Abstract
The prevalent view of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates is that their essential low-energy physics is captured by local Coulomb interactions. However, this view been challenged recently by studies indicating the importance of longer-range components. Motivated by this, we demonstrate the importance of these components by examining the electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction with acoustic phonons in connection with the recently discovered renormalization in the near-nodal low-energy (~8-15 meV) dispersion of Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ). By studying its nontrivial momentum and doping dependence we conclude a predominance of forward scattering arising from the direct interplay between the e-ph and extended Coulomb interactions. Our results thus demonstrate how the low-energy renormalization can provide a pathway to new insights into how these interactions interplay with one another and influence pairing and dynamics in the cuprates.

Abstract
AIMS To reveal the cause of the difference in activity of chitinase A from Vibrio proteolyticus and chitinase A from a strain of Vibrio carchariae (a junior synonym of Vibrio harveyi), we investigated the pH-dependent activity of full-length V. proteolyticus chitinase A and a truncated recombinant corresponding to the V. harveyi form of chitinase A. METHODS AND RESULTS After overexpression in Escherichia coli strain DH5α, the full-length and truncated recombinant chitinases were purified by ammonium sulphate precipitation and anion exchange column chromatography. Chitinase activity was measured at various pH values using α-crystal and colloidal chitins as the substrate. The pH-dependent patterns of the relative specific activities for α-crystal chitin differed between the full-length and truncated recombinant chitinases, whereas those for colloidal chitin were similar to each other. CONCLUSION The difference in the activity of V. proteolyticus chitinase A and V. harveyi chitinase A might be partly due to a change in the pH dependence of the chitinase activities against α-crystal chitin, resulting from C-terminal processing. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY The present results are important findings for not only ecological studies on the genus Vibrio in association with survival strategies, but also phylogenetic studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The renal sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) plays an important role in the reuptake of filtered glucose in the proximal tubule and therefore may be an attractive target for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. This study characterizes the pharmacological profile of TS-071 ((1S)-1,5-anhydro-1-[5-(4-ethoxybenzyl)-2-methoxy-4-methylphenyl]-1-thio-D-glucitol hydrate), a novel SGLT2 inhibitor in vitro and in vivo. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Inhibition of glucose uptake by TS-071 was studied in CHO-K1 cells stably expressing either human SGLT1 or SGLT2. Single oral dosing studies were performed in rats, mice and dogs to assess the abilities of TS-071 to increase urinary glucose excretion and to lower plasma glucose levels. KEY RESULTS TS-071 inhibited SGLT2 activity in a concentration-dependent manner and was a potent and highly selective inhibitor of SGLT2. Orally administered TS-071 increased urinary glucose excretion in Zucker fatty rats and beagle dogs at doses of 0.3 and 0.03 mg·kg(-1) respectively. TS-071 improved glucose tolerance in Zucker fatty rats without stimulating insulin secretion and reduced hyperglycaemia in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and db/db mice at a dose of 0.3 mg·kg(-1). CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS These data indicate that TS-071 is a potent and selective SGLT2 inhibitor that improves glucose levels in rodent models of type 1 and 2 diabetes and may be useful for the treatment for diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
62 Background: Lapatinib (L) is an oral dual-tyrosine kinase inhibitor with specificity for both EGFR and HER2. A phase III randomized trial (EGF100151) demonstrated that L+ capecitabine (C) is superior to C alone in patients with HER2-positive advanced breast cancer that progressed following prior therapy including trastuzumab. Although, Japanese phase I/II trial (EGF109749) demonstrated better response rate and higher rate of rash over a previous phase III trial. Recent reports demonstrated the correlation of efficacy between EGFR targeted therapy and rash in colon cancer. In lung cancer EGFR mutation, which are predominantly found in patients of East Asia origin are highly sensitive to EGFR-TKI. Analyzing correlation of efficacy between rash and EGFR targeted therapy is important in breast cancer. Methods: From June 2009 to February 2010, we treated 28 HER2-positive MBC patients who developed progression after anthracyclines, taxanes and trastuzumab based regimens with L 1,250 mg p.o. daily plus C 2,000 mg/m2 p.o. days 1-14 q 21 in Saitama Cancer Center. EGFR status was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. We analyzed the correlation among rash, clinical outcome and EGFR status. Results: Fourteen (50%) patients experienced rash, which were two grade 3, four grade 2 and eight grade 1. Rash experienced group showed superior response rate (77% : 24%, p<0.05) and median survival time (N/A: 259 days, p<0.05) over non-rash group. EGFR status has no correlation between rash and clinical outcome. Conclusions: According to our single institute experience, rash might be predictive factor in Japanese HER2 positive breast cancer patients treated with L+C therapy.

