Model-independent measurement of the W-boson helicity in top-quark decays at D0. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2008; 100:062004. Abstract
We present the first model-independent measurement of the helicity of W bosons produced in top quark decays, based on a 1 fb(-1) sample of candidate tt events in the dilepton and lepton plus jets channels collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp Collider. We reconstruct the angle theta(*) between the momenta of the down-type fermion and the top quark in the W boson rest frame for each top quark decay. A fit of the resulting costheta(*) distribution finds that the fraction of longitudinal W bosons f(0)=0.425+/-0.166(stat)+/-0.102(syst) and the fraction of right-handed W bosons f(+)=0.119+/-0.090(stat)+/-0.053(syst), which is consistent at the 30% C.L. with the standard model.

Search for W' bosons decaying to an electron and a neutrino with the D0 detector. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2008; 100:031804. Abstract
This Letter describes the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson W' decaying into an electron and a neutrino. The data were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp[over] Collider at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb(-1). Lacking any significant excess in the data in comparison with known processes, an upper limit is set on sigma_(W') x B(W')-->e nu), and a W' boson with mass below 1.00 TeV can be excluded at the 95% C.L., assuming standard-model-like couplings to fermions. This result significantly improves upon previous limits and is the most stringent to date.

Study of the decay Bs(0)-->Ds(*)Ds(*). PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 99:241801. Abstract
We report a study of the decay Bs(0)-->Ds(*)Ds(*) using a data sample corresponding to 1.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment in 2002-2006 during run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. One Ds(*) meson was partially reconstructed in the decay Ds-->phi mu nu, and the other Ds(*) meson was identified using the decay Ds-->phi pi where no attempt was made to distinguish Ds and Ds(*) states. For the branching fraction Br(Bs(0)-->Ds(*)Ds(*)) we obtain a 90% C.L. range [0.002,0.080] and central value 0.039(-0.017)(+0.019)(stat)(-0.015)(+0.016)(syst). This was subsequently used to make the most precise estimate of the width difference DeltaGamma(s)CP in the Bs(0)-Bs(0) system: DeltaGamma(s)CP/Gamma(s)=0.079(-0.035)(+0.038)(stat)(-0.030)(+0.031)(syst).

Search for production of single top quarks via tcg and tug flavor-changing-neutral-current couplings. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 99:191802. Abstract
We search for the production of single top quarks via flavor-changing-neutral-current couplings of a gluon to the top quark and a charm (c) or up (u) quark. We analyze 230 pb{-1} of lepton+jets data from pp[over] collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe no significant deviation from standard model predictions, and hence set upper limits on the anomalous coupling parameters kappa{g}{c}/Lambda and kappa{g}{u}/Lambda, where kappa{g} define the strength of tcg and tug couplings, and Lambda defines the scale of new physics. The limits at 95% C.L. are kappa{g}{c}/Lambda<0.15 TeV-1 and kappa{g}{u}/Lambda<0.037 TeV-1.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the Lambda(b)(0) lifetime using a sample corresponding to 1.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment in 2002-2006 during run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The Lambda(b)(0) baryon is reconstructed via the decay Lambda(b)(0)-->micronuLambda(c)(+)X. Using 4437+/-329 signal candidates, we measure the Lambda(b)(0) lifetime to be tau(Lambda(b)(0))=1.290(-0.110)(+0.119)(stat)(-0.091)(+0.087)(syst) ps, which is among the most precise measurements in semileptonic Lambda(b)(0) decays. This result is in good agreement with the world average value.

Abstract
This Letter presents the first strong evidence for the resolution of the excited B mesons B(1) and B(2)* as two separate states in fully reconstructed decays to B(+)(*)pi(-). The mass of B(1) is measured to be 5720.6+/-2.4+/-1.4 MeV/c(2) and the mass difference DeltaM between B(2)* and B(1) is 26.2+/-3.1+/-0.9 MeV/c;{2}, giving the mass of the B(2)* as 5746.8+/-2.4+/-1.7 MeV/c(2). The production rate for B(1) and B(2)* mesons is determined to be a fraction (13.9+/-1.9+/-3.2)% of the production rate of the B+ meson.

