Abstract
We evaluated the clinical role of the combination of positron emission tomography (PET) with F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and tumor marker CA125, in the detection of recurrence after initial therapy for epithelial ovarian cancer. The indication is the cases that cannot be confirmed the recurrence by conventional imaging modalities. Ninety patients underwent PET and computed tomography, including the measurement of specific tumor markers. FDG-PET confirmed recurrence in 46 patients (51%), and the recurrent site was confirmed by PET alone in 17 (37%). PET had high sensitivity for detecting both intraperitoneal and retroperitoneal metastases (93.9 and 92.9%, respectively). PET imaging was able to detect normal-sized metastases in the lymph nodes in 14 (50%) of the 28 patients with retroperitoneal metastasis. PET could show 87.5% positive rate of recurrent patients with asymptomatic rise of CA125 who had no sign of recurrence by conventional imaging methods. Of the 46 recurrent patients, 41 (89%) had specific elevated titers of CA125 at the first treatment. PET imaging was able to detect recurrence at relatively low titers (a median 68 U/mL) of CA125. In 8 (19.5%) of these 41 patients, recurrence with normal CA125 levels could be confirmed only by PET. The sensitivity of the combination of PET and CA125 was 97.8% with only one false-negative case. The combination of FDG-PET and CA125 titer is useful for the accurate detection of recurrence.

Abstract
Single-nucleotide polymorphism at −670 of Fas gene promoter (A/G) was examined in a total of 354 blood samples from normal healthy women and gynecological cancer patients. They consisted of 95 normal, 83 cervical, 108 endometrial, and 68 ovarian cancer cases. Eighty-three patients with cervical cancer had statistically higher frequency of GG genotype and G allele than 95 controls (P= 0.0353 and 0.0278, respectively). There was no significant difference in the genotype or allele prevalence between control subjects and endometrial or ovarian cancer patients. The Fas −670 GG genotype was associated with an increased risk for the development of cervical cancer (OR = 2.56, 95% CI = 1.08–6.10) compared with the AA genotype. The G allele also increased the risk of cervical cancer (OR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.05–2.43) compared with the A allele. Germ-line polymorphism of Fas gene promoter −670 may be associated with the risk of cervical cancer in a Japanese population.

Abstract
The enzymatic synthesis of fructose 1,6-diphosphate (FDP) from glucose and the enzymatic ATP regeneration were performed simultaneously in an ultrafiltration hollow-fiber reactor using both the purified enzymes and the crude cell extract of Bacillus stearothermophilus. The process consisted of the three-step synthetic reactions catalyzed by glucokinase, phosphoglucose isomerase and phosphofructokinase, and the ATP regeneration reaction catalyzed by acetate kinase. The experimental results of the yield and the recycle number agreed well with the theoretical predictions calculated using a computer program developed in our preceding study. This proved the validity of this computer program for predicting or analyzing the reactor performance.

Abstract
We investigated the minimum inhibitory concentrations of some fluoroquinolones for Mycoplasma genitalium and their bacteriological efficacy in the treatment of M. genitalium-positive nongonococcal urethritis. In vitro, levofloxacin was less active than gatifloxacin, tosufloxacin, and sparfloxacin. In vivo, the bacteriological efficacy of gatifloxacin was superior to that of levofloxacin or tosufloxacin.

Abstract
The transesterification activity of powder lipase prepared from the purified lipase of Rhizopus chinensis cells by freeze-drying was quite low compared with that of acetone-dried cells. Additives which could enhance the transesterification activity of the freeze-dried powder lipase were screened. The freeze-dried lipases prepared with certain fatty acid methylesters or certain types of surfactants exhibited high transesterification activity. It was shown that not only the solubility of the freeze-dried lipase in n-hexane but also the organic solvent-stability was enhanced when methyl stearate was added to the lipase solution at the freeze-drying step.

Abstract
Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) was analyzed in four patients with endometrial hyperplasia (EH) with atypia (two patients) and without atypia (two patients) and in five patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma (EAC) to clarify the clinicopathologic relationship between genetic alterations and hormone therapy. Each patient was initially administered high-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) as a uterine-sparing treatment. The five microsatellite markers used to analyze LOH were at chromosomal loci 8p22.1, 8p21, 8p21.3, 8p22, and 8p22. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded sections before, during, and after MPA therapy using laser capture microdissection. As a result, LOH was more frequently detected after MPA therapy (overall ratios were 16, 17, and 29% before, during, and after MPA therapy, respectively). LOH is more easily detected in EH loci than in EAC loci before MPA. For EAC, initial LOH detection on chromosome 8 may be related to an incomplete response to MPA, but negative LOH does not guarantee a favorable treatment outcome. For EH or atypical endometrial hyperplasia, it is unknown whether LOH alteration associated with MPA therapy is related to atypia of the disease.

