Computational analysis of thrombosis risk with variations in left ventricular assist device inflow cannula design in a multi-patient model

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are mechanical pumps used to support patients with end-stage heart failure. The inflow cannula is a critical component of the LVAD as it connects the pump to the left ventricle, allowing blood to be drawn from the heart. However, the design of the cannula can significantly impact LV hemodynamics and cause complications, including thrombosis. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the numerical effects of left ventricle (LV) size on cannula design in order to enhance hemodynamic performance using post-operative left ventricular assist device (LVAD) models.

METHODS

A parametric design evaluation of two different inflow cannulas were carried out on left ventricles (LV) of varying sizes (ranging from 154 to 430 ml) constructed from computerized tomography (CT) data from VAD patients using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The study analyzed three key factors contributing to thrombosis formation: blood residence time, blood stagnation ratio, and wall shear stress.

RESULTS

Results showed higher blood residence time and stagnation ratio for larger left ventricular sizes. In addition, increasing the insertion length of the cannula reduced the average wall shear stress.

CONCLUSION

Overall, the study's findings suggest that the optimal cannula shape for LVADs varies with left ventricular size.

Segmentation of the aorta in systolic phase from 4D flow MRI: multi-atlas vs. deep learning

OBJECTIVE

In the management of the aortic aneurysm, 4D flow magnetic resonance Imaging provides valuable information for the computation of new biomarkers using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). However, accurate segmentation of the aorta is required. Thus, our objective is to evaluate the performance of two automatic segmentation methods on the calculation of aortic wall pressure.

METHODS

Automatic segmentation of the aorta was performed with methods based on deep learning and multi-atlas using the systolic phase in the 4D flow MRI magnitude image of 36 patients. Using mesh morphing, isotopological meshes were generated, and CFD was performed to calculate the aortic wall pressure. Node-to-node comparisons of the pressure results were made to identify the most robust automatic method respect to the pressures obtained with a manually segmented model.

RESULTS

Deep learning approach presented the best segmentation performance with a mean Dice similarity coefficient and a mean Hausdorff distance (HD) equal to 0.92+/- 0.02 and 21.02+/- 24.20 mm, respectively. At the global level HD is affected by the performance in the abdominal aorta. Locally, this distance decreases to 9.41+/- 3.45 and 5.82+/- 6.23 for the ascending and descending thoracic aorta, respectively. Moreover, with respect to the pressures from the manual segmentations, the differences in the pressures computed from deep learning were lower than those computed from multi-atlas method.

CONCLUSION

To reduce biases in the calculation of aortic wall pressure, accurate segmentation is needed, particularly in regions with high blood flow velocities. Thus, the deep learning segmen-tation method should be preferred.

Reconstruction and Validation of Arterial Geometries for Computational Fluid Dynamics Using Multiple Temporal Frames of 4D Flow-MRI Magnitude Images

PURPOSE

Segmentation and reconstruction of arterial blood vessels is a fundamental step in the translation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to the clinical practice. Four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (4D Flow-MRI) can provide detailed information of blood flow but processing this information to elucidate the underlying anatomical structures is challenging. In this study, we present a novel approach to create high-contrast anatomical images from retrospective 4D Flow-MRI data.

METHODS

For healthy and clinical cases, the 3D instantaneous velocities at multiple cardiac time steps were superimposed directly onto the 4D Flow-MRI magnitude images and combined into a single composite frame. This new Composite Phase-Contrast Magnetic Resonance Angiogram (CPC-MRA) resulted in enhanced and uniform contrast within the lumen. These images were subsequently segmented and reconstructed to generate 3D arterial models for CFD. Using the time-dependent, 3D incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, the transient aortic haemodynamics was computed within a rigid wall model of patient geometries.

RESULTS

Validation of these models against the gold standard CT-based approach showed no statistically significant inter-modality difference regarding vessel radius or curvature (p > 0.05), and a similar Dice Similarity Coefficient and Hausdorff Distance. CFD-derived near-wall hemodynamics indicated a significant inter-modality difference (p > 0.05), though these absolute errors were small. When compared to the in vivo data, CFD-derived velocities were qualitatively similar.

CONCLUSION

This proof-of-concept study demonstrated that functional 4D Flow-MRI information can be utilized to retrospectively generate anatomical information for CFD models in the absence of standard imaging datasets and intravenous contrast.

