Abstract
We performed macroscopic observations of the sphenomandibular ligaments, and measured the space that is surrounded by the mandibular ramus and the ligament by using computed tomography. The materials used in this study were 40 heads of 40 adult cadavers. The cadaver head was cut on the mid sagittal plane. The medial pterygoid muscles of the cadavers were removed to observe the ligaments. The attaching style of the sphenomandibular ligament to the mandibular ramus was classified into three types: Type I (5 in 40 samples; attached only to the mandibular lingula), Type II (12 in 40 samples; attached to the mandibular lingula and extended toward the rear part of the internal surface of the mandibular ramus), and Type III (23 in 40 samples; attached to the mandibular lingula and toward the posterior border of the mandibular ramus). There was no statistical difference in the length of the ligament among the three types. However, Type III showed the largest width, and the space was approximately eight and three times as large as those of Type I and II, respectively. This indicated that the Type III ligament covered a larger area over the mandibular foramen than Type I. These results suggest that the three-dimensional morphology of the sphenomandibular ligament, as represented by Type III, may affect the effectiveness of anesthesia.

Abstract
Abstract We present the cases of two patients (19- and 40-year-old women) with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who showed marked elevation of C-reactive protein (CRP). In both patients, pleural and/or peritoneal effusions were caused by lupus serositis. Methylprednisolone pulse therapy was effective in improving the serositis and normalizing CRP. Although it is generally considered that the CRP response is relatively weak in lupus patients, these cases suggest that a strong CRP response can occur in a subset of SLE.

Abstract
Opioids, such as morphine and fentanyl, are widely used as effective analgesics for the treatment of acute and chronic pain. In addition, the opioid system has a key role in the rewarding effects of morphine, ethanol, cocaine and various other drugs. Although opioid sensitivity is well known to vary widely among individual subjects, several candidate genetic polymorphisms reported so far are not sufficient for fully understanding the wide range of interindividual differences in human opioid sensitivity. By conducting a multistage genome-wide association study (GWAS) in healthy subjects, we found that genetic polymorphisms within a linkage disequilibrium block that spans 2q33.3-2q34 were strongly associated with the requirements for postoperative opioid analgesics after painful cosmetic surgery. The C allele of the best candidate single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs2952768, was associated with more analgesic requirements, and consistent results were obtained in patients who underwent abdominal surgery. In addition, carriers of the C allele in this SNP exhibited less vulnerability to severe drug dependence in patients with methamphetamine dependence, alcohol dependence, and eating disorders and a lower 'Reward Dependence' score on a personality questionnaire in healthy subjects. Furthermore, the C/C genotype of this SNP was significantly associated with the elevated expression of a neighboring gene, CREB1. These results show that SNPs in this locus are the most potent genetic factors associated with human opioid sensitivity known to date, affecting both the efficacy of opioid analgesics and liability to severe substance dependence. Our findings provide valuable information for the personalized treatment of pain and drug dependence.

