Abstract
The Asian subterranean termite, Coptotermes gestroi, originally from northeast India through Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Indonesian archipelago, is a major termite pest introduced in several countries around the world, including Brazil. We sequenced the mitochondrial COII gene from individuals representing 23 populations. Phylogenetic analysis of COII gene sequences from this and other studies resulted in two main groups: (1) populations of Cleveland (USA) and four populations of Malaysia and (2) populations of Brazil, four populations of Malaysia, and one population from each of Thailand, Puerto Rico, and Key West (USA). Three new localities are reported here, considerably enlarging the distribution of C. gestroi in Brazil: Campo Grande (state of Mato Grosso do Sul), Itajaí (state of Santa Catarina), and Porto Alegre (state of Rio Grande do Sul).

Abstract
Ghrelin and obestatin are two peptides associated with appetite control and the regulation of energy balance in adults. It is intuitive that they have an important role in growth and development during puberty. Therefore, it is acknowledged that these peptides, in addition to others, form part of the substrate underlying energy homeostasis which in turn will contribute to body weight regulation and could explain changes in energy balance during puberty. Both peptides originate from the stomach; hence, it is intuitive that they are involved in generating signals from tissue stores which influence food intake. This could be manifested via alterations in the drive to eat (i.e. hunger), eating behaviors and appetite regulation. Furthermore, there is some evidence that these peptides might also be associated with physical activity behaviors and metabolism. Anecdotally, children and adolescents experience behavioral and metabolic changes during growth and development which will be associated with physiological changes.

Abstract
Cichlid fishes have been the subject of increasing scientific interest because of their rapid adaptive radiation that has led to extensive ecological diversity and because of their enormous importance to tropical and subtropical aquaculture. To further understanding of chromosome evolution among cichlid species, we have comparatively mapped the SATA satellite DNA, the transposable element ROn-1, and repeated sequences in the bacterial artificial chromosome clone BAC-C4E09 on the chromosomes of a range of African species of Cichlidae, using fluorescence in situ hybridization. The SATA satellite DNA was mapped in almost all the centromeres of all tilapiine and haplochromine species studied. The maintenance and centromeric distribution of the SATA satellite DNA in African cichlids suggest that this sequence plays an important role in the organization and function of the centromere in these species. Furthermore, analysis of SATA element distribution clarifies that chromosome fusions occurred independently in Oreochromis and Tilapia genera, and led to the reduced chromosome number detected in O. karongae and T. mariae. The comparative chromosome mapping of the ROn-1 SINE-like element and BAC-C4E09 shows that the repeated sequences have been maintained among tilapiine, haplochromine and hemichromine fishes and has demonstrated the homology of the largest chromosomes among these groups. Furthermore, the mapping of ROn-1 suggested that different chromosomal rearrangements could have occurred in the origin of the largest chromosome pairs of tilapiines and non-tilapiines.

Abstract
The wolf fish Hoplias malabaricus (Erythrinidae) presents a high karyotypic diversity, with 7 karyomorphs identified. Karyomorph A is characterized by 2n = 42 chromosomes, without morphologically differentiated sex chromosomes. Karyomorph B also has 2n = 42 chromosomes for both sexes, but differs by a distinct heteromorphic XX/XY sex chromosome system. The cytogenetic mapping of 5 classes of repetitive DNA indicated similarities between both karyomorphs and the probable derivation of the XY chromosomes from pair No. 21 of karyomorph A. These chromosomes appear to be homeologous since the distribution of (GATA)(n) sequences, 18S rDNA and 5SHindIII-DNA sites supports their potential relatedness. Our data indicate that the differentiation of the long arms of the X chromosome occurred by accumulation of heterochromatin and 18S rDNA cistrons from the ancestral homomorphic pair No. 21 present in karyomorph A. These findings are further supported by the distribution of the Cot-1 DNA fraction. In addition, while the 18S rDNA cistrons were maintained and amplified on the X chromosomes, they were lost in the Y chromosome. The X chromosome was a clearly preferred site for the accumulation of DNA repeats, representing an unusual example of an X clustering more repetitive sequences than the Y during sex chromosome differentiation in fish.

Abstract
Three species of cichlids belonging to the genus Symphysodon have demonstrated interspecific and intraspecific variation in nucleolus organizer regions (NOR) detected with silver nitrate. In order to understand the evolution of this marker in the genus, the structural variability of these sequences in mitotic chromosomes from Symphysodon aequifasciatus, Symphysodon discus and Symphysodon haraldi was investigated using both silver nitrate impregnation and hybridization of the 18S rRNA gene probe. For the three species, the two markers were intraspecifically and interspecifically variable both in the number and in the size of the sites. This polymorphism may stem from duplications and translocations, which suggests that structural chromosome rearrangements effectively act in the karyoevolution of wild Symphysodon species and may have favoured the adaptability of these fishes to diverse aquatic environments in the Amazon.