Measurement of the Lambda b lifetime in the exclusive decay Lambda b --> J/psi Lambda. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 99:142001. Abstract
We have measured the Lambda b lifetime using the exclusive decay Lambda b --> J/psi Lambda, based on 1.2 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector during 2002-2006. From 171 reconstructed Lambda b decays, where the J/psi and Lambda are identified via the decays J/psi --> mu+ mu- and Lambda --> ppi, we measured the Lambda b lifetime to be tau(Lambda b)=1.218 (+0.130)/(-0.115) (stat) +/- 0.042(syst) ps. We also measured the B0 lifetime in the decay B0 --> J/psi(mu+ mu-)K(0)/(S)(pi+ pi-) to be tau(B0)=1.501 (+0.078)/(-0.074) (stat) +/- 0.050(syst) ps, yielding a lifetime ratio of tau(Lambda b)/tau(B0)=0.811 (+0.096)/(-0.087) (stat) +/- 0.034(syst).

Abstract
Long-lived, heavy particles are predicted in a number of models beyond the standard model of particle physics. We present the first direct search for such particles' decays, occurring up to 100 h after their production and not synchronized with an accelerator bunch crossing. We apply the analysis to the gluino (g), predicted in split supersymmetry, which after hadronization can become charged and lose enough momentum through ionization to come to rest in dense particle detectors. Approximately 410 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root(s) = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider are analyzed in search of such "stopped gluinos" decaying into a gluon and a neutralino (chi(1)(0)). Limits are placed on the (gluino cross section) x (probability to stop) x [BR(g --> g chi(1)(0))] as a function of the gluino and chi(1)(0) masses, for gluino lifetimes from 30 micros-100 h.

Histone deacetylase inhibitor apicidin downregulates DNA methyltransferase 1 expression and induces repressive histone modifications via recruitment of corepressor complex to promoter region in human cervix cancer cells. Abstract
Dysregulation of DNA methyltransferase (DNMT)1 expression is associated with cellular transformation, and inhibition of DNMT1 exerts antitumorigenic effects. Here, we report that DNMT1 abnormally expressed in HeLa cells is downregulated by a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor apicidin, which is correlated with induction of repressive histone modifications on the promoter site. Apicidin selectively represses the expression of DNMT1 among DNMTs in HeLa cells, independent of cell cycle arrest at G0/G1. Furthermore, apicidin causes a significant reduction in the recruitment of RNA polymerase II into the promoter. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis shows that even though apicidin causes global hyperacetylation of histone H3 and H4, localized deacetylation of histone H3 and H4 occurs at the E2F binding site, which is accompanied by the recruitment of pRB and the replacement of P/CAF with HDAC1 into the sites. In addition, K4-trimethylated H3 on nucleosomes associated with the transcriptional start site is depleted following apicidin treatment, whereas repressive markers, K9- and K27-trimethylation of H3 are enriched on the site. The downregulation of DNMT1 expression seems to require de novo protein synthesis, because the apicidin effect is antagonized by cycloheximide treatment. Moreover, knock down of DNMT1 with siRNA induces the apoptosis of HeLa cells, indicating that downregulation of DNMT1 might be a good strategy for therapeutics of human cervix cancer. Collectively, our findings will provide a mechanistic rationale for the use of HDAC inhibitors in cancer therapeutics.

Abstract
We report on a search for charge-1/3 third-generation leptoquarks (LQ) produced in pp collisions at square root s =1.96 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Third-generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to a tau neutrino and a b quark with branching fraction B. We place upper limits on sigma(pp --> LQLQ)B2 as a function of the leptoquark mass M(LQ). Assuming B=1, we exclude at the 95% confidence level third-generation scalar leptoquarks with M(LQ)<229 GeV.

Direct observation of the strange b baryon Xib-. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 99:052001. Abstract
We report the first direct observation of the strange b baryon Xi(b)- (Xi(b)+). We reconstruct the decay Xi(b)- -->J/psiXi-, with J/psi-->mu+mu-, and Xi--->Lambdapi--->ppi-pi- in pp collisions at square root of s =1.96 TeV. Using 1.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector, we observe 15.2 +/- 4.4(stat)(-0.4)(+1.9)(syst) Xi(b)- candidates at a mass of 5.774 +/- 0.011(stat) +/- 0.015(syst) GeV. The significance of the observed signal is 5.5 sigma, equivalent to a probability of 3.3 x 10(-8) of it arising from a background fluctuation. Normalizing to the decay Lambda(b)-->J/psiLambda, we measure the relative rate sigma(Xi(b-) x B(Xi)b})- -->J/psiXi-)/sigma(Lambda(b)) x B(Lambda(b)-->J/psiLambda) = 0.28+/-0.09(stat)(-0.08)(+0.09)(syst).

