Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) could protect against subsequent renal ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI). However, the mechanisms underlying IPC remain far from complete. Hence, we explored the effects of IPC on the renal and systemic hemodynamic changes, renal function and morphology, as well the involvement of endothelial and inducible nitric oxide synthase (eNOS/iNOS), and nitric oxide (NO). METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups after right-side nephrectomy: Sham group (surgery without vascular clamping); IRI group (the left renal artery was clamped for 45 min); IPC group (pretreated with 15 min of ischemia and 10 min of reperfusion); IPC + vehicle group (administrated with 0.9% saline 5 min before IPC); and IPC + N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methylester (L-NAME) group (pretreated with L-NAME 5 min prior to IPC). The renal and systemic hemodynamic parameters, renal function and morphology, as well as eNOS, iNOS, and NO expression levels in the kidneys were measured at the indicated time points after reperfusion. RESULTS IPC rats exhibited significant improvements in renal function, morphology, and renal artery blood flow (RABF), without obvious influence on the systemic hemodynamics and renal vein blood flow. Increased eNOS, iNOS, and NO expression levels were detected in the kidneys of IPC rats 24 h after reperfusion. Furthermore, the beneficial effects were fully abolished by the administration of L-NAME. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that IPC contributes to early restoration of RABF, probably through eNOS/iNOS-mediated NO production, thereby alleviating the renal dysfunction and histological damage caused by IRI.

Abstract
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) appear to be highly associated with arsenic (As) uptake in host plants because arsenate (As(V)) and phosphorus (P) share the same transporter, whereby AMF can enhance P uptake. A short-term experiment was conducted for low- (0 to 0.05 mM As) and high-affinity (0 to 2.5 mM As) uptake systems, to investigate the AMF role on As uptake mechanism in plants, which may explain As uptake kinetics in upland rice cultivar: Zhonghan 221. When concentration of As ranged from 0 to 0.05 mM, Funneliformis geosporum (Fg) significantly decreased arsenite (As(III)) and monomethylarsonicacid (MMA) uptake when (p < 0.05) compared to non-mycorrhizal (NM) treatment, since the major route for (As(III)) in rice roots-rice silicon transporter Lsi1 would be influenced by Fg inoculation at high As concentrations. Fg can also reduce As(V) uptake significantly (p < 0.05) under both uptake systems relative to NM treatment, whereas, Funneliformis mosseae (Fm) increased As(V) and MMA uptake in rice roots, with MMA uptake rate generally lower than As(III) and As(V). Using suitable AMF species inoculation with rice, As uptake and accumulation in rice grains can be reduced and the risk to human health, once consumed, can be minimized.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) has long been recognised as a global pollutant, because it can remain in the atmosphere for more than 1 year. The mercury that enters the environment is generally acknowledged to have two sources: natural and anthropogenic. Hg takes three major forms in the environment, namely methyl-Hg (MeHg), Hg(0) and Hg(2+). All three forms of Hg adversely affect the natural environment and pose a risk to human health. In particular, they may damage the human central nervous system, leading to cardiovascular, respiratory and other diseases. MeHg is bioavailable and can be bioaccumulated within food webs. Therefore, several methods of eliminating Hg from the soil and the aquatic system have been proposed. The focus of this article is on phytoremediation, as this technique provides a low-cost and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods.

Abstract
PURPOSE Current evidence suggests that preconditioning with erythropoietin (EPO) can protect against ischemia reperfusion injury in rodents. However, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the efficacy and safety of high-dose EPO in kidney transplantation have yielded inconclusive results. Herein, we performed a meta-analysis of RCTs to assess whether the administration of high-dose EPO can improve graft function and the potential adverse events. METHODS Relevant RCT studies that investigated high-dose EPO on graft function after kidney transplantation were comprehensively searched in Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Library until July 10, 2014. All statistical analyses were performed using Review Manager 5.0 and STATA 12.0. RESULTS A total of 4 RCTs involving 356 patients were identified. Comprehensively, a trend of reduction in the incidence of delayed graft function could be observed in the EPO group (EPO vs. placebo groups: RR=0.88); however, the result did not reach the significance level (95% CI, 0.72-1.08; P=0.21). Furthermore, no significant difference in the incidences of adverse events was observed between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS The current meta-analysis indicates that the administration of high-dose EPO is, to some extent, prone to protect kidney function without increasing the susceptibility to adverse events.

