Abstract
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) promotes survival and differentiation of neural cells in the central and peripheral nervous systems. BDNF has been detected in plasma, but its source has not yet been established. Expression of BDNF mRNA has been identified in the submandibular glands when male rats are exposed to acute immobilization stress. In the present study, we investigated whether plasma BDNF is influenced by the submandibular glands in this model. Acute immobilization stress for 60 min significantly increased the level of plasma BDNF. However, plasma BDNF elevation was markedly suppressed in bilaterally sialoadenectomized rats. There were no significant differences between stressed (60 min) and non-stressed rats with respect to the BDNF mRNA expression in the hippocampus, heart, lung, liver, pancreas, or spleen, as determined by real-time polymerase chain-reaction. These findings suggest that the submandibular glands may be the primary source of plasma BDNF in conditions of acute immobilization stress.

Abstract
We report an experimental investigation of the magnetic field effect (MFE) in polymer bulk heterojunction devices at temperatures below 10 K using photocarrier extraction by linearly increasing voltages. The examined devices were composed of an active layer of poly(3-hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester. In the experiments, the delay time (td) dependence of the MFE was investigated in detail. For td < 80 μs, a positive MFE was observed in the field region B < 0.1 T and a negative MFE was observed for B > 0.2 T. For td > 8 ms, only a positive MFE proportional to B2 was observed. For the photocurrent pulse detected immediately after light irradiation, the MFE was negligibly small. In a high magnetic field of 15 T, a significant MFE exceeding 80% was observed at 1.8 K for td = 800 ms. We discuss the results based on a model of triplet-singlet (or singlet-triplet) conversion in the magnetic field and estimate the exchange integral for the charge-transfer exciton in this photovoltaic cell.

Utility of a Multiparametric Quantitative MRI Model That Assesses Myelin and Edema for Evaluating Plaques, Periplaque White Matter, and Normal-Appearing White Matter in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: A Feasibility Study. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 2016; 38:237-242. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE T1 and T2 values and proton density can now be quantified on the basis of a single MR acquisition. The myelin and edema in a voxel can also be estimated from these values. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a multiparametric quantitative MR imaging model that assesses myelin and edema for characterizing plaques, periplaque white matter, and normal-appearing white matter in patients with MS. MATERIALS AND METHODS We examined 3T quantitative MR imaging data from 21 patients with MS. The myelin partial volume, excess parenchymal water partial volume, the inverse of T1 and transverse T2 relaxation times (R1, R2), and proton density were compared among plaques, periplaque white matter, and normal-appearing white matter. RESULTS All metrics differed significantly across the 3 groups (P < .001). Those in plaques differed most from those in normal-appearing white matter. The percentage changes of the metrics in plaques and periplaque white matter relative to normal-appearing white matter were significantly more different from zero for myelin partial volume (mean, -61.59 ± 20.28% [plaque relative to normal-appearing white matter], and mean, -10.51 ± 11.41% [periplaque white matter relative to normal-appearing white matter]), and excess parenchymal water partial volume (13.82 × 103 ± 49.47 × 103% and 51.33 × 102 ± 155.31 × 102%) than for R1 (-35.23 ± 13.93% and -6.08 ± 8.66%), R2 (-21.06 ± 11.39% and -4.79 ± 6.79%), and proton density (23.37 ± 10.30% and 3.37 ± 4.24%). CONCLUSIONS Multiparametric quantitative MR imaging captures white matter damage in MS. Myelin partial volume and excess parenchymal water partial volume are more sensitive to the MS disease process than R1, R2, and proton density.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The number of reported cases of allergic reactions to sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum) has increased significantly. The specific IgE tests and skin prick tests presently available for diagnosis of sesame allergy are all based on crude sesame extract and are limited by their low clinical specificity. Thus, oral food challenge (OFC) is still the gold standard in the diagnosis. OBJECTIVE The aim was to identify the allergen components useful to diagnose sesame-allergic children with the goal to reduce the number of OFCs needed. METHODS Ninety-two sesame-sensitized children were consecutively enrolled and diagnosed based on OFC or convincing history. Specific IgE to purified native 11S globulin (nSes i 11S), 7S globulin (nSes i 7S), 2S albumin (nSes i 2S), and two recombinant 2S albumins (rSes i 1 and rSes i 2) was measured by ELISA and/or ImmunoCAP (rSes i 1/streptavidin application). RESULTS Based on area under curve (AUC) values from receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, rSes i 1 was shown to have the best diagnostic performance of the allergen components in ELISA. The experimental rSes i 1 ImmunoCAP test had larger AUC (0.891; 95% CI, 0.826-0.955) compared to the commercially available sesame ImmunoCAP (0.697; 95% CI, 0.589-0.805). The clinical sensitivity and specificity for the rSes i 1 ImmunoCAP test at optimal cut-off (3.96 kUA /L) were 86.1% and 85.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Sensitization to Ses i 1 is strongly associated with clinical sesame allergy. Measurement of specific IgE to rSes i 1 could reduce the numbers of OFCs needed.