Impact of the Spatial Velocity Inlet Distribution on the Hemodynamics of the Thoracic Aorta

The impact of the distribution in space of the inlet velocity in the numerical simulations of the hemodynamics in the thoracic aorta is systematically investigated. A real healthy aorta geometry, for which in-vivo measurements are available, is considered. The distribution is modeled through a truncated cone shape, which is a suitable approximation of the real one downstream of a trileaflet aortic valve during the systolic part of the cardiac cycle. The ratio between the upper and the lower base of the truncated cone and the position of the center of the upper base are selected as uncertain parameters. A stochastic approach is chosen, based on the generalized Polynomial Chaos expansion, to obtain accurate response surfaces of the quantities of interest in the parameter space. The selected parameters influence the velocity distribution in the ascending aorta. Consequently, effects on the wall shear stress are observed, confirming the need to use patient-specific inlet conditions if interested in the hemodynamics of this region. The surface base ratio is globally the most important parameter. Conversely, the impact on the velocity and wall shear stress in the aortic arch and descending aorta is almost negligible.

Preventing Acute Limb Ischemia during VA-ECMO-In Silico Analysis of Physical Parameters Associated with Lower Limb Perfusion

BACKGROUND

Peripheral femoro-femoral veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is increasingly used in refractory cardiogenic shock. However, the obstruction of the femoral artery by the return cannula could lead to acute limb ischemia, a frequently encountered situation that is inconstantly prevented by the adjunction of a distal perfusion cannula (DPC). The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of three physical parameters on the perfusion of the cannulated lower limb.

METHODS

Using patient-specific arterial models and computational fluid dynamic simulations, we studied four diameters of arterial cannula, three diameters of DPC, and two percentages of arterial section limitation.

RESULTS

We found that adequate perfusion of the cannulated limb was achieved in only two out of the twenty-one configurations tested, specifically, when the arterial cannula had a diameter of 17 Fr, was considered to limit the section of the artery by 90%, and was associated with an 8 Fr or a 10 Fr DPC. Multivariable analysis revealed that the perfusion of the cannulated lower limb was correlated with the diameter of the DPC, but also with the diameter of the arterial cannula and the percentage of arterial section limitation.

CONCLUSIONS

In most of the cases simulated here, the current system combining unsized arterial cannula and non-specific DPC was not sufficient to provide adequate perfusion of the cannulated lower limb, urging the need for innovative strategies to efficiently prevent acute limb ischemia during peripheral femoro-femoral veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

The SquAd derivation: A Square Additive approach to the turbulent Prandtl number

Liquid metals have been chosen as primary coolant of innovative nuclear systems under current development. They present a very high thermal conductivity and hence a very low molecular Prandtl number. This feature challenges the modeling of turbulent thermal flows applying the Reynolds analogy. This paper addresses this challenge. A new formula for the turbulent Prandtl number is derived in terms of local variables available from two-equations turbulence models. The derivation is a direct consequence of the expected square additivity of the molecular and flow parameters defining the effective viscosity and the effective conductivity. The formula does not degenerate and leads to a Kays like formulation if approximated. While constrained by the quality of the turbulent viscosity modeling, it has the potential to improve the numerical simulation of turbulent thermal flows.

Modeling and Simulation of a Multizone Circulating Reactor for Polyethylene Production with Internal Cooling

Polyolefins play a role in industries and are typically manufactured using two types of reactors: high-pressure tubular reactors and fluidized bed reactors. An innovative technology called the Multizone Circulating reactor (MZCR) has emerged, which introduces an innovative approach with interconnected polymerization zones creating a continuous loop of polymer flow. This study focuses on modeling and simulating ethylene gas phase polymerization within the MZCR in the presence of internal cooling to gain insights into its behavior. To achieve this, a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was developed. It considered momentum, material, and energy balance aspects. The model equations were solved using the finite difference method in COMSOL Multiphysics version 6.1. The investigation primarily focused on studying the impact of incorporating a cooler into the riser section on the temperature profile within the reactor and ethylene conversion. The presence of this cooler resulted in a reduction in temperature change along the riser from approximately 8.0 °C to 4.0 °C. Moreover, it led to an increase of 7%, in ethylene single-pass conversion.

