Observation of diffractive J/psi production at the Fermilab Tevatron. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2001; 87:241802. Abstract
We report the first observation of diffractive J/psi(--> mu+mu-) production in pp collisions at root square[s] = 1.8 TeV. Diffractive events are identified by their rapidity gap signature. In a sample of events with two muons of transverse momentum p(mu)T>2 GeV/c within the pseudorapidity region /eta/ < 1.0, the ratio of diffractive to total J/psi production rates is found to be R(J/psi) = [1.45 +/- 0.25]%. The ratio R(J/psi)(x) is presented as a function of x-Bjorken. By combining it with our previously measured corresponding ratio R(jj)(x) for diffractive dijet production, we extract a value of 0.59 +/- 0.15 for the gluon fraction of the diffractive structure function of the proton.

Abstract
We present searches for quark-lepton compositeness and a heavy W' boson at high electron-neutrino transverse mass. We use approximately 110 pb(-1) of data collected in p p macro collisions at square root of [s] = 1.8 TeV by the CDF Collaboration during 1992-1995. The data are consistent with standard model expectations. Limits are set on the quark-lepton compositeness scale Lambda, the ratio of partial cross sections sigma(W'-->enu)/sigma(W-->enu), and the mass of a W' boson with standard model couplings. We exclude Lambda<2.81 TeV and a W' boson with mass below 754 GeV/c(2) at the 95% confidence level. Combining with our previously published limit obtained using the muon channel, we exclude a W' boson with mass below 786 GeV/c(2) at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
We report on a measurement of the mean charged-particle multiplicity of jets in dijet events with dijet masses in the range 80-630 GeV/c(2), produced at the Tevatron in pp collisions with square root (s) = 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The data are fit to perturbative-QCD calculations carried out in the framework of the modified leading log approximation and the hypothesis of local parton-hadron duality. The fit yields values for two parameters in that framework: the ratio of parton multiplicities in gluon and quark jets, r identical withN(g-jet)(partons)/N(q-jet)(partons) = 1.7+/-0.3, and the ratio of the number of charged hadrons to the number of partons in a jet, K(charged)(LPHD) identical with N(charged)(hadrons)/N(partons) = 0.57+/-0.11.

Abstract
We present results from a measurement of double diffraction dissociation in pp collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The production cross section for events with a central pseudorapidity gap of width Deltaeta(0)>3 (overlapping eta = 0) is found to be 4.43+/-0.02(stat)+/-1.18(syst) mb [ 3.42+/-0.01(stat)+/-1.09(syst) mb] at square root of (s) = 1800[630] GeV. Our results are compared with previous measurements and with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization.

Abstract
We report on a measurement of the mass dependence of the forward-backward charge asymmetry, A(FB), and production cross section d sigma/dM for e(+)e(-) pairs with mass M(ee)>40 GeV/c(2). The data sample consists of 108 pb(-1) of pp macro collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV taken by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992-1995. The measured asymmetry and d sigma/dM are compared with the predictions of the standard model and a model with an extra Z' gauge boson.

Abstract
We have measured the p(T) distribution of top quarks that are pair produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV using a sample of tt decays in which we observe a single high- p(T) charged lepton, a neutrino, and four or more jets. We use a likelihood technique that corrects for the experimental bias introduced due to event reconstruction and detector resolution effects. The observed distribution is consistent with the standard model prediction. We use these data to place limits on the production of high- p(T) top quarks suggested in some models of anomalous top quark pair production.

Abstract
The aim of the investigation was to establish if the finding of immunoserologic and pathohistologic parameters of the altered humoral immune response in patients with dermatopolymyositis was associated with the occurrence of more severe clinical patterns of the diseases followed by general symptoms and the affection of visceral organs. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative prediction of immunologic parameters of the disease were determined compared to the occurrence of certain systemic manifestations of the disease. Significant (80-100%) correlation of systemic manifestations with the altered immunoserologic and histopathologic parameters of the disease was confirmed, so that it could be assumed that pathologic humoral response had a significant role in the onset of systemic manifestations during dermatopolymyositis. Predictive value of indicators was of the utmost importance. If the increased values of immune complexes, vasculitis in the muscle and the other cited indicators of the altered humoral response were confirmed in a patient, more severe course of the disease could be expected, which was of practical value for the planning of therapeutic approach, estimation of the disease course and its prognosis.

Abstract
Dermatomyositis and polymyositis are the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies of autoimmune origin. Apart from muscle weakness, general symptoms such as the affection of visceral organs and altered indicators of humeral immunity occur in a minority of patients. The aim of the study was to establish whether the systemic manifestations of the disease, altered immunoserologic parameters and findings of muscle vasculitis occurred more frequently in patients with dermatomyositis or polymyositis. The frequency of clinic, serologic and histopathologic alterations in the groups of patients with dermatomyositis and polymyositis was determined. In order to determine the degree and importance of the frequency, the following parameters were calculated: the relative rations of frequencies and the importance of the difference in frequencies of particular alterations between the groups of patients. It was found that extramuscular manifestations of the disease such as arthritis, pulmonary, cardiac and renal changes, the increased activity of C3 and C4 complement components as well as vasculitis of muscle and skin tissue occurred more frequently in patients with dermatomyositis. This finding indicates that patients with DM, regardless of the degree of muscular affection, may have a more severe clinical course of the disease and a poor prognosis.

