Abstract
Magnetization measurements and magnetotransmission spectroscopy of the solid oxygen α phase were performed in ultrahigh magnetic fields of up to 193 T. An abrupt increase in magnetization with large hysteresis was observed when pulsed magnetic fields greater than 120 T were applied. Moreover, the transmission of light significantly increased in the visible range. These experimental findings indicate that a first-order phase transition occurs in solid oxygen in ultrahigh magnetic fields, and that it is not just a magnetic transition. Considering the molecular rearrangement mechanism found in the O(2)-O(2) dimer system, we conclude that the observed field-induced transition is caused by the antiferromagnetic phase collapsing and a change in the crystal structure.

Abstract
Several radiological methods of measuring anteversion of the acetabular component after total hip replacement (THR) have been described. These studies used different definitions and reference planes to compare methods, allowing for misinterpretation of the results. We compared the reliability and accuracy of five current methods using plain radiographs (those of Lewinnek, Widmer, Liaw, Pradhan, and Woo and Morrey) with CT measurements, using the same definition and reference plane. We retrospectively studied the plain radiographs and CT scans in 84 hips of 84 patients who underwent primary THR. Intra- and inter-observer reliability were high for the measurement of inclination and anteversion with all methods on plain radiographs and CT scans. The measurements of inclination on plain radiographs were similar to the measurements using CT (p = 0.043). The mean difference between CT measurements was 0.6° (-5.9° to 6.8°). Measurements using Widmer’s method were the most similar to those using CT (p = 0.088), with a mean difference between CT measurements of -0.9° (-10.4° to 9.1°), whereas the other four methods differed significantly from those using CT (p < 0.001). This study has shown that Widmer’s method is the best for evaluating the anteversion of the acetabular component on plain radiographs. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2014; 96-B:597–603.

Abstract
Mutations in FLG coding profilaggrin cause ichthyosis vulgaris and are an important predisposing factor for atopic dermatitis. Until now, most case-control studies and population-based screenings have been performed only for prevalent mutations. In this study, we established a high-throughput FLG mutation detection system by real-time PCR with a set of two double-dye probes and conducted comprehensive screening for almost all of the Japanese-population-specific FLG mutations (ten FLG mutations). The present comprehensive screening for all ten FLG mutations provided a more precise prevalence rate for FLG mutations (11.1%, n = 820), which seemed high compared with data of previous reports based on screening for limited numbers of FLG mutations. Our comprehensive screening suggested that population-specific FLG mutations may be a significant predisposing factor for hay fever (odds ratio = 2.01 [95% CI: 1.027-3.936, P < 0.05]), although the sample sizes of this study were too small for reliable subphenotype analysis on the association between FLG mutations and hay fever in the eczema patients and the noneczema individuals, and it is not clear whether the association between FLG mutations and hay fever is due to the close association between FLG mutations and hay fever patients with eczema.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) is a serious food allergy in which anaphylaxis develops when exercise is performed within several hours after food intake. The precise mechanism underlying allergic sensitization in FDEIA has been an important issue but remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES We aimed to elucidate the pathomechanism including the route of allergen sensitization involved in FDEIA. METHODS A Japanese family with wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA), a specific form of FDEIA, were clinically examined. Mutation analysis of the gene encoding filaggrin (FLG) was also performed. RESULTS Two of the family members were confirmed as WDEIA on the basis of their medical history and positive provocation test results. Notably, the two affected individuals in the family had concomitant ichthyosis vulgaris. Mutation analysis of FLG revealed that they carry one or more loss-of-function mutations that have not been described in the Japanese population. CONCLUSION These results indicate that FLG mutations might be involved in the pathogenesis of WDEIA in the present case.