Abstract
Paddy soil and rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the Wanshan mining area in Guizhou Province, China, have been contaminated by toxic trace metals such as cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg). The present study examined correlations between the types and physicochemical parameters of the soil and the contents of trace metals and the different forms of Hg in rice. The health risks of consuming contaminated rice from the Wanshan mining area were also assessed. Sequential extraction procedures were used to investigate the chemical behavior of Hg in the soil. The results showed that Hg and Cd were the most abundant trace metals in the Wanshan mining area. The toxic methylmercury (MeHg) content was substantial in brown rice, and the total amounts of total Hg (THg), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-Hg, and water-soluble Hg varied in the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils. An antagonistic interaction between Mn in brown rice, straw, and husk and MeHg in brown rice was also shown. An analysis of calculated dietary intake, target hazard quotients, and hazard indexes showed a potential risk of transferring Hg, MeHg, and Cd to humans when rice from the Wanshan mining area is consumed. Therefore, it must be concluded that consuming contaminated rice near the Wanshan mining area is a potential threat to human health.

Abstract
In order to assess the effect of long-term versus short-term intravesical chemotherapy in preventing the recurrence of patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, we searched several databases with words as mesh terms and free text words to find all eligible randomized clinical trials (RCTs) for the comparison of the two strategies of instillation durations. "Observed-Expected events research (O-E)" and "Variance (V)" for calculating hazard ratio (HR) were used in Revman 5.2 software recommended by Cochrane Collabration for data analysis. Sensitivity and subgroup analysis were selected to minish heterogeneity. GRADEpro 3.6 profile recommended by Cochrane Collabration was employed for quality assessment of analyses. Finally, 13 eligible RCTs with 4216 patients were included in this review and 16 comparisons from 13 trials were involved for analysis. The pooled analysis revealed no significant difference between long-term and short-term duration [HR=0.99, 95% CI (0.89, 1.11), P=0.89]. Within the subgroup analysis, patients benefited from long-term instillations with a start regimen of one immediate instillation [HR=0.83, 95% CI (0.69, 1.00), P=0.05]. But patients were not suitable to receive long-term instillations with epirubicin (EPI) [HR=1.01, 95% CI (0.91, 1.13), P=0.78]. The progression rate was not reduced after long-term instillations [HR=0.96, 95% CI (0.66, 1.39), P=0.82]. From our results, patients should not receive introvesical chemotherapy more than half a year. In contrast, patients with one immediate instillation are preferred to have a long-term duration at least one year. Long-term instillations can not reduce the progression rate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Higher levels of leptin and homocysteine (Hcy) have been evaluated as risk factors of chronic kidney disease in patients and general population. The aim of this study was to examine gender differences in the associations of leptin and Hcy levels and renal function a representative healthy young population in Taiwan. METHODS The participants aged ≥18 years who underwent health examinations were included and categorized into three groups by gender-specific tertiles of leptin and Hcy levels. Estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) were estimated according to the modified equation of Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD). RESULTS A higher mean Hcy level was found in male subjects than females. Mean values of metabolic syndrome risk factors significantly elevated with increasing leptin levels in both genders. Both male and female subjects with higher plasma Hcy levels were more likely to have a lower eGFR. Plasma Hcy levels were significantly negatively correlated with eGFR in linear regression models adjusted for age and smoking. The associations persisted even after mean arterial pressure and fasting plasma glucose were included for adjustments both genders. Plasma Hcy level was negatively associated eGFR and the association was more profound for females. CONCLUSIONS Leptin levels did not reveal strong or consistent evidence to support a significant association with eGFR. Hcy had a more decisive effect on renal function impairment than leptin and may be considered a more sensitive biomarker for Taiwanese adults.

