Abstract
Glioma is a serious life-threatening disease, the pathogenesis of which remains to be investigated. The objective of the present investigation was to explore the expression and clinical significance of tumor suppressor gene (P53), O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in glioma. Immunohistochemical staining was applied to study the clinical characteristics of 40 samples from glioma patients, detect the expression of and analyse the relationship between P53, MGMT and EGFR and glioma. The results demonstrated that the positive expression rate of P53 was 47.5% in 40 cases of glioma samples, of which the expression of P53 in the high grade glioma was higher than that of the low grade samples (P < 0.05); the positive expression rate of MGMT was 37.5%, but there was no significant significance of MGMT expression between the high grade glioma and the low grade glioma (P >0.05); the positive expression rate of EGFR was 55%, of which the expression of EGFR of the high grade glioma was higher than that of the low grade glioma (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the expressions of P53, MGMT and EGFR in the glioma patients of different ages, gender and with different tumor sizes. The expressions of P53 and MGMT were negatively correlated (P<0.05). The expressions of P53 and EGFR were positively correlated (P<0.05). In conclusion, P53, EGFR and MGMT could play a role in the occurrence, development and deterioration of glioma.

Abstract
Biomedical imaging is an essential tool for diagnosis and therapy of diseases such as cancers. It is likely true that medicine has developed with biomedical imaging methods. Sensitivity and resolution of biomedical imaging methods can be improved with imaging agents. Furthermore, it will be ideal if imaging agents could be also used as therapeutic agents. Therefore, one dose can be used for both diagnosis and therapy of diseases (i.e., theragnosis). This will simplify medical treatment of diseases, and will be also a benefit to patients. Mixed (Ln(1x)Ln(2y)O3, x + y = 2) or unmixed (Ln2O3) lanthanide (Ln) oxide nanoparticles (Ln = Eu, Gd, Dy, Tb, Ho, Er) are potential multi-modal imaging and cancer therapeutic agents. The lanthanides have a variety of magnetic and optical properties, useful for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescent imaging (FI), respectively. They also highly attenuate X-ray beam, useful for X-ray computed tomography (CT). In addition gadolinium-157 ((157)Gd) has the highest thermal neutron capture cross section among stable radionuclides, useful for gadolinium neutron capture therapy (GdNCT). Therefore, mixed or unmixed lanthanide oxide nanoparticles can be used for multi-modal imaging methods (i.e., MRI-FI, MRI-CT, CT-FI, and MRICT- FI) and cancer therapy (i.e., GdNCT). Since mixed or unmixed lanthanide oxide nanoparticles are single-phase and solid-state, they can be easily synthesized, and are compact and robust, which will be beneficial to biomedical applications. In this review physical properties of the lanthanides, synthesis, characterizations, multi-modal imagings, and cancer therapy of mixed and unmixed lanthanide oxide nanoparticles are discussed.

Abstract
We report a new measurement of electron antineutrino disappearance using the fully constructed Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. The final two of eight antineutrino detectors were installed in the summer of 2012. Including the 404 days of data collected from October 2012 to November 2013 resulted in a total exposure of 6.9×10^{5} GW_{th} ton days, a 3.6 times increase over our previous results. Improvements in energy calibration limited variations between detectors to 0.2%. Removal of six ^{241}Am-^{13}C radioactive calibration sources reduced the background by a factor of 2 for the detectors in the experimental hall furthest from the reactors. Direct prediction of the antineutrino signal in the far detectors based on the measurements in the near detectors explicitly minimized the dependence of the measurement on models of reactor antineutrino emission. The uncertainties in our estimates of sin^{2}2θ_{13} and |Δm_{ee}^{2}| were halved as a result of these improvements. An analysis of the relative antineutrino rates and energy spectra between detectors gave sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0.084±0.005 and |Δm_{ee}^{2}|=(2.42±0.11)×10^{-3} eV^{2} in the three-neutrino framework.