Application of Patient-Specific Computational Fluid Dynamics in Anomalous Aortic Origin of Coronary Artery: A Systematic Review

Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA) is a rare congenital heart condition with fixed and dynamic stenotic elements, potentially causing ischemia. Invasive coronary angiography under stress is the established method for assessing hemodynamics in AAOCA, yet it is costly, technically intricate, and uncomfortable. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations offer a noninvasive alternative for patient-specific hemodynamic analysis in AAOCA. This systematic review examines the role of CFD simulations in AAOCA, encompassing patient-specific modeling, noninvasive imaging-based boundary conditions, and flow characteristics. Screening articles using AAOCA and CFD-related terms prior to February 2023 yielded 19 publications, covering 370 patients. Over the past four years, 12 (63%) publications (259 patients) employed dedicated CFD models, whereas 7 (37%) publications (111 patients) used general-purpose CFD models. Dedicated CFD models were validated for fixed stenosis but lacked dynamic component representation. General-purpose CFD models exhibited variability and limitations, with fluid-solid interaction models showing promise. Interest in CFD modeling of AAOCA has surged recently, mainly utilizing dedicated models. However, these models inadequately replicate hemodynamics, necessitating novel CFD approaches to accurately simulate pathophysiological changes in AAOCA under stress conditions.

Development and validation of a mathematical model for evaluating shear-induced damage of von Willebrand factor

PURPOSE

To develop a mathematical model for predicting shear-induced von Willebrand factor (vWF) function modification which can be used to guide ventricular assist devices (VADs) design, and evaluate the damage of high molecular weight multimers (HMWM)-vWF in VAD patients for reducing clinical complications.

METHODS

Mathematical models were constructed based on three morphological variations (globular vWF, unfolded vWF and degraded vWF) of vWF under shear stress conditions, in which parameters were obtained from previous studies or fitted by experimental data. Different clinical support modes (pediatric vs. adult mode), different VAD operating states (pulsation vs. constant mode) and different clinical VADs (HeartMate II, HeartWare and CentriMag) were utilized to analyze shear-induced damage of HMWM-vWF based on our vWF model. The accuracy and feasibility of the models were evaluated using various experimental and clinical cases, and the biomechanical mechanisms of HMWM-vWF degradation induced by VADs were further explained.

RESULTS

The mathematical model developed in this study predicted VAD-induced HMWM-vWF degradation with high accuracy (correlation with experimental data r2 > 0.99). The numerical results showed that VAD in the pediatric mode resulted in more HMWM-vWF degradation per unit time and per unit flow rate than in the adult mode. However, the total degradation of HMWM-vWF is less in the pediatric mode than in the adult mode because the pediatric mode has fewer times of blood circulation than the adult mode in the same amount of time. The ratio of HMWM-vWF degradation was lower in the pulsation mode than in the constant mode. This is due to the increased flushing of VADs in the pulsation mode, which avoids prolonged stagnation of blood in high shear regions. This study also found that the design feature, rotor size and volume of the VADs, and the superimposed regions of high shear stress and long residence time inside VADs affect the degradation of HMWM-vWF. The axial flow VADs (HeartMate II) showed higher degradation of HMWM-vWF compared to centrifugal VADs (HeartWare and CentriMag). Compared to fully magnetically suspended VADs (CentriMag), hydrodynamic suspended VADs (HeartWare) produced extremely high degradation of HWMW-vWF in its narrow hydrodynamic clearance. Finally, the study used a mathematical model of HMWM-vWF degradation to interpret the clinical statistics from a biomechanical perspective and found that minimizing the rotating speed of VADs within reasonable limits helps to reduce HWMW-vWF degradation. All predicted conclusions are supported by the experimental and clinical data.

CONCLUSION

This study provides a validated mathematical model to assess the shear-induced degradation of HMWM-vWF, which can help to evaluate the damage of HMWM-vWF in patients implanted with VADs for reducing clinical complications, and to guide the optimization of VADs for improving hemocompatibility.

