Abstract
We report a computational investigation of electron scattering by anthracene (C14H10) in the gas phase. Integral and differential cross sections have been calculated by employing two distinct ab-initio quantum scattering methods: the symmetry adapted-single centre expansion method (ePOLYSCAT) and a screening corrected form of the independent atom model (IAM-SCAR) at low and high energies, respectively. After a detailed evaluation of the current results, we present a complete set of integral scattering cross sections from 0.00001 to 10,000 eV.

Abstract
We report on differential cross section (DCS) measurements for the electron-impact excitation of the electronic states of pyrimidine. The energy range of the present measurements was 15-50 eV with the angular range of the measurements being 10°-90°. All measured DCSs displayed forward-peaked angular distributions, consistent with the relatively large magnitudes for the dipole moment and dipole polarizability of pyrimidine. Excitations to triplet states were found to be particularly important in some energy loss features at the lower incident electron energies. To the best of our knowledge there are no other experimental data or theoretical computations against which we can compare the present results.

Abstract
Lead selenide nanoparticles (PbSe NPs) have been obtained through an easy and low cost route using colloidal synthesis in aqueous solution. The synthesis was carried out at room temperature using Extran (Na₅P₃O₁₀, NaOH and H₂O) as surfactant. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) was used to eliminate the generated by-products. The size of PbSe NPs was varied by changing the Pb:Se molar concentration. The PbSe NPs were characterized by powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDAX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The XRD measurements showed that the PbSe NPs have the face-centered cubic phase structure. The crystal size was found to be between 14 and 20 nm as calculated from the XRD patterns and these values were corroborated with SEM and TEM. Additionally, HRTEM micrographs showed crystalline planes at (200), (220) and (111) of the PbSe NPs, in agreement with the XRD results.

Abstract
Vulcan XC-72R-supported Fe catalysts have been synthesised for the electroreduction of CO2to high-added value products. Catalysts were obtained by the polyol method, using ethylene glycol as solvent and reducing agent. Prior to the metal deposition, Vulcan was subjected to different oxidation treatments in order to modify its surface chemistry and study its influence on the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the catalysts, as well as on the product distribution. The oxidation treatments of the supports modify their textural properties, but do not affect significantly the physicochemical properties of catalysts. However, DEMS studies showed that the carbon support degradation, the distribution of products, and the catalytic activity toward the CO2electroreduction reaction depend significantly on the surface chemistry of the carbon support.

Abstract
AIM We sought to describe the epidemiological and clinical data from our patients in the Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (PEMU) of the Sant Joan de Deu Hospital of Barcelona, and determine the variables of risk for mental retardation. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective review of PEMU reports and hospital discharge summaries from March 2005 to December 2008 was conducted. The data from patients with intelligence quotient (IQ) estimated, older than 3 years of age and with epileptic electroencephalography (EEG) activity was analyzed in 158 patients (8.8 +/- 5.2 years; 55.1% boys). Of those pediatric patients, 63 had IQ less than 70 and 47 an IQ greater than or equal to 70. Intractable epilepsy was present in all of them. RESULTS The percentage of the patients with mental retardation is significantly higher in patients with onset of epilepsy before 24 months (68.3%) than patients with later onset (27.7%). Onset of seizures, EEG findings and epilepsy etiology are significant risk factors for mental retardation. CONCLUSIONS Early age at seizure, multifocal epilepsy and cryptogenic etiology are factors of worse prognosis to normal development of cognitive functions in pediatric intractable epilepsy.

Abstract
In a 12-month longitudinal study, a cohort of Mexican HIV+/AIDS patients was checked several times for Entamoeba infection, with the parasites identified, as E. histolytica or E. dispar, using PCR. The polymorphic region of the parasites' chitinase genes was investigated by PCR, with the variation in amplicon sizes being used as a measure of the genetic variation among the isolates. The patients found infected with Entamoeba at the start of the study displayed varied patterns of infection clearance and re-infection. The analysis of the polymorphisms in the chitinase gene revealed seven polymorphic patterns in the E. histolytica isolates investigated and three in the E. dispar isolates. Many of the patients were each re-infected with Entamoeba at least once during the 12 months of follow-up. As seen in a previous study in Mexico, none of the E. histolytica-infected patients developed any clinical symptoms of invasive amoebiasis during the follow-up period. The results highlight the complexity of the host-parasite relationship in human amoebiasis.