Abstract
4-Coumarate: coenzyme A ligase (4CL) catalyzes the conversion of hydroxycinnamates into corresponding CoA esters for biosynthesis of flavonoids and lignin. It has been widely studied in seed plants; however, it is poorly characterized in ferns. In this study, we identified 4CLs genes in ferns D. fragrans (L.) Schott (Df4CL gene) by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE), and then investigated the expressions of the genes by real-time PCR, and determined total flavonoids and lignin contents. The results showed that four members of the 4CL genes were found from this species, which named Df4CL 1, 2, 3, and 4 genes. Their full-length cDNA was sequenced. Also, our analyses showed that the amino acid sequences derived from these cDNAs exhibited similar conserved regions (Box I and Box II), and substrate-binding regions compared to 4CLs isolated from seed plants.At the same time, the developmental and stress-induced gene expression patterns showed that the changes on the expression levels of Df4CL genes affected the levels of flavonoids and lignin. In conclusion, we identified 4CLs genes in ferns D. fragrans and analyzed the expressions of these genes, and finally explored the relationship between the expressions of 4CLs and syntheses of flavonoids and lignin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence indicates that inflammation has a crucial role in the development and progression of cancer. We developed a novel systemic inflammation score (SIS) based on preoperative serum albumin and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and examined its prognostic value for patients with clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) after surgery. METHODS The study comprised 441 ccRCC patients undergoing nephrectomy between 2008 and 2009 in a single centre. The SIS was developed and its associations with clinicopathological features and overall survival (OS) were evaluated. RESULTS The SIS consisted of serum albumin and LMR that were both retained as independent indicators adjusting for other haematological and laboratory markers of systemic inflammation responses and traditional clinicopathological features. A high SIS was significantly associated with aggressive tumour behaviours and served as an independent prognostic factor of reduced OS. Furthermore, the SIS could significantly stratify patient prognosis in different tumour stages and Mayo Clinic stage, size, grade and necrosis scores. Incorporation of the SIS into a prognostic model including TNM stage, Fuhrman grade and lymphovascular invasion generated a nomogram, which predicted accurately 3- and 5-year survival for ccRCC patients. CONCLUSIONS The SIS as a potentially powerful prognostic biomarker might improve traditional clinicopathological analysis to refine clinical outcome prediction for ccRCC patients after surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND At the end of maturation, megakaryocytes (MKs) form long cytoplasmic extensions called proplatelets (PPT). Enormous changes in cytoskeletal structures cause PPT to extend further, to re-localize organelles such as mitochondria and to fragment, leading to platelet release. Two non-muscle myosin IIs (NMIIs) are expressed in MKs; however, only NMII-A (MYH9), but not NMII-B (MYH10), is expressed in mature MKs and is implicated in PPT formation. OBJECTIVES To provide in vivo evidence on the specific role of NMII-A and IIB in MK PPT formation. METHODS We studied two transgenic mouse models in which non-muscle myosin heavy chain (NMHC) II-A was genetically replaced either by II-B or by a chimeric NMHCII that combined the head domain of II-A with the rod and tail domains of II-B. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS This work demonstrates that the kinetic properties of NM-IIA, depending on the N-terminal domain, render NMII-A the better NMII candidate to control PPT formation. Furthermore, the carboxyl-terminal domain determines myosin II localization in the constriction region of PPT and is responsible for the specific role of NMII in platelet release.

Abstract
Supramolecular self-assembly driven by catechol-metal ion coordination has gained great success in the fabrication of functional materials including adhesives, capsules, coatings and hydrogels. However, this route has encountered a great challenge in the construction of nanoarchitectures in the absence of removable templates, because of the uncontrollable crosslinking of catechol-metal ion coordination. Herein, we show that a supramolecular approach, combining both catechol-metal ion coordination and polymer self-assembly together, can organize polymers into hybrid nanoassemblies ranging from solid particles, homogeneous vesicles to Janus vesicles. Without the introduction of a specific binding ligand or complicated molecular design, these assemblies can totally disassemble in response to proteins. UV/vis absorption, fluorescence quenching and recovery investigations have confirmed that proteins can seize metal ions from the hybrid nanoassemblies, thus causing the degradation of catechol-metal ion coordination networks.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that is characterized by increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, independent of the traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Although classically known for its role in the regulation of circulatory homeostasis, angiotensin II (Ang II) is recognized to act as a powerful proinflammatory mediator. Some research has showed that Ang II plays important roles in autoimmune diseases, including RA, systemic lupus erythematosus and multiple sclerosis. Ang II blockers prove effective in reducing inflammation and autoimmunity in rheumatic diseases and their relative safety, together with their effects for reducing the cardiovascular disease risk, suggest that Ang II blockers may at least act as effective adjunctive therapy for disease control in patients with RA. The present review focuses systematically on the potential impact of Ang II and its receptors on inflammation and immunomodulation in patients with RA.

