Centrality-Dependent Modification of Jet-Production Rates in Deuteron-Gold Collisions at √[s(NN)]=200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2016; 116:122301. Abstract
Jet production rates are measured in p+p and d+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Jets are reconstructed using the R=0.3 anti-k_{t} algorithm from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and charged tracks in multiwire proportional chambers, and the jet transverse momentum (p_{T}) spectra are corrected for the detector response. Spectra are reported for jets with 12<p_{T}<50 GeV/c, within a pseudorapidity acceptance of |η|<0.3. The nuclear-modification factor (R_{dAu}) values for 0%-100% d+Au events are found to be consistent with unity, constraining the role of initial state effects on jet production. However, the centrality-selected R_{dAu} values and central-to-peripheral ratios (R_{CP}) show large, p_{T}-dependent deviations from unity, challenging the conventional models that relate hard-process rates and soft-particle production in collisions involving nuclei.

Quality assurance and its impact on ovarian visualization rates in the multicenter United Kingdom Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS). Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the quality assurance (QA) processes and their impact on visualization of postmenopausal ovaries in the ultrasound arm of a multicenter screening trial for ovarian cancer. METHODS In the United Kingdom Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening, 50 639 women aged 50-74 years were randomized to the ultrasound arm and underwent annual transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) examinations. QA processes were developed during the course of the trial and included regular monitoring of the visualization rate (VR) of the right ovary. Non-subjective factors identified previously as impacting on VR of the right ovary were included in a generalized estimating equation model for binary outcomes to enable comparison of observed vs adjusted VR between individual sonographers who had undertaken > 1000 scans during the trial and comparison between centers. Observed and adjusted VRs of sonographers and centers were ranked according to the highest VR. Analysis of annual VRs of sonographers and those of the included centers was undertaken. RESULTS Between June 2001 and December 2010, 48 230 of 50 639 women attended one of 13 centers for a total of 270 035 annual TVS scans. One or both ovaries were seen in 228 145 (84.5%) TVS scans. The right ovary was seen on 196 426 (72.7%) of the scans. For the 78 sonographers included in the model, the median difference between observed and adjusted VR was -0.7% (range, -7.9 to 5.9%) and the median change in VR rank after adjustment was 3 (range, 0-18). For the 13 centers, the median difference between observed and adjusted VR was -0.5% (range, -2.2 to 1%), with no change in ranking after adjustment. The median adjusted VR was 73% (interquartile range (IQR), 65-82%) for sonographers and 74.7% (IQR, 67.1-79.0%) for centers. Despite the increasing age of the women being scanned, there was a steady decrease in the number of sonographers with VR < 60% (21.4% in 2002 vs 2.0% in 2010) and an increase in sonographers with VR > 80% (14.3% in 2002 vs 40.8% in 2010). The median VR of the centers increased from 65.5% (range, 55.7-81.0%) in 2001 to 80.3% (range, 74.5-90.9%) in 2010. CONCLUSIONS A robust QA program can improve visualization of postmenopausal ovaries and is an essential component of ultrasound-based ovarian cancer screening trials. While VR should be adjusted for non-subjective factors that impact on ovarian visualization, subjective factors are likely to be the largest contributors to differences in VR.

Abstract
A series of new technologies and adjuvant therapies have been advocated in order to improve the success of IVF treatment. Dehydro-epiandrostenedione, growth hormones, Coenzyme Q 10, calcium ionosphores, immune therapy, heparin, low-dose aspirin, and vasodilators are among commonly prescribed pharmacological adjuvants. New technologies that are proposed to improve IVF outcomes include advanced sperm selection procedures, time- lapse embryo monitoring, preimplantation genetic screening, assisted hatching endometrial injury or embryo-glue. This review looked into current evidence to justify the use of these co-interventions and whether some of them can still be offered while awaiting more robust evidence to con rm or refute their role.

Abstract
We present the first measurement of elliptic (v(2)) and triangular (v(3)) flow in high-multiplicity (3)He+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in (3)He+Au and in p+p collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the (3)He+Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic v(2) and triangular v(3) anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The v(2) values are comparable to those previously measured in d+Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparisons with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three (3)He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of evidence and poor understanding of quality measurement and improvement in dentistry. The aim of this study was to undertake a nationally representative survey of the public in England to explore their views on the meaning of quality in dentistry. METHODS A cross sectional survey of the adult population (18 years and over) of England was undertaken. A sample size of 500 was set to provide a precision to plus or minus 5% after allowing for item non-response. A quota sampling approach was used, with predetermined quotas set for sex, age, working status and tenure to ensure the sample was nationally representative. Question selection and design were informed by the literature and a series of interviews with the public. Simple content analysis was used to identify themes in the responses to open questions. Dental service use, gender, age, ethnicity and social class were recorded. Frequency distributions were computed and outputs were cross-tabulated with various population sub-group categories. RESULTS Five hundred and thirteen people were interviewed. Approximately 20% of patients reported that their care was suboptimal; a third thought it was poor value for money and 20% did not trust their dentist. Good interpersonal communication, politeness and being put at ease were the most important factors that elicited positive responses. Negative factors were cost of care and waiting times. In making an assessment of quality, access (40% of all responses), technical quality of care (35%), professionalism (30%), hygiene/cleanliness (30%), staff attitude (27%), pain-free treatment (23%), value for money (22%), and staff putting patients at ease (21%) all emerged as important factors. CONCLUSIONS Quality in dentistry is multi-dimensional in nature, and includes different elements and emphases to other areas of healthcare. The results will inform the development of a measure of quality in dentistry.

