Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of sources of dietary zinc on gain, feed conversion and blood and bone traits of swine. In the first experiment 96 pigs were used in a 28-d study. The pigs were fed diets with no supplemental Zn or with either 9 or 12 ppm supplemental Zn from zinc sulfate (ZnSO4), zinc methionine (ZnMet) or zinc methionine with picolinic acid (ZnMet w/PA), each with or without 5% added corn oil. There were differences (P less than .05) in average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) between the pigs fed the two organic Zn sources, with those fed ZnMet w/PA showing the better gains and feed conversion. However, neither organic Zn source resulted in pig performance that was different from either the diet with no supplemental Zn or the diets supplemented with Zn from ZnSO4. In the second experiment the same dietary Zn sources and treatments were fed as in Exp. 1 except that corn oil was deleted as a variable. No differences in ADG, ADFI, feed/gain (F/G) or in changes in serum Zn or Cu were observed among treatments during either the 21-d nursery or the 56-d growing periods. During the subsequent 56-d finishing period ADG and ADFI were greater (P less than .01) for pigs fed the Zn-supplemented diets than for those fed the diets without supplemental Zn. There were no differences among treatments in F/G during the finishing period. Zn content of bone ash was lower (P less than .01) in the non-Zn-supplemented pigs. These data suggest that the Zn sources used are of similar biological value and do not support the theory that picolinic acid aids Zn absorption.

Abstract
Weanling crossbred pigs (avg initial wt 6.4 kg) were fed diets containing six levels of threonine to determine the threonine requirement of young pigs fed diets somewhat similar to those used in commercial swine production. The diets (16% crude protein) were composed primarily of grain sorghum, oat groats and soybean meal supplemented with minerals, vitamins, lysine, tryptophan, methionine and isoleucine, and were calculated to be adequate in all nutrients except threonine and crude protein. Threonine levels were .53, .57, .62, .68, .75 and .83% of the diet. There were two trials, each with 96 pigs. The pigs were fed the experimental diets for 28 d. The addition of threonine increased weight gain (P less than .02) and feed efficiency (P less than .001), with most of the response occurring between .53 and .68% threonine. There was little further response when threonine was increased above .68%. Plasma threonine concentrations increased as dietary threonine increased, with a sharp rise when dietary threonine exceeded .68%. Concentrations of most other essential amino acids in the plasma declined in response to increasing dietary threonine, and reached minimum values at either .68 or .75% threonine. Plasma urea concentrations decreased as threonine was increased in the diet, reaching a plateau at .68% dietary threonine. The data indicate the young pigs weaned at 3 to 4 wk of age require approximately .70% threonine.

Abstract
The numbers and subtypes of leukotriene (LT) receptors have only recently been investigated and more work is needed to evaluate the distribution of receptors on tissues and cells in both normal and pathological states. Classification of the heterogeneity of LT receptors may assist in the discovery of new antiallergy and antiinflammatory drugs much in the same way as the study of different adrenergic receptors has benefited cardiovascular drug discovery. The clinical evaluation of the currently available LT antagonists is awaited with interest; however, their therapeutic role in the treatment of asthma, a primary goal for the majority of these agents, will require painstaking clinical appraisal. They seem unlikely to supplant the currently used bronchodilators but may provide a valuable prophylactic adjunct that may suppress some of the inflammatory events that occur in obstructive lung disease. Whether the LT antagonists modify the hyperreactive state that prevails in asthma is also the subject of much speculation.

Abstract
Epidermoid tumors of the spinal canal are rare. We report two patients with intraspinal lesions and radiographically evident calcification. One proved to have an epidermoid tumor. Although the tissue diagnosis in the second was not definitive, it suggested an epidermoid tumor as well. Radiographically visible ossification or calcification has not been reported before in intraspinal epidermoids.

Abstract
Abstract
We examined the effects of Interleukin 1 (IL 1) on rabbit articular chondrocytes with particular emphasis on arachidonic acid metabolism in these cells. Articular chondrocytes were isolated from the knee joints of normal New Zealand white rabbits and were cultured in vitro until confluent. Addition of 5 U/ml of purified IL 1 to chondrocytes led to an early increase in cell-associated phospholipase A2 (PLA2; measured by hydrolysis of [14C]arachidonic acid-labeled E. coli). Within 1 hr after IL 1 addition, cell-associated PLA2 activity was increased by more than threefold relative to basal PLA2 activity, and further increases in cellular enzyme activity were observed up to 48 hr of IL 1 treatment. IL 1 stimulation also led to a time- and dose-related release of extracellular PLA2 and PGE2, but IL 1-induced PLA2 and PGE2 secretion occurred after the initial burst of intracellular PLA2 activity. Similar PLA2 and PGE2 responses were also observed when purified human IL 1 or IL 1-containing conditioned medium from LPS-stimulated human monocytes were used, but recombinant IL 2 or IL 3 were inactive. IL 1-induced chondrocyte PLA2 did not release radiolabeled free fatty acid from phosphatidylethanolamine labeled at the C-1 position with [14C]stearic acid, confirming the identity of this enzyme as PLA2. These data, therefore, provide the first direct evidence that IL 1 activates cellular PLA2, and we propose that PLA2 activation may be an early signal that initiates the inflammatory actions of IL 1.