Abstract
SUMMARY The study was to investigate the outcomes of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with hip fractures with a large-scale, population-based, nationwide, case-cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance database. The group has hip fractures at a younger age, higher complication, and mortality rate, which indicate that early intervention is necessary. INTRODUCTION This study seeks to evaluate the incidence, mortality, and complication rates in RA patients with hip fractures, using a nationwide database. METHODS Data were collected from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. The study group included 117,129 patients with hip fractures diagnosed from January 2004 to December 2010. Matching based on the propensity of RA patients was used. In total, 1,088 hip fractures were reported among patients with RA. Patients with hip fractures were divided into two groups: those without RA (controls) and those with RA (RA group). The incidence of hip fracture and mortality and complication rates after the hip fracture were then compared between the two groups. RESULTS RA patients had a significantly higher incidence of hip fracture (3,260/100,000 person-years) compared with the general population (72/100,000 person-years). Hip fractures occurred significantly earlier among RA patients (70.6±5.3 years) compared with the control group (76.1±6.2 years). Cumulative mortality rates at 6-month and 1-year follow-up were significantly higher among patients in the RA group (9.47 and 18.47%) compared to the controls (8.47 and 13.62%) and among RA patients without hip fractures (3.24 and 6.16%). There was a significantly higher incidence of osteomyelitis after hip fracture among the RA group than among the body mass index-, comorbidity-, age-, and sex-matched patients in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Compared to patients without RA, those with RA have a higher incidence of hip fractures at a relatively younger age and with higher complication and mortality rates. Steroid and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, the most common medicine in Taiwanese RA patients, might contribute to the high incidence of fracture and post-op infection. Appropriate early intervention to prevent hip fractures in RA patients is a critical issue in rheumatology care.

Abstract
SUMMARY A growing elderly population is expected worldwide, and the burden of hip fractures on health care system will continue to increase. By 2035, there will be a 2.7-fold increase in the number of hip fractures in Taiwan. The study provides quantitative basis for the future distribution of medical resources. INTRODUCTION Hip fractures have long been recognized as a major public health concern. The study aimed to determine time trends in the incidence of hip fractures and to forecast the number of hip fractures expected in Taiwan up to 2035. METHODS A nationwide survey was conducted using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from 2004 to 2011. A total of 141,397 hip fractures were identified, with a mean of 17,675 fractures/year. Annual incidences of hip fractures were calculated and tested for trends. Projections of the incidence rates of hip fractures and bed days associated with hip fractures were calculated using Poisson regression on the historical incidence rates in combination with population projections from 2012 to 2035. RESULTS The incidence rates of hip fracture during 2004-2011 were 317 and 211 per 100,000 person-years among women and men, respectively. Over this 8-year period, the age-standardized incidence of hip fracture decreased by 13.4% among women and 12.2% among men. Despite the decline in the age-standardized incidence, the absolute number of hip fractures increased owing to the aging population. The number of hip fractures is expected to increase from 18,338 in 2010 to 50,421 in 2035-a 2.7-fold increase. The number of bed days for 2010 and 2035 was estimated at 161,248 and 501,995, respectively, representing a 3.1-fold increase. CONCLUSIONS The socioeconomic impact of hip fractures will be high in the near future. This study provides a quantitative basis for future policy decisions to serve this need.

Abstract
Chalcone synthase (CHS) is an enzyme that catalyzes the first committed step in flavonoid biosynthesis, and its transcription level is regulated by light conditions. By using homology cloning and rapid amplification of cDNA ends, we cloned a chalcone synthase gene (DfCHS) from Dryopteris fragrans (L.) Schott. The full-length cDNA of DfCHS is 1,737 bp, with an open reading frame (ORF) of 1,122 bp (deposited in GenBank under Accession Number KF530802) encoding a predicted protein of 373 amino acids. The calculated molecular mass of DfCHS is 41.3 kDa. We studied the expression of DfCHS and total flavonoid contents in tissue culture seedlings cultured under the low temperature at 4ºC, high temperature at 35ºC and UV conditions, respectively. The results show that the expression of DfCHS are not the same, but all present rising trends, then flavonoid contents were increased. Overall, our results imply that the expression of DfCHS gene provide a certain theory basis in the status of evolution among ferns.

