Abstract
Plasma levels of 1,25-(OH)2-D were low in children with hypophosphatemic vitamin D-resistant rickets (HVDRR), but increased after very large doses of 1 alpha-OH-D3. These results suggest that the metabolism of 1,25-(OH)2-D is accelerated in HVDRR. In addition, the lower level of plasma 1,25-(OH)2-D in untreated HVDRR was correlated with the lower level of serum phosphate and renal threshold phosphate concentration (TmP/GFR). The administration of 1 alpha-OH-D3 to the patients with HVDRR could enhance the renal threshold phosphate concentration.

Abstract
Super-Kamiokande (SK) can search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) by detecting neutrinos produced from WIMP annihilations occurring inside the Sun. In this analysis, we include neutrino events with interaction vertices in the detector in addition to upward-going muons produced in the surrounding rock. Compared to the previous result, which used the upward-going muons only, the signal acceptances for light (few-GeV/c^{2}-200-GeV/c^{2}) WIMPs are significantly increased. We fit 3903 days of SK data to search for the contribution of neutrinos from WIMP annihilation in the Sun. We found no significant excess over expected atmospheric-neutrino background and the result is interpreted in terms of upper limits on WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections under different assumptions about the annihilation channel. We set the current best limits on the spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross section for WIMP masses below 200 GeV/c^{2} (at 10 GeV/c^{2}, 1.49×10^{-39} cm^{2} for χχ→bb[over ¯] and 1.31×10^{-40} cm^{2} for χχ→τ^{+}τ^{-} annihilation channels), also ruling out some fraction of WIMP candidates with spin-independent coupling in the few-GeV/c^{2} mass range.

Abstract
The present paper reports on the penetration of salicylic acid, a substance with high permeability, through swine skin. Liquid scintillation counter and autoradiographic measurements were performed, on the excised swine skin to which ointment had been applied. The results indicated that the substance penetrated mainly through transfollicular route and was deposited transiently at various levels of each follicle, resulting in zig-zag pattern on the liquid scintillation counter curve. The autoradiographic study also revealed a heavy transfollicular pattern of the substance though a slight transepidermal pattern was also noted. Whether the substance penetrates because of its lipid solubility or because of its affinity to the keratinous tissue is still open to question.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the safety of different magnetic dental attachments during 3-T MRI according to the American Society for Testing and Materials F2182-09 and F2052-06e1 standard testing methods and to develop a method to determine MRI compatibility by measuring magnetically induced torque. METHODS The temperature elevations, magnetically induced forces and torques of a ferromagnetic stainless steel keeper, a coping comprising a keeper and a cast magnetic alloy coping were measured on MRI systems. RESULTS The coping comprising a keeper demonstrated the maximum temperature increase (1.42 °C) for the whole-body-averaged specific absorption rate and was calculated as 2.1 W kg⁻¹ with the saline phantom. All deflection angles exceeded 45°. The cast magnetic alloy coping had the greatest deflection force (0.33 N) during 3-T MRI and torque (1.015 mN m) during 0.3-T MRI. CONCLUSIONS The tested devices showed minimal radiofrequency (RF)-induced heating in a 3-T MR environment, but the cast magnetic alloy coping showed a magnetically induced deflection force and torque approximately eight times that of the keepers. For safety, magnetic dental attachments should be inspected before and after MRI and large prostheses containing cast magnetic alloy should be removed. Although magnetic dental attachments may pose no great risk of RF-induced heating or magnetically induced torque during 3-T MRI, their magnetically induced deflection forces tended to exceed acceptable limits. Therefore, the inspection of such devices before and after MRI is important for patient safety.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to detect differences in median nerve strain between patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and healthy controls using cyclic compression apparatus. Twenty-eight patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome and 30 normal patients were examined by ultrasound elastography. Median nerve strain, strain ratio of reference coupler and median nerve area and perimeter were measured. The areas under receiver operating characteristic curves were compared among the parameters. Median nerve strains of the patients were significantly smaller than those of the controls (p < 0.001). Strain ratios, areas and perimeters were significantly larger in the patients than in the controls (p < 0.001). The areas under curves were 0.963, 0.917, 0.759 and 0.706 for strain, strain ratio, area and perimeter, respectively. The median nerve strain had the highest area under the curve. The ultrasonic strain measurements of the median nerve provided by the cyclic compression apparatus were superior to morphologic assessment in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome.