Abstract
The effect of thiazinamium Cl (TCl) on histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells (RPMC) was investigated. Although TCl inhibited compound 48/80-induced histamine release moderately (IC50 value 40 microM), the drug was a weaker inhibitor of ovalbumin-induced histamine release (100 microM, -21%). In contrast, promethazine HCl (PHCl) was more effective against antigen-induced histamine release (IC50 value 13 microM) than against compound 48/80-induced histamine release (100 microM, -53%). Disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) was effective against both antigen and compound 48/80-induced release of histamine with IC50 values of 7 and 1 microM, respectively. Neither TCl nor DSCG at 1 mM increased spontaneous release of histamine from RPMC, whereas PHCl induced spontaneous release by over 50% at 1 mM. TCl did not inhibit phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity in guinea pig lung at 1 mM, whereas theophylline and DSCG inhibited PDE with IC50 values of 1.1 and 0.32 mM, respectively. These data suggest that high local concentrations of TCl may reduce histamine release during an asthmatic attack and improve its effectiveness as a bronchoprotectant.

Abstract
The immunomodulatory effects of Wy-41,770 (5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5-ylidene) acetic acid, were compared to levamisole and indomethacin in several in vivo models. In the Jerne plaque assay, Wy-41,770 (1 and 100 mg/kg, p.o.) administered on day 1 after sensitization suppressed IgM plaque forming cells (PFC) while levamisole was active when given on days 1 and 2 after sensitization. In contrast, indomethacin administered on days 2 and 3 after sensitization increased PFC. In the rat experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) model, Wy-41,770 reduced limb paralysis at 10 and 100 mg/kg, p.o. when dosed before sensitization. Indomethacin was active too when predosed in the rat EAE model. In the methylated bovine serum albumin model (MBSA) delayed hypersensitivity (DH) model in mouse, Wy-41,770 (10 mg/kg, p.o.) given on day 1 prior to sensitization and day 2 after sensitization in subliminally sensitized animals augmented the DH response while inhibiting the subliminal DH response when administered at 6 hr after challenge. Levamisole showed similar activity in this subliminal model while indomethacin given 6 hr post challenge was inhibitory. All three drugs were inactive in mice normally sensitized to MBSA at the same drug regimens. In guinea pigs, subliminally sensitized to tuberculin, Wy-41,770 (10 and 100 mg/kg, p.o.) and levamisole augmented the DH response. No changes in DH response were observed for both drugs in normally sensitized guinea pigs. In the rat adjuvant arthritic model, Wy-41,770 (5 and 15 mg/kg, p.o.) inhibited day 16 uninjected paw edema and restored significantly the depressed proliferative responses to mitogen by spleen cells taken from the same arthritic rats at day 16. The moderate immunomodulatory activity of Wy-41,770 may contribute along with its antiinflammatory activity, towards the treatment of arthritic diseases.

Abstract
Tracheal strips were obtained from guinea pigs actively sensitized to chicken ovalbumin (OA). OA-induced contractile responses, obtained by cumulative log addition, were found to be comparable both temporally and in magnitude with responses obtained by single addition of OA. The concentration-response curve obtained by cumulative addition of OA was partially inhibited by pretreatment of tissues with chlorpheniramine. On tracheal spirals treated with chlorpheniramine, indomethacin enhanced OA-induced contractile responses. In the presence of chlorpheniramine and indomethacin, pretreatment with one of the reference 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors (ETYA, NDGA, phenidone or BW-755C) both reduced the maximum contractile response and produced a rightward shift of the OA concentration-response curve. The data suggest that cumulative log addition of OA, on the indomethacin- and chlorpheniramine-treated guinea-pig trachea, is a useful model for evaluating compounds active as either inhibitors of 5-lipoxygenase or antagonists of the products of this pathway.