Abstract
The wide application of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has contributed to the early diagnosis and improved management of prostate cancer (PCa). Accumulating evidence has suggested the involvement of genetic components in regulating serum PSA levels, and several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been identified by genome-wide association studies (GWASs). However, the GWASs' results have the limited power to identify the causal variants and pathways. After the quality control filters, a total of 330,540 genotyped SNPs from one GWAS with 657 PCa-free Caucasian males were included for the identify candidate causal SNPs and pathways (ICSNPathway) analysis. In addition, the genotype-phenotype association analysis has been conducted with the data from HapMap database. Overall, a total of four SNPs in three genes and six pathways were identified by ICSNPathway analysis, which in total provided three hypothetical mechanisms. First, CYP26B1 rs2241057 polymorphism (nonsynonymous coding) which leads to a Leu-to-Ser amino acid shift at position 264, was implicated in the pathways including meiosis, proximal/distal pattern formation, and M phase of meiotic cell cycle. Second, CLIC5 rs3734207 and rs11752816 polymorphisms (regulatory region) to the 2 iron, 2 sulfur cluster binding pathway through regulating expression levels of CLIC5 mRNA. Third, rs4819522 polymorphism (nonsynonymous coding) leads to a Thr-to-Met transition at position 350 of TBX1 and involves in the pathways about gland and endocrine system development. In summary, our results demonstrated four candidate SNPs in three genes (CYP26B1 rs2241057, CISD1 rs2251039, rs2590370, and TBX1 rs4819522 polymorphisms), which were involved in six potential pathways to influence serum PSA levels.

Abstract
Background Transforming growth factor-beta 1(TGF-β1) is involved in the development of acute rejection (AR) episodes in solid organ transplant recipients; and a number of studies have been conducted to investigate the combined effects of human TGF-β1 gene (TGFB1) +869 T/C and +915 G/C polymorphisms on AR risk. However, the results obtained are inconclusive. Methods Eligible studies that investigated the haplotypic association between TGFB1 +869 T/C and +915 G/C polymorphisms and AR risk were comprehensively searched in the PUBMED, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Database. Statistical analyses were performed by using STATA 12.0 and Review Manager 5.0. Results Fourteen eligible studies with 565 AR cases and 1219 non-AR cases were included. Overall, a significantly decreased risk was detected in patients carried with intermediate producer (IP) haplotypes (T/C G/C, T/T G/C, and C/C G/G) and/or low producer (LP) haplotypes (C/C G/C, C/C C/C, T/T C/C, and T/C C/C) compared with high producer (HP) haplotypes (T/T G/G and T/C G/G; IP vs. HP: OR = 0.75, 95% CI, 0.58–0.96, P heterogeneity = 0.238; IP/LP vs. HP: OR = 0.77, 95% CI, 0.61–0.98, P heterogeneity = 0.144). In addition, subgroup analysis by transplant types demonstrated a similar association in patients receiving heart transplant (IP vs. HP: OR = 0.32, 95% CI, 0.14–0.73, P heterogeneity = 0.790; IP/LP vs. HP: OR = 0.41, 95% CI, 0.20–0.85, P heterogeneity = 0.320). Conclusions The current meta-analysis and systematic review indicated that recipient TGFB1 HP haplotypes were significantly associated with an increased risk for AR in solid organ transplant recipients, particularly patients receiving cardiac allograft.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies addressing perioperative natriuretic peptide (NP) levels to predict postoperative major adverse cardiac events (MACE) after major surgery. METHODS We searched MEDLINE and Embase with no language restrictions up to May 2013. The end points were major cardiac complications. We summarized test performance characteristics with the use of forest plots, hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic curves, and bivariate random effects models. RESULTS Of the 662 retrieved articles, 24 studies satisfied the predefined eligibility criteria, including 5438 patients along with 712 (13.1%) events. After major surgery, the diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) of NP in predicting postoperative MACE was 14.3 (95% confidence interval [CI], 9.87-20.7) for overall population, 13.9 (8.43-22.8) for patients undergoing cardiac surgery, and 15.0 (8.84-25.5) for patients undergoing noncardiac surgery. The pooled sensitivity was 0.84 (95% CI, 0.79-0.88) and specificity was 0.76 (95% CI, 0.71-0.81). Postoperative measurement (DOR, 18.9; 7.68-46.3) was associated with higher predictive value than preoperative measurement (DOR, 13.6; 7.68-46.3). Results were similar for a subgroup with the composite outcome including mortality (DOR, 16.4; 10.6-25.5). B-type natriuretic peptide was associated with higher predictive accuracy (area under the summary receiver operating characteristic, 0.84; 0.81-0.87) than N-terminal pro-b-type natriuretic peptide (area under the summary receiver operating characteristic, 0.90; 0.87-0.92). CONCLUSIONS The existing literature suggests that perioperative NP testing have reasonable accuracy and can be useful in perioperative risk stratification. Natriuretic peptide testing has high rule-out value and low rule-in value for predicting postoperative MACE. Medical decisions should be made in the context of these characteristics.