Abstract
Iodine-131 concentrations in tap water higher than 100 BqL(-1) were reported by several local governments in Japan following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Some individuals in the emergency-response community recommended the boiling of tap water to remove iodine-131. However, the tap water boiling tests in this study showed no iodine-131 loss from the tap water with either short-term boiling (1-10 min) or prolonged boiling (up to 30 min) resulting in up to 3-fold volume reductions. In this situation, boiling was shown to be not effective in removing iodine-131 from tap water; indeed even higher concentrations may result from the liquid-volume reduction accompanying this process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Growing evidence suggests that esophageal stricture frequently develops after endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) or endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in early esophageal cancer patients, with an incidence proportional to the greater extent of mucosal defects resulting from improved EMR/ESD techniques. There seems to be a potential risk of perforation during bougienage in such patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS 648 stricture dilations for 78 lesions in 76 patients were consecutively included. The outcomes after combined use of Maloney and Savary wire-guided bougienage for esophageal strictures after EMR/ESD were analyzed in a single-institute retrospective case series study. The perforation rate was determined and risk factors for perforation were identified. RESULTS Patients underwent a median of 5.0 dilation procedures performed over a median 3.0 months for post-EMR/ESD strictures. Initial dilation was done a median 14 days following endoscopic resection. Perforations developed in seven patients (7/648 dilation procedures, 1.1%), all in the lower esophagus, and bleeding occurred in one patient (0.1% dilations). Two independent risk factors for development of perforation during dilation therapy for post-EMR/ESD stricture were identified: multiple dilations (odds ratio [OR] 1.2; P=0.012), and lower site of stricture (OR 12.8; P=0.043). Dysphagia was ameliorated by the dilations, and no patient required surgery. CONCLUSIONS A specific emerging risk of perforation in dilation therapy for post-EMR/ESD strictures was identified. Carefully planned treatment is necessary in patients with severe post-EMR/ESD strictures especially strictures requiring multiple dilations or located in the lower esophagus.

Abstract
AbstractThe behaviour of Tc in soil depends upon its chemical forms. Under aerobic conditions, Tc is present as pertechnetate Tc+7 (TcO4–), which has a high geochemical mobility and bioavailability. However, the form changes through a combination of factors such as redox conditions and microbial activity in soils. The anaerobic condition can be supplied in waterlogged rice paddy soil, which is common to Japan and other Southeast Asian countries.In this study, we focused on the influence of microbial activity on Tc behaviour in soil under the waterlogged condition. The microbial activity is expected to be controlled by addition of glucose and the activity causes a change in the soil redox condition. Air-dried soil with increasing glucose contents and sterile soil were used to compare the effect of microbial activity. The soils were waterlogged with 99Tc solution. Although the concentrations of 99Tc in the surface and bottom solutions of air-dried soils decreased over time with increasing glucose concentration, those of sterile soils were almost constant during the experiment. From these results, it was assumed that the activity of microorganisms influenced Tc adsorption onto the soil.

Abstract
Competition with magnetism is at the heart of high-temperature superconductivity, most intensely felt near a vortex core. To investigate vortex magnetism we have developed a spatially resolved probe based upon NMR spin-lattice-relaxation spectroscopy. With this approach we have found a spin-density wave associated with the vortex core in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+y), similar to checkerboard patterns in the local density of electronic states reported from scanning tunneling microscope experiments. We have determined both the spin-modulation amplitude and decay length from the vortex core in fields up to H=30 T.