Abstract
The T2K off-axis near detector ND280 is used to make the first differential cross-section measurements of electron neutrino charged current interactions at energies ∼1 GeV as a function of electron momentum, electron scattering angle, and four-momentum transfer of the interaction. The total flux-averaged ν(e) charged current cross section on carbon is measured to be ⟨σ⟩(ϕ)=1.11±0.10(stat)±0.18(syst)×10⁻³⁸ cm²/nucleon. The differential and total cross-section measurements agree with the predictions of two leading neutrino interaction generators, NEUT and GENIE. The NEUT prediction is 1.23×10⁻³⁸ cm²/nucleon and the GENIE prediction is 1.08×10⁻³⁸ cm²/nucleon. The total ν(e) charged current cross-section result is also in agreement with data from the Gargamelle experiment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Azilsartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), was administered to renal transplant recipients to investigate the safety and antihypertensive effect in addition to its ARB-characteristic organ-protective effect. METHODS The subjects were 20 patients (18 males, 2 females; baseline serum creatinine 2.39 ± 1.33 mg/dL) responding poorly to candesartan, who suffered albuminuria (>0.3 g/g creatinine) and hypertension (>140/90 mm Hg) following renal transplantation. Three months after candesartan was switched to azilsartan 20 mg/d, blood pressure, creatinine-corrected urinary albumin excretion, urinary L-type acid binding protein, urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguano-sine, serum creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rate were evaluated. Thirteen patients received cyclosporine (65.0%) and 7 received tacrolimus (35.0%). Another hypertensive (calcium antagonist) agent was combined in 7 (35.0%). RESULTS Systolic blood pressure significantly decreased from 139.5 mm Hg (baseline) from 128.7 mm Hg (at 3 months), whereas no significant changes were observed for diastolic blood pressure. The percentage of patients achieving the target level of antihypertensive effect (blood pressure < 130/80 mm Hg) significantly improved from 30.0% (baseline) to 70.0% (at 3 months). No significant changes were observed in renal graft function, oxidative stress marker level, or biochemical examination findings. CONCLUSION Sufficient antihypertensive effect was demonstrated soon after switching to azilsartan. However, no significant change was found in renal damage markers. Long-term study must be conducted to confirm the protective effect azilsartan on the transplanted kidney, as found with candesartan. The safety of azilsartan was demonstrated. If the transplanted kidney protection is demonstrated, this drug is expected to contribute to the improved long-term prognosis of renal transplant recipients.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to test the reliability of ultrasonic median nerve strain measurements using automatic vibratory equipment. Strain ratios of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel model and the reference coupler were measured at three different settings of the transducer: 0, +2 and +4 mm (+ = compressing the model down 2-4 mm initially). After measurement of the carpal tunnel model, a +4-mm setting was chosen for in vivo measurement. The median nerve strains of 30 wrists were measured by two examiners using the equipment. Intra- and inter-examiner correlation coefficients (CCs) for the strain ratios were calculated. The closest ratio was found in the +4-mm placement (strain ratio: 0.73, Young's modulus ratio: 0.79). The intra-examiner CC was 0.91 (p < 0.01), and the inter-examiner CCs were 0.72-0.78 (p < 0.01). The automatic vibratory equipment was useful in quantifying median nerve strain at the wrist.

