Abstract
Wheat grass is used as a general health tonic and is reported to be effective against several medical disorders, although detailed literature is not available. Besides drug therapy, a number of medicinal plants are effective in treating hyperlipidemia. This study examined the effects of wheat grass on high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia in rabbits. Thirty rabbits were divided into 3 groups of 10 rabbits each, group I receiving a control diet, group II a high-fat diet and group III a high-fat diet together with wheat grass over a period of 10 weeks. Fasting serum samples from the animals were analyzed for total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) and vitamin C, and the results were compared. The high-fat diet resulted in hyperlipidemia and an increase in oxidative stress, indicated by a significant rise in MDA levels, whereas antioxidant levels of GSH and vitamin C were significantly reduced. Wheat grass supplementation with a high-fat diet resulted in improved lipid levels (decreased total cholesterol and increased HDL-C) together with significantly reduced MDA levels and increased GSH and vitamin C levels. These results indicate the beneficial role of wheat grass in ameliorating hyperlipidemia and the associated oxidative stress.

Abstract
Rhizobium radiobacter is a gram negative bacillus that is infrequently recognized in clinical specimens but is emerging as an opportunistic human pathogen. Infections due to Rhizobium radiobacter are strongly related to the presence of foreign plastic material and effective treatment often requires removal of the device. We report a case of R. radiobacter bloodstream infection associated with a central venous catheter which was easily controlled by antimicrobial treatment and did not require removal of intravascular device. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report from India implicating R. radiobacter as a cause of human infection.

Wistar rats (200–250 g) of either sex were fed with fresh leaf homogenate of Ocimum sanctum by oral gavage in two different doses, 50 mg kg−1 (Os 50) and 100 mg kg−1 (Os 100), daily for 30 days. This was followed by isoproterenol administration (85 mg kg−1 s.c. two doses at 24 h intervals) in both control and O. sanctum-fed rats to induce myocardial necrosis. Hearts were isolated for estimation of endogenous myocardial antioxidants (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, reduced glutathione (GSH) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and myocardial lipid peroxidation) and light microscopic study. Increased basal myocardial antioxidant SOD (9.3 ± 1.2 vs 3.7 ± 0.7 units mg−1 protein; P < 0.05) and catalase activities (34.3 ± 5.4 vs 17.9 ± 5.1 units mg−1 protein; P < 0.05) were observed in the Os 50 group only without any evidence of cellular injury in both the groups. In control rats, isoproterenol administration caused significant depletion of myocardial SOD (1.7 ± 0.2 units mg−1 protein) and GPx (104 ± 2 mU mg−1 protein) activities and increase in GSH (551.7 ± 30.9 μg g−1 wet weight of tissue) level, with evidence of myocardial necrosis. Isoproterenol-induced changes in myocardial SOD, GPx and GSH were prevented by both the doses of O. sanctum, however cellular injury was minimal only with 50 mg kg−1. The results indicate that long-term feeding of O. sanctum offered significant protection against isoproterenol-induced myocardial necrosis through a unique property of enhancement of endogenous antioxidants.

The in-vitro antioxidant activities of different concentrations of the water, alcoholic, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extracts of the dried leaves of Clerodendron colebrookianum Walp, and in-vivo antioxidant activity of the water extract was studied in experimental rat models. The results obtained from in-vitro lipid peroxidation induced by FeSO4-ascorbate in rat liver homogenate showed a significant inhibition of lipid peroxidation by different extracts of C. colebrookianum leaf. Water extracts at concentrations (w/v) of 1:30, 1:50, 1:200 and 1:1000 showed the strongest inhibitory activity over the other organic extracts, suggesting maximum antioxidant effect. Chronic feeding of the water extract to Wistar albino rats (both sexes, 150–200g) in 1 or 2g kg−1/day doses for 14 days significantly increased the ferric reducing ability of plasma by 19% and 40% on the seventh day, and by 45% and 57% on the fourteenth day of treatment, respectively. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as a marker of lipid peroxidation, and some cellular antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione) were estimated in heart, liver and kidney. There was a significant reduction in hepatic and renal TBARS with both the doses, without any change in myocardial TBARS. There was no change in the level of antioxidants in heart, liver and kidney, except for the hepatic superoxide dismutase. The findings of this study showed that the leaf extract of C. colebrookianum increased the antioxidant capacity of blood and had an inhibitory effect on the basal level of lipid peroxidation of liver and kidney. This lends scientific support to the therapeutic use of the plant leaves, as claimed by the tribal medicine of North-East India.

