Abstract
OBJECTIVES The oldest old population has become the fastest growing segment with excess need of care and social support, it is crucial to improve the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of these populations. This study seeks to evaluate the health status and to investigate modifiable factors associated with health-related quality of life for oldest old adults in China. DESIGN A cross-sectional population-based study. SETTING Hainan Province in the south of China. PARTICIPANTS 1,278 adults aged 80 years or older. METHODS HRQoL was assessed by three-level EuroQol-5D scale (EQ-5D-3L) and a visual analogue scale (VAS). Demographic and health-related variables were analysed by estimating mean values and standard deviations for continuous variables, percentages and standard deviations for categorical variables. Tobit regressions, ordinary least Squared (OLS) regressions and ordered probit regressions were adopted to determine the associated factors for overall HRQoL and for each health dimension. RESULTS Anxiety/depression was the least reported problem while mobility was the most frequently reported with problem. Female respondents had lower EQ-5D score (0.76 vs. 0.86) and VAS score (66.55 vs. 69.84) than male respondents. Better health-related quality of life was significantly associated with higher BMI, no drinking habit, more leisure activities, living with family members, good sleeping quality, closer social and family connections, fewer numbers of drugs consumed per day, without having hearing or visual impairment, and fewer chronic conditions, after controlling for potential confounders. CONCLUSION Findings from this study suggested that quality of life was not only associated with age-related diseases, but also correlated with a range of health-related lifestyles, and factors indicating social and family support.

Abstract
R-/S-2-(2-hydroxypropanamido) benzoic acid (R-/S-HPABA), marine-derived anti-inflammatory antiplatelet drugs, were initially synthesised in our group. However, preliminary research showed that R-/S-HPABA were eliminated rapidly because of extensive hydroxylation metabolism of phenyl ring in vivo. In order to reduce significant hydroxylation metabolism to improve pharmacological activity and bioavailability, trifluoromethyl group was incorporated into R-/S-HPABA to synthesise R-/S-2-(2-hydroxypropanamido)-5-trifluoromethyl benzoic acid (R-/S-HFBA), respectively. The purposes of this study were to report the synthesis of R-/S-HFBA and compare the anti-inflammatory antiplatelet effect and pharmacokinetic properties of R-/S-HFBA with those of R-/S-HPABA. Carrageenan-induced rat paw edema assay was used for the evaluation of the anti-inflammatory activity. R-/S-HFBA showed better results in inhibiting edema and were able to prolong the anti-inflammatory effect after carrageenan injection. The antiplatelet aggregation activity of R-/S-HFBA and R-/S-HPABA was studied on arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation of rabbit platelet-rich plasma. The aggregation inhibition rate of R-/S-HFBA was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that of R-/S-HPABA, respectively. Molecular docking study revealed that R-/S-HFBA possess more potent binding affinity with COX-1/COX-2 than R-/S-HPABA, respectively, and that the presence of trifluoromethyl group leads to increase in activity of R-/S-HFBA. R-/S-HFBA also afford more favorable pharmacokinetic properties than R-/S-HPABA, respectively, such as higher Cmax, larger AUC0-∞, and longer t1/2, which, as expected, are more metabolically stable.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Veratrum taliense is traditionally used TCMs in Yunnan province of China for pain and inflammation. Previous research and clinical applications have shown that V. taliense had significant analgesic activity. Jevine-type alkaloids were shown to be one of the anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents from V. taliense. However, other types of compounds from V. taliense related to its traditional use remains unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY To identify veratramine-type steroidal alkaloids with analgesic effects from the roots and rhizomes of V. taliense. MATERIALS AND METHODS Compounds were isolated from the roots and rhizomes of V. taliense by chromatographic separation. Their structures were elucidated based on UV, IR, NMR and MS spectra data. Analgesic activity was assessed with acetic acid-induced writhing in mice model. RESULTS Seven new veratramine-type alkaloids were isolated from the roots and rhizomes of V. taliense. They all exhibited significant analgesic activity, of which alkaloids 1 and 4 were more potent antalgic than the well-known analgesic drug, pethidine. CONCLUSIONS The veratramine-type alkaloids from V. taliense may serve as new leads for the discovery of analgesic drugs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the