Concentration of immunoglobulins in the tonsils

The concentration of various immunoglobulins in the faucial tonsil was determined and expressed as a portion of the total protein centration of IgA rises with age while that of IgM falls. IgE was found to be relatively high and the highest levels of all immunoglobulins examined were noted in hypertrophied tonsils. They were lowest in the atrophic tonsils of children and in adult tonsils. The results are discussed in their relevance to the overall immunological function of the faucial tonsil.

We have studied at 200 tonsils the tissue concentration and the organ content of RNA, DNA and protein. The results are used for the objective discrimination of different clinical states. It could be shown that the time of the maximal physiological activity reaches to the age of 20 years. Our results may be used as directions for the indication of the tonsilectomy.

Radioactive-labelled sodium does not penetrate via the round window in the inner ear of guinea-pigs. The findings reported confirm the mechanism assumed by Arslan for his "osmotic induction" surgery in the treatment of morbus Menière.

The aim of our investigations was to discriminate unspecific age-depending function of the tonsil. In an in-vitro system of tonsillar lymphocytes we could show, that there are differences in the DNA-, RNA- and Proteinbiosynthese between children and adults. The children organ is more active. It could be shown that the observed differences are only age depending and not influenced by the clinical state of the organ.