Chemoembolization for Hepatocellular Carcinoma via the Inferior Pancreaticoduodenal Artery in Patients with Celiac Artery Stenosis. Acta Radiol 2016. Abstract
Twenty-one patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accompanied by extensive celiac artery stenosis or obstruction were treated by chemoembolization via the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (IPDA). The tip of the catheter was placed in the arteries in front of the confluence with the proper hepatic artery in 12 patients (group A: the proximal portion of the IPDA in 10, and common hepatic artery in 2), and in the proper hepatic artery or branches of it (group B) in 9 using a coaxial catheter system. Transient hyperamylasemia was observed in 10 of the 12 patients in group A and in 3 of the 9 patients in group B after chemoembolization. Splenic infarction developed in 8 patients in group A and in none in group B. Intrapancreatic fluid collection was present in 2 patients in group A following chemoembolization. No fatal complications were encountered. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates of the 10 patients in group A treated by only chemoembolization were 90, 57, and 23%, respectively (mean survival 780 days). The 1- and 2-year survival rates of 9 patients in group B were 85.8 and 85.8% (mean 879 days), respectively. Considering the severity of complications and the survival rates in groups A and B, chemoembolization by superselective catheterization into the hepatic artery via the IPDA is the treatment of choice. However, chemoembolization from the arteries in front of the confluence with the proper hepatic artery seems to be acceptable in cases of hypervascular HCC which fail to be superselectively catheterized.

A potential contribution of antimicrobial peptide LL-37 to tissue fibrosis and vasculopathy in systemic sclerosis. Br J Dermatol 2016; 175:1195-1203. Abstract
BACKGROUND LL-37 is an antimicrobial peptide with pleiotropic effects on the immune system, angiogenesis and tissue remodelling. These are cardinal pathological events in systemic sclerosis (SSc). OBJECTIVES To elucidate the potential role of LL-37 in SSc. METHODS The expression of target molecules was evaluated by immunostaining and quantitative reverse-transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction in human and murine skin. The mechanisms regulating LL-37 expression in endothelial cells were examined by gene silencing and chromatin immunoprecipitation. Serum LL-37 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS In SSc lesional skin, LL-37 expression was increased in dermal fibroblasts, perivascular inflammatory cells, keratinocytes and, particularly, dermal small vessels. Expression positively correlated with interferon-α expression, possibly reflecting LL-37-dependent induction of interferon-α. In SSc animal models, bleomycin-treated skin exhibited the expression pattern of CRAMP, a murine homologue of LL-37, similar to that of LL-37 in SSc lesional skin. Furthermore, Fli1+/- mice showed upregulated expression of CRAMP in dermal small vessels. Fli1 binding to the CAMP (LL-37 gene) promoter and Fli1 deficiency-dependent induction of LL-37 were also confirmed in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells. In the analysis of sera, patients with SSc had serum LL-37 levels significantly higher than in healthy controls. Furthermore, serum LL-37 levels positively correlated with skin score and the activity of alveolitis and were significantly elevated in patients with digital ulcers compared with those without. CONCLUSIONS LL-37 upregulation, induced by Fli1 deficiency at least in endothelial cells, potentially contributes to the development of skin sclerosis, interstitial lung disease and digital ulcers in SSc.

