Abstract
The domestic yak (Bos grunniens) is an iconic symbol of animal husbandry at high altitudes. Yaks exhibit unique external characteristics including long hair and large horns. However, hornless yaks can be found in different breeds and different populations. The hornless trait is also known as polled, and the POLL locus has been fine-mapped to chromosome 1 in cattle (Bos taurus), although the underlying genetic basis of the polled trait is still unclear in the yak. Thus, we performed an association study to identify the genetic polymorphisms responsible for the polled trait in the yak. Fifty polled Datong domestic yaks and 51 horned individuals were selected randomly from a huge herd and were used as the case and control groups respectively for the association analysis. Twelve genes located in the candidate region of the POLL locus in cattle were used as references to detect DNA polymorphisms related to yak polledness, which were analyzed by sequencing and a high-resolution melting test. We applied Fisher's exact test and haplotype analysis to show that a 147-kb segment that included three protein-coding genes C1H21orf62, GCFC1 and SYNJ1 was the most likely location of the POLL mutation in domestic yaks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We conducted a randomized, phase II, multicenter study to evaluate the anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mAb panitumumab (P) in combination with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with standard-dose capecitabine as neoadjuvant treatment for wild-type KRAS locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with wild-type KRAS, T3-4 and/or N+ LARC were randomly assigned to receive CRT with or without P (6 mg/kg). The primary end-point was pathological near-complete or complete tumor response (pNC/CR), defined as grade 3 (pNCR) or 4 (pCR) histological regression by Dworak classification (DC). RESULTS Forty of 68 patients were randomly assigned to P + CRT and 28 to CRT. pNC/CR was achieved in 21 patients (53%) treated with P + CRT [95% confidence interval (CI) 36%-69%] versus 9 patients (32%) treated with CRT alone (95% CI: 16%-52%). pCR was achieved in 4 (10%) and 5 (18%) patients, and pNCR in 17 (43%) and 4 (14%) patients. In immunohistochemical analysis, most DC 3 cells were not apoptotic. The most common grade ≥3 toxic effects in the P + CRT/CRT arm were diarrhea (10%/6%) and anastomotic leakage (15%/4%). CONCLUSIONS The addition of panitumumab to neoadjuvant CRT in patients with KRAS wild-type LARC resulted in a high pNC/CR rate, mostly grade 3 DC. The results of both treatment arms exceeded prespecified thresholds. The addition of panitumumab increased toxicity.

Abstract
We theoretically study field-induced domain wall motion in an electrically insulating ferromagnet with hard- and easy-axis anisotropies. Domain walls can propagate along a dissipationless wire through spin wave emission locked into the known soliton velocity at low fields. In the presence of damping, the usual Walker rigid-body propagation mode can become unstable for a magnetic field smaller than the Walker breakdown field.

Abstract
The spin-wave transportation through a transverse magnetic domain wall (DW) in a magnetic nanowire is studied. It is found that the spin wave passes through a DW without reflection. A magnon, the quantum of the spin wave, carries opposite spins on the two sides of the DW. As a result, there is a spin angular momentum transfer from the propagating magnons to the DW. This magnonic spin-transfer torque can efficiently drive a DW to propagate in the opposite direction to that of the spin wave.