Abstract
Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is an important fiber crop, and native cultivars exist widely throughout China. In the present study, we analyzed the genetic diversity of 27 important Chinese native hemp cultivars, by using inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) and chromosome markers. We determined the following chromosome formulas: 2n = 20 = 14m + 6sm; 2n = 20 = 20m; 2n = 20 = 18m + 2sm; 2n = 20 = 16m + 4sm; and 2n = 20 = 12m + 8sm. The results of our ISSR analysis revealed the genetic relationships among the 27 cultivars; these relationships were analyzed by using the unweighted pair-group method based on DNA polymorphism. Our results revealed that all of the native cultivars showed considerable genetic diversity. At a genetic distance of 0.324, the 27 varieties could be classified into five categories; this grouping corresponded well with the chromosome formulas. All of the investigated hemp cultivars represent relatively primitive types; moreover, the genetic distances show a geographical distribution, with a small amount of regional hybridity.

Abstract
A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9 GW(th) nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the 10(-3) eV(2)<|Δm(41)(2) |< 0.3 eV(2) range. The relative spectral distortion due to the disappearance of electron antineutrinos was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on sin(2) 2θ(14) cover the 10(-3) eV(2) ≲ |Δm(41)(2)| ≲ 0.1 eV(2) region, which was largely unexplored.

Abstract
Up to now, studies of exercise-induced cardiac arrhythmia have focused primarily on the working myocardium, with few studies examining to the cardiac conduction system where the rhythmic and synchronized contraction of the heart is initiated. To explore whether the cardiac conduction system is involved in the exercise-induced cardiac injury, we performed histological analysis of sinoatrial node, atrioventricular node and Purkinje fibers and tested the level of structural protein cardiac troponin T and Connexin 43 in Sprague Dawley rats following repeated exhaustive exercise. We found increased collagen deposition, hyperplasia interstitialis, and enhanced activity of lactate dehydrongenase and acid phosphatase in the cardiac conduction system following repeated exhaustive exercise. Mitochondrial alterations, enlarged area of intercalated disc and disappearance of gap junctions were additionally observed through electron transmission microscopy. In addition, significant decreases in cardiac troponin T and Connexin 43 were present in the cardiac conduction system in response to repeated exhaustive exercise. All of these findings demonstrate that repeated exhaustive exercise induces ischemic alterations, damage to cytoskeleton and gap junctions, and tissue fibrosis in the cardiac conduction system in rats. These data may shed a new light on the mechanism of exercised-induced cardiac injury and arrhythmia.

