Abstract
OBJECTIVE To elucidate the epidemic condition and molecular subtyping of ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime co-resistant Salmonella Indiana (S. Indiana) isolated from retail chicken carcasses in six provinces of China. METHODS A total of 2 647 Salmonella strains isolated from retail chicken carcasses collected from six provinces of China were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing. All Salmonella isolates co-resistant to ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime were further characterized by serotyping, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) producing strains screening and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) typing. RESULTS Among 2 629 Salmonella isolates tested, 227 (8.52%) isolates were co-resistant to ciprofloxacin and ceftazidime/cefotaxime (Beijing: 11.67% (99/874), Jilin: 8.20% (60/726), Guangdong: 1.39% (7/502), Jiangsu: 15.61% (42/260), Shaanxi: 8.56% (16/186), Inner Mongolia: 0 (0/81)), and 224 of them were identified as S. Indiana. 213 (95.10%) isolates of S. Indiana were ESBLs producing strains. All ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime co-resistant S. Indiana isolates developed a multi-drug resistant profile and 17.86% (40/224) of them were resistant to all antibiotics tested except carbapenems, and 50.89% (114/224) of them resistant to 9 antibiotics, additionally, 25.45% (57/224) of them showed multi-drug resistance to 8 antibiotics. All ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime co-resistant S. Indiana isolates were divided into 32 PFGE clusters and 150 PFGE patterns. Strains of S. Indiana from same or different sampling site and time seemed to either share the same PFGE patterns or be differential to each other in different regions. CONCLUSION The results indicated that chicken carcasses collected from parts of China were heavily contaminated by ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime co-resistant S. Indiana and could serve as an important reservoir of ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime co-resistant Salmonella. Molecular subtyping results indicated that cross contamination or common pollution source might be in these strains.

Abstract
Etheno-DNA adducts are generated by interaction of cellular DNA with exogenous environmental carcinogens and end products of lipid peroxidation. It has been determined that 1,N(6)-etheno-2'-deoxyadenosine (εdA) and 3,N(4)-etheno-2'-deoxycytidine (εdC) adducts formed in human white blood cells can be used to serve as biomarkers of genetic damage mediated by oxidative stress. In this study, we developed an ultrasensitive ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method used to detect and quantify εdA and dC adducts in human white blood cells. The percent recoveries of εdA and dC adducts were found to be 88.9% ± 2.8 and 95.7% ± 3.7, respectively. The detection limits were ∼ 1.45 fmol for εdA and ∼ 1.27 fmol for εdC in 20 μg of human white blood cell DNA samples, both εdA and εdC adducts could be detected using only ∼ 5 μg of DNA per sample. For validation of the method, 34 human blood cell DNA samples were assayed and the results revealed a significant difference (P < 0.01) between levels (fmol/μg DNA) of 0.82 ± 0.83 (standard deviation [SD]) (range: 0.15-3.11) for εdA, 3.28 ± 3.15 (SD) (range: 0.05-9.6) for εdC in benzene-exposed workers; and 0.04 ± 0.08 (SD) (range: 0.0-0.27) for εdA and 0.77 ± 1.02 (SD) (range: 0.10-4.11) for εdC in non-benzene-exposed workers. Our method shows a high sensitivity and specificity when applied to small amounts of human white blood cell DNA samples; background levels of εdA and εdC could be reproducibly detected. The ultrasensitive and simple detection method is thus suitable for applications in human biomonitoring and molecular epidemiology studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is the most severe form of peripheral arterial disease and a major unmet public health care need. This phase I clinical study was performed to assess the safety and preliminary efficacy of naked plasmid DNA (pUDK-HGF) expressing human hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). DESIGN Twenty-one patients with CLI were enrolled and randomly divided into four dose groups (4-16 mg) to receive local injection of pUDK-HGF into ischemic calf and/or thigh muscles twice on days 1 and 15. Safety, including adverse events and physiological parameters, and preliminary efficacy, including pain severity score (VAS), ulcer size, transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2), and ankle brachial index (ABI), were evaluated throughout a 3 month follow up period. RESULTS All doses of pUDK-HGF were well tolerated by the patients. None of the adverse effects was considered to be related to pUDK-HGF injection. Two significant clinical results were observed after pUDK-HGF administration. The mean VAS value of all patients decreased from 4.52 at baseline to 0.30 (p < .01), and pain had disappeared in 14 out of 17 evaluable patients by day 91. Two of four ulcers had completely healed, with the other two patients having more than 25% ulcer size reduction in the long axis diameter. Of five patients with gangrene, one gangrenous wound had healed completely and two patients showed marked size reduction by day 91. The mean hemodynamic parameters (ABI, TcPO2) were also improved. CONCLUSION Intramuscular injection of pUDK-HGF is safe, and may provide symptomatic relief for CLI patients. A larger, randomized, double blinded phase II trial will provide more information on safety and efficacy.