Abstract
Inhibitors of arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism and other pharmacologic agents were evaluated against ear edema produced in mice by tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA) or AA. Drugs were administered orally and topically either 30 min prior to AA or 30 min after TPA, except for steroids which were administered 2.5-3 hr prior to AA. Several cyclooxygenase (CO) inhibitors including indomethacin, aspirin, piroxicam and timegadine were without effect when administered orally against either irritant; the same drugs inhibited TPA edema when they were administered topically. Mixed CO/lipoxygenase (LO) inhibitors, phenidone and BW755C, were active orally against AA edema (ED50S of 84 and 65 mg/kg, respectively) and against TPA edema (ED50S of 235 and 88 mg/kg, respectively). Phenidone was more active topically against AA edema (ED50, 0.1 mg/ear) than BW755C (ED50, 2.8 mg/ear); however, BW755C was more active topically against TPA edema (ED50, 0.2 mg/ear) than phenidone (ED50, 0.6 mg/ear). Methylprednisolone was very effective in the AA (oral ED50, 17 mg/kg; topical ED50, greater than 1 mg/ear) and TPA models (oral ED50, 4.3 mg/kg; topical ED50, 0.03 mg/ear. MK-447 was topically and orally effective only in the TPA model. Not surprisingly, drugs were more effective topically than orally in both mouse ear edema assays. The models were somewhat selective for CO and CO/LO inhibitors; however, dapsone was orally effective in the ear models, and a number of mediator antagonists and CNS drugs, especially anti-psychotics, were topically active primarily against TPA edema. These models may be useful for the detection of in vivo activity of CO/LO or 5-LO inhibitors.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of monohydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (monoHETEs) on lipoxygenase- and cyclooxygenase-catalyzed reactions in glycogen-elicited rat PMNs challenged with A23187 and exogenous [14C]arachidonic acid. A23187 (10 microM) stimulated a 10-, 4-, 1.7- and 1.8-fold increase in the synthesis of radiolabeled 5-HETE, LTB4, TxB2, and PGE2 by rat PMNs. Addition of 5-HETE, 5 lactone-HETE, 12-HETE, and 15-HETE led to a dose-related reduction in [14C]5-HETE and [14C]LTB4 synthesis by these cells. These monoHETEs also inhibited [14C]TxB2 synthesis, but only 5-HETE and 5 lactone-HETE inhibited the synthesis of [14C]PGE2. Both 12-HETE and 15-HETE failed to reduce the formation of [14C]PGE2. These results suggest that monoHETEs differ significantly in their effects on arachidonic acid metabolism in rat PMNs and may play a role in modulating the synthesis of both lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase products.

Abstract
A total of 146 primiparous sows was used in four replications of an experiment to investigate the effect of energy intake during a 28-d lactation on sow and litter performance. Dietary treatments consisted of three energy intakes; 10, 12 or 14 Mcal of metabolizable energy (ME) X sow-1 X d-1. All sows were fed equal amounts of crude protein, vitamins and minerals daily, which met or exceeded standard recommendations. The experiment was initiated at parturition. Sow weight and backfat loss during lactation decreased linearly (P less than .001) as energy intake increased. There were no differences in litter size at either 14 d of lactation or weaning. Pig weights on d 14 increased linearly (P less than .05) and litter weights tended to increase linearly (P = .13) as energy intake increased. At weaning, pig weights and litter weights increased (P less than .05) as sow energy intake increased. There were no significant differences in the percentages of sows in estrus by 7, 14, 21 and 70 d postweaning, but sows fed 10 Mcal ME/d had a slightly longer interval from weaning to first estrus than sows fed higher energy intakes. Serum urea concentrations of sows were inversely related to energy intake during lactation. Serum creatinine concentrations were not affected by energy intake. An intake of 10 Mcal ME/d by primiparous sows during a 28-d lactation resulted in reduced sow and litter performance; there was little difference between sows fed 12 and 14 Mcal ME/d.

