Polyaniline coated MOF-derived Mn2O3 nanorods for efficient hybrid capacitive deionization

Mn-based oxides are efficient pseudocapacitive electrode materials and have been investigated for capacitive deionization (CDI). However, their poor conductivity seriously affects their desalination performance. In this work, polyaniline coated Mn₂O₃ nanorods (PANI/Mn₂O₃) are synthesized by oxidizing a Mn-based metal organic framework (MOF) and subsequent in-situ chemical polymerization. The polyaniline not only acts as a conductive network for faradaic reactions of Mn₂O₃, but also enhances the desalination rate. PANI/Mn₂O₃ has a specific capacitance of 87 F g^-1 (at 1 A g^-1), superior to that of Mn₂O₃ nanorod (52 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1). The hybrid CDI cell constructed with a PANI/Mn₂O₃ cathode and an active carbon anode shows a high desalination capacity of 21.6 mg g^-1, superior recyclability with only 11.3% desalination capacity decay after 30 desalination cycles and fast desalination rate of 2.2 mg g^-1 min^-1. PANI/Mn₂O₃ is a potential candidate for high performance CDI applications.

Inorganic material-based Janus nanosheets: asymmetrically functionalized 2D-inorganic nanomaterials

During the past decade, various inorganic material-based Janus nanosheets have been prepared and their applications have been proposed. Inorganic material-based Janus nanosheets have various advantages over polymer-based Janus nanosheets, including the maintenance of their characteristic two-dimensional shape, and are expected to be applied as unique functional materials. Methods for regioselective functionalization of the two sides of the individual nanosheets are extremely important for the development of inorganic material-based Janus nanosheets. In this review, the preparation methods and applications of inorganic material-based Janus nanosheets are summarized from the point of view of inorganic nanosheet functionalization.

Expeditious Electrochemical Synthesis of Mesoporous Chalcogenide Flakes: Mesoporous Cu2 Se as a Potential High-Rate Anode for Sodium-Ion Battery

Nanostructured copper selenide (Cu₂ Se) attracts much interest as it shows outstanding performance as thermoelectric, photo-thermal, and optical material. The mesoporous structure is also a promising morphology to obtain better performance for electrochemical and catalytic applications, thanks to its high surface area. A simple one-step electrochemical method is proposed for mesoporous chalcogenides synthesis. The synthesized Cu₂ Se material has two types of mesopores (9 and 18 nm in diameter), which are uniformly distributed inside the flakes. These materials are also implemented for sodium (Na) ion battery (NIB) anode as a proof of concept. The electrode employing the mesoporous Cu₂ Se exhibits superior and more stable specific capacity as a NIB anode compared to the non-porous samples. The electrode also exhibits excellent rate tolerance at each current density, from 100 to 1000 mA g^-1 . It is suggested that the mesoporous structure is advantageous for the insertion of Na ions inside the flakes. Electrochemical analysis indicates that the mesoporous electrode possesses more prominent diffusion-controlled kinetics during the sodiation-desodiation process, which contributes to the improvement of Na-ion storage performance.

Noble-Metal-Based Hollow Mesoporous Nanoparticles: Synthesis Strategies and Applications

As second-generation mesoporous materials, mesoporous noble metals (NMs) are of significant interest for their wide applications in catalysis, sensing, bioimaging, and biotherapy owing to their structural and metallic features. The introduction of interior hollow cavity into NM-based mesoporous nanoparticles (MNs), which subtly integrate hierarchical hollow and mesoporous structure into one nanoparticle, produces a new type of hollow MNs (HMNs). Benefiting from their higher active surface, better electron/mass transfer, optimum electronic structure, and nanoconfinement space, NM-based HMNs exhibit their high efficiency in enhancing catalytic activity and stability and tuning catalytic selectivity. In this review, recent progress in the design, synthesis, and catalytic applications of NM-based HMNs is summarized, including the findings of the groups. Five main strategies for synthesizing NM-based HMNs, namely silica-assisted surfactant-templated nucleation, surfactant-templated sequential nucleation, soft "dual"-template, Kirkendall effect in synergistic template, and galvanic-replacement-assisted surfactant template, are described in detail. In addition, the applications in ethanol oxidation electrocatalysis and hydrogenation reactions are discussed to highlight the high activity, enhanced stability, and optimal selectivity of NM-based HMNs in (electro)catalysis. Finally, the further outlook that may lead the directions of synthesis and applications of NM-based HMNs is prospected.