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to isolate and culture bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from patients with high altitude polycythemia (HAPC) in order to provide a foundation for further exploration of their biological characteristics. MSCs were isolated and cultured from 10 HAPC patients and 10 healthy controls by using a density gradient centrifugation and an adherent screening method. The morphous of MSCs were observed under an inverted microscope, and its surface antigens were determined using flow cytometry. The growth of the MSCs was also detected to evaluate its proliferation. Bone marrow mononuclear cells were isolated from the bone marrow using a density gradient centrifugation, and they were cultured in vitro. The bone marrow MSCs were successfully isolated and cultured, which presented as fusiform and adherent cells. The MSCs in both groups expressed CD90,CD44,CD29,CD105, CD106, CD146, CD166,Stro—1 and CD13, but they did not express CD45, CD4,CD8,CD19,CD20,CD80,CD14,CD3,CD34 or HLA—DR (P>0.05). The bone marrow MSCs from HAPC patients had a higher proliferation than the bone marrow MSCs from the healthy controls (P<0.01). The bone marrow MSCs from HAPC patients can be effectively cultured in vitro.

Abstract
β-Lactamases and extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) producing pathogenic bacteria were widely studied previously in China, but were seldom focused on foodborne Salmonella. In this study, an investigation concerning β-lactamases and ESBLs producing Salmonella recovered from retail raw chickens was performed. Sixty of 699 foodborne Salmonella isolates were detected as β-lactamases and ESBLs-producing ones that covered 12 Salmonella serotypes and exhibited different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis genotypes. Forty-four of 60 β-lactamases and ESBLs-producing strains were simultaneously resistant to ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ceftiofur, ceftriaxone, and cefoxitin. The most commonly detected β-lactamases and ESBLs-encoding gene was bla(TEM-1) (n = 44), followed by bla(OXA-1) (n = 38), bla(CMY-2) (n = 29), bla(PSE-1-like) (n = 1), bla(CTX-M-3) (n = 16), and bla(CTX-M-15) (n = 1), respectively. Fourteen, 24, 21, and 1 isolates were detected simultaneously positive for 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the detected β-lactamases and ESBLs-encoding genes, respectively. A Salmonella strain simultaneously co-carrying bla(TEM-1), bla(OXA-1), bla(CMY-2), and bla(CTX-M-3) was first reported in the present study. Amino acid substitution of Trp244Cys/His247Leu was detected in PSE-1, Val218Asp in CMY-2, and Asp242Gly in CTX-M-15 enzymes, respectively. A difference was found among the amino acid sequences of the detected OXA-1, CMY-2, CTX-M, PSE-1, and TEM-1. The results demonstrated that β-lactamases and ESBLs were emerging and prevalent in foodborne Salmonella.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), which are composed of intracellular filamentous aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, are one of the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Because tau phosphorylation is regulated by phosphatases, abnormal metabolism of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) has been proposed to be a contributing factor to the disease process. RESULTS To determine the function of folic acid on tau phosphorylation, an in vitro model of human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) were exposed to folic acid (0-40 μmol/L) for 96 h, in the presence or absence of the phosphoesterase inhibitor okadaic acid (OA) (10 nmol/L) for 9 h. The data of western blot showed tau phosphorylation at the Ser396 site in OA-incubated SH-SY5Y cells was inhibited by folic acid in a concentration-dependent manner, with the folic acid concentration of 40 μmol/L providing maximal inhibition. Folic acid can downregulate tau protein phosphorylation by inhibiting the demethylation reactions of PP2A. High folic acid concentrations (20 and 40 μmol/L) increased SAM:SAH ratios and cell viability. CONCLUSION Therefore, we can speculate that folate deficiency may be a cause of PP2A deregulation, which can in turn lead to expression of the abnormal hyperphosphorylated form of tau.