Abstract
The key objective of mastication is to form a food bolus suitable for smooth swallowing. However, chewing is usually performed without a conscious effort. Poor bolus formation can cause pharyngeal residue and suffocation in elderly individuals with reduced swallowing function. Therefore, chewing with a conscious effort may help the bolus to more easily pass the pharynx. This study aimed to clarify the impact of mastication with a conscious effort on the feeding sequence. Subjects included 25 dentulous volunteers who were informed and provided written consent. Lateral videofluoroscopy was performed during the feeding of solid agar jelly under two conditions: chewing naturally in their usual manner (without volition) and chewing with a conscious effort (with volition). Temporal evaluation was performed for mastication, stage II transport (STII), swallow onset and oropharyngeal transit time. Moreover, bolus volume at swallow onset and subjective evaluation of swallowing easiness were measured. Volitional chewing with a conscious effort lengthened the duration of the chewing sequence before and after STII and delayed the swallow onset despite the fact that the bolus volume in the vallecula and hypopharynx (HYP) had significantly increased. Furthermore, with volition, the bolus transit time from swallow onset in the oral cavity, upper oropharynx and HYP was reduced, and subjective evaluation of swallowing easiness demonstrated significant improvement. These results suggest that volitional chewing with a conscious effort can alter bolus transport and swallowing, resulting in easier swallowing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic follicular occlusive disease with characteristic recurrent draining sinuses, skin abscesses and disfiguring scars, mainly involving the axilla, groin, perianal and perineal regions. While most HS cases are nonfamilial, familial cases showing autosomal dominant inheritance have been reported. Recently, loss-of-function mutations in the genes encoding γ-secretase have been identified as a cause of familial HS in the Chinese and British populations. OBJECTIVES To identify mutations in the genes encoding γ-secretase in Japanese patients with familial and nonfamilial HS. METHODS Two affected and three unaffected individuals from a Japanese family with familial HS and nine patients with nonfamilial HS were recruited. We conducted mutation analysis of the γ-secretase genes in Japanese patients with familial and nonfamilial HS. RESULTS A novel splice site mutation in the nicastrin gene NCSTN, one of the six key component genes encoding γ-secretase, was identified in the patients with familial HS. Neither unaffected individuals in the family nor 100 ethnically matched control alleles carry this mutation. None of the nine patients with nonfamilial HS carry nonsense, frameshift or splice site mutations in this gene. CONCLUSIONS A novel splice site mutation, c.582+1delG, in NCSTN was identified in the familial patients with HS. We also reveal for the first time that a γ-secretase gene mutation is not linked to the development of nonfamilial HS. These results would further pave the way to a better understanding of the contribution of γ-secretase and other genes to the pathogenesis of HS and to the development of a new therapeutic strategy for HS.

Abstract
In many eusocial Hymenoptera, a proportion of males are produced by workers. To assess the effect of male production by workers on the effective population size N(e), a general expression of N(e) in Hymenoptera with worker-produced males is derived on the basis of the genetic drift in the frequency of a neutral allele. Stochastic simulation verifies that the obtained expression gives a good prediction of N(e) under a wide range of conditions. Numerical computation with the expression indicates that worker reproduction generally reduces N(e). The reduction can be serious in populations with a unity or female-biased breeding sex ratio. Worker reproduction may increase N(e) in populations with a male-biased breeding sex ratio, only if each laying worker produce a small number of males and the difference of male progeny number among workers is not large. Worker reproduction could be an important cause of the generally lower genetic variation found in Hymenoptera, through its effect on N(e).