epidemic status and influencing factors of intestinal parasitic diseases among rural children in Henan Province. METHODS According to the Scheme for The National Survey on Current Status of Major Human Parasitic Diseases in China, the survey counties were selected based on the ecological zones and economic levels in Henan Province between 2014 and 2015. Then, the included counties were stratified according to the topography and economic levels. A township was randomly sampled from each stratum, and a village was randomly sampled from each township as the study site. Finally, a total of 104 study sites from 35 counties were enrolled for the survey of intestinal parasitic diseases in children. At least 250 fresh stool samples were collected from each study site for detection of intestinal helminth eggs with the Kato-Katz technique, for the identification of Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale with the fecal culture method, and for the detection of intestinal protozoa trophozoite and cyst with the physiological saline smear and iodine staining techniques. In addition, the Enterobius vermicularis and tapeworm eggs were detected in children aged 3 to 6 years using the adhesive cellophane-tape perianal swab method. RESULTS The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections was 3.21% (214/6 671) among rural children in Henan Province, and the prevalence of intestinal helminthes (2.62%, 175/6 671) was higher than that of intestinal protozoa (0.60%, 40/6 671). A total of 12 species of intestinal parasites were found, including 4 nematodes species, one trematode species, and 7 protozoa species, and the highest infection was seen in E. vermicularis (2.47%, 161/6 671). Among the four ecological zones in Henan Province, the greatest prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections was detected among children in the Qinba Mountain Ecological Zone (5.85%, 90/1 538). There was no gender-specific difference in the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in children (P > 0.05); however, there were age- (χ2 = 32.762, P < 0.05) and education level-specific differences in the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in children (χ2 = 67.507, P < 0.05), with the greatest prevalence of E. vermicularis infection seen in all species of intestinal parasites in children at all age groups. Multivariate non-conditional logistic regression analysis showed that high education level, high coverage of harmless toilets, drinking tap water and deworming were protective factors for intestinal parasitic infections in children in Henan Province. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections appeared a tendency towards a gradual decline among children in Henan Province as compared to the previous two surveys. CONCLUSIONS The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections shows a tendency towards a remarkable decline among children in Henan Province. E. vermicularis infection should be given a priority for future parasitic disease control activities among rural children in Henan Province.

Abstract
Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck is a popular fruit cultivated around the world, and its peels are sometimes used for the treatment of cough, abdominal pain, and indigestion in China. However, the peel is discarded after fruit consumption in most cases, and its chemical constituents and biological activities have not been validated before. The present study focused on evaluation of the chemical and pharmacological profile of coumarins from peels of C. grandis against inflammation. The extracts and phytochemicals from peels of C. grandis were prepared, and anti-inflammatory activities were carried out in vivo and in vitro, including inhibiting xylene-induced ear edema and carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice and the production of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin 1β, prostaglandin 2, and tumor-necrosis factor α) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Results indicated that methanolic extract, ethyl acetate fraction, and four major coumarins (compounds 7, 8, 13, and 16) inhibited swelling induced by xylene and carrageenan, separately, in vivo. Furthermore, 18 coumarins inhibited inflammatory factor secretion in macrophages primed by LPS, in which compounds 4, 6, 7, 10, 17 showed the most pronounced change, which were comparable to dexamethasone. In summary, peel of C. grandis showed an anti-inflammatory effect and coumarin compounds were responsible for regulating inflammatory mediators and cytokines, which might provide a novel nutritional strategy for inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the prevalence of hypertension and quantitative relationship between family history and the risk of hypertension among rural residents living in Hanzhong District, Shaanxi province. Methods: A multistage random sampling survey was conducted. Data on the characteristics related to hypertension were collected and physical examination was conducted. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between family history and hypertension. Results: A total number of 2 817 rural residents aged 18-80 with complete information were recruited. The crude prevalence of hypertension was 33.7%. Results from the logistic regression analysis showed that the OR was 2.06 (95% CI: 1.70-2.50) between family histories with or without hypertension. When the first-degree relatives were with the degrees of family history of hypertention as Ⅰ, Ⅱ or Ⅲ, the OR values of hypertension appeared as 1.83 (95% CI: 1.47-2.27), 2.94 (95% CI: 2.09-4.13) and 4.48 (95% CI: 2.17-9.27) respectively. Either father or mother having the positive family history of hypertension, the corresponding OR values appeared as 2.50 (95% CI: 1.84-3.40), 1.61(95% CI: 1.22-2.12) seen in mothers. However, when both father and mother having the family history of hypertention, the OR value was seen 2.82 (95%CI: 1.76-4.51) in the mothers. Conclusion: Family history appeared as a risk factor for hypertension. The number of first-degree relatives with positive family history showed a dose-response relationship to the occurrence of hypertension. Family history in both father or mother might further affect the incidence of hypertension.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the regulation of IL-25 on type Ⅱ innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) activation in the pathogenesis of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS). Methods: Nasal mucosa tissues were collected from 16 AFRS patients and 12 patients, who underwent nasal endoscopic surgery for cerebrospinal rhinorrhea or skull base benign tumor during the period from June 2016 to June 2017 in Department of Rhinology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. Firstly, flow cytometry was used to detect ILC2s in nasal mucosa of both groups. Secondly, the expression of IL-25, IL-5 and IL-13 in nasal mucosa was detected by immunofluorescence and/or Western Blot assay. Finally, fungal extracts, IL-25 and glucocorticoids were used to stimulate nasal mucosal epithelial cells and tissues in vitro respectively to detect the regulatory effect of IL-25 on ILC2s. SPSS 16.0 software was used to analyze the data. Results: The prevalence of ILC2s in nasal tissues was higher in patients with AFRS than those of the control group ((3.85±1.52)%(Mean±SD) vs (0.32±0.10)%, U=9.00, P<0.05). There was a positive correlation between the prevalence of ILC2s and the number of eosinophils in nasal mucosa of patients with ARFS (r=0.80, P<0.05). The expression of IL-25, IL-5 and IL-13 in nasal mucosa epithelium of AFRS group was significantly higher than that of the control group (0.49±0.13 vs 0.23±0.09, 0.23±0.05 vs 0.10±0.04, 0.31±0.08 vs 0.14±0.07, t value was 5.90, 7.21, 5.69, respectively, all P<0.05). Fungal stimulation enhanced the expression of IL-25 protein in nasal epithelial cells of both groups (0.67±0.19 vs 0.25±0.12 (AFRS group), 0.62±0.17 vs 0.27±0.16 (control group), q value was 8.65, 9.26, respectively, all P<0.05). In the IL-25 stimulated nasal mucosa at a concentration of 1, 10 and 100 ng/ml, the expression level of retinoid acid-related orphan receptor α (RORα) mRNA was 2.07±1.53, 5.06±0.93, 7.38±2.30, respectively; the expression level of GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) mRNA was 3.58±1.29, 6.14±1.55, 7.64±2.28, respectively; the expression level of IL-5 protein was 0.21±0.06, 0.32±0.06, 0.38±0.10, respectively; the expression level of IL-13 was 0.52±0.13, 0.69±0.22, 0.82±0.21, respectively, which were significantly higher than that in the unstimulated nasal mucosa (1.00±0.00, 1.00±0.00, 0.11±0.05, 0.35±0.15, F value was 63.45, 59.27, 49.35, 20.20, respectively, all P<0.05). The up-regulation could be inhibited by dexamethasone (F value was 89.20, 92.47, 99.63, 49.82, respectively, all P<0.05). Conclusions: Epithelial-derived IL-25 up-regulates the expression of IRC2s-dependent transcription factors RORα and GATA3 mRNA, which are positively correlated with elevated IL-13 and IL-5 expression levels in tissues, may be involved in AFRS inflammatory response, and are inhibited by glucocorticoids.