Abstract
AIMS/OBJECTIVES To clarify transfusion incidence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected blood negative for mini pool-nucleic acid amplification testing (MP-NAT). BACKGROUND Japanese Red Cross (JRC) blood centres screen donated blood to avoid contamination with HBV. However, a low copy number of HBV may be overlooked. METHODS/MATERIALS In Hyogo-Prefecture, JRC blood centres screened 787 695 donations for HBV from April 2005 to March 2009. Of these, 685 844 were donations from the repeat donors. To detect the donors with HBV, serological tests, MP-NAT and/or individual donation (ID)-NAT were performed. To detect the recipients with transfusion-transmitted HBV infection (TTHBI), serological analysis and/or ID-NAT were performed. RESULTS In this study, 265 of the 685 844 repeat donations were serologically and/or MP-NAT positive for HBV. Their repository samples from the previous donation were examined in a look-back study; 13 of the 265 repository samples proved ID-NAT positive. Twelve recipients were transfused with HBV-infected blood components derived from 10 of the 13 HBV-infected donors. Only 1 of the 12 recipients was identified as TTHBI case. Seven of the 12 recipients escaped from our follow-up study and 4 recipients were negative for HBV during the observation period. CONCLUSION On the basis of the look-back study among the repeat donors in Hyogo-Prefecture, Japan, donations with HBV-infected blood negative for MP-NAT occurred with a frequency of 13 in 685 844 donations (∼1/53 000 donations). However, more than half of the recipients transfused with HBV-infected blood negative for MP-NAT could not be followed up. It is necessary to establish a more cautious follow-up system.

Abstract
We have determined the electron-coupling spectrum of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra by two deconvolution-free robust methods. As hole concentration decreases, the coupling spectral weight at low energies ≲15 meV shows a twofold and nearly band-independent enhancement, while that around ∼65 meV increases moderately, and that in ≳130 meV decreases leading to a crossover of dominant coupling excitation between them. Our results suggest the competition among multiple screening effects, and provide important clues to the source of sufficiently strong low-energy coupling, λ(LE)≈1, in an underdoped system.

Abstract
For the estimation of radiation doses to organisms, concentration ratios (C ( R )s) of radionuclides are required. In the present study, C(R)s of various elements were obtained as analogues of radionuclides for algae, molluscs, and crustaceans, in eight estuarine areas around Japan. The elements measured were Na, Mg, K, Ca, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rb, Sr, Y, Mo, Cd, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Pb, and U. The geometric mean (GM) values of C(R)s (GM-C(R)s) for alkali and alkaline earth elements, Mo, and U for all biota, as well as V for crustaceans, were less than 100 L/kg, while GM-C(R)s for the other elements were higher. When the obtained GM-C(R)s were compared with the C(R)s recommended in IAEA Technical Report Series 422 for marine organisms, no big differences between them were found; however, several elements (i.e. Cd and U for algae, Mn for molluscs, and Pb for crustaceans) were lower than the recommended C(R)s. In the present study, conversion factors (the ratio of C(R) for the whole body to that for muscle) for molluscs and crustaceans were also calculated, since data on edible parts of these organisms are generally available in the literature. For crustaceans, GM conversion factors of all the elements were more than one. For molluscs, GM conversion factors of rare earth elements and U were slightly higher than those for crustaceans, while GM conversion factors of the other elements were almost the same and less than 10. These results indicate that some elements tend to be concentrated in the internal organs of biota collected in the estuarine areas. For environmental radiological assessment, conversion factors from tissue to whole-body C(R) values are useful parameters.

Abstract
Field measurements of thoron exhalation rates have been carried out using a ZnS(Ag) scintillation detector with an accumulation chamber. The influence of soil surface temperature and moisture saturation on the thoron exhalation rate was observed. When the variation of moisture saturation was small, the soil surface temperature appeared to induce a strong effect on the thoron exhalation rate. On the other hand, when the variation of moisture saturation was large, the influence of moisture saturation appeared to be larger than the soil surface temperature. The number of data ranged over 405, and the median was estimated to be 0.79 Bq m(-2) s(-1). Dependence of geology on the thoron exhalation rate from the soil surface was obviously found, and a nationwide distribution map of the thoron exhalation rate from the soil surface was drawn by using these data. It was generally high in the southwest region than in the northeast region.