Soft tissues influence nasal airflow in diapsids: Implications for dinosaurs

The nasal passage performs multiple functions in amniotes, including olfaction and thermoregulation. These functions would have been present in extinct animals as well. However, fossils preserve only low-resolution versions of the nasal passage due to loss of soft-tissue structures after death. To test the effects of these lower resolution models on interpretations of nasal physiology, we performed a broadly comparative analysis of the nasal passages in extant diapsid representatives, e.g., alligator, turkey, ostrich, iguana, and a monitor lizard. Using computational fluid dynamics, we simulated airflow through 3D reconstructed models of the different nasal passages and compared these soft-tissue-bounded results to similar analyses of the same airways under the lower-resolution limits imposed by fossilization. Airflow patterns in these bony-bounded airways were more homogeneous and slower flowing than those of their soft-tissue counterparts. These data indicate that bony-bounded airway reconstructions of extinct animal nasal passages are far too conservative and place overly restrictive physiological limitations on extinct species. In spite of the diverse array of nasal passage shapes, distinct similarities in airflow were observed, including consistent areas of nasal passage constriction such as the junction of the olfactory region and main airway. These nasal constrictions can reasonably be inferred to have been present in extinct taxa such as dinosaurs.

CFD simulation of anaerobic granular sludge reactors: A review

Anaerobic digestion processes can generate renewable energy in the form of biogas while treating organic wastewater. The generation of biogas within anaerobic digestion systems is directly linked to the mixing conditions inside the reactors. In high-rate reactors such as the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor and the internal circulation (IC) reactor, the hydrodynamic behaviour will depend on the interactions between the wastewater, the biogas, and the biomass granules. Over the past few years, various researchers have used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the hydrodynamic behaviour in these types of reactors. This review aims to present and critically discuss the state of the art in the use of CFD applied to anaerobic granular sludge reactors (AGSRs). It briefly introduces and discusses the various aspects of modelling. It also reviews the various papers which used CFD to model these reactors and critically analyses the models used for the simulations in terms of general approaches and single-phase vs multiphase studies. The methods used in the validation of the CFD models are also described and discussed. Based on the findings, the challenges and future perspectives for the CFD modelling of AGSRs are discussed and gaps in the knowledge are identified.

Relaxin-Loaded Inhaled Porous Microspheres Inhibit Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Improve Pulmonary Function Post-Bleomycin Challenges

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) causes worsening pulmonary function, and no effective treatment for the disease etiology is available now. Recombinant Human Relaxin-2 (RLX), a peptide agent with anti-remodeling and anti-fibrotic effects, is a promising biotherapeutic candidate for musculoskeletal fibrosis. However, due to its short circulating half-life, optimal efficacy requires continuous infusion or repeated injections. Here, we developed the porous microspheres loading RLX (RLX@PMs) and evaluated their therapeutic potential on IPF by aerosol inhalation. RLX@PMs have a large geometric diameter as RLX reservoirs for a long-term drug release, but smaller aerodynamic diameter due to their porous structures, which were beneficial for higher deposition in the deeper lungs. The results showed a prolonged release over 24 days, and the released drug maintained its peptide structure and activity. RLX@PMs protected mice from excessive collagen deposition, architectural distortion, and decreased compliance after a single inhalation administration in the bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis model. Moreover, RLX@PMs showed better safety than frequent gavage administration of pirfenidone. We also found RLX-ameliorated human myofibroblast-induced collagen gel contraction and suppressed macrophage polarization to the M2 type, which may be the reason for reversing fibrosis. Hence, RLX@PMs represent a novel strategy for the treatment of IPF and suggest clinical translational potential.

An experimental and numerical approach for thermal performance investigation of solar flat plate collector

The present work aims to investigate thermal performance of a solar flat plate collector using water and Cu-MWCNTs nanoparticle-based hybrid nanofluid both experimentally and numerically. X-ray diffraction and FESEM with EDAX mapping were performed to characterize nanoparticles. The experimental setup was developed for thermal performance of FPC varying flow rates (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 LPM), inclination angle (25°, 30°, 35°, 40°, 45°), volume concentration (0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%), and intensity (400 W/m2). The 3D numerical model having similar geometry as of actual flat plate collector was modeled using Fluents 15.0. The SST turbulence model was used to capture the chaotic changes in the velocity, temperature, and pressure fields. The experimental findings revealed 79.74% improvement in instantaneous efficiency at 0.4% vol., 1.5 LPM, 45° inclination angle, and 400 W/m2 intensity. The maximum deviation between the experimental and numerically calculated outlet and inlet temperature difference (ΔT) was 3.5% using a hybrid nanofluid. When numerical data are compared, instantaneous efficiency and heat gain both deviate by 2.8% and 2.9% from experimental values. Because of the numerical simulation analysis, it is possible to observe the temperature and flow pattern in flat plate collectors using nanofluids under a set of operating conditions, which would not be possible without the simulation.