Emergent Embolization for Control of Massive Hemorrhage from a Splanchnic Artery with a New Coaxial Catheter System. Acta Radiol 2016. Abstract
Emergent superselective embolization with a 3.0 F (1 mm) coaxial catheter and a steerable guidewire was performed in 27 patients with massive hemorrhage from a small-caliber splanchnic artery. Eight patients had intraperitoneal hemorrhage, 3 had hemobilia, 9 had gastric hemorrhage, and 7 had intestinal hemorrhage. Out of 27 patients, 7 had hemorrhage from a splanchnic artery pseudoaneurysm. Complete cessation of bleeding was obtained in all patients initially, but in 3 patients gastric hemorrhage recurred later. Otherwise, there was no rebleeding nor any major complication such as marked infarction of tissue or misplacement of embolic materials. This coaxial catheter system was highly reliable for achieving superselective catheterization in small-caliber arteries, minimizing the volume of infarcted tissue and allowing maximal preservation of splanchnic organic function. We conclude that this system represents a major advance in interventional radiology.

A procedure is indicated to estimate first-passage-time p.d.f.'s through varying boundaries for a class of diffusion processes that can be transformed into the Wiener process by rather general transformations. Abstract
We prove that for a diffusion process the first-passage-time p.d.f. through a continuous-time function with bounded derivative satisfies a Volterra integral equation of the second kind whose kernel and right-hand term are probability currents. For the case of the standard Wiener process this equation is solved in closed form not only for the class of boundaries already introduced by Park and Paranjape [15] but also for all boundaries of the type S(I) = a + bt ‘/p (p ∼ 2, a, b E ∼) for which no explicit analytical results have previously been available.

Abstract
We present a rare case of multiple spinal perimedullary arteriovenous fistulae associated with the Parkes-Weber (PW) syndrome. A 31-year-old male known to have the PW syndrome involving the left leg since birth, presented with a 7-month-history of progressive myelopathy of the lower extremities and dysfunction of the bladder and bowel. Myelography demonstrated dilated intradural vessels. Angiography demonstrated two distinct single hole perimedullary arteriovenous fistulae near the conus at two different metameres. They were supplied by the left posterior spinal artery. The patient was treated by transarterial embolisation using polyvinyl alcohol particles, which resulted in venous side occlusion of the fistulae. After the treatment, the patient developed transient worsening of the spasticity of the lower extremities, and was treated by heparinization. After heparinization, the patient partially recovered from the pre-embolisation status of his myelopathy. The follow-up angiogram one year after the embolisation demonstrated persistent obliteration of both fistulae. At long-term follow-up, the patient can ambulate without assistance and work as a farmer.

Abstract
Objective: To review series of cases in which surgery was used to treat popliteal vein entrapment (PVE). Methods: Between 1984 and 2001, 11 patients (all women; mean age 27.6 years; 14 limbs) underwent surgery for PVE causing calf ache, swelling, and tenderness of the popliteal fossa. Preoperative evidence of PVE included positive results on a passive dorsi-flexion test, compression of the popliteal vein on ascending venography, hypertrophied or aberrant muscle in the popliteal fossa on CT scanning and elevated below-knee venous pressure. The medial or third head of the gastrocnemius muscle was partly or totally resected under the guidance of intraoperative venous pressure measurement and venography. Results: No operative complications occurred. During 3-10 years of follow-up, 57% of limbs were symptom-free, 21% were improved and 21% were unchanged. Conclusion: Treatment of PVE by resection of muscle fibres under the guidance of objective intraoperative assessments was effective in most patients.

Centrality-Dependent Modification of Jet-Production Rates in Deuteron-Gold Collisions at √[s(NN)]=200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2016; 116:122301. Abstract
Jet production rates are measured in p+p and d+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Jets are reconstructed using the R=0.3 anti-k_{t} algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multiwire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum (p_{T}) spectra are corrected for the detector response. Spectra are reported for jets with 12<p_{T}<50 GeV/c, within a pseudorapidity acceptance of |η|<0.3. The nuclear-modification factor (R_{dAu}) values for 0%-100% d+Au events are found to be consistent with unity, constraining the role of initial state effects on jet production. However, the centrality-selected R_{dAu} values and central-to-peripheral ratios (R_{CP}) show large, p_{T}-dependent deviations from unity, challenging the conventional models that relate hard-process rates and soft-particle production in collisions involving nuclei.

Abstract
The p.Asp211Gly homozygous HYLS1 mutation is so far known to cause only hydrolethalus syndrome, a lethal malformation syndrome. We report living sibling patients with a homozygous no-stop mutation in exon 4 of HYLS1, NM_145014.2:c.900A>C (p.Ter300TyrextTer11) in the second decade of life. The proband has Joubert syndrome (JS). The younger brother also has JS and an enlarged posterior fossa that was initially diagnosed as Dandy-Walker malformation. The present mutation is unique as it affects the stop codon. The product protein HYLS1 plays an essential role in the formation of the primary cilium. This report provides insight into the spectrum of disorders involving midline brain defects closely related to cilium dysfunction or ciliopathy.