Abstract
With the rapid economic development, a better living condition leads to longer life expectancy, which increased the total population, in particular the elderly group. It may result in increase in the demand of pharmaceuticals for people in domestic use or in hospital. Although most sewage treatment plants or waste water treatment plantsmet the regulatory requirement, there are still many pharmaceuticals removed incompletely and thus discharged to the environment. Therefore, the pharmaceuticals residue draws the public concern because they might cause adverse effects on the organism even human beings. Recently, many studies have published on the source and occurrence as well as the fate of pharmaceuticals all over the world. This paper summarized and reviewed the recent studies on the sources, occurrence, fate and the effects of the most common pharmaceuticals. Finally, it gave the suggestion and risk management for controlling the pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) is a potent proinflammatory cytokine which plays a pivotal role in the antiviral, antiproliferative, and antitumor activities. A T-to-A transition at the position +874 of human IFN-γ gene (IFNG) has been reported to influence the secretion of IFN-γ and affect cancer susceptibility. However, results from published studies on the association between IFNG +874 T/A polymorphism and cancer risk are inconclusive or even controversial. In order to derive a more precise estimation of the association, a meta-analysis of 38 eligible studies including 5,630 cases and 6,096 controls was conducted with odds ratio (OR) and its corresponding 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI). Overall, no significant association was detected in allelic model (A allele vs. T allele-OR = 0.96, 95 % CI, 0.86-1.08), homozygote comparison (AA vs. TT-OR = 0.97, 95 % CI, 0.79-1.21), heterozygote comparison (AT vs. TT-OR = 1.03, 95 % CI, 0.87-1.23), dominant model (AA + AT vs. TT-OR = 1.00, 95 % CI, 0.87-1.15), nor recessive model (AA vs. AT + TT-OR = 0.93, 95 % CI, 0.78-1.12). Further subgroup analyses based on ethnicity, cancer types, and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium status failed to demonstrate any significant relationship except in African population under recessive model (AA vs. AT + TT-OR = 0.68, 95 % CI, 0.47-0.97). In conclusion, the current meta-analysis suggested that IFNG +874 T/A polymorphism may not contribute to cancer susceptibility, and further well-designed studies with large sample size are warranted to validate our conclusion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B/C viruses cause liver disease and metabolic disturbances. AIMS The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between hepatitis B/C infection and metabolic syndrome (MS). METHODS In total, 26,305 subjects were included in this multicentre, cross-sectional study. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures, body mass index and waist circumference were measured. Total cholesterol, high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose and uric acid were determined, and hepatitis B serum antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HCV antibodies were assayed using commercial kits. RESULTS MS was diagnosed in 2712 (23.0%) females, including 131 and 166 positive for HBsAg and anti-HCV respectively. In the men, 4594 (31.6%) were diagnosed with MS, including 326 positive for HBsAg and 131 positive for anti-HCV. No significant difference in the prevalence of MS was identified in any group, except men and women >45 years who were anti-HCV positive. Various metabolic alterations in both men and women >45 years were noted, including waist circumference, body mass index, fasting blood glucose and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Notably, high- and low-density lipoproteins were significantly lower in positive subjects compared to those weakly positive and/or negative for anti-HCV. CONCLUSIONS There were obvious metabolic derangements in patients coinflicted with MS and hepatitis C infections, particularly those >45 years of age. There is a pressing need to identify strategies to improve/resolve metabolic derangements to maximize sustained virological response rates in patients infected with HCV (and potentially HBV).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to determine the association between the duration of high-altitude (>3000 m) pre-exposure and acute mountain sickness (AMS) incidence. METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted on 2 random days each month from April 2007 to March 2008 at Paiyun Lodge (3402 m), Jade Mountain, Taiwan. Demographic data, prior AMS history, symptoms, and scores and the days and times of high-altitude pre-exposure within the preceding 2 months were obtained from lowland (<1500 m) trekkers. RESULTS Totally, 1010 questionnaires were analyzed; 106, 76, and 828 trekkers had pre-exposure lasting at least 3 days (group 1), less than 3 days (group 2), and 0 days (group 3), respectively. Acute mountain sickness incidence was significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1 (21.70%, 35.53%, 37.08%, respectively; P = .008). Logistic regression analysis indicated a significantly lower AMS risk in group 1 (group 1, P = .004; odds ratio [OR], 0.479; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.290-0.791; group 2, P = .226; OR, 0.725; 95% CI, 0.430-1.221). In group 1, 28 and 78 trekkers had single and intermittent multiple pre-exposure, respectively. There was no difference in the incidence or severity of AMS symptoms between single and intermittent multiple pre-exposure (AMS, P = .838; headache, P = .891; dizziness or lightheadedness, P = .414; fatigue and/or weakness, P = .957; gastrointestinal symptoms, P = .257; difficulty sleeping, P = .804; AMS score, P = .796). CONCLUSIONS High-altitude pre-exposure lasting at least 3 days within the preceding 2 months was associated with a significant lower AMS incidence during a subsequent ascent among Jade Mountain trekkers.