Search for techniparticles in e+jets events at D0. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 98:221801. Abstract
We search for the technicolor process pp-->rhoT/omegaT-->WpiT in events containing one electron and two jets, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 390 pb(-1), recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Technicolor predicts that technipions pi(T) decay dominantly into bb, bc, or bc, depending on their charge. In these events b and c quarks are identified by their secondary decay vertices within jets. Two analysis methods based on topological variables are presented. Since no excess above the standard model prediction was found, the result is presented as an exclusion in the pi(T) vs rho(T) mass plane for a given set of model parameters.

Abstract
The D0 Collaboration presents first evidence for the production of single top quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron pp[over ] collider. Using a 0.9 fb(-1) dataset, we apply a multivariate analysis to separate signal from background and measure sigma(pp[over ]-->tb+X,tqb+X)=4.9+/-1.4 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of a signal is 0.035%, corresponding to a 3.4 standard deviation significance. We use the cross section measurement to directly determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element that describes the Wtb coupling and find 0.68<|V(tb)|</=1 at 95% C.L. within the standard model.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to find any specific genetic defect occurring frequently in bilateral breast cancer by examining the genetic changes of each chromosome using comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH). CGH was conducted for 36 breast cancer tissues taken from patients treated with surgery for bilateral breast cancer. Tumour and control DNAs were hybridised to metaphase chromosome with differential staining with fluorescein and rhodamine-dUTP. An average rate of green (DNA of tumour cell) against red (DNA of a normal peripheral blood lymphocyte) was calculated in these captured metaphase chromosomes and a ratio of more than 1.17 was defined as an acquisition, less than 0.85 as a loss and, finally, more than 2 as amplification. Twenty-six out of 36 cases (72.2%) showed a change in the number of DNA copies by CGH in one or more regions of gene. On average, 5.3 alterations for each chromosome (range, 1-14) were found, and gain was present more than loss at a ratio of 1.3:1. Loci that showed amplification were X, 17q, Xq, 8q, 14q11-21 and 17q22-qter. The locus showing the most gain was the X chromosome, which was observed in 15 (57.7%) out of 26 cases. Loss was most frequently observed in the short arm of chromosome 8. The concordance of genetic transformation of primary cancer and secondary cancer in bilateral breast cancer was an average of 18.7% in synchronous and 10.7% in metachronous cancer, showing higher similarity in synchronous breast cancer.

Abstract
We have performed the first direct measurement of the time-integrated flavor untagged charge asymmetry in semileptonic Bs0 decays ASLs,unt by comparing the decay rate of Bs0-->micro+Ds-nuX, where Ds- -->phipi- and phi-->K+K-, with the charge-conjugate Bs0 decay rate. This sample was selected from 1.3 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment in run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We obtain ASLs,unt=[1.23+/-0.97(stat)+/-0.17(syst)]x10(-2). Assuming that Deltam(s)/Gamma(s)>>1, this result can be translated into a measurement of the CP-violating phase in Bs0 mixing: DeltaGamma(s)/Deltam(s)tanphi(s)=[2.45+/-1.93(stat)+/-0.35(syst)]x10(-2).

Abstract
From an analysis of the decay Bs0-->J/psi phi, we obtain the width difference between the light and heavy mass eigenstates DeltaGamma identical with (GammaL-GammaH)=0.17+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.02(syst) ps-1 and the CP-violating phase phis=-0.79+/-0.56(stat)(-0.01)(+0.14)(syst). Under the hypothesis of no CP violation (phis identical with 0), we obtain 1/Gamma=tau(Bs0)=1.52+/-0.08(stat)(-0.03)(+0.01)(syst) ps and DeltaGamma=0.12(-0.10)(+0.08)(stat)+/-0.02(syst) ps-1. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.1 fb-1 accumulated with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This is the first direct measurement of the CP-violating mixing phase in the Bs0 system.

Abstract
We present the first experimental discrimination between the 2e/3 and 4e/3 top quark electric charge scenarios, using top quark pairs (tt) produced in pp collisions at (square root) s = 1.96 TeV by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We use 370 pb;{-1} of data collected by the D0 experiment and select events with at least one high transverse momentum electron or muon, high transverse energy imbalance, and four or more jets. We discriminate between b- and b-quark jets by using the charge and momenta of tracks within the jet cones. The data are consistent with the expected electric charge, |q|=2e/3. We exclude, at the 92% C.L., that the sample is solely due to the production of exotic quark pairs QQ with |q|=4e/3. We place an upper limit on the fraction of QQ pairs rho<0.80 at the 90% C.L.

