Abstract
A search for narrow resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb⁻¹ collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are presented on the product of the resonance cross section, branching fraction into dijets, and acceptance, separately for decays into quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon pairs. The data exclude new particles predicted in the following models at the 95% confidence level: string resonances, with mass less than 2.50 TeV, excited quarks, with mass less than 1.58 TeV, and axigluons, colorons, and E6 diquarks, in specific mass intervals. This extends previously published limits on these models.

Abstract
Bose-Einstein correlations have been measured using samples of proton-proton collisions at 0.9 and 2.36 TeV center-of-mass energies, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of same-sign charged particles with small relative four-momentum. The size of the correlated particle emission region is seen to increase significantly with the particle multiplicity of the event.

Abstract
Charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions in proton-proton collisions at square root of s = 7 TeV are measured with the inner tracking system of the CMS detector at the LHC. The charged-hadron yield is obtained by counting the number of reconstructed hits, hit pairs, and fully reconstructed charged-particle tracks. The combination of the three methods gives a charged-particle multiplicity per unit of pseudorapidity dN(ch)/dη|(|η|<0.5) = 5.78 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.23(syst) for non-single-diffractive events, higher than predicted by commonly used models. The relative increase in charged-particle multiplicity from square root of s = 0.9 to 7 TeV is [66.1 ± 1.0(stat) ± 4.2(syst)]%. The mean transverse momentum is measured to be 0.545 ± 0.005(stat) ± 0.015(syst) GeV/c. The results are compared with similar measurements at lower energies.

Abstract
Spine-associated Rap-specific GTPase-activating protein (SPAR) is a postsynaptic protein that forms a complex with postsynaptic density (PSD)-95 and N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), and morphologically regulates dendritic spines. Mild intermittent hypoxia (IH, 16.0% O(2), 4 h/day for 4 weeks) is known to markedly enhance spatial learning and memory in postnatal developing mice. Here, we report that this effect is correlated with persistent increases in SPAR expression as well as long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus of IH-exposed mice. Furthermore, an infusion of SPAR antisense oligonucleotides into the dorsal hippocampus disrupted elevation of SPAR expression, preventing enhanced hippocampal LTP in IH-exposed developing mice and also reducing LTP in normoxic mice, without altering basal synaptic transmission. In SPAR antisense-treated mice, acquisition of the Morris water maze spatial learning task was impaired, as was memory retention in probe trails following training. This study provides the first evidence that SPAR is functionally required for synaptic plasticity and contributes to the IH-induced enhancement of spatial learning and memory in postnatal developing mice.

Abstract
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to study chitosan behaviors on different hydroxyapatite (HA) crystallographic planes at the atomic level. The interaction energy between the chitosan chain and different HA surfaces indicates that the interaction of the chitosan chain and HA(1 0 0) surfaces is stronger than that of HA(0 0 1) and HA(1 1 0) surfaces. The chemical interactions between chitosan and HA were analyzed through the concentration profile and pair correlation function of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in chitosan. The results show that there might be chemical interaction between nitrogen and calcium atoms, and hydrogen bonding between oxygen atoms and hydroxyl groups. This study provides useful information in understanding the interfacial interaction mechanism at the atomistic scale.

Abstract
Rice grain width and shape play a crucial role in determining grain quality and yield. The genetic basis of rice grain width was dissected into six additive quantitative trait loci (QTL) and 11 pairs of epistatic QTL using an F(7) recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a single cross between Asominori (japonica) and IR24 (indica). QTL by environment interactions were evaluated in four environments. Chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) harboring the six additive effect QTL were used to evaluate gene action across eight environments. A major, stable QTL, qGW-5, consistently decreased rice grain width in both the Asominori/IR24 RIL and CSSL populations with the genetic background Asominori. By investigating the distorted segregation of phenotypic values of rice grain width and genotypes of molecular markers in BC(4)F(2) and BC(4)F(3) populations, qGW-5 was dissected into a single recessive gene, gw-5, which controlled both grain width and length-width ratio. gw-5 was narrowed down to a 49.7-kb genomic region with high recombination frequencies on chromosome 5 using 6781 BC(4)F(2) individuals and 10 newly developed simple sequence repeat markers. Our results provide a basis for map-based cloning of the gw-5 gene and for marker-aided gene/QTL pyramiding in rice quality breeding.

Abstract
In this paper, we investigate vision-based navigation using the self-organizing hierarchical optimal subspace learning and inference framework (SHOSLIF) that incorporates states and a visual attention mechanism. With states to keep the history information and regarding the incoming video input as an observation vector, the vision-based navigation is formulated as an observation-driven Markov model (ODMM). The ODMM can be realized through recursive partitioning regression. A stochastic recursive partition tree (SRPT), which maps an preprocessed current input raw image and the previous state into the current state and the next control signal, is used for efficient recursive partitioning regression. The SRPT learns incrementally: each learning sample is learned or rejected "on-the-fly." The purposed scheme has been successfully applied to indoor navigation.