Design and simulation of a utility oilfield flare in Iraq/Kurdistan region using CFD and API-521 methodology

This paper aims at reviewing and analyzing the operation and design of a utility flare in an oilfield in the Iraq/Kurdistan region. The flare supports a gas separation unit that separates 100 MMSCFD of natural gas from other liquid compounds in petroleum refining. The actual flare dimensions are 50 m high and 0.6 m diameter and works in summer where the crosswind speed is 9 m/s and a flow of 1.2 MMSCFD of treated natural gas is flaring through it. At the beginning, the flare design was performed using the API-521 recommended approach based on full operating capacity of the unit and composition of the gas to be flared. The API-521 based design resulted in a flare with a 0.76 m diameter and 48.19 m height. The effects of stack height on heat radiation in case of full capacity firing showed that as the flare height increases from 42.34 m to 133.05 m, the heat radiation decreases from 15.8 kW/m^2 to 1.6 kW/m^2 within 45.7 m dimeter. Furthermore, the relation between stack height and heat radiation was studied for the actual firing rate 1.2MMSCFD using simulation, where the results showed that as the stack height increasing from 10 m to 50 m the heat radiation decreasing from over 1000 w/m^2 to around 150 W/m^2. In fact, CFD code C3d was used to analyze flare performance at normal firing condition during summer operation of 1.2 MMSCFD with a flare diameter and height of 50 m and 0.6 m, respectively. The code was able to predict the flame shape and size during actual flare operation. The results of the simulation demonstrated by defining four locations in the domain to measure the average temperatures and emissions, and to calculate the Combustion Efficiency (CE) and Destruction and Removal Efficiency (DRE). These points were 6 m, 8 m, 10 m, 12 m far from the tip on x-axis and at height of 52 m. The results showed that the average temperature at 6 m far from the flare is 658 K and it decreasing to 490 K at 12 m away from the tip. The CO and CO2 also decreased from 7.27E-5 and 0.033 mass% to 4.53E-6 and 0.027 mass%, respectively. Generally, soot formation was low but at points 8 m and 10 m from the tip the soot formation was considerably lower, respectively at 6.16E-5 and 8.71E-5 mass%. The emissions of C1, C2, C3 and C6+ were measured at 7.46E-9, 5.39E-9, 5.13E-9 and 4.35E-9 mass% at 6 m away from the tip. The emissions increased slightly at 8 m and 10 m from the tip but at 12 m they were observed to decrease. The flare CE and DRE were estimated to be 98% and 100%, respectively. Analysis results confirmed that the flare design was safe and the flare operation was highly efficient with very little smoke produced as indicated by the predicted CE and DRE.

Computational fluid dynamics-based virtual angiograms for the detection of flow stagnation in intracranial aneurysms

The goal of this study was to test if CFD-based virtual angiograms could be used to automatically discriminate between intracranial aneurysms (IAs) with and without flow stagnation. Time density curves (TDC) were extracted from patient digital subtraction angiography (DSA) image sequences by computing the average gray level intensity inside the aneurysm region and used to define injection profiles for each subject. Subject-specific 3D models were reconstructed from 3D rotational angiography (3DRA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed to simulate the blood flow inside IAs. Transport equations were solved numerically to simulate the dynamics of contrast injection into the parent arteries and IAs and then the contrast retention time (RET) was calculated. The importance of gravitational pooling of contrast agent within the aneurysm was evaluated by modeling contrast agent and blood as a mixture of two fluids with different densities and viscosities. Virtual angiograms can reproduce DSA sequences if the correct injection profile is used. RET can identify aneurysms with significant flow stagnation even when the injection profile is not known. Using a small sample of 14 IAs of which seven were previously classified as having flow stagnation, it was found that a threshold RET value of 0.46 s can successfully identify flow stagnation. CFD-based prediction of stagnation was in more than 90% agreement with independent visual DSA assessment of stagnation in a second sample of 34 IAs. While gravitational pooling prolonged contrast retention time it did not affect the predictive capabilities of RET. CFD-based virtual angiograms can detect flow stagnation in IAs and can be used to automatically identify aneurysms with flow stagnation even without including gravitational effects on contrast agents.