Abstract
AIMS In the initial 26-week, double-blind, double-dummy assessment period of the DURATION-2 trial in patients with Type 2 diabetes on metformin, the once-weekly glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist exenatide once-weekly resulted in greater HbA(1c) improvement and weight reduction compared with maximum approved daily doses of sitagliptin or pioglitazone. This subsequent, 26-week, open-label, uncontrolled assessment period evaluated the safety and efficacy of (i) continued exenatide once-weekly treatment and (ii) switching from sitagliptin or pioglitazone to exenatide once-weekly. METHODS Randomised oral medications were discontinued and all patients received exenatide once-weekly. Of the 364 patients [original baseline HbA(1c) 8.5 ± 1.1% (70 mmol/mol), fasting plasma glucose 9.0 ± 2.5 mmol/l, weight 88 ± 20 kg) who continued into the open-label period, 319 patients (88%) completed 52 weeks. RESULTS Evaluable patients who received only exenatide once-weekly demonstrated significant 52-week improvements (least square mean ± se) in HbA(1c) (-1.6 ± 0.1%), fasting plasma glucose (-1.8 ± 0.3 mmol/l) and weight (-1.8 ± 0.5 kg). Evaluable patients who switched from sitagliptin to exenatide once-weekly demonstrated significant incremental improvements in HbA(1c) (-0.3 ± 0.1%), fasting plasma glucose (-0.7 ± 0.2 mmol/l) and weight (-1.1 ± 0.3 kg). Patients who switched from pioglitazone to exenatide once-weekly maintained HbA(1c) and fasting plasma glucose improvements (week 52: -1.6 ± 0.1%, -1.7 ± 0.3 mmol/l), with significant weight reduction (-3.0 ± 0.3 kg). Exenatide once-weekly was generally well tolerated and adverse events were predominantly mild or moderate in intensity. Nausea was the most frequent adverse event in this assessment period (intent-to-treat: exenatide once-weekly-only 5%; sitagliptin→exenatide once-weekly 11%; pioglitazone→exenatide once-weekly 10%). No major hypoglycaemia was observed. CONCLUSIONS Patients who switched to once-weekly exenatide from daily sitagliptin or pioglitazone had improved or sustained glycaemic control, with weight loss.

Abstract
PCR and SYBR Green I real-time PCR techniques were applied to the rapid detection of Vibrio metschnikovii by designing primers based on infC (initiation factor 3) gene sequence. The specificity, sensitivity, and practical applications of the methods have been also analyzed. The methods showed high detecting specificity with no cross amplifications of other closely related and nonrelated species; they provide a simple and rapid tool for V. metschnikovii detection with high sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Omentin has recently been characterized as a potent insulin-sensitizing adipokine, but its pathophysiologic roles in humans remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVE To investigate the change of fasting serum omentin levels and evaluate the relationship of omentin with adiponectin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. DESIGN 35 patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2DM), 35 patients with impaired glucose regulation (IGT) and 35 patients with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) participated in this study. Fasting serum omentin and adiponectin levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relationship between serum omentin, serum adiponectin levels and metabolic parameters was also analyzed. RESULTS Fasting serum omentin levels were significantly lower in T2DM and IGT groups than in NGT group (16.75±1.71 vs. 18.62±1.22 vs. 24.60±1.43 ng/ml, all P<0.01). Obesity subjects had significantly lower serum omentin levels than normal body weight subjects ( P<0.01 or P<0.05). Female subjects had moderately higher fasting serum omentin levels than male subjects. Fasting serum adiponectin levels showed a similar variation trend to omentin in T2DM and NGT groups, obesity and normal body weight subjects, female and male subjects. Fasting serum omentin levels were negatively correlated with HOMA-IR and positively correlated with adiponectin. Moreover, HOMA-IR and adiponectin were the independently predictors of fasting serum omentin levels. CONCLUSIONS Serum omentin levels possibly play an important role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and diabetes. More importantly, there is such a close connection between serum omentin and adiponectin levels that regulation of omentin may be dependent on adiponectin.

Abstract
Abstract. The insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF1) is a peptide growth factor that exerts mitogenic and metabolic activities, which are regulators of growth, survival and cell differentiation in a number of cell and tissue types. To elicit its effects, IGF1 must bind its receptors. The insulinlike growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) is similar to insulin receptor (INSR) and it mediates the growth-promoting effect of IGF1. The IGF1R gene, therefore, was selected as a biological candidate gene for growth, body composition, metabolic, and skeletal traits in animals (Rothschild et al. 1997). By now, no polymorphism of yak (Bos grunniensL) IGF1R gene is reported. In the present paper, the partial exon 1 region of IGF1R was screened to detect the SNPs in Chinese yak breeds. Associations of SNP of IGF1R with growth traits were analysed.

Abstract
Comprehensive analysis of the interactions between 10 mature proteins of Papaya ringspot virus type P (PRSV-P) was carried out based on a yeast two-hybrid system assay (YTHS). We detected 6 interactions between different viral proteins (VPg-P1, VPg-P3, VPg-CI, VPg-CP, NIaPro-CI, and NIb-P3) and 4 self-interactions (HC-Pro, VPg, NIaPro, and CP). These interactions did not show the same directionality as corresponding interactions detected in other potyviruses and consequently, a protein interaction matrix displayed different patterns.