Impact of a β-blocker and/or acute hemodilution on cerebral oxygenation during apneic hypoxia. Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 2016; 60:343-53. Abstract
BACKGROUND β-blockers reduce the tolerance for acute hemodilution by decreasing cerebral oxygenation and may contribute to the incidence of stroke. We hypothesized that β-blockers also increase the risk for cerebral hypoxia when apneic hypoxia occurs. METHODS After induction of isoflurane, 14 swine (mean ± SD =25.3 ± 0.8 kg) were studied using 200 μg/kg/min of landiolol or saline (control group) in three sequential stages: before, during, and after landiolol (saline) infusion. In each stage, after 5 min of mechanical ventilation with 100% oxygen, apnea was induced until the time to < 70% oxygen saturation. Hemodynamic and blood gas variables were measured, and the cerebral tissue oxygenation index (TOI) was recorded by near infrared spectroscopy (apnea experiment). After these steps, hemodilution was induced by hemorrhage of 600 ml and infusion of the same volume of hydroxyethylstarch, and the apnea experiments were then conducted before, during, and after landiolol (saline) infusion similarly to before hemodilution. RESULTS Landiolol decreased TOI at 1 min after apnea and at SpO2 < 70% by 3.3% and 7.0% from each corresponding value at baseline, and by 13.1% and 20.3% during hemodilution. Landiolol shifted the relationship between TOI and arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SaO2 ) or arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2 ) to the left; and reduced TOI at similar arterial blood oxygenation. This phenomenon was marked during hemodilution. CONCLUSIONS Landiolol reduces cerebral tissue oxygenation during apneic hypoxia. β-blockers increase the risk for cerebral hypoxia when apneic hypoxia occurs, especially during acute hemodilution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE A diagnosis of periodontitis progression is presently limited to clinical parameters such as attachment loss and radiographic imaging. The aim of this multicenter study was to monitor disease progression in patients with chronic periodontitis during a 24-mo follow-up program and to evaluate the amount of bacteria in saliva and corresponding IgG titers in serum for determining the diagnostic usefulness of each in indicating disease progression and stability. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 163 patients with chronic periodontitis who received trimonthly follow-up care were observed for 24 mo. The clinical parameters and salivary content of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans were assessed using the modified Invader PLUS assay, and the corresponding serum IgG titers were measured using ELISA. The changes through 24 mo were analyzed using cut-off values calculated for each factor. One-way ANOVA or Fisher's exact test was used to perform between-group comparison for the data collected. Diagnostic values were calculated using Fisher's exact test. RESULTS Of the 124 individuals who completed the 24-mo monitoring phase, 62 exhibited periodontitis progression, whereas 62 demonstrated stable disease. Seven patients withdrew because of acute periodontal abscess. The ratio of P. gingivalis to total bacteria and the combination of P. gingivalis counts and IgG titers against P. gingivalis were significantly related to the progression of periodontitis. The combination of P. gingivalis ratio and P. gingivalis IgG titers was significantly associated with the progression of periodontitis (p = 0.001, sensitivity = 0.339, specificity = 0.790). CONCLUSIONS It is suggested that the combination of P. gingivalis ratio in saliva and serum IgG titers against P. gingivalis may be associated with the progression of periodontitis.

Abstract
The edible white rot fungus Lentinula edodes possesses a variety of lignin degrading enzymes such as manganese peroxidases and laccases. Laccases belong to the multicopper oxidases, which have a wide range of catalytic activities including polyphenol degradation and synthesis, lignin degradation, and melanin formation. The exact number of laccases in L. edodes is unknown, as are their complete properties and biological functions. We analyzed the draft genome sequence of L. edodes D703PP-9 and identified 13 multicopper oxidase-encoding genes; 11 laccases in sensu stricto, of which three are new, and two ferroxidases. lcc8, a laccase previously reported in L. edodes, was not identified in D703PP-9 genome. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 13 multicopper oxidases can be classified into laccase sensu stricto subfamily 1, laccase sensu stricto subfamily 2 and ferroxidases. From sequence similarities and expression patterns, laccase sensu stricto subfamily 1 can be divided into two subgroups. Laccase sensu stricto subfamily 1 group A members are mainly secreted from mycelia, while laccase sensu stricto subfamily 1 group B members are expressed mainly in fruiting bodies during growth or after harvesting but are lowly expressed in mycelia. Laccase sensu stricto subfamily 2 members are mainly expressed in mycelia, and two ferroxidases are mainly expressed in the fruiting body during growth or after harvesting, and are expressed at very low levels in mycelium. Our data suggests that L. edodes laccases in same group share expression patterns and would have common biological functions.