Soft Template-Based Synthesis of Mesoporous Phosphorus- and Boron-Codoped NiFe-Based Alloys for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Controlling the morphology, composition, and crystalline phase of mesoporous nonnoble metal catalysts is essential for improving their performance. Herein, well-defined P- and B-codoped NiFe alloy mesoporous nanospheres (NiFeB-P MNs) with an adjustable Ni/Fe ratio and large mesopores (11 nm) are synthesized via soft-template-based chemical reduction and a subsequent phosphine-vapor-based phosphidation process. Earth-abundant NiFe-based materials are considered promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of their low cost and high intrinsic catalytic activity. The resulting NiFeB-P MNs exhibit a low OER overpotential of 252 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 , which is significantly smaller than that of B-doped NiFe MNs (274 mV) and commercial RuO₂ (269 mV) in alkaline electrolytes. Thus, this work highlights the practicality of designing mesoporous nonnoble metal structures and the importance of incorporating P in metallic-B-based alloys to modify their electronic structure for enhancing their intrinsic activity.

Integrated, Transparent Silicon Carbide Electronics and Sensors for Radio Frequency Biomedical Therapy

The integration of micro- and nanoelectronics into or onto biomedical devices can facilitate advanced diagnostics and treatments of digestive disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. Recent developments in gastrointestinal endoscopy and balloon catheter technologies introduce promising paths for minimally invasive surgeries to treat these diseases. However, current therapeutic endoscopy systems fail to meet requirements in multifunctionality, biocompatibility, and safety, particularly when integrated with bioelectronic devices. Here, we report materials, device designs, and assembly schemes for transparent and stable cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC)-based bioelectronic systems that facilitate tissue ablation, with the capability for integration onto the tips of endoscopes. The excellent optical transparency of SiC-on-glass (SoG) allows for direct observation of areas of interest, with superior electronic functionalities that enable multiple biological sensing and stimulation capabilities to assist in electrical-based ablation procedures. Experimental studies on phantom, vegetable, and animal tissues demonstrated relatively short treatment times and low electric field required for effective lesion removal using our SoG bioelectronic system. In vivo experiments on an animal model were conducted to explore the versatility of SoG electrodes for peripheral nerve stimulation, showing an exciting possibility for the therapy of neural disorders through electrical excitation. The multifunctional features of SoG integrated devices indicate their high potential for minimally invasive, cost-effective, and outcome-enhanced surgical tools, across a wide range of biomedical applications.

Electrochemical preparation of nano/micron structure transition metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Electrochemical water splitting is a promising technology for hydrogen production and sustainable energy conversion, but the existing electrolytic cells lack a sufficient number of robust and highly active anodic electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Electrochemical synthesis technology provides a feasible route for the preparation of independent OER electrodes with high utilization of active sites, fast mass transfer, and a simple preparation process. A comprehensive review of the electrochemical synthesis of nano/microstructure transition metal-based OER materials is provided. First, some fundamentals of electrochemical synthesis are introduced, including electrochemical synthesis strategies, electrochemical synthesis substrates, the electrolyte used in electrochemical synthesis, and the combination of electrochemical synthesis and other synthesis methods. Second, the morphology and properties of electrochemical synthetic materials are summarized and introduced from the viewpoint of structural design. Then, the latest progress regarding the development of transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts is reviewed, including the classification of metals/alloys, oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, phosphides, selenides, and other transition metal compounds. In addition, the oxygen evolution mechanism and rate-determining steps of transition metal-based catalysts are also discussed. Finally, the advantages, challenges, and opportunities regarding the application of electrochemical techniques in the synthesis of transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts are summarized. This review can provide inspiration for researchers and promote the development of water splitting technology.

Cu-based MOF-derived architecture with Cu/Cu2O nanospheres anchored on porous carbon nanosheets for efficient capacitive deionization