Abstract
Salvia Miltiorrhiza Bunge (SMB), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, has been alleged to support bone healing. However, the effects of the isolated major components of SMB on osseous cells and their corresponding effective doses are still unclear. In the present study, the effects of three components of SMB, including tanshinone IIA (Ts), salvianolic acid B (salB) and protocatechuic aldehyde (Pca), on mesenchymal bone marrow cells with the potential for osteoblastic differentiation were investigated. Various concentrations of Ts, salB and Pca were added to a rat bone marrow cell culture. The total metabolic activity and differentiation of bone marrow cells were evaluated by a metabolic assay and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, respectively. The morphology and number of cells was observed by phase contrast microscopy and fluorescent microscopy after propidium iodide staining, respectively. Ts suppressed the growth and differentiation of bone precursor cells. SalB exhibited a biphasic effect: the high concentration of 160 microg/mL significantly depressed the population of bone marrow cells, however, lower concentrations (3-80 microg/mL) enhanced the total metabolic activity and their ALP expression. Pca suppressed the bone marrow cell population in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, SalB has the potential to ameliorate bone healing by stimulating both the total metabolic activity and ALP activity of osteoblastic cells. Aqueous extracts, which preferably contain salB over Pca and are free of Ts therefore are recommended for bone formation.

Abstract
Chromosome segment substitution (CSS) lines have the potential for use in QTL fine mapping and map-based cloning. The standard t-test used in the idealized case that each CSS line has a single segment from the donor parent is not suitable for non-idealized CSS lines carrying several substituted segments from the donor parent. In this study, we present a likelihood ratio test based on stepwise regression (RSTEP-LRT) that can be used for QTL mapping in a population consisting of non-idealized CSS lines. Stepwise regression is used to select the most important segments for the trait of interest, and the likelihood ratio test is used to calculate the LOD score of each chromosome segment. This method is statistically equivalent to the standard t-test with idealized CSS lines. To further improve the power of QTL mapping, a method is proposed to decrease multicollinearity among markers (or chromosome segments). QTL mapping with an example CSS population in rice consisting of 65 non-idealized CSS lines and 82 chromosome segments indicated that a total of 18 segments on eight of the 12 rice chromosomes harboured QTLs affecting grain length under the LOD threshold of 2.5. Three major stable QTLs were detected in all eight environments. Some minor QTLs were not detected in all environments, but they could increase or decrease the grain length constantly. These minor genes are also useful in marker-assisted gene pyramiding.

Abstract
A new tool of wavelet entropy (WE) is applied to characterize the dynamical properties of EEGs for purpose of evaluating the depth of anesthesia (DOA). 31 cases are analysed with WE, and the result shows the WE measure for EEGs can distinguish awake and asleep state in anesthesia with a high accuracy of 95%. Compared with C(n) complexity, the WE demonstrates the same good performance, and needs shorter data length for analysis. These remind that WE is a potential quantifier of DOA.

Abstract
Early cortical auditory evoked potentials (AEP) from eleven volunteers undergoing an arterial oxygen desaturation procedure have been recorded and analysed. During the procedure the arterial oxygen saturation was decreased from 100% gradually down to 70%. Changes of the latency and amplitude of the AEP could be detected on the conscious subjects thus excluding any influences of anaesthesia. It was found that as oxygen desaturation went down the latency increased significantly and the amplitude also slightly increased but with no statistic significance. The latency parameters, especially Pb latency, are more sensitive to hypoxia than the amplitude parameters. The changes are similar to the effect of induction of anaesthesia.

Abstract
Heart rate variability and motion artifact are two major obstacles to the Photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal analysis, which is a very promising tool to derive useful information about the hemodynamics as well as autonomic nerve system. This paper suggests employing a truncation/extrapolation method on the PPG signal or its first order derivative to overcome the heart rate variability problem while extract a refined mean PPG pulse waveform. Meanwhile, the cross-correlation detection method is employed to remove the motion artifacts. Test results indicate that the proposed approach can effectively enhance the signal to noise ratio of PPG waveform and therefore verify the effectiveness of the proposed preprocessing scheme.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Selective oestrogen receptor (ER) modulators (SERMs) are of great value in the treatment of breast cancer and osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to characterize pharmacologically a new class of SERMs synthesized based on the core structure of raloxifene. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Competitive receptor binding and luciferase-based reporter methods were used to study the bioactivities of raloxifene analogues, followed by efficacy determination in breast cancer cell proliferation assay. ER antagonist effects were investigated in female rats by measuring uterine and mammary gland growth, using wet weight, BrdU incorporation and terminal end bud (TEB) as indicators. KEY RESULTS Five analogues, belonging to two different structural series and display higher binding affinities for ERalpha than ERbeta were functionally evaluated. One such analogue, Y134, exhibited potent antagonist activity at ERs in CV-1 cells cotransfected with plasmids containing ERalpha or ERbeta and oestrogen-response element-driven luciferase. The estimated IC(50) value was 0.52 nM for ERalpha and 2.94 nM for ERbeta, comparable to that of raloxifene. Little cytotoxicity was observed at Y134 concentrations below 10 microM. Y134 suppressed oestrogen-stimulated proliferation of ER-positive human breast cancer MCF-7 and T47D cells. At an identical dose, administered to ovariectomized rats, Y134 was more effective than raloxifene at arresting oestrogen-induced outgrowth of TEB and mammary gland DNA synthesis, but their inhibitory effects on the uterus were comparable. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Y134 is a potent ER antagonist with better mammary gland selectivity than raloxifene and shows potential for development as a new SERM for therapeutic use.