Abstract
We present azimuthal angular correlations between charged hadrons and energy deposited in calorimeter towers in central d+Au and minimum bias p+p collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The charged hadron is measured at midrapidity |η|<0.35, and the energy is measured at large rapidity (-3.7<η<-3.1, Au-going direction). An enhanced near-side angular correlation across |Δη|>2.75 is observed in d+Au collisions. Using the event plane method applied to the Au-going energy distribution, we extract the anisotropy strength v_{2} for inclusive charged hadrons at midrapidity up to p_{T}=4.5 GeV/c. We also present the measurement of v_{2} for identified π^{±} and (anti)protons in central d+Au collisions, and observe a mass-ordering pattern similar to that seen in heavy-ion collisions. These results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations and measurements from p+Pb at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The magnitude of the mass ordering in d+Au is found to be smaller than that in p+Pb collisions, which may indicate smaller radial flow in lower energy d+Au collisions.

Abstract
Regulatory T (Treg) cells play a pivotal role in suppressing self-harmful T cell responses, but how Treg cells mediate suppression to maintain immune homeostasis and limit responses during inflammation is unclear. Here we show that effector Treg cells express high amounts of the integrin αvβ8, which enables them to activate latent transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). Treg-cell-specific deletion of integrin αvβ8 did not result in a spontaneous inflammatory phenotype, suggesting that this pathway is not important in Treg-cell-mediated maintenance of immune homeostasis. However, Treg cells lacking expression of integrin αvβ8 were unable to suppress pathogenic T cell responses during active inflammation. Thus, our results identify a mechanism by which Treg cells suppress exuberant immune responses, highlighting a key role for effector Treg-cell-mediated activation of latent TGF-β in suppression of self-harmful T cell responses during active inflammation. Human and mouse effector Treg cells express functional TGF-β-activating integrin αvβ8 Treg cell integrin αvβ8-mediated TGF-β activation is not needed for T cell homeostasis Integrin αvβ8 expression by Treg cells suppresses active inflammation Pathway could be targeted to promote Treg-cell-mediated suppression of inflammation