Effect of different degrees of adenoid hypertrophy on pediatric upper airway aerodynamics: a computational fluid dynamics study

To improve the diagnostic accuracy of adenoid hypertrophy (AH) in children and prevent further complications in time, it is important to study and quantify the effects of different degrees of AH on pediatric upper airway (UA) aerodynamics. In this study, based on computed tomography (CT) scans of a child with AH, UA models with different degrees of obstruction (adenoidal-nasopharyngeal (AN) ratio of 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, and 0.6) and no obstruction (AN ratio of 0.5) were constructed through virtual surgery to quantitatively analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of UA with different degrees of obstruction in terms of the peak velocity, pressure drop (△P), and maximum wall shear stress (WSS). We found that two obvious whirlpools are formed in the anterior upper part of the pediatric nasal cavity and in the oropharynx, which is caused by the sudden increase in the nasal cross-section area, resulting in local flow separation and counterflow. In addition, when the AN ratio was ≥ 0.7, the airflow velocity peaked at the protruding area in the nasopharynx, with an increase 1.1-2.7 times greater than that in the nasal valve area; the △P in the nasopharynx was significantly increased, with an increase 1.1-6.8 times greater than that in the nasal cavity; and the maximum WSS of the posterior wall of the nasopharynx was 1.1-4.4 times larger than that of the nasal cavity. The results showed that the size of the adenoid plays an important role in the patency of the pediatric UA.

Fluid Thermodynamic Simulation of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy in Laser Wire Deposition

A 3D numerical model of heat transfer and fluid flow of molten pool in the process of laser wire deposition was presented by computational fluid dynamics technique. The simulation results of the deposition morphology were also compared with the experimental results under the condition of liquid bridge transfer mode. Moreover, they showed a good agreement. Considering the effect of recoil pressure, the morphology of the deposit metal obtained by the simulation was similar to the experiment result. Molten metal at the wire tip was peeled off and flowed into the molten pool, and then spread to both sides of the deposition layer under the recoil pressure. In addition, the results of simulation and high-speed charge-coupled device presented that a wedge transition zone, with a length of ∼6 mm, was formed behind the keyhole in the liquid bridge transfer process, where the height of deposited metal decreased gradually. After solidification, metal in the transition zone retained the original melt morphology, resulting in a decrease in the height of the tail of the deposition layer.

Evaluating planting strategies for outdoor thermal comfort in high-rise residential complexes: a computational fluid dynamics simulation study

This study aims to examine the impact of planting strategies on improving thermal comfort in relation to the existing buildings within real high-rise residential complexes. Using numerical simulation via ENVI-met, we compare six planting scenarios characterized by two locational schemes-open-space planting and building-vicinity planting-and three tree quantities. The results highlight the importance of planting greater numbers of trees, and also of their locations, to moderate the thermal environment. The findings of the study demonstrated that increasing the number of trees in the open space by threefold of the advisory guidelines led to a significant reduction in the average air temperature by 0.87 °C, mean radiant temperature (MRT) by 11.00 °C, physiological equivalent temperature (PET) by 4.50 °C, and wind speed by 0.30 m/s. Planting the minimum number of trees under building-vicinity reduced air temperature by 0.07 °C, MRT by 2.48 °C, and PET by 0.92 °C, while showing a slight increase in wind speed of approximately 0.01 m/s. To achieve improvements in both thermal condition and air flow, we suggest planting rows of trees parallel to the prevailing wind direction in the ventilation corridors at some distance from buildings, to minimize overlap of shade from trees and from buildings. The findings of this study will provide useful guidelines for effective planting design in dense residential areas.