Abstract
Acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF) has a poor prognosis in patients with hepatitis B virus infection. The role of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), which reflects the inflammatory status of the patient before treatment, has never been studied in this setting. To investigate the predictive value of NLR in patients with ACHBLF, a retrospective cohort with 216 patients and a prospective validation cohort with 73 patients were recruited. Multivariate analyses showed that total bilirubin (TBIL), NLR, age and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score had prognostic significance for survival. Both NLR (0.781) and MELD score (0.744) had higher ROC curves, which differed significantly from those for age (0.615) and TBIL (0.691), but not from each other (P = 0.94). NLR ≤ 2.36 predicted lower mortality (with 91.6% sensitivity and 86.0% negative predictive value), and NLR >6.12 was a warning sign for higher mortality risk (with 90.1% specificity and 80.3% positive predictive value). These results demonstrated that pretreatment NLR was associated with the prognosis of patients with ACHBLF, and elevated NLR predicted poor outcome within 8 weeks. We suggest that NLR cut-offs of ≤ 2.36 and >6.12 are powerful markers for predicting mortality in ACHBLF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatic ischemic-reperfusion injury (HIRI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality following liver surgery. Octreotide (Oct) has been reported to improve hepatocellular energy metabolism in a rat HIRI model. This study was designed to evaluate whether Oct could protect the liver of rabbits against ischemic-reperfusion (I/R) injury. METHODS Twenty-four adult New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into a sham operated group (Control), an ischemia/reperfusion group (I/R), and an ischemia/reperfusion + Oct pretreatment group (I/R + Oct). The hemodynamic (mean arterial pressure [MAP] and heart rate [HR]) changes, liver enzymes (alanine aminotransferase [ALT], aspartate aminotransferase [AST], and lactate dehydrogenase [LDH]) release, inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]α and interleukin [IL]-1β) levels, and endotoxin (ETX) levels were measured during I/R. RESULTS Compared with the Control group, the MAP decreased and HR increased in I/R and I/R + Oct groups at ischemia 15 minutes (P < .05) but were less in the I/R + Oct group relative to the I/R group (P < .05). ALT, AST, LDH, IL-1β, and ETX levels were increased in the I/R and I/R + Oct groups at ischemia 30 minutes (P < .05), however, the increase was lower in the I/R + Oct group relative to the I/R group (P < .05). Bcl-2 expression in the I/R + Oct group was higher compared with other groups (P < .05) and Bax expression in the I/R group was reduced compared with other groups (P < .05). Hepatocellular damage in the I/R + Oct group appeared to be less than in the I/R group by microscopy. CONCLUSIONS Oct pretreatment attenuated hemodynamic changes and decreased liver enzyme changes induced by HIRI in a rabbit model. The protection mechanisms of Oct may be related to reduced ETX levels, down-regulation of the inflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-1β, and inhibition of hepatocellular apoptosis, as well as the modulation of the mitochondrion-mediated Bcl-2/Bax apoptosis pathway. Based on our study it appears that Oct may be useful in decreasing liver injury after liver surgery and/or transplantation and may serve as a promising agent against HIRI.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the effect of anionic polysaccharides often used in beverage applications (xanthan and λ-carrageenan) on the antimicrobial efficacy of the cationic surfactant lauric arginate (LAE) against typical spoilage yeasts. METHODS AND RESULTS The antimicrobial efficacy of LAE against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans and Zygosaccharomyces bailii in the absence and presence of anionic polysaccharides was assessed by microtitre and macrobroth dilution assays. Combining LAE with either xanthan or λ-carrageenan caused a pronounced decrease in LAE's antimicrobial efficacy, with the minimal inhibitory and lethal concentrations (MIC and MLC) both increasing with increasing polysaccharide concentration. This reduction in antimicrobial efficacy was more pronounced for the addition of λ-carrageenan. To determine the cause of loss of activity, physical properties of solutions were examined. Turbidity and sedimentation measurements indicated that complexes between LAE and anionic polysaccharides had been formed. Electrophoresis measurements showed that complexes had varying electrical charges and dimensions depending on solution composition. CONCLUSION Results suggest that electrostatic interactions between LAE and anionic polysaccharides play a major role in complex formation and loss of antimicrobial activity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Results have important implications for the utilization of LAE as an antimicrobial agent in beverage and food products containing anionic polysaccharides.

Abstract
A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos (ν¯(e)) from six 2.9 GW(th) reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41 589 (203 809 and 92 912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin(2)2θ(13)=0.090(-0.009)(+0.008) and the first direct measurement of the ν¯(e) mass-squared difference |Δm(ee)2|=(2.59(-0.20)(+0.19))×10(-3) eV2 is obtained using the observed ν¯(e) rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of |Δm(ee)2| is consistent with |Δm(μμ)2| measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

Abstract
Objectives The objective of this study is to determine an optimal antibiotic-loaded
bone cement (ALBC) for infection prophylaxis in total joint arthroplasty
(TJA). Methods We evaluated the antibacterial effects of polymethylmethacrylate
(PMMA) bone cements loaded with vancomycin, teicoplanin, ceftazidime,
imipenem, piperacillin, gentamicin, and tobramycin against methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus
aureus (MSSA), methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus (MRSA),
coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), Escherichia
coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella
pneumoniae. Standardised cement specimens made from 40 g
PMMA loaded with 1 g antibiotics were tested for elution characteristics,
antibacterial activities, and compressive strength in vitro. Results The ALBC containing gentamicin provided a much longer duration
of antibiotic release than those containing other antibiotic. Imipenem-loading
on the cement had a significant adverse effect on the compressive
strength of the ALBC, which made it insufficient for use in prosthesis
fixation. All of the tested antibiotics maintained their antibacterial
properties after being mixed with PMMA. The gentamicin-loaded ALBC
provided a broad antibacterial spectrum against all the test organisms
and had the greatest duration of antibacterial activity against
MSSA, CoNS, P. aeruginosa and E. coli. Conclusion When considering the use of ALBC as infection prophylaxis in