Wistar rats, 150–200g, of either sex, were fed daily with commercial rat diet supplemented with palm olein oil in two doses (5% v/w (n = 16) and 10% v/w (n = 16) of diet) for 30 days. Control rats (n = 16) were fed with normal diet. On the 29th and 30th days, 8 rats from each group were administred isoproterenol (85 mg/kg, s.c., 24-h interval). On the 31st day, all rats were sacrificed and myocardial tissues were studied for thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), antioxidant enzymes and light microscopic changes, along with the ferric-reducing ability of plasma (FRAP). A significant rise in myocardial superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity and FRAP level were observed in rats fed with palm olein oil. Isoproterenol caused an increase in myocardial oxidative stress in control rats, as evidenced by an increase in myocardial TBARS level, reduction in FRAP and myocardial SOD, catalase and GPx activity, along with focal necrosis of cardiac muscle fibres on light microscopy. The rise in myocardial TBARS and depletion of SOD and catalase activity following isoproterenol administration were prevented in palm-olein-oil-supplemented diet-fed rats at both doses. Isoproterenol-induced myocardial light-microscopic changes were also prevented in the treated groups. The results suggest that dietary palm olein oil caused augmentation of myocardial antioxidant enzymes and protected against isoproterenol-induced myocardial necrosis and associated oxidative stress.

Abstract
Rhino-orbital zygomycosis is a life-threatening fungal infection generally occurring in patients with an underlying disorder, such as diabetes mellitus with ketoacidosis or with immunocompromising factors, although it may rarely appear in healthy individuals. The study has been undertaken to discuss the clinical presentation, pathogenesis, diagnostic work up and management of this rapidly progressive disease. Four male patients having uncontrolled diabetes and presenting with signs and symptoms of rhino-orbital zygomycosis were studied to illustrate the serious nature of the disease. All the four patients had rapidly deteriorating vision loss either unilateral or bilateral along with other nasal and orbital signs and symptoms. All the patients were put on liposomal amphotericin B and underwent orbital exenteration and pansinusectomy. One patient died, while the other three were successfully treated. Early diagnosis is critical in the prevention of morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. There is need for a high index of clinical suspicion in immunocompromised patients. Timely medical-surgical treatment proves extremely important for prognosis.

Abstract
A case of posterior corneal abscess with extension into the anterior chamber, in the presence of an intact corneal epithelium and clear anterior corneal stroma, occurring in a young patient is described. The patient responded to treatment with systemic and topical acyclovir. The diagnosis of presumed herpes simplex keratitis was made. We report this unusual presentation of ocular herpes manifesting as a posterior corneal and anterior chamber abscess.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW) is a bypass re-entrant tachycardia that results from an abnormal connection between the atria and ventricles. Mutations in PRKAG2 have been described in patients with familial WPW syndrome and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Based on the role of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signalling in the development of annulus fibrosus in mice, it has been proposed that BMP signalling through the type 1a receptor and other downstream components may play a role in pre-excitation. METHODS AND RESULTS Using the array comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH), we identified five individuals with non-recurrent deletions of 20p12.3. Four of these individuals had WPW syndrome with variable dysmorphisms and neurocognitive delay. With the exception of one maternally inherited deletion, all occurred de novo, and the smallest of these harboured a single gene, BMP2. In two individuals with additional features of Alagille syndrome, deletion of both JAG1 and BMP2 were identified. Deletion of this region has not been described as a copy number variant in the Database of Genomic Variants and has not been identified in 13 321 individuals from other cohort examined by array CGH in our laboratory. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate a novel genomic disorder characterised by deletion of BMP2 with variable cognitive deficits and dysmorphic features and show that individuals bearing microdeletions in 20p12.3 often present with WPW syndrome.

Abstract
Pediatric patients with recurrent brain tumors have a poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options. We investigated the use of high-dose chemotherapy with adoptive immunotherapy for recurrent brain tumors. Three pediatric patients with recurrent brain tumors received high-dose chemotherapy. This was followed by adoptive transfer of ex-vivo expanded T-cells. The T-cells were generated from peripheral blood after immunization with autologous cancer cells. The objectives of this study included (1) establishing the safety and feasibility of this potential treatment, (2) measuring changes in immune response after high-dose chemotherapy and adoptive immunotherapy, and (3) determining whether adoptive immunotherapy would be able to translate into a clinical response. Immune function was tested in all patients at the time of enrollment into the study. Humoral responses to recall antigens delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) were intact in all patients. After immunizing patients with autologous cancer cells, peripheral blood lymphocytes were harvested and activated with anti-CD3, expanded in-vitro, and infused post-autologous transplant. Patients received at least three doses of the vaccine, each consisting of an intradermal administration near a draining lymph node at biweekly intervals. Toxicity was limited and well tolerated in all patients. All three patients showed a tumor-specific immune response by serial imaging. Responses were durable at 16, 23, and 48 months, respectively.