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the optimal position in application of acoustic pharyngometry to detect the pharyngeal condition and to assess its therapeutic effect on obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS). Method: Eight adult males were assigned to the normal group, and 57 male patients with OSAHS diagnosed by polysomnograhy(PSG) were assigned to the snoring group. Of the snoring group, 11 patients who were diagnosed severe OSAHS underwent low-temperature plasma uvulopaltopharyngoplasty(UPPP) and coblationchanneling of the tongue(CCT), were assigned to the operation subgroup; 8 patients underwent continuous positive airway pressure(CPAP), which was assigned to the CPAP subgroup. And remainders underwent conservative treatment, including weight loss and position change. Acoustic pharyngometry (three positions including sitting position, supine position and lateral position) and PSG exam were performed in all participants. Additionally, acoustic pharyngometry under three positions was conducted again in patients in the operation and CPAP subgroups three months after treatment. Result: The minimum cross-sectional area was negatively associated with both AHI and the percentage of time with oxygen saturation below 90%(SIT90)( P<0.01). The correlation coefficient of the minimum crosssectional area insupine position with AHI and SIT90 were r=-0.569,r=-0.478, respectively. Under supine position, the minimum crosssectional area was negatively correlated with body mass index(BMI)(r=-0.265, P=0.033), and the minimum crosssectional area was negatively associated with neck circumference(r=-0.309, P=0.012). The minimum cross-sectional area was significantly increased after treatment of OSAHS(both operation and CPAP), which was statistically different before and after treatment compared to the control group(P<0.01). Conclusion: ①The minimum cross-sectional area is significantly correlated with AHI and SIT90, respectively. The acoustic pharyngometry can be used to screen OSAHS patients. ②In this study, the minimum cross-sectional area under supine position is significantly smaller than that under sitting position. In addition, the minimum cross-sectional area under supine position harbored a better correlation with AHI and SIT90, which could better reflect the narrowness of pharyngeal cavity during sleep. ③Acoustic pharyngometry could be a simple, rapid and non-invasive technique that can objectively evaluate the efficacy of surgical and CPAP methods, and provided a more favorable basis for future clinical work..

Abstract
Two new Tricholoma terpenoids, tricholopardins A and B, were isolated from the fruiting bodies of the basidiomycetes Tricholoma pardinum. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, as well as electronic circular dichroism and optical rotatory dispersion calculations. Tricholopardin A potently inhibited nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264.7 macrophages with an IC50 of 0.08 μM. Its anti-inflammatory effects on three inflammatory mediators were also evaluated. A plausible biosynthetic pathway for these products is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alstonia scholaris (Apocynaceae) was reported to be a rich source of indole alkaloids, which exhibited remarkably bioactivities. The leaf of A. scholaris has been used in 'dai' ethno-medicine for treatment of respiratory diseases, and the defined indole alkaloids from leaf of A. scholaris has been registered as investigational new botanical drug (No. 2011L01436) and was approved for phase I/II clinical trials by China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA). PURPOSE The aim of the trial is to evaluate the safety and explore the relationship of dosing frequency and pharmacokinetics after oral administration of capsule of alkaloids from leaf of A. scholaris (CALAS) at different doses. METHODS In this randomized, open-labelled, single-center clinical trial, the safety and pharmacokinetics of CALAS were assessed in eligible healthy Chinese volunteers after oral administration of different doses. Each volunteer (n = 10 per group) received single dose of CALAS from 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg to 120 mg orally. The pharmacokinetics of CALAS was investigated in healthy Chinese subjects' plasma by a fully-validated LC-MS/MS method. Safety was assessed biochemically and clinically throughout the study, and drug re-excitation research was conducted to verify the correlation between investigational product and minor adverse events. The trial was registered on August 26, 2015 (http://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=11736), number ChiCTR-IPR-15006976. RESULTS 40 subjects completed the study, and as a result, vallesamine had the highest concentration in plasma of healthy volunteers, and the AUC exposure level in each compounds in turn is vallesamine > scholaricine > 19-epischolaricine > picrinine. For the safety evaluation of CALAS, two cases of minor adverse events were observed during the trial, but the drug re-excitation research indicated that these two adverse events were related to the individual's physiological variation. CONCLUSION Pharmacokinetic characteristics of each ingredient showed different patterns. 19-epischolaricine, vallesamine and picrinine were match to the linear pharmacokinetic characteristics, but scholaricine conformed to the characteristics of nonlinear pharmacokinetics. The CALAS was safe in healthy subjects under the current dose regimen.

