic to Asia. Its fruits are used in wine production, and its roots, stems, and leaves can be used in medicinal materials. This plant is grown in Southwest China, as well as in India, Bhutan, and Nepal. Mulao Autonomous County in Guangxi Province is the only artificial cultivation area in China. During the summer of 2013, a panicle blight and leaf spot were detected on V. heyneana on four farms in Mulao Autonomous County. The symptoms were observed from the onset of florescence through fruit harvest. Brown lesions initially appeared at the base of a panicle and then extended to the whole panicle, finally causing the panicle to die and fruit to drop. When the disease developed on leaves, the symptom initially appeared as small dark brown circular spots, later enlarging into irregular spots (average diameter 6 mm) with a light brown center and dark brown rim. With severe disease, some individual leaves were affected by numerous spots, leading to premature senescence. Small sections of diseased tissue excised from 10 panicle and 10 leaf samples were plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 28°C. Fungal colonies developed, initially with abundant white aerial mycelium, which turned olivaceous gray after 5 days and formed black pycnidia after 25 days. The conidia were hyaline, ellipsoidal to fusiform, externally smooth, thin-walled, and nonseptate. Thirty conidia were measured; the dimensions were 12.0 to 17.5 × 4.0 to 6.0 μm. Morphological characteristics of the isolates were similar to the descriptions of Neofusicoccum parvum (3). The isolate MPT-1 was selected as a representative for molecular identification. Genomic DNA was extracted and used for PCR to amplify the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-α) gene, using primers ITS1/ITS4 and EF1-728F/EF1-986R, respectively. The obtained ITS sequence (GenBank Accession No. KJ599627) and EF1-α sequence (KM921768) showed >99% homology with several GenBank sequences of N. parvum. Morphological and molecular results confirmed the isolate as N. parvum. For pathogenicity tests, detached, young healthy panicles and leaves of V. heyneana were surface-sterilized, wounded by sterile needle, and inoculated with mycelial plugs (3 mm in diameter) of four N. parvum isolates. Ten panicles and 10 leaves were used for every isolate. Control panicles and leaves were treated with sterile PDA plugs. All the samples were placed in a humid chamber (RH 90%, 28°C, 12 h of light) for 3 days. Symptoms similar to those observed in the field developed on all panicles and leaves inoculated with N. parvum isolates. N. parvum was reisolated from all inoculated, symptomatic tissues. The controls remained symptomless. N. parvum has been reported to cause trunk canker on V. vinifera (2), dieback on Cupressus funebris (3), and a leaf spot on Myristica fragrans (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of N. parvum causing panicle blight and leaf spot on V. heyneana in China. Panicle blight caused a large number of fruits to drop and reduced the yield seriously. Some effective measures should be taken to control this disease. References: (1) V. Jayakumar et al. New Dis. Abstract
Utilizing low-cost, 2.2GHz modulation bandwidth, uncooled and standalone directly modulated VCSEL (DM-VCSEL)-based real-time dual-band optical OFDM (OOFDM) transmitters, aggregated 16.375Gb/s transmissions of OOFDM signals having bandwidths approximately 3.8 times higher than the VCSEL manufacturer-specified modulation bandwidths, are experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, over 200m OM2 MMF links based on intensity modulation and direct detection. The aggregated signal transmission capacities of the aforementioned links vary by just 8% for various OM2 MMFs ranging from 100m to 500m, and by just 10% over a 1GHz passband carrier frequency detuning range. Such dual-band OOFDM adaptability-induced excellent performance robustness and large passband frequency tunability can significantly relax the requirements on VCSEL modulation bandwidth for achieving specific transmission performances for cost-sensitive application scenarios such as data centers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pregnant women with chronic hypertension are at increased risk for complications. This study aims to investigate whether calcium channel blockers plus low dosage aspirin therapy can reduce the incidence of complications during pregnancy with chronic hypertension and improve the prognosis of neonates. MATERIALS AND METHODS From March 2011 to June 2013, 33 patients were selected to join this trial according to the chronic hypertension criteria set by the Preface Bulletin of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, (ACOG). Patients were administrated calcium channel blockers plus low-dosage aspirin and vitamin C. The statistic data of baseline and prognosis from the patients were retrospectively reviewed and compared. RESULTS Blood pressure of patients was controlled by these medicines with average systolic pressure from 146.3 to 148.7 mmHg and average diastolic pressure from 93.8 to 97.9 mmHg; 39.4% patients complicated mild preeclampsia; however, none of them developed severe preeclampsia or eclampsia, or complicate placental abruption. 30.3% patients delivered at preterm labour; 84.8% patients underwent cesarean section. The neonatal average weight was 3,008 ± 629.6 g, in which seven neonatal weights were less than 2,500 g. All of the neonatal Apgar scores were 9 to 10 at one to five minutes. Small for gestational age (SGA) occurred in five (15%). CONCLUSIONS Calcium channel blockers can improve the outcome of pregnancy women with chronic hypertension to avoid the occurrence of severe pregnancy complication or neonatal morbidity.

Abstract
In recent years the number of active controllable joints in electrically powered hand-prostheses has increased significantly. However, the control strategies for these devices in current clinical use are inadequate as they require separate and sequential control of each degree-of-freedom (DoF). In this study we systematically compare linear and nonlinear regression techniques for an independent, simultaneous and proportional myoelectric control of wrist movements with two DoF. These techniques include linear regression, mixture of linear experts (ME), multilayer-perceptron, and kernel ridge regression (KRR). They are investigated offline with electro-myographic signals acquired from ten able-bodied subjects and one person with congenital upper limb deficiency. The control accuracy is reported as a function of the number of electrodes and the amount and diversity of training data providing guidance for the requirements in clinical practice. The results showed that KRR, a nonparametric statistical learning method, outperformed the other methods. However, simple transformations in the feature space could linearize the problem, so that linear models could achieve similar performance as KRR at much lower computational costs. Especially ME, a physiologically inspired extension of linear regression represents a promising candidate for the next generation of prosthetic devices.