Abstract
We present the results of searches for nucleon decay via n→ν[over ¯]π0 and p→ν[over ¯]π+ using data from a combined 172.8 kt·yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande-I,-II, and-III. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: τn→ν[over ¯]π0>1.1×10(33) years and τp→ν[over ¯]π+>3.9×10(32) years at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract
The trilepton nucleon decay modes p→e+νν and p→μ+νν violate |Δ(B-L)| by two units. Using data from a 273.4 kt yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande a search for these decays yields a fit consistent with no signal. Accordingly, lower limits on the partial lifetimes of τp→e+νν>1.7×10(32) years and τp→μ+νν>2.2×10(32) years at a 90% confidence level are obtained. These limits can constrain Grand Unified Theories which allow for such processes.

Abstract
The ubiquitin-proteasome system is central in the regulation of cellular proteins controlling cell cycle progression and apoptosis, drawing much interest for developing effective targeted cancer therapies. Herein, we developed a novel pH-responsive polymeric-micelle-based carrier system to effectively deliver the proteasome inhibitor MG132 into cancer cells. MG132 is covalently bound to the block copolymer composed of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyaspartate through an acid-labile hydrazone bond. This bond is stable at physiological condition, but hydrolytically degradable in acidic compartments in the cell, such as late-endosomes and lysosomes, and thus, it was used for controlled release of MG132 after EPR-mediated preferential accumulation of the micelles into the tumor. MG132-loaded micelles have monodispersed size distribution with an average diameter of 45nm, and critical micelle concentration is well below 10(-7)M. In vitro studies against several cancer cell lines confirmed that MG132-loaded micelles retained the cytotoxic effect, and this activity was indeed due to the inhibition of proteasome by released MG132 from the micelles. Real-time in vitro confocal-microscopy experiments clearly indicated that MG132-conjugated micelles disintegrated only inside the target cells. By intravital confocal micro-videography, we also confirmed the prolonged circulation of MG132 loaded micelles in the bloodstream, which lead to tumor specific accumulation of micelles, as confirmed by in vivo imaging 24h after injection. These micelles showed significantly lower in vivo toxicity than free MG132, while achieving remarkable antitumor effect against a subcutaneous HeLa-luc tumor model. Our findings create a paradigm for future development of polymeric-micelle-based carrier system for other peptide aldehyde type proteasome inhibitors to make them effective cohort of the existing cancer therapeutic regiments.

Precise measurement of the neutrino mixing parameter θ23 from muon neutrino disappearance in an off-axis beam. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 112:181801. Abstract
New data from the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment produce the most precise measurement of the neutrino mixing parameter θ23. Using an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV and a data set corresponding to 6.57×10(20) protons on target, T2K has fit the energy-dependent νμ oscillation probability to determine oscillation parameters. The 68% confidence limit on sin(2)(θ23) is 0.514(-0.056)(+0.055) (0.511±0.055), assuming normal (inverted) mass hierarchy. The best-fit mass-squared splitting for normal hierarchy is Δm32(2)=(2.51±0.10)×10(-3) eV(2)/c(4) (inverted hierarchy: Δm13(2)=(2.48±0.10)×10(-3) eV(2)/c(4)). Adding a model of multinucleon interactions that affect neutrino energy reconstruction is found to produce only small biases in neutrino oscillation parameter extraction at current levels of statistical uncertainty.

Search for dinucleon decay into kaons in Super-Kamiokande. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 112:131803. Abstract
A search for the dinucleon decay pp → K+ K+ has been performed using 91.6 kton·yr data from Super-Kamiokande-I. This decay provides a sensitive probe of the R-parity-violating parameter λ112''. A boosted decision tree analysis found no signal candidates in the data. The expected background was 0.28±0.19 atmospheric neutrino induced events and the estimated signal detection efficiency was 12.6%±3.2%. A lower limit of 1.7×10(32) years has been placed on the partial lifetime of the decay O16 → C14K+ K+ at 90% C.L. A corresponding upper limit of 7.8×10(-9) has been placed on the parameter λ112''.