The design of high-performance electrode materials with excellent desalination ability has always been a research goal for efficient capacitive deionization (CDI). Herein, a hybrid architecture with Cu/Cu₂O nanospheres anchored on porous carbon nanosheets (Cu/Cu₂O/C) was first synthesized by pyrolyzing a two-dimensional (2D) Cu-based metal-organic framework and then evaluated as a cathode for hybrid CDI. The as-prepared Cu/Cu₂O/C exhibits a hierarchically porous structure with a high specific surface area of 305 m² g^-1 and large pore volume of 0.55 cm³ g^-1, which is favorable to accelerating ion migration and diffusion. The porous carbon nanosheet matrix with enhanced conductivity will facilitate the Faradaic reactions of Cu/Cu₂O nanospheres during the desalination process. The Cu/Cu₂O/C hybrid architecture displays a high specific capacitance of 142.5 F g^-1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s^-1 in 1 M NaCl solution. The hybrid CDI constructed using the Cu/Cu₂O/C cathode and a commercial activated carbon anode exhibits a high desalination capacity of 16.4 mg g^-1 at an operation voltage of 1.2 V in 500 mg L^-1 NaCl solution. Additionally, the hybrid CDI exhibits a good cycling stability with 18.3% decay in the desalination capacity after 20 electrosorption-desorption cycles. Thus, the Cu/Cu₂O/C composite is expected to be a promising cathode material for hybrid CDI.

Glycaemic management in a child with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency undergoing cardiac surgery with hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass

There is a lack of evidence regarding the optimal intra-operative glycaemic level of patients with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency to prevent cerebral oedema due to protein catabolism and hyperammonemia. We describe a case of a two-year-old girl with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency who underwent cardiac surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. A high-dose dextrose infusion to prevent protein catabolism was given throughout surgery, which caused uncontrollable hyperglycaemia unresponsive to high-dose insulin administration. Factors contributing to the hyperglycaemia may have included surgical stress, steroid administration and hypothermia. During invasive surgery, anaesthetists should carefully adjust the rates of dextrose and insulin infusions, guided by close monitoring of blood ammonia, glucose and lactate.

Hydrogel Nanoarchitectonics: An Evolving Paradigm for Ultrasensitive Biosensing

The integration of nanoarchitectonics and hydrogel into conventional biosensing platforms offers the opportunities to design physically and chemically controlled and optimized soft structures with superior biocompatibility, better immobilization of biomolecules, and specific and sensitive biosensor design. The physical and chemical properties of 3D hydrogel structures can be modified by integrating with nanostructures. Such modifications can enhance their responsiveness to mechanical, optical, thermal, magnetic, and electric stimuli, which in turn can enhance the practicality of biosensors in clinical settings. This review describes the synthesis and kinetics of gel networks and exploitation of nanostructure-integrated hydrogels in biosensing. With an emphasis on different integration strategies of hydrogel with nanostructures, this review highlights the importance of hydrogel nanostructures as one of the most favorable candidates for developing ultrasensitive biosensors. Moreover, hydrogel nanoarchitectonics are also portrayed as a promising candidate for fabricating next-generation robust biosensors.

Long-Lasting Self-Healing Surface Dewettability through the Rapid Regeneration of Surface Morphologies

The development of self-healing systems for artificial superhydrophobic materials/surfaces based on the reconstruction of surface topologies rather than chemical makeup has been much less established. In this article, we report for the first time a simple and straightforward method for self-repairing surface dewettability over a long period of time by rapidly regenerating surface microstructures. We selected paraffin wax as a matrix for methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) having strong reactivity with moisture/water and simply mixed them. When the as-prepared MTCS-loaded paraffin wax surfaces were exposed to air for a few hours, they spontaneously became highly hydrophobic with water contact angles of about 150° due to the formation of disordered surface microstructures. The use of paraffin wax with a few angstrom-scale space as a matrix was found to be more effective than the use of poly(dimethylsiloxane) with nanometer-size porosity in preventing both evaporation and degradation of MTCS's chemical reactivity for a long period. Therefore, for about 1 month, even after the surface microstructures were completely destroyed, surface dewettability could be self-repaired by rapidly regenerating surface morphologies. In addition, chemical damage by UV/ozone exposure could also be repeatably self-healed by the reconstruction of surface chemical makeup. We thus expect that this simple approach could provide future insights to impart the self-healing ability of manmade superhydrophobic materials/surfaces against chemical and physical damages.

Heterocyclic Conjugated Polymer Nanoarchitectonics with Synergistic Redox-Active Sites for High-Performance Aluminium Organic Batteries

The development of cost‐effective and long‐life rechargeable aluminium ion batteries (AIBs) shows promising prospects for sustainable energy storage applications. Here, we report a heteroatom π‐conjugated polymer featuring synergistic C=O and C=N active centres as a new cathode material in AIBs using a low‐cost AlCl₃/urea electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the fused C=N sites in the polymer not only benefit good π‐conjugation but also enhance the redox reactivity of C=O sites, which enables the polymer to accommodate four AlCl₂(urea)₂⁺ per repeating unit. By integrating the polymer with carbon nanotubes, the hybrid cathode exhibits a high discharge capacity and a long cycle life (295 mAh g⁻¹ at 0.1 A g⁻¹ and 85 mAh g⁻¹ at 1 A g⁻¹ over 4000 cycles). The achieved specific energy density of 413 Wh kg⁻¹ outperforms most Al–organic batteries reported to date. The synergistic redox‐active sites strategy sheds light on the rational design of organic electrode materials.