Experimental and Numerical Study of Al2219 Powders Deposition on Al2219-T6 Substrate by Cold Spray: Effects of Spray Angle, Traverse Speed, and Standoff Distance

Cold spray (CS) is an emerging technology for repairing and 3D additive manufacturing of a variety of metallic components using deformable metal powders. In CS deposition, gas type, gas pressure, gas temperature, and powder feed rate are the four key process parameters that have been intensively studied. Spray angle, spray gun traverse speed, and standoff distance (SoD) are the other three process parameters that have been less investigated but are also important, especially when depositing on uneven substrates or building up 3D freeform structures. Herein, the effects of spray angle, traverse speed, and SoD during CS deposition have been investigated holistically on a single material system (i.e., Al2219 powders on Al2219-T6 substrate). The coatings' mass gain, thickness, porosity, and residual stress have been characterized, and the results show that spray angle and traverse speed exercise much more effects than SoD in determining coatings' buildup. Finite element method (FEM) modeling and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation have been carried out to understand the effects of these three parameters for implementing CS as repairing and additive manufacturing using aluminum-based alloy powders.

Machine learning and sensitivity analysis for predicting nasal drug delivery for targeted deposition

Targeted nasal drug delivery can provide improved efficacy for drug formulations to be delivered at high efficacy rates. Some parameters that influence drug delivery have a dependency on the patient's technique of administration and the spray device itself. When the different parameters, each having a specific range of values are combined, the combinatory permutations for studying its effects on particle deposition become large. In this study, we combine six input spray parameters (the spray half-cone angle, the mean spray exit velocity, the breakup length from the nozzle exit, the diameter of the nozzle spray device, the particle size, and the sagittal angle of the spray) with a range of values to produce 384 combinations of spray characteristics. This was repeated for three inhalation flow rates of 20, 40, and 60 L/min. To reduce the computational costs of a full transient Large Eddy Simulation flow field, we create a time-averaged frozen field and perform the time integration of particle trajectories through the flow field to determine the particle deposition in four anatomical regions of the nasal cavity (anterior, middle, olfactory and posterior) for each of the 384 spray field. A sensitivity analysis determined the significance of each input variable on the deposition. It was found the particle size distribution significantly affected deposition in the olfactory and posterior regions, while the spray device insertion angle was significant for deposition in the anterior and middle regions. Five machine learning models were evaluated based on 384 cases and it was found that despite the small sample dataset the simulation data was sufficient to provide accurate machine-learning predictions.

Numerical computation of pulsatile hemodynamics and diagnostic concern of coronary bifurcated artery flow for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid

Atherosclerotic with the high occurrence of plaque formation due to stenosis has attracted wide attention among researchers. The left coronary artery has been studied in two-dimensional and in three-dimensional (3D) bifurcation as the models of blood flow through Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids to better understand the physical mechanism. The computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique is incorporated in COMSOL Multiphysics and then it is justified by satisfactory validation. It is found that the Newtonian model shows larger recirculation zones than non-Newtonian does. The present study also focuses on the evaluations of the lesion of diagnostic and the coefficient of pressure drop assessments on the basis of the diagnostic parameter's critical values affected by the rheological model. Nevertheless, the leading concentration of the subsisting investigation works is confined to the change of importance factor (IFc) affected by arterial blockage. But the IFc of non-Newtonian fluid for 3D left coronary artery bifurcation model decreases with increasing bifurcation angle and the time-averaged inlet pressure is the least for smaller bifurcation angles. The current research further concentrates that the flow separation length reduces with developing bifurcation angle in bifurcated geometry. It is significant to mention that non-Newtonian blood flow model incorporating hemodynamic and diagnostic parameters has great impacts on instantaneous flow systems.

Assessment of heat transfer and the consequences of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles on flow of blood in an abdominal aortic aneurysm

The present study is established on a simulation using CFD analysis in COMSOL. Blood acted as the base fluid with this simulation. The taken flow is been modeled as incompressible, unsteady, laminar and Newtonian fluid, which is appropriate at high rates of shear. The characteristic of flow of blood is been studied in order to determine pressure, velocity and temperature impact caused by an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This work employs nanoparticles of the Iron Oxide (Fe₃O₄) type. The CFD technique is utilized to evaluate the equations of mass, momentum, and energy. The COMSOL software is utilized to generate a normal element sized mesh. The findings of this study demonstrate that velocity alters through aneurysmal part of the aorta, that velocity is higher in a diseased segment, and that velocity increases before and after the aneurysmal region. For the heat transfer feature, the reference temperature and general inward heat flux is taken as 293.15K and 800W/m². The nanoparticles altered blood's physical properties, including conductivity, dynamic viscosity, specific heat, and density. The inclusion of Iron Oxide (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles managed to prevent overheating because taken nanoparticles have significant thermal conductivity. These findings will be extremely beneficial in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