Within this phase it has been unclear which electronic symmetries (if any) are broken, what the identity of any associated order parameter might be, and which microscopic electronic degrees of freedom are active. Here we report the determination of a quantitative order parameter representing intra-unit-cell nematicity: the breaking of rotational symmetry by the electronic structure within each CuO(2) unit cell. We analyse spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunnelling microscope images of the intra-unit-cell states in underdoped Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8 +) (delta) and, using two independent evaluation techniques, find evidence for electronic nematicity of the states close to the pseudogap energy. Moreover, we demonstrate directly that these phenomena arise from electronic differences at the two oxygen sites within each unit cell. If the characteristics of the pseudogap seen here and by other techniques all have the same microscopic origin, this phase involves weak magnetic states at the O sites that break 90 degrees -rotational symmetry within every CuO(2) unit cell.

Abstract
An excitation at 201 meV is observed in the doped-hole ladder cuprate Sr14Cu24O41, using ultraviolet resonance Raman scattering with incident light at 3.7 eV polarized along the rungs. The excitation is of charge nature, with a temperature independent excitation energy, and can be understood via an intraladder pair-breaking process. The intensity tracks closely the order parameter of the charge density wave in the ladder CDW(L), but persists above its transition temperature T(CDW(L)), indicating a strong local pairing above the T(CDW(L)). The 201 meV excitation vanishes in La6Ca8Cu24O(41+δ), and La5Ca9Cu24O41 which are samples with no holes in the ladders. Our results suggest that the doped holes in the ladder are composite bosons consisting of paired holons that order below T(CDW).

Abstract
We report the first observation of the multilayer band splitting in the optimally doped trilayer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(10+δ) (Bi2223) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The observed energy bands and Fermi surfaces are originated from the outer and inner CuO2 planes (OP and IP). The OP band is overdoped with a large d-wave gap around the node of Δ0∼43 meV while the IP is underdoped with an even large gap of Δ0∼60 meV. These energy gaps are much larger than those for the same doping level of the double-layer cuprates, which leads to the large Tc in Bi2223. We propose possible origins of the large superconducting gaps for the OP and IP: (1) minimal influence of out-of-plane disorder and a proximity effect and (2) interlayer tunneling of Cooper pairs between the OP and IP.

Abstract
The improved resolution of laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) allows reliable access to fine structures in the spectrum. We present a systematic, doping-dependent study of a recently discovered low-energy kink in the nodal dispersion of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) (Bi-2212), which demonstrates the ubiquity and robustness of this kink in underdoped Bi-2212. The renormalization of the nodal velocity due to this kink becomes stronger with underdoping, revealing that the nodal Fermi velocity is nonuniversal, in contrast with assumed phenomenology. This is used together with laser ARPES measurements of the gap velocity (v2) to resolve discrepancies with thermal conductivity measurements.

Abstract
Vasopressin influences salt and water transport in renal epithelia. This is coordinated by the combined action of V2 receptor-mediated effects along distinct nephron segments. Modulation of NaCl reabsorption by vasopressin has been established in the loop of Henle, but its role in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT), an effective site for fine regulation of urinary electrolyte composition and the target for thiazide diuretics, is largely unknown. The Na+-Cl- cotransporter (NCC) of DCT is activated by luminal trafficking and phosphorylation at conserved NH2-terminal residues. Here, we demonstrate the effects of short-term vasopressin administration (30 min) on NCC activation in Brattleboro rats with central diabetes insipidus (DI) using the V2 receptor agonist desmopressin (dDAVP). The fraction of NCC abundance in the luminal plasma membrane was significantly increased upon dDAVP as shown by confocal microscopy, immunogold cytochemistry, and Western blot, suggesting increased apical trafficking of the transporter. Changes were paralleled by augmented phosphorylation of NCC as detected by antibodies against phospho-threonine and phospho-serine residues (2.5-fold increase at Thr53 and 1.4-fold increase at Ser71). dDAVP-induced phosphorylation of NCC, studied in tubular suspensions in the absence of systemic effects, was enhanced as well (1.7-fold increase at Ser71), which points to the direct mode of action of vasopressin in DCT. Changes were more pronounced in early (DCT1) than in late DCT as distinguished by the distribution of 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 in DCT2. These results suggest that the vasopressin-V(2) receptor-NCC signaling cascade is a novel effector system to adjust transepithelial NaCl reabsorption in DCT.