Abstract
We present the results of a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks in pp-->bb(phi)-->bbb final states with 91+/-7 pb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find no evidence of such a signal and the data are interpreted in the context of the neutral Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. With basic parameter choices for the supersymmetric scale and the stop-quark mixing, we derive 95% C.L. lower mass limits for neutral Higgs bosons for tan(beta) values in excess of 35.

Abstract
Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is an extremely rare cause of myocardial infarction. The prognosis and treatment of coronary artery dissection have not yet been defined. We report on a 42-year-old woman who was admitted to the emergency unit of a regional hospital with central chest pain and electrocardiographic signs of extensive acute anterior myocardial infarction (MI). She was treated with thrombolytics, yet her condition deteriorated rapidly, resulting in cardiogenic shock. An angiogram revealed dissection of the left main coronary artery that extended into the anterior descending (LAD) and circumflex arteries (LCX). At autopsy a recent anterolateral MI of the left ventricle was found. Dissection of the left coronary artery system was confirmed. Extension of the dissection may have been due to thrombolytic treatment.

Abstract
We have measured the ratio of prompt production rates of the charmonium states chi(c1) and chi(c2) in 110 pb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The photon from their decay into J/psi(gamma) is reconstructed through conversion into e+e- pairs. The energy resolution this technique provides makes the resolution of the two states possible. We find the ratio of production cross sections sigma(chi(c2))/sigma(chi(c1)) = 0.96+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.11(syst) for events with pT(J/psi) > 4.0 GeV/c, /eta(J/psi)/ < 0.6, and pT(gamma) > 1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract
We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R identical withB(t-->Wb)/B(t-->Wq) from p_p collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb(-1) of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-95 Tevatron run. We measure R = 0.94(+0.31)(-0.24)(stat+syst) or R>0.61 (0.56) at 90% (95)% C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element /V(tb)/ under the assumption of three generations and unitarity.

Abstract
Antioxidants protect DNA, proteins and lipids in the body from damage. These types of damages are a major contributor to aging and to degenerative diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune-system decline, brain dysfunction and cataracts. The effect of glycolipoprotein extract of Eisenia foetida (G-90) as an antioxidant was investigated in cultured human fibroblasts and epithelial cells. After treatment of the cells with H2O2 for 4 h, G-90 completely allows the cells to recover and stimulated their growth. When the cells were incubated with G-90 48 h before the treatment with H2O2, the oxidative damage of the cells did not occur. Thus, G-90 had an apparent protective effect against the toxicity of H2O2 and stimulated the growth of the cells. Ascorbic acid, a known antioxidant, did not allow the growth of the cells to recover after damage nor did it protect them, unless it was added simultaneously with H2O2. The antioxidative activity of G-90, together with its antibacterial and mitogen activities, could be useful in the study of G-90 as a wound-healing agent.

Abstract
The September COM: We reported the case of a 15 year old white girl with solitary brain cortical lesion clinically mimicking meningioma. Microscopic examination revealed histiocytic lesion with foamy and giant cells predominately of Touton type. Subsequent clinical examination did not reveal any similar lesion in the skin or in other location. Expression of S-100 protein in histiocytes is unusual finding, but has been reported recently in juvenile xanthogranulomas (JXG). The only specific ultra-structural finding differing JXG from histiocytic neoplasm of Langerhans' cells histiocytosis type seems to be Birbeck granules.

Abstract
A new stability criterion that can be used to assess the standing condition of a subject from center of pressure (CoP) measurements is presented. This criterion can be applied, for example, to control a standing prosthesis, which should allow a paraplegic subject to stand up, sit down and stand safely without using hands for support. Experiments conducted with able-bodied subjects enabled us to establish a relationship between its stability and the subject's CoP position. Four CoP stability zones were identified: high preference, low preference, undesirable and unstable zones. The high preference zone is defined as the area where the CoP is found 99% of the time during quiet standing. The area where the CoP is found during the remaining 1% of the time is called the low preference zone. The undesirable zone is defined as the CoP area where the subject is forced to change posture in order to maintain balance, and the unstable zone is defined as the CoP area in which the subject is forced to step forward, backward or sideways to maintain stability. A general model of the proposed four stability zones was derived, which can be used to compute stability zones a priori for any subject and thus allows one to assess the subject's stability condition from the CoP measurements.

Abstract
We have measured the polarization of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV, using data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992-1995. The polarization of promptly produced J/psi [psi(2S)] mesons is isolated from those produced in B-hadron decay, and measured over the kinematic range 4 [5.5]<P(T)<20 GeV/c and |y|<0.6. For P(T) greater than or approximately equal 12 GeV/c we do not observe significant polarization in the prompt component.