Heterointerface optimization in a covalent organic framework-on-MXene for high-performance capacitive deionization of oxygenated saline water

Capacitive deionization (CDI) provides a promising option for affordable freshwater while simultaneously storing energy, but its large-scale application is usually limited owing to the poor performance of conventional materials in natural (oxygenated) saline water. Herein, we report heterointerface optimization in a covalent organic framework (COF)-on-MXene heterostructure achieving a high CDI performance for desalination of oxygenated saline water. The 2D heterostructure with the optimal core-shell architecture inherits the high conductivity and reversible ion intercalation/deintercalation ability of MXene, and the hierarchical porous structure, large porosity, and extraordinary redox capacity of COFs. Thanks to the heterointerface optimization, the MXene@COF heterostructure exhibits a very stable cycling performance over 100 CDI cycles with a maximum NaCl adsorption capacity of 53.1 mg g^-1 in oxygenated saline water, among the state-of-the-art values for CDI electrodes and also exceeding those of most MXene-based or 2D materials. This study highlights the importance of heterointerface optimization in MXene-organic 2D heterostructures to promote CDI of natural (oxygenated) saline water.

New Trends in Nanoarchitectured SERS Substrates: Nanospaces, 2D Materials, and Organic Heterostructures

This article reviews recent fabrication methods for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates with a focus on advanced nanoarchitecture based on noble metals with special nanospaces (round tips, gaps, and porous spaces), nanolayered 2D materials, including hybridization with metallic nanostructures (NSs), and the contemporary repertoire of nanoarchitecturing with organic molecules. The use of SERS for multidisciplinary applications has been extensively investigated because the considerably enhanced signal intensity enables the detection of a very small number of molecules with molecular fingerprints. Nanoarchitecture strategies for the design of new NSs play a vital role in developing SERS substrates. In this review, recent achievements with respect to the special morphology of metallic NSs are discussed, and future directions are outlined for the development of available NSs with reproducible preparation and well-controlled nanoarchitecture. Nanolayered 2D materials are proposed for SERS applications as an alternative to the noble metals. The modern solutions to existing limitations for their applications are described together with the state-of-the-art in bio/environmental SERS sensing using 2D materials-based composites. To complement the existing toolbox of plasmonic inorganic NSs, hybridization with organic molecules is proposed to improve the stability of NSs and selectivity of SERS sensing by hybridizing with small or large organic molecules.

Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Graphene Mesh: a Robust Scaffold for Highly Exposed Fe-N4 Active Sites toward an Excellent Oxygen Reduction Catalyst in Acid Media

This study demonstrates a special ultrathin N-doped graphene nanomesh (NGM) as a robust scaffold for highly exposed Fe-N₄ active sites. Significantly, the pore sizes of the NGM can be elaborately regulated by adjusting the thermal exfoliation conditions to simultaneously disperse and anchor Fe-N₄ moieties, ultimately leading to highly loaded Fe single-atom catalysts (SA-Fe-NGM) and a highly exposed morphology. The SA-Fe-NGM is found to deliver a superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in acidic media (half-wave potential = 0.83 V vs RHE) and a high power density of 634 mW cm^-2 in the H₂/O₂ fuel cell test. First-principles calculations further elucidate the possible catalytic mechanism for ORR based on the identified Fe-N₄ active sites and the pore size distribution analysis. This work provides a novel strategy for constructing highly exposed transition metals and nitrogen co-doped carbon materials (M-N-C) catalysts for extended electrocatalytic and energy storage applications.

Zwitterionic iodonium species afford halogen bond-based porous organic frameworks

Porous architectures characterized by parallel channels arranged in honeycomb or rectangular patterns are identified in two polymorphic crystals of a zwitterionic 4-(aryliodonio)-benzenesulfonate. The channels are filled with disordered water molecules which can be reversibly removed on heating. Consistent with the remarkable strength and directionality of the halogen bonds (XBs) driving the crystal packing formation, the porous structure is stable and fully preserved on almost quantitative removal and readsorption of water. The porous systems described here are the first reported cases of one-component 3D organic frameworks whose assembly is driven by XB only (XOFs). These systems are a proof of concept for the ability of zwitterionic aryliodonium tectons in affording robust one-component 3D XOFs. The high directionality and strength of the XBs formed by these zwitterions and the geometrical constraints resulting from the tendency of their hypervalent iodine atoms to act as bidentate XB donors might be key factors in determining this ability.