Abstract
CONTEXT The magnitude of exercise-induced weight loss depends on the extent of compensatory responses. An increase in energy intake is likely to result from changes in the appetite control system toward an orexigenic environment; however, few studies have measured how exercise impacts on both orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of medium-term exercise on fasting/postprandial levels of appetite-related hormones and subjective appetite sensations in overweight/obese individuals. DESIGN AND SETTING We conducted a longitudinal study in a university research center. PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTION Twenty-two sedentary overweight/obese individuals (age, 36.9 +/- 8.3 yr; body mass index, 31.3 +/- 3.3 kg/m(2)) took part in a 12-wk supervised exercise programme (five times per week, 75% maximal heart rate) and were requested not to change their food intake during the study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES We measured changes in body weight and fasting/postprandial plasma levels of glucose, insulin, total ghrelin, acylated ghrelin (AG), peptide YY, and glucagon-like peptide-1 and feelings of appetite. RESULTS Exercise resulted in a significant reduction in body weight and fasting insulin and an increase in AG plasma levels and fasting hunger sensations. A significant reduction in postprandial insulin plasma levels and a tendency toward an increase in the delayed release of glucagon-like peptide-1 (90-180 min) were also observed after exercise, as well as a significant increase (127%) in the suppression of AG postprandially. CONCLUSIONS Exercise-induced weight loss is associated with physiological and biopsychological changes toward an increased drive to eat in the fasting state. However, this seems to be balanced by an improved satiety response to a meal and improved sensitivity of the appetite control system.

Abstract
AIM To analyse whether changes in physical activity index (PAI), screen time (ST: television, computer) and body mass index (BMI) made a contribution to longitudinal changes in fitness of children and adolescents. Additionally, we analysed the interaction between baseline fitness level and changes in fitness. METHODS This is a 3-year longitudinal study of 345 high school students aged 11-19 years. Students performed curl-ups, push-ups and 20-m shuttle run tests from Fitnessgram. PA and ST were evaluated using a standard questionnaire. Standardized scores of fitness tests were summed. Changes over time were calculated as Delta(1) (2007 minus 2006), Delta(2) (2008 minus 2007) and Delta(3) (2008 minus 2006). RESULTS Changes in PAI were positively and independently associated with changes in fitness in Delta(1), Delta(2) and Delta(3). Changes in BMI were negatively associated with changes in fitness in Delta(3). Participants highly fit at baseline were those who showed positive changes in PAI over Delta(3), decreased changes in ST and had the lowest increase in BMI over 3 years compared with those low-fit at baseline. CONCLUSIONS Changes in BMI were associated with changes in fitness over 3 years. However, changes in PAI were the best predictor for changes in fitness in each year and over the 3 years of evaluation in youth.

Abstract
Realizou-se um estudo para caracterizar a situação epidemiológica da brucelose bovina no Estado de Santa Catarina. O Estado foi estratificado em cinco circuitos produtores. Em cada circuito produtor foram amostradas aleatoriamente cerca de 300 propriedades e, dentro dessas, foi escolhido, de forma aleatória, um número pré-estabelecido de animais, dos quais foi obtida uma amostra de sangue. No total foram amostrados 7801 animais, provenientes de 1586 propriedades. O protocolo de testes utilizado foi o da triagem com o teste do antígeno acidificado tamponado e o reteste dos positivos com o do 2-mercaptoetanol. O rebanho foi considerado positivo se pelo menos um animal foi reagente às duas provas sorológicas. As prevalências de focos e de animais infectados no Estado foram de 0,32% [0,10-0,69%] e 0,06% [0,0-0,17%], respectivamente. A prevalência de focos nos circuitos pecuários foram: circuito 1, 0,33% [0,0-0,99%]; circuito 2, 0,33% [0,0-1,0%]; circuito 3, 0,25% [0,0-0,75%]; circuito 4, 0,66% [0,08-1,84%] e circuito 5, 0,33% [0,0-1,0%].