Abstract
The energy spacing between the spin-doublet bound state of _{Λ}^{4}He(1^{+},0^{+}) was determined to be 1406±2±2 keV, by measuring γ rays for the 1^{+}→0^{+} transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the ^{4}He(K^{-},π^{-})_{Λ}^{4}He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus _{Λ}^{4}H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in ΛN interaction. By combining the energy spacings with the known ground-state binding energies, it is also found that the CSB effect is large in the 0^{+} ground state but is vanishingly small in the 1^{+} excited state, demonstrating that the ΛN CSB interaction has spin dependence.

Measurements of Elliptic and Triangular Flow in High-Multiplicity 3He+Au Collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2015; 115:142301. Abstract
We present the first measurement of elliptic (v(2)) and triangular (v(3)) flow in high-multiplicity (3)He+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in (3)He+Au and in p+p collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the (3)He+Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic v(2) and triangular v(3) anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The v(2) values are comparable to those previously measured in d+Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparisons with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three (3)He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

Abstract
Invasive tracheal aspergillosis (ITA) is an infection that is unique to patients who have undergone lung transplantation (LT). Although the activity of this disease often appears on imaging, we encountered a case of ITA that became exacerbated, despite few computed tomography (CT) findings, during rituximab combined chemotherapy for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. ITA developed during immunosuppressive therapy after LT. Because CT findings may show false-negative results, bronchoscopy is recommended for such cases.

Abstract
While adjuvant chemotherapy is preferable for colon cancer, treatment duration is controversial. This phase III trial is investigated optimal duration of adjuvant chemotherapy for Stage IIB/III colon cancer. Eighteen-month treatment with UFT/LV did not improve DFS compared with 6-month UFT/LV treatment. This study suggests that 6 months treatment duration is enough for Stage IIB/III colon cancer. Background While adjuvant chemotherapy is preferable for high-risk colon cancer, treatment duration is controversial. Oral uracil and tegafur (UFT)/leucovorin (LV) is widely used as a standard adjuvant chemotherapy for colon cancer in Japan. We conducted a phase III trial to investigate the optimal duration of adjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIB/III colon cancer. Patients and methods Patients with curatively resected stage IIB/III colon cancer were eligible for enrollment in this trial. Patients were registered within 6 weeks after surgery and were randomly assigned to receive UFT/LV for 28 of 35 days for 6 months in the control group or for 5 consecutive days per week for 18 months in the study group. The primary end point was the disease-free survival (DFS), and the secondary end points were overall survival (OS) and safety. Result A total of 1071 patients were registered from 233 centers. A statistically significant difference in DFS was not observed between the study group and the control group; the 5-year DFS was 69% in the study group and 69% in the control group. The 5-year OS was 85% in the study group and 85% in the control group. Conclusion Eighteen-month treatment with UFT/LV did not improve DFS or OS compared with 6-month UFT/LV treatment in patients with stage IIB/III colon cancer. The important finding from this study is that not 18 months but 6 months of treatment is enough for postoperative UFT/LV for stage IIB/III colon cancer. Clinical trial number UMIN-CTR C000000245.

Putative classification of clades of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157 using an IS-printing system. Lett Appl Microbiol 2015; 61:267-73. Abstract
UNLABELLED Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157 (O157) strains can be classified in clades by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), but this analysis requires significant laboratory effort. As the distribution of insertion sequence (IS) 629 insertions has been reported to be biased among different clades, O157 isolates can be putatively classified in clades by comparison with an IS629 distribution database. A database of the IS629 distribution in O157 strains isolated in Chiba Prefecture and their classification in clades was determined by SNP analysis and IS-printing, an easy and quick analytical tool for IS629 in the O157 genome. The IS629 distribution in O157 strains isolated in Fukuoka and Yamagata Prefectures was determined by IS-printing. These strains were putatively classified in clades by Relative Likelihood calculations that compared the IS-printing data and the IS629 distribution database. Concordance Ratios were calculated, which compared the number of strains putatively classified in a clade by Relative Likelihood to the number of strains classified in that clade by SNP analysis. For the Fukuoka and Yamagata strains, the Concordance Ratios for clades 3, 6 and 8 were 97-100%, for clade 7 about 88%, and for clades 2 and 12 over 90%. In conclusion, O157 clade 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 12 strains could be putatively classified by IS-printing. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study demonstrated that enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157 (O157) strains could be putatively classified in clades using an IS-printing system. IS-printing was previously developed as a relatively quick and easy tool for analysis of insertion sequence 629 in the O157 genome. Since most local government public health institutes in Japan carry out IS-printing for early detection of O157 outbreaks, these data should be useful for putative classification of O157 strains in each area.