Abstract
MicroRNAs play critical roles in tumorigenesis and metastasis. Here, we report the dual functions of miR-182 and miR-203 in our previously described prostate cell model. MiR-182 and miR-203 were completely repressed during epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) from prostate epithelial EP156T cells to the progeny mesenchymal nontransformed EPT1 cells. Re-expression of miR-182 or miR-203 in EPT1 cells and prostate cancer PC3 cells induced mesenchymal to epithelial transition (MET) features. Simultaneously, miR-182 and miR-203 provided EPT1 cells with the ability to self-sufficiency of growth signals, a well-recognized oncogenic feature. Gene expression profiling showed high overlap of the genes affected by miR-182 and miR-203. SNAI2 was identified as a common target of miR-182 and miR-203. Knock-down of SNAI2 in EPT1 cells phenocopied re-expression of either miR-182 or miR-203 regarding both MET and self-sufficiency of growth signals. Strikingly, considerable overlaps of changed genes were found between the re-expression of miR-182/203 and knock-down of SNAI2. Finally, P-cadherin was identified as a direct target of SNAI2. We conclude that miR-182 and miR-203 induce MET features and growth factor independent growth via repressing SNAI2 in prostate cells. Our findings shed new light on the roles of miR-182/203 in cancer related processes.

Abstract
To study the adhesion, proliferation and expression of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) on nano-hydroxyapatite (Nano-HA) bone graft material after transfection of adenovirus-mediated human bone morphogenetic protein-2 expression vector (Ad-BMP-2). BMSCs were transfected using Ad-BMP-2. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot were used to detect BMP-2 expression in transfected cells. After transfection, BMP-2 protein was highly expressed in BMSCs; MTT test assay showed that the Nano-HA bone graft material could not inhibit in vitro proliferation of BMSCs. Ad-BMP-2-transfected BMSCs are well biocompatible with Nano-HA bone graft material, the transfected cells in material can secrete BMP-2 stably for a long time.

Abstract
Body mass index (BMI) is an important diagnostic tool for determining obesity; however, while BMI reflects the influence of body height over body weight, it does not reveal body fat percentage (BF%). We explored whether BF% correlated with risk factors for cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome and whether metabolically obese, normal weight people were at risk for these diseases. A total of 2,867 healthy volunteers participated in this study. Blood pressure, height, weight, waist circumference, BMI, BF%, lipid profile, fasting glucose, uric acid, and lifestyle factors were collected from healthy subjects during their annual health examinations. In both males and females, BF% correlated positively with BMI and waist circumference. Participants were divided into three groups according to BF% and data were compared between groups. The results suggest that BF% correlates with risk factors for cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome for both men and women, and that BF% may be a useful predictor of risk, particularly in metabolically obese, normal weight individuals.