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Polyethylene glycol (PEG) bowel preparations are regarded as effective and safe for colonoscopy; however, recent reports have indicated a risk of acute renal failure (ARF). This population-based case-crossover study evaluated the association between PEG and ARF in screening colonoscopy patients aged ≥ 50 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) claims data from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2009 were used in the study. The study population consisted of patients aged ≥ 50 years who were first hospitalized for ARF following colonoscopy involving PEG bowel preparation. For each patient, PEG use in a 1-, 2-, or 4-week period prior to the first hospital admission date for ARF (hazard period) was compared with PEG use in four earlier 1-, 2-, or 4-week control periods. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for concomitant medications that could induce ARF. RESULTS The total number of study patients was 1064 (59 % were male). A greater proportion of patients used PEG during the hazard period than during the control periods (for 4-week time window: 8.8 % vs. 3.2 %). The adjusted ORs for ARF incidence when applying the 1-, 2-, and 4-week periods were 3.1 (95 %CI 2.06 - 4.73), 2.5 (95 %CI 1.76 - 3.53), and 2.1 (95 %CI 1.61 - 4.85), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The use of PEG was associated with the risk of ARF. Adequate hydration and renal function monitoring should be assured before and after colonoscopy, regardless of the bowel preparation regimen used.

Abstract
To date, epidemiological studies have assessed the association between Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) gene polymorphisms and cancer risk. However, the results of these studies remain controversial. We aimed to examine the associations between three SNPs (Delta22, rs3804099 and rs3804100) of TLR2 gene and cancer risk by conducting a meta-analysis of case-control studies. A total of eight studies eligible for TLR2 Delta22 polymorphism (2,061 cancer cases and 3,490 controls), six studies for rs3804099 polymorphism (1,681 cases and 1,996 controls), and five studies for rs3804100 polymorphism (3,131 cases and 2,969 controls) were included in this meta-analysis. Our results suggested that Delta22 represented a risk factor on cancers (del-allele versus ins-allele, OR=1.35, 95% CI: 1.05-1.72; del/del versus ins/ins, OR=1.91, 95% CI: 1.03-3.56; del/del + del/ins versus ins/ins, OR=1.33, 95% CI: 1.02-1.73; del/del versus del/ins + ins/ins, OR=1.79, 95% CI: 1.02-3.13), especially in Caucasian population and among population-based studies. For TLR2 rs3804099 polymorphism, we found a decreased cancer risk associated with CC/CT genotype only in Asians compared with TT genotype. TLR2 rs3804100 polymorphism was significantly associated with an elevated cancer risk in overall analysis (CC versus CT, OR=1.70, 95% CI: 1.20-2.42; CC versus CT/TT, OR=1.61, 95% CI: 1.15-2.25). In a stratified analysis, a statistically significant correlation was also observed in non-Caucasian population and population-based studies. In conclusion, the Delta22 and rs3804100 polymorphisms in TLR2 are risk factors for cancer susceptibility while the TLR2 rs3804099 dominant genotype is a protective factor, especially in Asians. Further large and well-designed studies are needed to confirm these conclusions.

In this study, corrugated variations in part thickness designed to match the various mold temperature differences between the mold core and mold cavity sides, along with their effects on part warpage, were investigated. Part thickness was varied in a pitched manner and thickness reductions of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% of the original part thickness were implemented. The results show that when there is a mold temperature difference between core and cavity, using a corrugated thickness reduction design can greatly reduce or even eliminate part warpage. For a uniform thickness part molded under unbalanced cooling, the thermal neutral axis (where the maximum melt temperature is located) will deviate from the gap center toward the mold wall side with the higher temperature. Variation in thickness will pull the deviated thermal neutral axis back to the center line leading to a reduction in part warpage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurosurgeons regularly plan their surgery using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images, which may show a clear distinction between the area to be resected and the surrounding healthy brain tissue depending on the nature of the pathology. However, this distinction is often unclear with the naked eye during the surgical intervention, and it may be difficult to infer depth and an accurate volumetric interpretation from a series of MRI image slices. OBJECTIVES In this work, MRI data are used to create affordable patient-specific 3-dimensional (3D) scale models of the brain which clearly indicate the location and extent of a tumour relative to brain surface features and important adjacent structures. METHODS This is achieved using custom software and rapid prototyping. In addition, functionally eloquent areas identified using functional MRI are integrated into the 3D models. RESULTS Preliminary in vivo results are presented for 2 patients. The accuracy of the technique was estimated both theoretically and by printing a geometrical phantom, with mean dimensional errors of less than 0.5 mm observed. CONCLUSIONS This may provide a practical and cost-effective tool which can be used for training, and during neurosurgical planning and intervention.