Abstract
The antiinflammatory activity of the immunomodulatory agent Wy-18,251 (3-(p-chlorophenyl)thiazolo-[3,2-a]benzimidazole-2-acetic acid) was examined using a variety of antiinflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic animal models in comparison to aspirin, levamisole and indomethacin. The acute antiinflammatory and analgesic activity of Wy-18,251 (ED50 = 100-200 mg/kg, p.o.) was similar to aspirin, but in contrast to aspirin Wy-18,251 failed to demonstrate antipyretic activity. Wy-18,251 (10-100 mg/kg, p.o.) also inhibited chronic inflammatory responses in the adjuvant- and collagen-induced arthritis models. Wy-18,251 was a modest inhibitor of prostaglandin biosynthesis but did not inhibit either 5- or 15-lipoxygenase enzymes. Wy-18,251 (up to 480 mg/kg, p.o.) produced little gastrointestinal pathology in 16 h fasted rats. The combined immunomodulatory and antiinflammatory activity of Wy-18,251 suggests that this agent may have therapeutic promise in certain immunoinflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
Meningiomas not uncommonly spread outside the central nervous system, but primary extracranial meningiomas are much less common, the sites described including the orbit, the calvarium, the neck, the temporal bone and the paranasal sinuses. Reported here is the first instance of extracranial meningioma of the nasopharynx. The histological appearance of meningiomas is diverse, and in ectopic sites can be mistaken for malignant epithelial tumors, as happened here initially. The tumor was excised via a transpalatal flap using an intracapsular debulking approach borrowed from the armamentarium of the intracranial surgeon. Prolonged follow-up with interval CT scans are recommended in patients with apparent ectopic meningioma, in case undemonstrable intracranial disease later becomes manifest.

Abstract
Four trials were conducted with 1,480 pigs (initial wt: 23 kg in trial 1,29 kg in trial 2 and 49 kg in trial 3 and 4) to determine the effect of dietary fat on pig performance, nutrient separation in an automated feed distribution system, dust levels in swine buildings and integrity of the respiratory system of swine. Two modified-open-front (B-1 and B-2) and two environmentally regulated (E-1 and E-2) growing-finishing buildings, of identical design, were used in each trial. In trial 1, 250 pigs (25 pens of 10 pigs/pen) in B-1 were fed a ground, mixed, corn-soybean meal diet (15% crude protein) with added tallow (5%), and 250 pigs in B-2 were fed the same diet but without added tallow. The assignment of diets to buildings were reversed in trial 2 in which 2.5% tallow was used instead of 5%. Each diet was fed ad libitum to pigs, and was distributed by an automated "Flexauger" system in trials 1 and 2. In each of trials 3 and 4, 120 pigs (12 pens of 10 10 pigs/pen) in E-1 were fed a corn-soybean meal diet (14% crude protein) with added tallow (5%) and 120 pigs in E-2 were fed the same diet but without added tallow. Overall, pigs fed the diet with tallow gained faster (P less than .002), consumed less feed (P less than .02) and converted feed more efficiently (P less than .002) than those fed the diet without tallow in trials 1 and 2. Pig performance was also improved by the addition of tallow to the diet in trials 3 and 4 (P less than .002). Crude protein, Ca, P and Cu contents of both diets were similar at each location sampled throughout the automated distribution system in trials 1 and 2. Addition of tallow to the diets reduced aerial dust levels, both with the feed distribution auger running (P less than .002) and without the auger running (P = .06) in trials 1 and 2. In trials 3 and 4, adding 5% tallow to the diet reduced aerial dust concentrations of of particle sizes of 14, 4, and 1.5 micron (P less than .002) and .4 micron (P = .07). The amount of settled dust was lower (P less than .001, trials 1, 3 and 4) when tallow was included in the diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
Five experiments were conducted to determine (1) the value of simple vs complex diets on gains and feed conversion of pigs weaned at a constant age but varying in weight, (2) the optimum postweaning time to change from a complex to a simple diet and (3) the effect of previous treatment on subsequent performance. In the first experiment, pigs were weaned at 3 wk +/- 3 d and assigned within four weight groups (4.1, 5.0, 5.6 and 6.7 kg) to a simple or complex diet that was fed for 28 d. The complex diet improved (P less than .01) pig performance in all weight groups. As anticipated, the heavier pigs (5.6 and 6.7 kg) ate more (P less than .02) and grew faster (P less than .03) than did their lighter weight littermates (4.1 and 5.0 kg). The second experiment involved pigs weaned at 3 wk +/- 3 d that were assigned within two weight groups (4.4 and 6.6 kg) and fed a complex diet for 10 d, after which one-half of each weight group was switched to a simple diet. Pigs fed the complex diet for the entire 24-d period gained faster (P less than .05) and were more efficient (P less than .05) than those changed to the simple diet after 10 d. The heavier weight (6.6 kg) pigs ate more (P less than .02) and gained faster (P less than .02) than did the lighter weight (4.4 kg) pigs.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
One-hundred-ninety-two weanling pigs from two separate trials, (initial weight 6.0 and 5.6 kg) and 400 growing-finishing pigs (initial weight 17 kg) were fed normal and high lysine corn diets containing four levels of lysine in a 2 X 4 factorial arrangement. Crossbred (Large White X Landrace X Duroc) pigs were used in all experiments. The objectives of the experiments were to (1) compare normal and high lysine corn when fed at different lysine levels, (2) determine the lysine requirements for the three stages of growth and (3) evaluate the effect of protein level on the lysine requirement. All diets were balanced on a lysine basis. The results indicated that both weanling and growing-finishing pig performance and final carcass composition were similar for pigs fed normal or high lysine corn diets balanced on a lysine basis. Weanling pigs from 5 to 14 kg required at least 1.10% lysine. Based on changes in body weight gain and feed efficiency, the lysine requirement of growing pigs (17 to 54 kg) was .70%, and that of finishing pigs (54 to 101 kg) was .50%. However, based on lean tissue growth rate (as reflected by longissimus muscle area and percentage of lean in the carcass) the requirement was at least .75% during the growing stage and .60% during the finishing stage. The reduced protein level (2% lower) of the high lysine corn diets did not reduce the lysine required by pigs compared with those fed normal corn.