Abstract
Background Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and leptin levels have been independently associated with the cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of the present study was to determine if their serum levels were associated with cardiovascular risk factors or metabolic syndrome as well as their correlation in the Taiwanese population. Methods This retrospective study included 999 subjects (> 18 y), who underwent a physical examination in Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital-Linkou and Chiayi in Taiwan. The associations between CRP and/or leptin levels and cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic syndrome were determined using independent two sample t-tests to detect gender differences and chi-square tests to evaluate differences in frequencies. To compare the means of the variables measured among the four groups (high and low leptin and high and low CRP), analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. Results Both CRP and leptin levels were independently associated with several cardiovascular risk factors, including diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and metabolic syndrome in both men and women (P < 0.05). In addition, a positive correlation between leptin and CRP levels was observed in both genders. Both high-CRP and high-leptin were associated with high blood glucose, waist circumference and serum triglyceride. Whereas increased metabolic syndrome incidence was observed in males with elevated leptin regardless of CRP levels, females with elevated CRP or leptin had increased incidence of metabolic syndrome. Conclusion Both leptin and CRP levels were associated with cardiovascular risk factors as well as metabolic syndrome score in both men and women although gender-specific differences were observed. Thus, CRP and leptin may represent useful biomarkers for predicting the onset of cardiovascular disease or metabolic syndrome in Taiwanese adults. Trial registration IRB/CGMH 100-3514B

MicroRNAs play critical roles in tumorigenesis and metastasis. Here we report the functions of miR203 in prostate cancer based upon an experimental cell culture model. While highly expressed in prostate epithelial cells, miR203 became completely repressed following their epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). Forced re-expression of miR203 in the mesenchymal cells induced many epithelial features, including morphological change in 2D and 3D culture, decreased abilities of invasion and migration, as well as increased epithelial markers and decreased mesenchymal markers. By computer prediction combined with microarray profiling and luciferase reporter target assays, we identified SNAI2 as target of miR203. Knock-down of SNAI2 can mimic the epithelial phenotypes induced by miR203. Most of the affected genes by miR203 were also found to be changed with the same pattern by knock-down of SNAI2. Furthermore, P-cadherin (CDH3), an important epithelial adhesion component, was identified as the downstream target of SNAI2. CDH3-promoter-Luc reporter assay demonstrated that 3 E-boxes in the CDH3 promoter mediated direct targeting by SNAI2. Decreased and increased expression of CDH3 were found in culture cells with overexpression and knock-down of SNAI2, respectively. We concluded that miR203 represses SNAI2, thus activating P-cadherin in induction of epithelial features.

Abstract
The effects of bacteria (Burkholderia cepacia) on plant growth, metal uptake, tolerance index and phenanthrene degradation by a hyperaccumulating plant (Sedum alfredii) were investigated. It was found that inoculation of bacteria did not enhance plant growth and metal uptake; while both metal translocation factor (up to 84% for Cd and 42% for Zn) and tolerance index (up to 23.2% for shoot and 72% for root) were significantly increased. In addition, inoculation of bacteria also alleviated the reductions of bioaccumulation factor and phytoextraction efficiency of As, Cu and Zn with the increasing proportions of polluted soil applied, while they were even increased for Cd and Pb (up to 31.2 and 124%, respectively). Up to 96.3% of phenanthrene was removed in the treatment with both plant and bacteria at the end of the experiment. A positive correlation between metal and P accumulation in plants was observed, it is suggested that high P uptake is directly involved in metal detoxification and leading to an increased P requirement. With the assistance of bacteria, S. alfredii could be able to withstand higher metal concentrations and it could also provide a practical tool for phytoremediation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Differences in disposition between emergency physicians (EPs) have been studied in select patient populations but not in general emergency department (ED) patients. After determining whether a difference existed in admit/discharge decision making of EPs for general ED patients, we focus our study in examining the influence of EP seniority on the decision to discharge ED patients. METHODS In a 1-year retrospective study, we included a convenience sample of all 18 953 adult nontraumatic ED patients. We reviewed the admit/discharge dispositions at each shift made by 16 EPs. EPs were categorized by seniority to determine whether seniority influenced disposition. Three groups had 5, 4, and 7 EPs each, with >10 years, 5 to 9 years, and <5 years of working experience, respectively. RESULTS Patient demographics, triage level, and number of patients per shift did not differ statistically between EPs and each group. The number of discharged patients per shift differed statistically between EPs (P < .001) and each group. The most senior EPs had the lowest discharge rates compared with EPs in intermediate and junior groups. They had lower discharge rates for patients at triage levels 1, 2, and 3 as well as for all patients. However, no difference in unscheduled ED revisit rates was found. CONCLUSIONS EPs vary in their admit/discharge decision making for general ED patients. More importantly, the most senior EPs were found to have the lowest discharge rates compared with their junior colleagues.