Successful treatment of toxoplasmic encephalitis diagnosed early by polymerase chain reaction after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: two case reports and review of the literature. Abstract
Toxoplasmic encephalitis represents a rare, but often fatal infection after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based preemptive therapy is considered promising for this disease, but is not routinely applied, especially in low seroprevalence countries including Japan. We encountered 2 cases of toxoplasmic encephalitis after transplantation that were successfully treated. The diagnosis of toxoplasmic encephalitis in these cases was confirmed by PCR testing when neurological symptoms were observed. Both patients received pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine treatments within 2 weeks of the development of neurological symptoms, and remained free of recurrence for 32 and 12 months. These results emphasized the importance of the PCR test and immediate treatment after diagnosis for the management of toxoplasmic encephalitis.

A possible contribution of lipocalin-2 to the development of dermal fibrosis, pulmonary vascular involvement and renal dysfunction in systemic sclerosis. Br J Dermatol 2015; 173:681-9. [PMID: 25781362 DOI: 10.1111/bjd.13779] [Citation(s) in RCA: 28] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Accepted: 02/09/2015] [Indexed: 12/16/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Lipocalin-2 is an adipocytokine implicated in apoptosis, innate immunity, angiogenesis, and the development of chronic kidney disease. OBJECTIVES To investigate the role of lipocalin-2 in systemic sclerosis (SSc). MATERIALS AND METHODS Serum lipocalin-2 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 50 patients with SSc and 19 healthy subjects. Lipocalin-2 expression was evaluated in the skin of patients with SSc and bleomycin (BLM)-treated mice and in Fli1-deficient endothelial cells by reverse transcriptase-real time polymerase chain reaction, immunoblotting and/or immunohistochemistry. RESULTS Although serum lipocalin-2 levels were comparable between patients with SSc and healthy controls, the prevalence of scleroderma renal crisis was significantly higher in patients with SSc with elevated serum lipocalin-2 levels than in those with normal levels. Furthermore, serum lipocalin-2 levels inversely correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rate in patients with SSc with renal dysfunction. Among patients with SSc with normal renal function, serum lipocalin-2 levels positively correlated with skin score in patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc with disease duration of < 3 years and inversely correlated with estimated right ventricular systolic pressure in total patients with SSc. Importantly, in SSc lesional skin, lipocalin-2 expression was increased in dermal fibroblasts and endothelial cells. In BLM-treated mice, lipocalin-2 was highly expressed in dermal fibroblasts, but not in endothelial cells. On the other hand, the deficiency of transcription factor Fli1, which is implicated in SSc vasculopathy, induced lipocalin-2 expression in cultivated endothelial cells. CONCLUSIONS Lipocalin-2 may be involved in renal dysfunction and dermal fibrosis of SSc. Dysregulated matrix metalloproteinase-9/lipocalin-2-dependent angiogenesis due to Fli1 deficiency may contribute to the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with SSc.

Metal-insulator transition in the quasi-one-dimensional transport of fractional quantum Hall states. JOURNAL OF PHYSICS. CONDENSED MATTER : AN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS JOURNAL 2015; 27:202201. Abstract
We investigate edge state transmission in quantum point contacts (QPCs) in the fractional quantum-Hall regime, finding behavior reminiscent of a metal-insulator transition. The transition is suggested by an unusual behavior of the differential conductance in the fractional-quantum-Hall regime, and by the presence of a fixed point and universal scaling in the temperature dependence of the linear conductance. Noting that the 0.7 feature evolves continuously into a last fractional plateau at high magnetic fields, we suggest that this still unresolved feature may itself be viewed as a manifestation of a local, microscopic, metal-insulator transition.