Abstract
In order to extract only the alpha activity related EEG signals of the brain, we have applied constrained Independent Component Analysis (cICA), a new extension of ICA in which some a priori knowledge of alpha activity is utilized to extract desired components. Its performance has been compared to that of conventional band-pass filtering via the scalp power maps of alpha activity. The preliminary results show that cICA-extracted alpha signals produce the alpha power maps which spatially match the activated regions of the brain mapped using fMRI more closely than those from the band-pass filtered alpha EEG signals. The use of cICA might provide a more effective means of extracting EEG alpha activity of the brain.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the Bs(0) lifetime in the semileptonic decay channel Bs(0) --> Ds- mu+ nuX (and its charge conjugate), using approximately 0.4 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector during 2002-2004. Using 5176 reconstructed Ds- mu+ signal events, we have measured the Bs(0) lifetime to be tau(Bs(0))=1.398+/-0.044(stat)(-0.025)(+0.028)(syst) ps. This is the most precise measurement of the Bs(0) lifetime to date.

Abstract
We stably transfected early passage chondrocytes with an anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 gene in vitro using a retrovirus vector. Samples of articular cartilage were obtained from 11 patients with a mean age of 69 years (61 to 75) who were undergoing total knee replacement for osteoarthritis. The Bcl-2-gene-transfected chondrocytes were compared with non-transfected and lac-Z-gene-transfected chondrocytes, both of which were used as controls. All three groups of cultured chondrocytes were incubated with nitric oxide (NO) for ten days. Using the Trypan Blue exclusion assay, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and flow cytometric analysis, we found that the number of apoptotic chondrocytes was significantly higher in the non-transfected and lac-Z-transfected groups than in the Bcl-2-transfected group (p < 0.05). The Bcl-2-transfected chondrocytes were protected from NO-induced impairment of proteoglycan synthesis. We conclude that NO-induced chondrocyte death involves a mechanism which appears to be subject to regulation by an anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 gene. Therefore, Bcl-2 gene therapy may prove to be of therapeutic value in protecting human articular chondrocytes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether there is a relationship between aortic plaques and intracranial (IC) atherosclerosis. METHODS We reviewed 922 patients with stroke who had both transesophageal echocardiography and cerebral angiography. The plaques of these patients were classified as either complex aortic plaques (CAP), which protruded > or =4 mm or were present as mobile lesions in the proximal aorta, or simple aortic plaques (SAP), which were <4 mm or present in the descending aorta. Cerebral artery atherosclerosis was classified as either an IC or extracranial (EC) atherosclerosis. RESULTS Among the 922 patients, we found aortic plaques in 237 patients (26%). There were 111 (47%) patients of SAP, 74 (31%) patients with CAP, and 52 (22%) patients that had both SAP and CAP. Angiography showed IC or EC atherosclerosis in 511 patients (55%). The presence of aortic plaques was significantly associated with IC or EC atherosclerosis. The significance appeared to be due to the strong association between the presence of SAP and IC atherosclerosis (51% SAP vs 35% no plaques; odds ratio = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.17 to 3.21). In the multiple logistic regression analysis, SAP were independent predictors of IC atherosclerosis CONCLUSIONS The presence of simple aortic plaques may be a marker of advanced vascular disease. Detection of simple aortic plaques during transesophageal echocardiography may have clinical implications because patients with these plaques frequently had concomitant intracranial atherosclerosis, a risk factor for stroke.

Abstract
Vascular tumours of the breast are rare and most can be classified as either angiosarcomas or haemangiomas. Cavernous haemangiomas are the most common form of mammary haemangioma. We describe a case with unilateral whole breast involvement without associated calcifications, studied with mammography, ultrasound and MRI.

Abstract
A search for direct production of scalar bottom quarks (b) is performed with 310 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment in pp collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The topology analyzed consists of two b jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum due to undetected neutralinos (chi(1)0), with chi(1)0 assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. We find the data consistent with standard model expectations, and set a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the (m(b), m(chi(1)0)) mass plane, improving significantly upon the results from run I of the Tevatron.
