Kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of hydrogen sulfide with diaquacobinamide in aqueous solution

We conducted a detailed kinetic study of the reaction of the vitamin B12 analog diaquacobinamide ((H2O)2Cbi(III)) with hydrogen sulfide in water from pH 3 to 11. The reaction proceeds in three steps: (i) formation of three different complexes between cobinamide and hydrogen sulfide, viz. (HO-)(HS-)Cbi(III), (H2O)(HS-)Cbi(III), and (HS-)2Cbi(III); (ii) inner-sphere electron transfer (ISET) in the two complexes with one coordinated HS- to form the reduced cobinamide complex [(H)S]Cbi(II); and (iii) addition of a second molecule of hydrogen sulfide to the reduced cobinamide. ISET does not proceed in the (HS-)2Cbi(III) complex. The final products of the reaction between cobinamide and hydrogen sulfide were found to be independent of pH, with the main product being a complex of cobinamide(II) with the anion-radical SSH2-.

Reaction mechanisms and rate constants of waste degradation in landfill bioreactor systems with enzymatic-enhancement

Augmenting leachate before recirculation with peroxidase enzymes is a novel method to increase the available carbon, and therefore the food supply to microorganisms at the declining phase of the anaerobic landfill bioreactor operation. In order to optimize the enzyme-catalyzed leachate recirculation process, it is necessary to identify the reaction mechanisms and determine rate constants. This paper presents a kinetic model developed to ascertain the reaction mechanisms and determine the rate constants for enzyme catalyzed anaerobic waste degradation. The maximum rate of reaction (Vmax) for MnP enzyme-catalyzed reactors was 0.076 g(TOC)/g(DS).day. The catalytic turnover number (k(cat)) of the MnP enzyme-catalyzed was 506.7 per day while the rate constant (k) of the un-catalyzed reaction was 0.012 per day.

Stereochemistry and Mechanism of Enzymatic and Non-Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Benzylic sec-Sulfate Esters

The substrate scope of inverting alkylsulfatase Pisa1 was extended towards benzylic sec-sulfate esters by suppression of competing non-enzymatic autohydrolysis by addition of dimethyl sulfoxide as co-solvent. Detailed investigation of the mechanism of autohydrolysis in ¹⁸O-labeled buffer by using an enantiopure sec-benzylic sulfate ester as substrate revealed that from the three possible pathways (i) inverting S_N2-type nucleophilic attack of [OH^–] at the benzylic carbon represents the major pathway, whereas (ii) S_N1-type formation of a planar benzylic carbenium ion leading to racemization was a minor event, and (iii) Retaining S_N2-type nucleophilic attack at sulfur took place at the limits of detection. The data obtained are interpreted by analysis of Hammett constants of meta substituents.

Preparation of Diversely Substituted Triarylmethyl Radicals by the Quenching of Tris(2,3,5,6-tetrathiaaryl)methyl Cations with C-, N-, P-, and S-Nucleophiles

C-, N-, P-, and S-nucleophiles reacted with symmetrical tris(2,3,5,6-tetrathiaaryl)methyl cations, generated from the corresponding triarylmethanols by strong acids, to give a variety of asymmetrical monosubstituted persistent triaryl-methyl (TAM) radicals as the major products. The only byproducts were symmetrical TAMs.

On the Configurational Stability of Chiral Heteroatom-Substituted [D1]Methylpalladium Complexes as Intermediates of Stille and Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reactions

Enantiomerically pure (S)-tributylstannyl[D1]methanol and (R)- and (S)-tributylstannyl[D1]methyl benzoates were Stille-coupled with bromobenzene and benzoyl chloride in 1,4-dioxane and toluene using [(Ph3P)4Pd] or [(Ph3P)2PdCl2] either alone or in combination with CuCN as cocatalyst at temperatures up to 80 °C. The products were found to be enantiomerically pure. (R)- and (S)-N-(tributylstannyl[D1]methyl)phthalimides gave enantiomerically pure products with benzoyl chloride, but with bromobenzene protected phenyl[D1]methylamines gave products of only 52-69 % ee depending on the solvent used. Tributyl(thio[D1]methyl)stannanes could not be Stille-coupled with benzoyl chloride or with bromobenzene. Similarly, dimethyl phenyl[D1]methylboronate underwent a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling with bromobenzene to give phenyl[D1]methylsilane with 99 % ee. All couplings followed a retentive course and, except in one case, the intermediate [XCHDPdL n ] complexes were found to be microscopically configurationally stable.