A CFD-FFT approach to hemoacoustics that enables degree of stenosis prediction from stethoscopic signals

In this paper, we identify a new (acoustic) frequency-stenosis relation whose frequencies lie within the recommended auscultation threshold of stethoscopy (< 120 Hz). We show that this relation can be used to extend the application of phonoangiography (quantifying the degree of stenosis from bruits) to widely accessible stethoscopes. The relation is successfully identified from an analysis restricted to the acoustic signature of the von Karman vortex street, which we automatically single out by means of a metric we propose that is based on an area-weighted average of the Q-criterion for the post-stenotic region. Specifically, we perform CFD simulations on internal flow geometries that represent stenotic blood vessels of different severities. We then extract their emitted acoustic signals using the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation, which we subtract from a clean signal (stenosis free) at the same heart rate. Next, we transform this differential signal to the frequency domain and carefully classify its acoustic signatures per six (stenosis-)invariant flow phases of a cardiac cycle that are newly identified in this paper. We then automatically restrict our acoustic analysis to the sounds emitted by the von Karman vortex street (phase 4) by means of our Q-criterion-based metric. Our analysis of its acoustic signature reveals a strong linear relationship between the degree of stenosis and its dominant frequency, which differs considerably from the break frequency and the heart rate (known dominant frequencies in the literature). Applying our new relation to available stethoscopic data, we find that its predictions are consistent with clinical assessment. Our finding of this linear correlation is also unlike prevalent scaling laws in the literature, which feature a small exponent (i.e., low stenosis percentage sensitivity over much of the clinical range). They hence can only distinguish mild, moderate, and severe cases. Conversely, our linear law can identify variations in the degree of stenosis sensitively and accurately for the full clinical range, thus significantly improving the utility of the relevant scaling laws... Future research will investigate incorporating the vibroacoustic role of adjacent organs to expand the clinical applicability of our findings. Extending our approach to more complex 3D stenotic morphologies and including the vibroacoustic role of surrounding organs will be explored in future research to advance the clinical reach of our findings.

Exploring the influence of nasal vestibule structure on nasal obstruction using CFD and Machine Learning method

Motivated by clinical findings about the nasal vestibule, this study analyzes the aerodynamic characteristics of the nasal vestibule and attempt to determine anatomical features which have a large influence on airflow through a combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and machine learning method. Firstly, the aerodynamic characteristics of the nasal vestibule are detailedly analyzed using the CFD method. Based on CFD simulation results, we divide the nasal vestibule into two types with distinctly different airflow patterns, which is consistent with clinical findings. Secondly, we explore the relationship between anatomical features and aerodynamic characteristics by developing a novel machine learning model which could predict airflow patterns based on several anatomical features. Feature mining is performed to determine the anatomical feature which has the greatest impact on respiratory function. The method is developed and validated on 41 unilateral nasal vestibules from 26 patients with nasal obstruction. The correctness of the CFD analysis and the developed model is verified by comparing them with clinical findings.

Application of different mathematical models based on artificial intelligence technique to predict the concentration distribution of solute through a polymeric membrane

Membrane-based purification of therapeutic agents has recently attracted global attention as a promising replacement for conventional techniques like distillation and pervaporation. Despite the conduction of different investigations, development of more research about the operational feasibility of using polymeric membranes to separate the detrimental impurities of molecular entities is of great importance. The focus of this paper is to develop a numerical strategy based on multiple machine learning methods to predict the concentration distribution of solute through a membrane-based separation process. Two inputs are being analyzed in this study, specifically r and z. Furthermore, the single target output is C, and the number of data points exceeds 8000. To analyze and model the data for this study, we used the Adaboost (Adaptive Boosting) model over three different base learners (K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Linear Regression (LR), and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR)). In the process of hyper-parameter optimization for models, the BA optimization algorithm applied on the adaptive boosted models. Finally, Boosted KNN, Boosted LR, and Boosted GPR have scores of 0.9853, 0.8751, and 0.9793 in terms of R² metric. Based on the recent fact and other analyses, boosted KNN model is introduced as the most appropriate model of this research. The error rates for this model are 2.073 × 10¹ and 1.06 × 10^-2 in terms of MAE and MAPE metrics.