Abstract
China is mobilizing the largest anthropogenic reactive nitrogen (Nr) in the world due to agricultural, industrial and urban development. However, the climate effects related to Nr in China remain largely unclear. Here we comprehensively estimate that the net climate effects of Nr are -100 ± 414 and 322 ± 163 Tg CO₂e on a GTP₂₀ and a GTP₁₀₀ basis, respectively. Agriculture contributes to warming at 187 ± 108 and 186 ± 56 Tg CO₂e on a 20-y and 100-y basis, respectively, dominated by long-lived nitrous oxide (N2O) from fertilized soils. On a 20-y basis, industry contributes to cooling at -287 ± 306 Tg CO₂e, largely owing to emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) altering tropospheric ozone, methane and aerosol concentrations. However, these effects are short-lived. The effect of industry converts to warming at 136 ± 107 Tg CO₂e on a 100-y basis, mainly as a result of the reduced carbon (C) sink from the NOx-induced ozone effect on plant damage. On balance, the warming effects of gaseous Nr are partly offset by the cooling effects of N-induced carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems. The large mitigation potentials through reductions in agricultural N₂O and industrial NOx will accompany by a certain mitigation pressure from limited N-induced C sequestration in the future.

Abstract
Oxytocin (OT) plays an important role in pain modulation and antinociception in the central nervous system. However, little is known about its peripheral effects. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of OT on the electrical properties of neurons in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and the underlying mechanisms. DRG neurons from adult rats were acutely dissociated and cultured. Intracellular Ca(2+) was determined by fluorescent microscopy using an indicator dye. The electrical properties of DRG neurons were tested by patch-clamp recording. The oxytocin receptor (OTR) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) on DRG neurons were assessed with immunofluorescence assays. OTR co-localized with nNOS in most of Isolectin B4 (IB4)-binding cultured DRG neurons in rats. OT decreased the excitability, increased the outward current, and evoked the membrane hyperpolarization in cultured DRG neurons. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), the donor of nitric oxide (NO), exerted similar effects as OT on the membrane potential of cultured DRG neurons. OT increased the production of NO in DRGs and cultured DRG neurons. Pre-treatment of the OTR antagonist atosiban or the selective nNOS inhibitor N-Propyl-l-arginine (NPLA) significantly attenuated the hyperpolarization effect evoked by OT. OT produced a concentration-dependent increase in intracellular Ca(2+) in DRG neurons that responds to capsaicin, which can be attenuated by atosiban, but not by NPLA. OT-evoked membrane hyperpolarization and increase of outward current were distinctly attenuated by glibenclamide, a blocker of ATP-sensitive K(+) (KATP) channel. OT might be an endogenous antinociceptive agent and the peripheral antinociceptive effects of OT are mediated by activation of the Ca(2+)/nNOS/NO/KATP pathway in DRG neurons.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxytocin plays an analgesic role in modulation of nociception and pain. Most work to date has focused on the central mechanisms of oxytocin analgesia, but little is known about whether peripheral mechanisms are also involved. METHODS The mesenteric afferent discharge was recorded in vitro. The expressions of oxytocin receptor (OTR) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus (LMMP) was identified by immunofluorescence. KEY RESULTS Oxytocin per se had no effect on the jejunal mesenteric afferent discharge, however, it markedly attenuated the bradykinin- or distention-evoked increase of mesenteric afferent discharge, which was mimiced by the nitric oxide (NO) donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP). Pretreatment of either NOS inhibitor L-NAME or NPLA largely reduced the inhibitory effect of oxytocin on bradykinin-evoked mesenteric afferent discharge. Such effect, to a large extent, was also alleviated by N-and P-type voltage-dependent calcium channel antagonists or KATP blocker glibenclamide. In addition, immunofluorescence studies show strong colocalization of OTR with nNOS in LMMP of the rat jejunum. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES Oxytocin down-regulates the mesenteric afferent sensitivity through nNOS-NO-KATP pathway. Our findings may reveal a new peripheral mechanism for oxytocin analgesia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine Campylobacter contamination level and antimicrobial resistance patterns from chicken carcasses in supermarkets and farmer's markets of 9 districts in Beijing. METHODS From August 2012 to July 2013, whole chicken carcasses (n = 240) were collected from 27 supermarkets and 18 farmer's markets of nine districts in Beijing. The level of Campylobacter contamination was enumerated by plate counting method using the modified Karmali and modified Preston agar. Presumptive Campylobacter isolates were identified and characterized by gram stain, agglumination test and a multiplex PCR method. The level of Campylobacter contamination was calculated following the USDA/FSIS Campylobacter enumeration method. Selected 151 Campylobacter isolates were further characterized by minimal inhibitory concentrations(MICs) of eight antimicrobials. RESULTS A total of 26.3% (63/240) of the retail whole chicken carcasses were contaminated by Campylobacter and 151 Campylobacter isolates were recovered, including 85 Campylobacter jejuni isolates and 66 Campylobacter coli isolates. The P25, P50, P75 of Campylobacter contamination concentration were 7.5, 45.0 and 350.0 CFU/g, respectively. The antimicrobial resistance rate of C. jejuni and C. coli were as the following: azithromycin(AZI, 13% (11/85), 82% (54/85)), chloramphenicol (CHL, 33% (28/85), 42% (28/85)), ciprofloxacin (CIP, 95% (81/85), 100% (85/85)), doxycycline (DOX, 38% (32/85), 80% (53/85)), erythromycin (ERY, 12% (10/85), 82% (54/85)), gentamicin (GEN, 25% (21/85), 68% (45/85)), tetracycline (TET, 67% (57/85), 73% (62/85)), all isolates were susceptible to meropenem (MEP). The multi-drug resistance ratio of C. jejuni (55% (47/85) )was significantly lower than that (86% (57/66) )of C. coli (χ(2) = 16.70, P < 0.01). Among 151 Campylobacter isolates, 21 antimicrobial resistance patterns were identified, including 20 patterns among C. jejuni isolates and 10 patterns among C.coli isolates. Among C.jejuni isolates, CIP-DOX-TET was dominant (22% (19/85)), followed by CIP-TET (14% (12/85)), CHL-CIP-TET(9% (8/85)) and CHL-CIP-GEN (7% (6/85)). Among C.coli isolates,AZI-CHL-CIP-DOX-ERY-GEN-TET (35% (23/66)) was the dominant, followed by AZI-CIP-DOX-ERY-GEN-TET (21% (14/66) )and AZI-CIP-DOX-ERY-TET(15% (10/66)). CONCLUSION Our findings showed a high prevalence and concentration of Campylobacter contamination in retail chicken carcasses of nine districts in Beijing, especially the on-site slaughtered chicken from the farmer's markets. The resistance levels of these recovered Campylobacter isolates were serious.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The evpP gene in fish pathogen Edwardsiella tarda, coding the T6SS secretory protein EvpP and carrying an evpA-evpO independent promoter region, was crucial for host cell invasion. The transcription of evpP was positively regulated by either the two-component system EsrA-EsrB or iron concentration, and its overexpression was known to enhance the invasion ability in our previous study. This work demonstrated that the H-NS protein, a pleiotropic regulator of gene expression, was a new transcriptional modulator of evpP gene. The results showed that in vivo the transcriptional level of evpP was downregulated by H-NS and in vitro this global regulator interacted directly with evpP promoter region. Moreover, DNase I footprinting experiments mapping the interaction regions of H-NS and evpP revealed that this global regulator bound to evpP promoter and neighbouring areas at multiple sites. We provided a new insight into evpP regulation network and demonstrated the repression of H-NS to the transcription of evpP gene. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Recently, the devastating fish disease edwardsiellosis caused by Edwardsiella tarda has been widely concerned. The xenogeneic silencing of the classic regulator H-NS to the T6SS secretory protein EvpP, which played an important role in the virulence of Edw. tarda, was firstly reported in this study. It raised a better understanding of the virulence regulation of EvpP and provided more information about the complex infection mechanism of this pathogen. Our findings would contribute to the development of live attenuated vaccines against edwardsiellosis thus reducing the economic losses caused by this bacterium.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the existence and characteristics of Salmonella enterica in dried milk-related infant foods. Twenty-four (3.4%) of 705 samples, including 5 (2.0%) of 246 powdered infant formula, 18 (4.0%) of 445 infant rice cereal, and 1 (7.1%) of 14 other infant foods, were positive for Salmonella. Fifteen serotypes were identified in 40 Salmonella isolates; Salmonella Duesseldorf (15.0%) and Salmonella Indiana (15.0%) were more frequently detected than other serotypes. Resistance to chloramphenicol (82.5%) was most common, followed by tetracycline (57.5%), ceftiofur (52.5%), kanamycin (52.5%), streptomycin (50.0%), gentamycin (45.0%), nalidixic acid (35.0%), ceftriaxone (32.5%), ciprofloxacin (25.0%), amikacin (20.0%), and cefoxitin (15.0%). Twenty-eight (70.0%) isolates were resistant to ≥ 8 antimicrobials, with 5 (12.5%) being resistant to 14 antimicrobials. Amino acid substitutions in gyrase A (GyrA) were most frequently detected as Ser83Arg/Asp87Glu and in p53-associated Parkin-like cytoplasmic protein (ParC), they were all Ser80Arg; the quinolone resistance gene qnrS (47.5%) was commonly detected as well as aminoglycoside acetyltransferase [aac(6')-Ib; 25.0%], qnrA (17.5%), and qnrB (15.0%) genes. Thirty