Tailoring the Surface and Interface Structures of Copper-Based Catalysts for Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 to Ethylene and Ethanol

Electrochemical CO₂ reduction to valuable ethylene and ethanol offers a promising strategy to lower CO₂ emissions while storing renewable electricity. Cu-based catalysts have shown the potential for CO₂ -to-ethylene/ethanol conversion, but still suffer from low activity and selectivity. Herein, the effects of surface and interface structures in Cu-based catalysts for CO₂ -to-ethylene/ethanol production are systematically discussed. Both reactions involve three crucial steps: formation of CO intermediate, CC coupling, and hydrodeoxygenation of C₂ intermediates. For ethylene, the key step is CC coupling, which can be enhanced by tailoring the surface structures of catalyst such as step sites on facets, Cu⁰ /Cu^δ+ species and nanopores, as well as the optimized molecule-catalyst and electrolyte-catalyst interfaces further promoting the higher ethylene production. While the controllable hydrodeoxygenation of C₂ intermediate is important for ethanol, which can be achieved by tuning the stability of oxygenate intermediates through the metallic cluster induced special atomic configuration and bimetallic synergy induced the double active sites on catalyst surface. Additionally, constraining CO coverage by the complex-catalyst interface and stabilizing CO bond by N-doped carbon/Cu interface can also enhance the ethanol selectivity. The structure-performance relationships will provide the guidance for the design of Cu-based catalysts for highly efficient reduction of CO₂ .

A General Concurrent Template Strategy for Ordered Mesoporous Intermetallic Nanoparticles with Controllable Catalytic Performance

We report a general concurrent template strategy for precise synthesis of mesoporous Pt-/Pd-based intermetallic nanoparticles with desired morphology and ordered mesostructure. The concurrent template not only supplies a mesoporous metal seed for re-crystallization growth of atomically ordered intermetallic phases with unique atomic stoichiometry but also provides a nanoconfinement environment for nanocasting synthesis of mesoporous nanoparticles with ordered mesostructure and rhombic dodecahedral morphology under elevated temperature. Using the selective hydrogenation of 3-nitrophenylacetylene as a proof-of-concept catalytic reaction, mesoporous intermetallic PtSn nanoparticles exhibited remarkably controllable intermetallic phase-dependent catalytic selectivity and excellent catalytic stability. This work provides a very powerful strategy for precise preparation of ordered mesoporous intermetallic nanocrystals for application in selective catalysis and fuel cell electrocatalysis.

Mesoporous PdBi nanocages for enhanced electrocatalytic performances by all-direction accessibility and steric site activation

An effective yet simple approach was developed to synthesize mesoporous PdBi nanocages for electrochemical applications. This technique relies on the subtle utilization of the hydrolysis of a metal salt to generate precipitate cores in situ as templates for navigating the growth of mesoporous shells with the assistance of polymeric micelles. The mesoporous PdBi nanocages are then obtained by excavating vulnerable cores and regulating the crystals of mesoporous metallic skeletons. The resultant mesoporous PdBi nanocages exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance toward the ethanol oxidation reaction with a mass activity of 3.56 A mg-1_Pd, specific activity of 17.82 mA cm-2 and faradaic efficiency of up to 55.69% for C1 products.

Plasma-Induced Nanocrystalline Domain Engineering and Surface Passivation in Mesoporous Chalcogenide Semiconductor Thin Films

The synthesis of highly crystalline mesoporous materials is key to realizing high‐performance chemical and biological sensors and optoelectronics. However, minimizing surface oxidation and enhancing the domain size without affecting the porous nanoarchitecture are daunting challenges. Herein, we report a hybrid technique that combines bottom‐up electrochemical growth with top‐down plasma treatment to produce mesoporous semiconductors with large crystalline domain sizes and excellent surface passivation. By passivating unsaturated bonds without incorporating any chemical or physical layers, these films show better stability and enhancement in the optoelectronic properties of mesoporous copper telluride (CuTe) with different pore diameters. These results provide exciting opportunities for the development of long‐term, stable, and high‐performance mesoporous semiconductor materials for future technologies.