Abstract
Although most cyanobacterial cells contain prominent polyphosphate bodies in the central cytoplasmic area enclosed by the peripheral thylakoid membranes, their roles are not fully understood. Storing phosphate for nucleotide production might be one of their important roles in survival of the cells. As a step towards identifying a possible contribution of the polyphosphate bodies to DNA synthesis, the relationship between polyphosphate bodies and DNA throughout cell division cycle of Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 cells cultured under light/dark cycles was investigated with light and electron microscopy. During the dark period, the average size of polyphosphate bodies increased gradually without significant change in their number and distribution. However, during the light period, the number of polyphosphate bodies increased, while the size of each polyphosphate body decreased and cells elongated until the end of the light period, when most cells divided. The ratio of the content of polyphosphate bodies to cell length increased gradually during the dark period and decreased during the light period. Hoechst 33342-stained DNA appeared diffuse during the dark period, but in the light period it became condensed and eventually formed a wavy, rope-like structure prior to cell division. Close association between fibres containing DNA and polyphosphate bodies was demonstrated by TEM using DNA-specific staining and BrdU labelling. These regular coordinated changes of polyphosphate bodies and DNA shape during the cell division cycle, together with their intimate interaction, imply a role of polyphosphate bodies in supplying material for DNA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The aim of the current study was to assess the detection rate of the right adrenal gland and the diagnostic ability of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) for the diagnosis of adrenal metastasis in potentially resectable lung cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS This retrospective cohort study included a consecutive series of 150 patients undergoing EUS/EUS - FNA for staging of lung cancer. The detection rate of the right adrenal gland by EUS and the diagnostic accuracies of computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography-CT (PET-CT), and EUS/EUS - FNA for the diagnosis of adrenal metastasis were evaluated. RESULTS The right adrenal gland was visualized by EUS in 131 patients (87.3 %); the left adrenal gland was visualized in all patients. Findings suggestive of metastasis in either one of the adrenal glands or in both were observed in 6 patients (4.0 %) by CT, in 5 patients (3.3 %) by PET-CT, and in 11 patients (7.3 %) by EUS. EUS - FNA was performed simultaneously in the 11 patients, and in 4 patients the diagnosis of metastasis was established. The accuracy for the diagnosis of adrenal metastasis was 100 % for EUS/EUS - FNA, 96.0 % for CT, and 97.0 % for PET-CT (P = 0.1146). CONCLUSIONS As well as the left adrenal gland, the right adrenal gland was also usually visible by EUS. EUS/EUS - FNA provided an accurate diagnosis of adrenal metastasis, although the prevalence of adrenal metastasis was relatively low in these patients with potentially resectable lung cancer.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based sexing and effective semen collection methods for black-headed and straw-necked ibis species. However, most birds are not sexually dimorphic, that is, the sexes appear similar. Therefore, the gender should be determined before semen collection. DNA was extracted from the blood samples of 11 black-headed and 4 straw-necked ibis. The sex was determined after PCR amplification of the EE0.6 region of W-chromosome. The PCR products were separated using gel electrophoresis. A single band indicated the presence of the EE0.6 region and that the individual was a female, while no band indicated that the individual was a male. Further, the single bands from seven specimens were amplified. Semen collection was performed by massage or a combination of massage with electro-ejaculation and was attempted during all four seasons. The semen was successfully collected in March from male straw-necked ibis using the massage method. Limited motility, viability and concentration of straw-necked ibis sperm were observed. The sperm length was 180 μm and that of the nucleus was 30 μm with acrosome located at the tip of the nucleus. Thus, the PCR-based sexing proved to be an accurate molecular sexing method for black-headed and straw-necked ibis. Furthermore, we successfully collected semen and observed the stained sperm nucleus and acrosome of the straw-necked ibis sperm. We propose that the use of this PCR methodology can be applied as a routine method for sex determination and semen collection in ibis species for future ecological research. However, considering our limited success, further studies on semen collection method are required.

Abstract
A comparison of periodic approximants and their quasicrystalline counterparts offers the opportunity to better understand the structure, physical properties and stabilizing mechanisms of these complex phases. We present a combined experimental and molecular dynamics study of the lattice dynamics of the icosahedral quasicrystals i-ZnMgSc and i-ZnAgSc and compare it to recently published results obtained for the cubic 1/1-approximant Zn(6)Sc. Both phases, quasicrystal and approximant, are built up from large atomic clusters which contain a tetrahedral shell at the cluster centre and are packed either quasiperiodically or on a bcc lattice. Using quasielastic neutron scattering and atomic scale simulations, we show that in the quasicrystal the tetrahedra display a dynamics similar to that observed in the 1/1-approximant: the tetrahedra behave as a 'single molecule' and reorient dynamically on a timescale of the order of a few ps. The tetrahedra reorientation is accompanied by a large distortion of the surrounding cluster shells which provide a unique dynamical flexibility to the quasicrystal. However, whereas in the 1/1-approximant the tetrahedron reorientation is observed down to T(c) = 160 K, where a phase transition takes place, in the quasicrystal the tetrahedron dynamics is gradually freezing from 550 to 300 K, similarly to a glassy system.