Abstract
Abstract
Foxp3+ regulatory T-cells (Tregs) play a pivotal role in suppressing self-harmful T-cell responses to prevent inflammatory disease. An important cytokine in the development and function of Tregs is TGFβ, a latent cytokine that must be activated to function. Compelling evidence suggests that T-cells need to respond to TGFβ in order for Treg-mediated suppression to occur. Yet, how TGFβ is regulated to promote this suppression is poorly understood. We now show that both mouse and human Tregs have high expression of the TGFβ-activating integrin αvβ8, which enables these cells to activate high levels of latent TGFβ. However, deletion of integrin αvβ8 expression from Tregs resulted in no overt phenotype at rest, indicating that the integrin plays little role in controlling immunity during homeostasis. Strikingly, we find that integrin αvβ8 expression and function is highly upregulated on an activated/effector Treg subset marked by KLRG1, and that Tregs lacking expression of integrin αvβ8 were unable to function as suppressive cells during models of colitis and delayed type hypersensitivity in vivo. Thus, we have uncovered an essential mechanism by which effector Tregs suppress T-cells during inflammation, highlighting a key role for Treg-mediated activation of latent TGFβ in suppression of self-harmful T-cell responses. Our work therefore highlights a novel pathway that could be therapeutically targeted to treat inflammatory disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE Asthma is associated with reversible airway obstruction, leucocyte infiltration, airways hyperresponsiveness (AHR), and airways remodeling. Fluid accumulation causes pulmonary edema contributing to airways obstruction. We examined the temporal relationship between the late asthmatic response (LAR) following allergen challenge of sensitized guinea-pigs and pulmonary edema measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS Ovalbumin (OVA) sensitized guinea-pigs received either a single OVA inhalation (acute) or nine OVA inhalations at 48 h intervals (chronic). Airways obstruction was measured as specific airways conductance (sG(aw)) by whole body plethysmography. AHR to inhaled histamine and bronchoalveolar lavage for leucocyte counts were measured 24 h after a single or the final chronic ovalbumin challenges. MRI was performed at intervals after OVA challenge and high-intensity edemic signals were quantified. RESULTS Ovalbumin caused early bronchoconstriction, followed at 7 h by an LAR and at 24 h AHR and leucocyte influx. The bright-intensity MRI edema signal, peaking at 7 h, was significantly (P < .05) greater after chronic (9.0 ± 0.7 × 10(3) mm(3)) than acute OVA (7.6 ± 0.2 × 10(3) mm(3)). Dexamethasone treatment before acute OVA abolished the AHR and LAR and significantly reduced eosinophils and the bright-intensity MRI edema from 9.1 ± 1.0 to 6.4 ± 0.3 × 10(3) mm(3). CONCLUSION We show a temporal relationship between edema and the LAR and their parallel reduction, along with eosinophils and AHR, by dexamethasone. This suggests a close causative association between pulmonary edema and impaired airways function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Nasal sensory nerves play an important role in symptoms associated with rhinitis triggered by environmental stimuli. Here, we propose that TRPV1 is pivotal in nasal sensory nerve activation and assess the potential of SB-705498 as an intranasal therapy for rhinitis. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The inhibitory effect of SB-705498 on capsaicin-induced currents in guinea pig trigeminal ganglion cells innervating nasal mucosa was investigated using patch clamp electrophysiology. A guinea pig model of rhinitis was developed using intranasal challenge of capsaicin and hypertonic saline to elicit nasal secretory parasympathetic reflex responses, quantified using MRI. The inhibitory effect of SB-705498, duration of action and potency comparing oral versus intranasal route of administration were examined. KEY RESULTS SB-705498 concentration-dependently inhibited capsaicin-induced currents in isolated trigeminal ganglion cells (pIC50 7.2). In vivo, capsaicin ipsilateral nasal challenge (0.03-1 mM) elicited concentration-dependent increases in contralateral intranasal fluid secretion. Ten per cent hypertonic saline initiated a similar response. Atropine inhibited responses to either challenge. SB-705498 inhibited capsaicin-induced responses by ∼50% at 10 mg·kg⁻¹ (oral), non-micronized 10 mg·mL⁻¹ or 1 mg·mL⁻¹ micronized SB-705498 (intranasal) suspension. Ten milligram per millilitre intranasal SB-705498, dosed 24 h prior to capsaicin challenge produced a 52% reduction in secretory response. SB-705498 (10 mg·mL⁻¹, intranasal) inhibited 10% hypertonic saline responses by 70%. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The paper reports the development of a guinea pig model of rhinitis. SB-705498 inhibits capsaicin-induced trigeminal currents and capsaicin-induced contralateral nasal secretions via oral and intranasal routes; efficacy was optimized using particle-reduced SB-705498. We propose that TRPV1 is pivotal in initiating symptoms of rhinitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ulcerative colitis is a lifelong, chronic, relapsing-remitting disease. OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between ulcerative colitis disease status and patient quality of life, and to determine the impact of ulcerative colitis on healthcare costs and work productivity, in the UK. METHODS Clinicians assessed 173 adult patients' current disease status at a single study visit using the partial Mayo (pMayo) instrument. Patients completed the Euro Quality of Life 5-dimension, 5-level (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire, the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI) questionnaire. Healthcare resource use was determined from questionnaires and from patients' medical charts. RESULTS Patients in remission had a significantly higher EQ-5D-5L scores (mean (SD) 0.86 (0.15)) than patients with active disease (0.71 (0.20); p<0.001). Patients with mild disease had significantly higher mean (SD) EQ-5D-5L scores than patients with moderate/severe disease: 0.77 (0.11) and 0.66 (0.24), respectively (p<0.001). The mean percent productivity impairment was greater for patients with active disease than for patients in remission on all items of the WPAI questionnaire: 24.6% vs 1.8% for work time missed, 34.1% vs 12.9% for impairment while working, 40.8% vs 14.4% for overall work impairment and 42.7% vs 13.0% for activity impairment (p<0.001 for all comparisons). The mean (SD) total cost of healthcare for ulcerative colitis in the prior 3 months was £1211 (1588). CONCLUSIONS When compared with patients in remission, patients with active ulcerative colitis have significantly worse quality of life and significantly more work impairment. The healthcare costs of ulcerative colitis are considerable.

Cold-nuclear-matter effects on heavy-quark production at forward and backward rapidity in d + Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 112:252301. Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured open heavy-flavor production via semileptonic decay over the transverse momentum range 1 < p(T) < 6 GeV/c at forward and backward rapidity (1.4 < |y| < 2.0) in d+Au and p + p collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. In central d+Au collisions, relative to the yield in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, a suppression is observed at forward rapidity (in the d-going direction) and an enhancement at backward rapidity (in the Au-going direction). Predictions using nuclear-modified-parton-distribution functions, even with additional nuclear-p(T) broadening, cannot simultaneously reproduce the data at both rapidity ranges, which implies that these models are incomplete and suggests the possible importance of final-state interactions in the asymmetric d + Au collision system. These results can be used to probe cold-nuclear-matter effects, which may significantly affect heavy-quark production, in addition to helping constrain the magnitude of charmonia-breakup effects in nuclear matter.

Abstract
Charged-pion-interferometry measurements were made with respect to the second- and third-order event plane for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. A strong azimuthal-angle dependence of the extracted Gaussian-source radii was observed with respect to both the second- and third-order event planes. The results for the second-order dependence indicate that the initial eccentricity is reduced during the medium evolution, which is consistent with previous results. In contrast, the results for the third-order dependence indicate that the initial triangular shape is significantly reduced and potentially reversed by the end of the medium evolution, and that the third-order oscillations are largely dominated by the dynamical effects from triangular flow.