Abstract
AIMS To explore the contribution of islet autoimmunity and genetic mutations in Chinese patients initially thought to have Type 1B diabetes. METHODS A group of 33 Chinese patients with newly diagnosed Type 1B diabetes, were identified by the absence of autoantibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), IA-2, insulin, thyroid globulin or thyroid peroxidase, or high-risk HLA-DQ haplotypes. The cohort was further characterized by measurement of autoantibodies to carboxypeptidase H (CPH) and SOX13 using radioligand assays, and testing for genetic mutations associated with MODY3/MODY6 and mitochondrial diabetes. Mutations of HNF-1alpha (MODY3) and neuroD1/beta2 (MODY6) genes were screened using the single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) technique and sequencing. Mitochondrial DNA mutations were analysed with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). RESULTS Within the cohort, we found one patient with a novel mutation, R321H (CGC-->CAC) in exon 5 of the HNF-1alpha gene, one with ND1 mt3316 G-->A mutation in mitochondrial DNA, five with Ala45Thr polymorphisms in the neuroD1/beta2 gene, and two patients with autoantibodies to SOX13. CONCLUSIONS Some of the Chinese patients originally thought to have Type 1B diabetes do have other evidence of islet autoimmunity and genetic mutations involved in the underlying aetiology. This suggests that more rigorous screening for these conditions is needed before classifying subjects as having Type 1B diabetes.

Abstract
The aim of the present study is to demonstrate the newly formed tissue in calcium phosphate (Ca/P) ceramics after extra-osseous implantation by histological and immunohistochemistry (IHC) methods. Synthesis porous Ca/P ceramics without adding any growth factor and living cell were implanted in the dorsal muscle of dogs for 1 and 2 months. Undecalcified and decalcified sections were stained by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), and IHC, respectively. The histological results showed the beginning of osteogenesis and angiogenesis after being implanted for 1 month and the obvious new bone formation after being implanted for 2 months. IHC were conducted via the avidin-biotin peroxidase complex (ABC) method and the primary antibody was collagen type I. IHC results indicated that collagen type I was expressed within osteoblast-like cells and newly formed bone-like tissue in Ca/P ceramics after 1 month, and in the mineralized matrix of newly formed bone and osteoblasts, some osteocytes and some lacunae after 2 months. No cartilage and chondrocytes were observed in the histological and IHC-stained sections. Evidence of intramembranous osteogenesis was confirmed.

Abstract
The titanium surfaces containing calcium, phosphate ions and the carbonate apatite were characterized. The effect of surface chemistry on the initial rabbit osteoblast response on these surfaces was investigated. The cell count and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) specific activity assay were used for biochemical analyses. Scanning electron microscopy was used for morphology observation and in particular X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for surface chemistry characterization. The number of cells adhering to the apatite coating surface was the maximum, the number of cells on the surface containing calcium without phosphate ions was higher than that containing phosphate without calcium, and the number on the unmodified titanium surface was the least. The osteoblasts cultured on the apatite surface exhibited the highest ALP specific activity, next were the ones on the surface containing solely calcium, the lowest were on the unmodified titanium surface. On the substrate surfaces removed of adhered cells, the order of nitrogen amounts detected by XPS was consistent with ones of ALP specific activity and cell number, except for the unmodified titanium surface. For the substrate surfaces removed of adhered osteoblasts, XPS analysis showed that calcium and phosphorous amounts decreased during cell adhesion. After cell culture the Ca2p binding energy (BE) values for apatite coating and the surface containing solely calcium were similar to those of the two surfaces adsorbed bovine serum albumin (BSA). The P2p BE values for the surfaces containing phosphate ions, including the apatite coating and the surface containing solely phosphate ions, showed the same change. But after cell culture the decrease of the P2p BE value for the coating surface was larger than the one for the surface containing solely phosphate ions. Considering the bovine serum albumin adsorption on the same samples, these results indicated that calcium ions on titanium surfaces play a more important role than phosphate ions in initial interactions among culture medium, osteoblasts and titanium surfaces. On the apatite coating surface, calcium ions are active sites for osteoblast adhesion, while calcium and phosphate ions co-exist on titanium surfaces, the former promotes the osteoblast adhesion onto the phosphate sites on titanium surfaces. The cell adhesion was a complicated biological and chemical process relating to surface several elements similar to protein adsorption.