Abstract
The present study demonstrated that acid-extracted platelet phospholipase A2 (PLA2) exhibited marked hydrolytic activity against both [1-14C]oleic acid- and [1-14C]arachidonic acid-labeled Escherichia coli. The rate of hydrolysis was linear up to 30 min and was directly proportional to the amount of enzyme added to the reaction mixture. The data further indicated that 5-hydroxy-6,8,11,15-eicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) inhibited platelet PLA2 in a dose-dependent manner (IC50 = 42 microM), whereas 5-lactone HETE had no inhibitory effect up to 100 microM. The degree of inhibition of PLA2 activity was unaffected by Ca2+ concentrations but was reduced in the presence of increasing amounts of E. coli substrate. Both 12-hydroxy-5,8,10,14-eicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE) and 15-hydroxy-5,8,11,13-eicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) also inhibited platelet PLA2 activity (IC50 = 26 and 72 microM respectively). Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of these monoHETEs were confirmed with a PLA2 preparation derived from rat neutrophils. Thus, these data suggest a novel pharmacological action of HETEs on PLA2 which may have potential ramifications in the regulation of arachidonic acid metabolism.

Abstract
Painful ophthalmoplegia due to lesions in the region of the anterior cavernous sinus and superior orbital fissure may elude early diagnosis. Principal disease categories to be considered in patients with this complaint are neoplasm, vascular lesion, and inflammation. Although high-resolution computerized tomography (CT) may be helpful, definitive diagnosis frequently requires histological examination of tissue. In suitable patients this may be obtained by transsphenoidal or orbital biopsy. The orbital fine-needle aspiration technique has been recommended, but experience with this method is limited, and a definitive diagnosis cannot always be reached. The authors have established that, in suitable patients, the fine-needle aspiration technique with CT guidance may also be employed safely and effectively for lesions of the anterior cavernous sinus.

Abstract
A 72-year-old woman presented with painful proptosis of the right eye and a large destructive tumour of the middle cranial fossa. A diagnosis of IgDK multiple myeloma was made, based on histopathologic and immunologic studies of the biopsy. Biochemistry and bone marrow examination further confirmed the myeloma as IgDK type. The clinical, radiological, and pathological findings are presented. The patient was treated with radiotherapy with satisfactory results.

Abstract
The effects of 5-, 5-lactone, 12- and 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs) on the synthesis of leukotriene C4 (LTC4), thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by mouse resident peritoneal macrophages incubated with zymosan particles (100 micrograms/ml) were investigated. Zymosan phagocytosis stimulated a 110-, 16-, and 16-fold increase in LTC4, TXB2 and PGE2 synthesis, respectively. 15-HETE inhibited zymosan-induced LTC4 (IC50 = 1.1 microM) and TXB2 (IC50 = 38.9 microM) synthesis; in contrast, 15-HETE induced a consistent but variable enhancement of PGE2 synthesis. 5-HETE (IC50 = 15 microM), 5-lactone HETE (IC50 = 10.4 microM) and 12-HETE (IC50 = 13 microM) also inhibited LTC4 synthesis but they were approximately an order of magnitude less potent than 15-HETE. Furthermore, 5-HETE, 5-lactone HETE and 12-HETE inhibited TXB2 (IC50 = 20.4, 16.9 and 11.8 microM, respectively) and PGE2 (IC50 = 38.6, 2.3 and 11.6 microM, respectively) synthesis. Thus, monoHETEs exert modulatory actions on arachidonic acid metabolism and the different isomers of HETE differ quantitatively and qualitatively in their actions.