Abstract
SUMMARY The association between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and lumbar and femoral neck osteoporosis was assessed in postmenopausal never-smoking Korean women. The presence of family members who actively smoked was associated with femoral neck osteoporosis. The number of cigarettes consumed by cohabitant smokers was positively associated with lumbar and femoral neck osteoporosis. INTRODUCTION This study aimed to assess the association between SHS and postmenopausal osteoporosis. METHODS Of 2,067 postmenopausal women (age, ≥55 years) participating in the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 925 never-smokers identified through interviews and urinary cotinine level verification were enrolled. Cross-sectional relationships between self-reported SHS exposure and osteoporosis of the lumbar vertebrae and femoral neck (defined using the World Health Organization T-score criteria) were investigated by bone densitometry. RESULTS Participants having actively smoking family members showed increased adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for femoral neck osteoporosis compared with participants not exposed to SHS (aOR, 3.68; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 1.23-10.92). Participants whose cohabitant smokers consumed any number of cigarettes per day showed increased occurrences for lumbar and femoral neck osteoporosis compared with the nonexposed group. Participants whose cohabitant smokers consumed ≥20 cigarettes/day showed increased aORs for lumbar (aOR, 5.40; 95 % CI, 1.04-28.04) and femoral neck (aOR, 4.35; 95 % CI, 1.07-17.68) osteoporosis compared with participants not exposed to SHS. CONCLUSIONS In postmenopausal never-smoking Korean women, exposure to SHS was positively associated with osteoporosis. This finding further emphasizes a need to identify vulnerable groups exposed to SHS to increase bone health.

Abstract
Airborne pollutants, both particulate and gaseous, represent a major environmental factor promoting allergic sensitization and disease expression. These adverse effects of particulate matter are highly dependent upon the nature and size of the particles, their content of chemicals and metals, and the subject's genetic makeup. Diesel exhaust and gases, in particular ozone, have been shown to exacerbate cellular inflammation and to act as mucosal adjuvants to skew the immune response to inhaled antigens toward a Th2-like phenotype. Growing evidence suggests that mechanisms of pollutant-induced amplification of the allergic reaction depend on oxidative stress that is under the control of susceptibility genes, as well as epigenetic mechanisms.

Abstract
Characterization of the dynamic mechanical behavior of brain tissue is essential for understanding and simulating the mechanisms of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Changes in mechanical properties may also reflect changes in the brain due to aging or disease. In this study, we used magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) to measure the viscoelastic properties of ferret brain tissue in vivo. Three-dimensional (3D) displacement fields were acquired during wave propagation in the brain induced by harmonic excitation of the skull at 400 Hz, 600 Hz and 800 Hz. Shear waves with wavelengths in the order of millimeters were clearly visible in the displacement field, in strain fields, and in the curl of displacement field (which contains no contributions from longitudinal waves). Viscoelastic parameters (storage and loss moduli) governing dynamic shear deformation were estimated in gray and white matter for these excitation frequencies. To characterize the reproducibility of measurements, two ferrets were studied on three different dates each. Estimated viscoelastic properties of white matter in the ferret brain were generally similar to those of gray matter and consistent between animals and scan dates. In both tissue types G' increased from approximately 3 kPa at 400 Hz to 7 kPa at 800 Hz and G″ increased from approximately 1 kPa at 400 Hz to 2 kPa at 800 Hz. These measurements of shear wave propagation in the ferret brain can be used to both parameterize and validate finite element models of brain biomechanics.