Abstract
We investigate the two-dimensional highly spin-polarized electron accumulation layers commonly appearing near the surface of n-type polar semiconductors BiTeX (X=I, Br, and Cl) by angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Because of the polarity and the strong spin-orbit interaction built in the bulk atomic configurations, the quantized conduction-band subbands show giant Rashba-type spin splitting. The characteristic 2D confinement effect is clearly observed also in the valence bands down to the binding energy of 4 eV. The X-dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling is directly estimated from the observed spin-split subbands, which roughly scales with the inverse of the band-gap size in BiTeX.

Abstract
A hybridization barrier leads to the inability of seed formation after intergeneric crossings between Brassica rapa and Raphanus sativus. Most B. rapa lines cannot set intergeneric hybrid seeds because of embryo breakdown, but a B. rapa line obtained from turnip cultivar 'Shogoin-kabu' is able to produce a large number of hybrid seeds as a maternal parent by crossings with R. sativus. In 'Shogoin-kabu' crossed with R. sativus, developments of embryos and endosperms were slower than those in intraspecific crossings, but some of them grew to mature seeds without embryo breakdown. Intergeneric hybrid seeds were obtained in a 'Shogoin-kabu' line at a rate of 0.13 per pollinated flower, while no hybrid seeds were obtained in a line developed from Chinese cabbage cultivar 'Chiifu'. F(1) hybrid plants between the lines of 'Shogoin-kabu' and 'Chiifu' set a larger number of hybrid seeds per flower, 0.68, than both the parental lines. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for hybrid seed formation were analyzed after intergeneric crossings using two different F(2) populations derived from the F(1) hybrids, and three QTLs with significant logarithm of odds scores were detected. Among them, two QTLs, i.e., one in linkage group A10 and the other in linkage group A01, were detected in both the F(2) populations. These two QTLs had contrary effects on the number of hybrid seeds. Epistatic interaction between these two QTLs was revealed. Possible candidate genes controlling hybrid seed formation ability in QTL regions were inferred using the published B. rapa genome sequences.

Abstract
Appropriate treatment strategy for congenital heart disease may be influenced by coexisting congenital anomalies of respiratory or digestive system. Typical congenital anomalies that coexist frequently with congenital heart diseases and have influence on treatment strategy of congenital heart disease include trecheoesophageal fistula, diaphragmatic hernia, and tracheal stenosis. In neonates with congenital heart disease and tracheoesophageal fistula (the fistula) should be immediately repaired after birth, followed by cardiac surgery to ameliorate heart failure or hypoxemia if feasible. In neonates with congenital heart disease and diaphragmatic hernia, diaphragmatic hernia repair is performed first unless heart disease is life threatening. In patients with congenital heart disease and tracheal stenosis, concomitant repair of heart disease and tracheal stenosis is a reasonable strategy in most patients. The treatment of patients with congenital heart disease and coexisting congenital anomalies of respiratory or digestive system remains challenging. We believe that properly organized management by multidiciplinary approach is essential for best achievable outcome.

Abstract
Antibodies against double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) are widely used to diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and evaluate its activity in patients. This study was undertaken to examine the clinical utility of circulating anti-dsDNA antibody-secreting cells for evaluating SLE patients. Anti-dsDNA antibody-secreting cells quantified using an enzyme-linked immunospot assay were detected in the spleen, bone marrow and peripheral blood from MRL/ lpr but not in control BALB/c mice. Circulating anti-dsDNA antibody-secreting cells were detected in 29 (22%) of 130 patients with SLE, but in none of 49 with non-SLE connective-tissue disease or 18 healthy controls. The presence of circulating anti-dsDNA antibody-secreting cells was associated with persistent proteinuria, high SLE disease activity index and systemic lupus activity measures, and a high serum anti-dsDNA antibody titre measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The positive predictive value for active disease was 48% for circulating anti-dsDNA antibody-secreting cells versus 17% for serum anti-dsDNA antibodies. A prospective cohort of patients with circulating anti-dsDNA antibodies and inactive SLE showed that the cumulative disease flare-free rate was significantly lower in patients with than without circulating anti-dsDNA antibody-secreting cells ( p < 0.001). Circulating anti-dsDNA antibody-secreting cells are a useful biomarker for assessing disease activity in SLE patients.