Abstract
The advantages and disadvantages of oxidative permanent and acid-type semi-permanent hair colors are evident. The former provides a longlasting "permanent" color, while the latter imparts less damage to the hair. We developed a novel acid-type hair color technology that can allow an acid dye and a metal ion to form a complex inside the hair similar to the oxidative hair color. It is well known that acid dye diffuses into the hair and creates an ionic bond with the positively charged amino acid residues of hair protein. However, the dye can be extracted easily from the hair by daily shampooing due to the weakness of the bond. In order to strengthen this bond and to prevent the extraction of the dye by shampooing, an aluminum chloride ion was chosen as the metal ion component to form the dye-metal complex. A proper composition of penetration enhancers, benzyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol, was required to allow acid dyes to interact with the aluminum chloride ion after each component penetrates deeply into the hair to form a complex inside the hair. To provide color brightness and a color longevity effect to hair color, glycolic acid was also selected due to the observation that a weak acid with a small molecular weight would enhance those effects.

Abstract
A lipase gene (lip3) was cloned from the Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain LST-03 (which tolerates organic solvents) and expressed in Escherichia coli. The cloned sequence includes an ORF consisting of 945 nucleotides, encoding a protein of 315 amino acids (Lip3 lipase, 34.8 kDa). The predicted Lip3 lipase belongs to the class of serine hydrolases; the catalytic triad consists of the residues Ser-137, Asp-258, and His-286. The gene cloned in the present study does not encode the LST-03 lipase, a previously isolated solvent-stable lipase secreted by P. aeruginosa LST-03, because the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the Lip3 lipase differs from that of the LST-03 lipase. Although the effects of pH on the activity and stability of the Lip3 lipase, and the temperature optimum of the enzyme, were similar to those of the LST-03 lipase, the relative activity of the Lip3 lipase at lower temperatures (0-35 degrees C) was higher than that of the LST-03 lipase. In the absence of organic solvents, the half-life of the Lip3 lipase was similar to that of the LST-03 lipase. However, in the presence of most of the organic solvents tested in this study (the exceptions were ethylene glycol and glycerol), the stability of the Lip3 lipase was lower than that of the LST-03 lipase.

Abstract
We evoked changes in lower lip blood flow and systemic arterial blood pressure by electrically stimulating the central cut end of the lingual nerve in artificially ventilated, urethane-anesthetized, cervically vago-sympathectomized cats, rats, rabbits, and guinea pig. The systemic arterial blood pressure changes were species-dependent: increases in rat, consistent decreases in rabbit and guinea pig, and variable among individuals in cat. In cat and rabbit, lip blood flow increases, which occurred only ipsilaterally to the stimulated nerve and showed no statistically significant correlation with the systemic arterial blood pressure changes. In rat, the ipsilateral lip blood flow increase was markedly greater than the contralateral one, and although there was a significant correlation between each of them and the systemic arterial blood pressure changes, the ipsilateral increase presumably included an active vasodilatation. In guinea pig, lip blood flow decreased on both sides in proportion to the systemic arterial blood pressure reductions. Thus, species variability exists in the sympathetic-mediated systemic arterial blood pressure changes and parasympathetic-mediated lip blood flow responses themselves, and in the relationship between them.

Abstract
Disturbances in the reservoir function of the stomach may cause epigastric fullness or early satiety, which are the main symptoms in patients with dysmotility-like functional dyspepsia. Gastric adaptive relaxation is involved in the reservoir function of the proximal stomach. Ecabet sodium, synthesized from abietic acid, is widely used in Japan as an antiulcer drug. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ecabet on gastric adaptive relaxation in isolated guinea-pig stomachs. Changes in intragastric volume and pressure were recorded in the presence of atropine and guanethidine. Gastric adaptive relaxation was triggered by luminal distention. Ecabet at the dose of 20 mmol/l in solutions at two pHs (pH 3.0 and 7.4) significantly lowered the threshold pressure needed for such relaxation and increased intragastric volume, but lower doses had little or no effect. The results suggested that this antiulcer drug might improve symptoms in patients with dysmotility-like functional dyspepsia.