Generation of Trityl Radicals by Nucleophilic Quenching of Tris(2,3,5,6-tetrathiaaryl)methyl Cations and Practical and Convenient Large-Scale Synthesis of Persistent Tris(4-carboxy-2,3,5,6-tetrathiaaryl)methyl Radical

Tris(2,3,5,6-tetrathiaaryl)methyl cations, which were generated from the corresponding triarylmethanols in the presence of strong acids, underwent reaction with nucleophiles to give trityl radicals, as the product of a one-electron reduction of the carbocation. Depending on the nature of the nucleophile, the only byproducts were either diamagnetic quinone methides or asymmetrical monosubstituted trityl radicals. Herein, we report a protocol for the large-scale synthesis of the Finland trityl, which has the advantage of high overall yield and reproducibility.

Mechanistic Studies on the Reaction of Nitrocobalamin with Glutathione: Kinetic evidence for formation of an aquacobalamin intermediate

The essential but also toxic gaseous signaling molecule nitric oxide is scavenged by the reduced vitamin B12 complex cob(II)alamin. The resulting complex, nitroxylcobalamin (NO--Cbl(III)), is rapidly oxidized to nitrocobalamin (NO2Cbl) in the presence of oxygen; however it is unlikely that nitrocobalamin is itself stable in biological systems. Kinetic studies on the reaction between NO2Cbl and the important intracellular antioxidant, glutathione (GSH), are reported. In this study, a reaction pathway is proposed in which the β-axial ligand of NO2Cbl is first substituted by water to give aquacobalamin (H2OCbl+), which then reacts further with GSH to form glutathionylcobalamin (GSCbl). Independent measurements of the four associated rate constants k1, k-1, k2, and k-2 support the proposed mechanism. These findings provide insight into the fundamental mechanism of ligand substitution reactions of cob(III)alamins with inorganic ligands at the β-axial site.

Aryl Bromides and Aryl Chlorides for the Direct Arylation of Benzylic Amines Mediated by Ruthenium(II)

The ruthenium(II)-catalyzed sp3 C-H bond arylation of benzylic amines with aryl halides is reported. In the present method, aryl iodides and, more importantly, also the cheaper aryl bromides and aryl chlorides can be applied as aryl sources. Additionally, the method does not require elaborate manipulations in a glove box and can be carried out in simple screw cap vials. Potassium pivalate proved to be beneficial for the transformation with aryl bromides or iodides as aryl source, but was not required for aryl chlorides. In the latter case, the addition of PPh3 led to high conversion. 3-Methyl and 3-phenyl pyridine were established as directing groups, and the substituent in the 3-position represents a key structural feature for high conversion. The directing group can be cleaved after the transformation, which allows access to diarylmethylamines. Mechanistic studies were carried out and critically compared to mechanistic reports of related transformations.

Optically Active Organometallic Compounds of Transition Elements with Chiral Metal Atoms

Chiral transition metal atoms are not only present in tris-chelate complexes [M(LL)₃ ]ⁿ⁺ , which were already resolved into the enantiomers by Alfred Werner, but also in organometallic half-sandwich complexes such as 1 with three- or four-legged piano-stool structure. These complexes have been tools in the elucidation of the spatial course of reactions and in organic syntheses. Applications in enantioselective catalysis are beginning to show up.

Valence Bond Diagrams and Chemical Reactivity

A unified description of chemical reactivity is made possible with valence bond (VB) diagrams, such as those shown for the a simple case (only reactants and products must be considered) and a more complex system (an intermediate state also plays an important role; RC = reaction coordinate). Analysis of reactivity and mechanistic problems in organic and organometallic chemistry exemplifies the generality of the VB paradigm: in situ DNA repair, C-F and C-H bond activation, S_RN 2^c mechanism, stepwise versus concerted cycloaddition, and a lot more.

Low-Temperature Photochemistry of Previtamin D: A Hula-Twist Isomerization of a Triene

What is the standard course of the cis-trans isomerization of nonpolar polyenes? Many results support a pathway in which only a central CH group rotates out of the plane, while the remaining parts of the molecule reorient within the plane ("hula-twist" mechanism). The intermediate structure through which the molecule passes corresponds to the geometry predicted for the conical intersection of the S₁ and S₀ potential energy surfaces (see picture).