Abstract
Karyotype and chromosomal characteristics from 3 allopatric populations of Hoplias malabaricus, cytogenetically the most studied Erythrinidae taxon, were investigated using different staining techniques (C-, Ag-, and CMA(3) banding) as well as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect 18S rDNA, 5S rDNA, and 5SHindIII satellite DNA sites. The isolation, cloning and characterization of an 18S rDNA probe from H. malabaricus genome were also performed for the first time in order to develop a more specific probe. The 3 populations, named PR, CR, and DR, showed identical karyotypes, with 2n = 42 chromosomes composed of 11 m pairs and 10 sm pairs, without heteromorphic sex chromosomes, which characterize the populations as belonging to karyomorph A. In all populations C-positive heterochromatin was situated in the centromeric/pericentromeric regions of the chromosomes, as well as in the telomeric region of several pairs. A conspicuous proximal heterochromatic block on the long arm of pair No. 16 was the only GC-rich segment in the karyotypes. 5SHindIII satellite DNA was always mapped in the centromeric region of several chromosomes. The 18S rDNA sites were situated on the telomeric or centromeric regions, whereas the 5S rDNA showed an interstitial or proximal location in some pairs. Several chromosomes bearing these repetitive DNA sequences were shared by the 3 populations, alongside with some exclusive chromosomal markers. In this sense, population CR was the most differentiated one, including a syntenic condition for the 18S and 5S rDNA probes, as confirmed by double FISH. Thus, despite their inclusion in the same major karyotypic group, the distinct populations cannot be considered an absolute evolutionary unit, as evidenced by their inner chromosomal differentiations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The respiratory system changes with age and understanding these changes helps detect and prevent respiratory dysfunctions in the elderly. AIMS This study compares the respiratory pattern in healthy non-smoker adults and the elderly, using lung function testing and expansion of the chest to confirm the effects of aging on lung function. METHODOLOGY We used lung function testing to measure forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, peak expiratory flow rate and maximum voluntary ventilation. We also measured expansion of the chest. Measurements were taken with subjects resting in the dorsal recumbent position with upper body elevated to 45 masculine. Statistical analysis consisted of the Student T test for independent samples, the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test with a p <0.05 level, and linear regression analysis, also with a p <0.05 level, to assess correlation between variables studied and age. Our population consisted of 35 elderly subjects and 35 adults. 15 of the elderly subjects were male (43%) and 20 female (57%). 16 of the adult group were male (46%) and 19 female (54%). The sample was mapped in terms of age, weight, height, abdominal girth and clinical data, to exclude factors which could distort the results. RESULTS The difference between the two study groups attained statistical significance for all parameters measured. The linear relationship was also significant between age and all parameters and a negative and significant correlation was seen. Expansion of the chest in females was the parameter most inversely correlated with age (60.37%). The lung function testing variable with the greatest difference between the groups was peak expiratory flow rate (35.77% in females and 36.17% in males). CONCLUSIONS Our results show differences in the respiratory patterns of healthy adults and the elderly, suggesting that age impacts on lung function. Both male and female elderly subjects had lower lung function testing scores than the adult subjects, with this difference more marked in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several risk factors for asthma have been identified in infants and young children with recurrent wheeze. However, published literature has reported contradictory findings regarding the underlying immunological mechanisms. OBJECTIVES This study was designed to assess and compare the immunological status during the first 2 years in steroid-naive young children with >or= three episodes of physician-confirmed wheeze (n=50), with and without clinical risk factors for developing subsequent asthma (i.e. parental asthma or a personal history of eczema and/or two of the following: wheezing without colds, a personal history of allergic rhinitis and peripheral blood eosinophilia >4%), with age-matched healthy controls (n=30). METHODS Peripheral blood CD4(+)CD25(+) and CD4(+)CD25(high) T cells and their cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4), GITR and Foxp3 expression were analysed by flow cytometry. Cytokine (IFN-gamma, TGF-beta and IL-10), CTLA-4 and Foxp3 mRNA expression were evaluated (real-time PCR) after peripheral blood mononuclear cell stimulation with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) (24 h) and house dust mite (HDM) extracts (7th day). RESULTS Flow cytometry results showed a significant reduction in the absolute number of CD4(+)CD25(high) and the absolute and percentage numbers of CD4(+)CD25(+)CTLA-4(+) in wheezy children compared with healthy controls. Wheezy children at a high risk of developing asthma had a significantly lower absolute number of CD4(+)CD25(+) (P=0.01) and CD4(+)CD25(high) (P=0.04), compared with those at a low risk. After PMA stimulation, CTLA-4 (P=0.03) and Foxp3 (P=0.02) expression was diminished in wheezy children compared with the healthy children. After HDM stimulation, CTLA-4 (P=0.03) and IFN-gamma (P=0.04) expression was diminished in wheezy children compared with healthy children. High-risk children had lower expression of IFN-gamma (P=0.03) compared with low-risk and healthy children and lower expression of CTLA-4 (P=0.01) compared with healthy children. CONCLUSIONS Although our findings suggest that some immunological parameters are impaired in children with recurrent wheeze, particularly with a high risk for asthma, further studies are needed in order to assess their potential as surrogate predictor factors for asthma in early life.

Abstract
O constructo Qualidade de Vida assumiu crescente relevância com a consciencialização de que “curar” uma doença não é o único resultado das intervenções de saúde. Torna-se importante possuir um instrumento de avaliação da qualidade de vida que seja apropriado, a nível psicométrico, para a avaliação do impacto de programas de intervenção na área da saúde. Foi realizada a validação para a população idosa portuguesa de um instrumento australiano de avaliação de Qualidade de Vida, o The Assessment of Quality of Life Instrument (AQoL.). Foram respeitadas as características da versão australiana na adaptação (factores e número de itens). A variância explicada pelos diferentes factores apresenta diferenças relativamente à versão original, sinalizando a seguinte ordem de valorização dos factores associados pelo IAQdV à qualidade de vida dos idosos portugueses: Vida independente > Bem-estar psicológico > Sentidos > Doença > Relações sociais. São discutidas variáveis condicionantes da qualidade de vida percepcionada nesta amostra.
