Ileocolonic aganglionosis in white progeny of overo spotted horses

The congenital absence of myenteric ganglia in the terminal portion of the ileum, cecum, and entire colon of white foals with overo spotted parents was reported. Males as well as females were affected. The foals were generally normal at birth but did not defecate. Signs of colic were noticed between 5 and 24 hours after birth, with death occurring at 23 to 132 hours.

Prearterial reversed midgut rotation. A rare congenital anomaly

A patient with a right-sided descending colon, left-sided ascending colon, and transverse colon in front of the superior mesenteric artery is described. We believe that this is only the second case of "prearterial" reversed midgut rotation existing with normally situated stomach and liver. The best explanation for these relationships seems to be (a) anomalous positioning of the primitive midgut-hindgut junction right of midline; (b) ensuing midgut rotation in a reversed, or clockwise, direction.

Anomalies of intestinal fixation and position in the adult are discussed. The pathogenesis, pathologic characteristics, clinical manifestations and diagnosis of each have been presented. Anomalies of intestinal fixation and position are the most common anomalies of intestinal development found in the adult.

Two congenital abnormalities in domestic chickens

During routine necropsies performed in domestic chickens, two abnormalities were noticed in adult White Leghorn female birds; one was of the sternal keel (carina), and the other was of the cecum.

Incomplete rotation of the intestine with a normal cecal position

Nineteen patients with incomplete rotation of the intestine, seen during a 3-year period, are presented. Six patients (32%) had a normal cecal position but an abnormal duodenojejunal junction. Three of these patients had a midgut volvulus, and one had obstructing duodenal bands. The two remaining patients were premature and had postnatal fixation of the duodenojejunal junction over a 10-month to 2-year period.

The importance of breastmilk in acute neonatal enterocolitis and other enteric disease

In the Department of Child Health, Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, a case of necrotizing enterocolitis with resection about 50 cm of the ileum was reported.

[Internal hernia through Treves' avascular field defect (author's transl)]

Authors report two cases of internal hernia through Treves avascular field defects, at the ileal level and another case in which this mesenteric mishape was incidentally found during operation for intestinal obstruction due to adhesions. In this particular case it can be speculated that the defect could have been the cause of a former neonatal obstruction for which operation did not offer an explanation. This type of internal hernia is one of the rarest in pediatric surgical practice. The clinical picture is that of an intestinal strangulation and therefore diagnosis can hardly be made preoperatively. The ileal terminal location of the strangulated loop can, in their opinion, justify a resection extending to the caecum in order to avoid vascular risks on the anastomosis in spite of the sacrifice of the ileo-cecal valve. The three patients survived. Literature on this topic is briefly reviewed.

The misplaced caecum and the root of the mesentery

Five cases presenting in late infancy and childhood with symptoms and signs referable to malrotation of the midgut are described. The condition may present with jaundice, malabsorption or the signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction due to internal hernia or volvulus. It may also result in volvulus and gangrene of the midgut. A short root of the mesentery predisposing to this event will be seen on a barium meal and follow through examination and will warn of its impending occurrence.

Ileocecal abnormalities in appendiceal abscess

The radiologic findings were reviewed in 16 patients with surgically proven appendiceal abscesses. The indirect indication of abscess comprised displacement of the cecum or small bowel, deformation of the cecum and filling defects or non-filling of the appendix. One or more of these abnormalities were observed in all the patients. In addition a fistula and a cavity were filled in 2 patients.

Familial retrocecal appendicitis

A family pedigree containing sixteen individuals with acute appendicitis is presented. In all but one the position of the appendix was retrocecal. In two other members explored for abdominal pain wherein acute appendicitis was not the cause, the appendix was also found to be retrocecal. The anatomic retrocecal location of the appendix in this pedigree shows a degree of uniformity that implies a common predisposing factor inherited as a simple, dominant unit-character.

Congenital anomalies of domestic fowl: seven cases

In 13,483 necropsies of domestic fowl, six anomalies were recorded: bifurcation of the metasternum, duplication of the ileum, pancreas divisum (partial), vesica fellea occulta, aplasia of the left cecum, and aplasia of the right kidney (2 cases).