Abstract
Synthetic 4-methylsulfinylhexyl isothiocyanate (MITC)(a potent inducer of phase 2 detoxification enzymes from broccoli) and 6-MITC(a potent anti-proliferative principal from wasabi) slightly inhibited the induction of mouse skin tumor in a two-stage process of carcinogenesis (initiator, 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene; promotor,12-o-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate), but the effect was not significant. Both compounds, however, significantly inhibited the mutation of skin resulting from topical applications of the carcinogens. When a murine hepatoma cell line, Hepa 1c1c7, was treated with 2-,4-,6- and 8-MITCs, they augmented the induction of its quinone reductase, one of the phase 2 detoxification enzymes in a concentration dependent manner, and the 4- and 6-MITCs were much more potent on the reduction of the enzyme than the 2- and 8-MITCs. All 2-, 4-, 6- and 8-MITCs suppressed the growth of murine tumor cells, their suppressive activities being proportional to the length of their methyl residue. They were also cytotoxic to mouse peritoneal exudate macrophages which were not proliferating in vitro, indicating that the cellular targets of isothiocyanate may not be dependent upon the cell cycle. In addition, all the 2-, 4-, 6- and 8-MITCs inhibited the production of nitric oxide (a potent radical carcinogen) by peritoneal macrophages.

Abstract
We present, for the first time, an adjoint variable method (AVM) for wideband sensitivity analysis of dispersive materials. The time domain transmission line modeling technique is exploited to calculate the response and its sensitivities with respect to all the designable parameters using at most one extra simulation. A z-domain representation of dispersive materials is utilized in the derivation of this technique. Our approach is illustrated through sensitivity analysis of a two-dimensional teeth-shaped plasmonic resonator. The AVM sensitivities are compared with the accurate and expensive finite difference approach and good agreement is achieved. This theory can be extended to other dispersive materials and dispersive metamaterials as well.

Abstract
Transgenic animal models have been used in small numbers in gene function studies in vivo for a period of time, but more recently, the use of a single transgenic animal model has been approved as a second species, 6-month alternative (to the routine 2-year, 2-animal model) used in short-term carcinogenicity studies for generating regulatory application data of new drugs. This article addresses many of the issues associated with the creation and use of one of these transgenic models, the rasH2 mouse, for regulatory science. The discussion includes strategies for mass producing mice with the same stable phenotype, including constructing the transgene, choosing a founder mouse, and controlling both the transgene and background genes; strategies for developing the model for regulatory science, including measurements of carcinogen susceptibility, stability of a large-scale production system, and monitoring for uniform carcinogenicity responses; and finally, efficient use of the transgenic animal model on study. Approximately 20% of mouse carcinogenicity studies for new drug applications in the United States currently use transgenic models, typically the rasH2 mouse. The rasH2 mouse could contribute to animal welfare by reducing the numbers of animals used as well as reducing the cost of carcinogenicity studies. A better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the transgenic rasH2 mouse will result in greater and more efficient use of this animal model in the future.

Abstract
In spite of the undisputed importance of altered expression patterns of microRNAs (miRNAs) in various cancers, there is little information on the clinicopathologic significance of cancer-related miRNAs (MIR21, MIR143, MIR144, MIR145, and MIR205) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We examined the expression levels of the precursor and mature miRNA genes in ESCC using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We also investigated the mRNA expression levels of processing elements (RNASEN, DGCR8, and DICER1) that participate in miRNA-biogenesis pathway. Furthermore, we analyzed the relationships between the expression levels of these five miRNAs and the clinicopathologic parameters of ESCC patients. The expression levels of mature MIR21 and mature MIR145 were higher in ESCC than those in normal epithelium (P < 0.05). The mature/pre ratio of MIR21 in ESCC was higher than that in normal epithelium (P < 0.05). With regard to miRNA-processing elements, the expression level of RNASEN was higher in ESCC than in normal epithelium (P < 0.05). Furthermore, altered expression of these miRNAs was related to the clinicopathologic features of ESCC patients. The high expression of mature MIR21 and mature MIR205 was associated with lymph node positivity in ESCC patients (P < 0.05). The high levels of expression of mature MIR143 and mature MIR145 were associated with recurrence of metastasis in ESCC patients (P < 0.05). The findings may imply that miRNA biogenesis is aberrantly accelerated in ESCC. Analysis of the expression levels of miRNAs should provide useful information for evaluation of the staging, prognosis, and treatment of ESCC patients.