Abstract
Objective: To make three-dimensional prototyped models of nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses for endoscopic skills training and teaching and to verify and evaluate the fidelity of the models. Methods: Imaging data of a patient with nasal septum deviation was selected for prototyping the nasal cavities model, and the imaging data of a patient with chronic rhinosinusitis who underwent the endoscopic sinus surgery 4 months ago was selected for the paranasal sinuses model. Both patients came from the Department of Rhinology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. The models were printed by the desktop-level printer based on the fused deposition modeling (FDM). The evaluations of anatomical structures and prespecified tasks on the simulators were completed by 5 residents and 5 experts of Rhinology. The models were evaluated by survey ratings based on a 5-point Likert scale. The average time to complete each task was calculated.Mann-Whitney nonparametric test was used to assess the differences between experts and residents groups. The statistical significance level was set at P<0.05. Results: All the components of the two models were prototyped in 24 h. For the nasal cavities model, the scores of each anatomical structure were more than 4.0. As to the paranasal sinuses model, except for the frontal sinus (3.6), the scores of each anatomical structure were more than 4.0. All the participants who performed the prespecified tasks evaluated the models well (>4.0). With the nasal cavity simulator, the experts completed the tasks (nasal cavity and nasopharyngeal endoscopy, removal of nasal foreign body, nasal packing, pledget insertion), and the other tasks (the nasal cavity and nasopharyngeal endoscopy, identification of ostiums of paranasal sinuses, maxillary sinus debridement with 70° nasal endoscopy) were completed with paranasal sinus model. The average time to complete each task by experts group and residents group (M (P(25), P(75))) were 10.3 (10.0, 10.7) s vs 17.1 (14.6, 20.7) s, 2.1 (2.0, 2.2) s vs 3.4 (2.6, 4.7) s, 30.1 (27.8, 32.8) s vs 59.2 (52.0, 65.4) s, 54.8 (50.1, 63.2) s vs 92.2 (79.3, 106.9) s, 9.3 (8.7, 9.9) s vs 14.5 (13.3, 14.9) s, 20.1 (19.3, 21.2) s vs 41.9 (35.5, 45.1) s, 31.1 (28.8, 35.2) s vs 52.8 (47.7, 56.3) s, respectively, and the average time to complete each task was shorter for the experts group than for the residents (U value was 0, 1.000, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, respectively, all P<0.05). Conclusion: The models of nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses made by our desktop-level FDM 3D-printer are useful for endoscopic training skills.

Green tea ( Camellia sinensis) aqueous extract alleviates postmenopausal osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats and prevents RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis in vitro. Food Nutr Res 2018; 62:1478. Abstract
Background Green tea (Camelliasinensis [L.] Kuntze) belongs to the plant family Theaceae and is mainly distributed in East Asia, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. This plant has been proven to be beneficial to human health, and green tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world after water. However, until now, the effect of green tea aqueous extract (GTE) upon postmenopausal osteoporosis has remained unclear. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of GTE on estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis and explored the possible mechanisms in vivo and in vitro. Materials and methods Ovariectomized (OVX) female rats were orally administered with GTE at doses of 60, 120, and 370 mg kg−1 for 13 consecutive weeks. The biochemical parameters, bone gla protein, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, estrogen, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6 in blood samples were detected, and histological change in bones was analyzed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of GTE on osteoclast formation were explored in RAW 264.7 cells induced by receptor activation of the nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL). Results The results showed that GTE could increase bone mass and inhibit trabecular bone loss in OVX rats. Furthermore, real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis from in vitro experiments also showed that GTE reduced the mRNA expression of osteoclast-associated genes such as cathepsin K (cath-K), c-Fos, matrix metalloproteinase 9, nuclear factor of activated T cells cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase. In addition, GTE caused a reduction in the protein levels of NFATc1, c-Fos, c-src and cath-K. Conclusion Evidence from both animal models and in vitro experiments suggested that GTE might effectively ameliorate the symptoms of osteoporosis in OVX rats and inhibit RANKL-induced osteoclast-specific gene and protein expression.