distinct pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns were identified among 40 isolates; no identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern was detected among Salmonella isolates with the same serovar that was recovered in 2010 and 2012. Our results suggest that dried milk-related infant foods could be contaminated with Salmonella and highlight that the dangers to infant health should not be neglected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of cefotaxime in co-resistant Escherichia coli isolates in retail chicken samples and provide or the risk assessment and evaluation of new control measures of multi-drug i isolates in retail chicken products. METHODS Whole chicken carcasses re collected from Shanxi (n = 91), Guangdong (n = 63) and Inner 53) from April to December in 2011, cefotaxime and ciprofloxacin co- li isolates were recovered and subjected to phylogenetic group typing and usceptibility testing. All isolates were further characterized by screening for genes, quinolone resistance determinants by PCR and followed by DNA sis. RESULTS Cefotaxime and ciprofloxacin co-resistant E. coli isolates in 35.7% (73/207) of retail chicken carcasses. E. coli isolates of oup A were dominant (61.6%, 45/73) and all the isolates showed tant profiles. The dominant resistant profiles were AMP-CAZ-CTX-CIP- (n =34) and AMP-CAZ-CTX-CIP-CHL-GEN-SXT-TET (n = 24). Point and ciprofloxac mutations in quinolone resistance determination, regions of topoisomerases were identified in all the isolates and most of the isolates accumulated three (n = 56) or four (n = 12) point mutations. Plasmid mediated quinolone resistant determinants were identified in 50 isolates, including oqxAB (n = 48) , aac(6')-Ib-cr (n = 5) , qnrS1 (n = 5) and qnrS2 (n = 3). Six subtypes of blaCTX-M were identified in 72 E. coli isolates and blaCTX-M-55 (n = 62) was dominant. CONCLUSION Retail chicken could serve as an important reservoir of cefotaxime and ciprofloxacin co-resistant E. coli isolates.

Abstract
Urban ecosystems are unique in the sense that human activities are the major drivers of biogeochemical processes. Along with the demographic movement into cities, nutrients flow towards the urban zone (nutrient urbanization), causing the degradation of environmental quality and ecosystem health. In this paper, we summarize the characteristics of nutrient cycling within the urban ecosystem compared to natural ecosystems. The dynamic process of nutrient urbanization is then explored taking Xiamen city, China, as an example to examine the influence of rapid urbanization on food sourced nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism. Subsequently, the concept of a nutrient footprint and calculation method is introduced from a lifecycle perspective. Finally, we propose three system approaches to mend the broken biogeochemical cycling. Our study will contribute to a holistic solution which achieves synergies between environmental quality and food security, by integrating technologies for nutrient recovery and waste reduction.

Abstract
The growth of certain methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates could be inhibited by NaCl higher than 2.5%. The objective of this study was to develop an enrichment method to recover NaCl-susceptible MRSA isolates from meat samples. The growth of 12 MRSA and 10 non-MRSA strains was measured in Mueller-Hinton (MH) broth supplemented with 2.5%, 4%, 6.5%, and 7.5% NaCl. Selective agents, including aztreonam, polymyxin B, NaCl, nalidixic acid, and NaN3, were determined for their inhibitory effect to MRSA and non-MRSA strains in MH broth. Based on these data, a two-step enrichment method was developed to recover both NaCl-susceptible and -resistant MRSA isolates in meat products. Comparing to the enrichment method that only used MH broth supplemented with 6.5% NaCl, five additional NaCl-susceptible MRSA isolates were recovered from 92 retail ground pork samples by this newly developed two-step enrichment method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that considers NaCl-susceptible MRSA recovery from ground pork samples. The application of this new enrichment method might expand the diversity of MRSA isolates recovered from various samples.

Abstract
We evaluated the associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotypes of the genes encoding a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 33 (ADAM33), cluster of differentiation 14 (CD14), and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and the susceptibility of developing specific adult phenotypes of bronchial asthma in a Chinese Uygur population. Five SNPs of ADAM33 (T1, T2, and V4), 3 SNPs of CD14 (-1359G/T, -1145G/A, and -159T/C), and 2 SNPs of TLR4 (-896A/G and -1196C/T) were genotyped in a Chinese Uygur sample of 126 adult asthmatic patients and 126 control subjects. Gene polymorphisms were detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The genotyping results were confirmed in a random subgroup of our samples using direct DNA sequencing. The allele frequencies of ADAM33 T1 (TC), T2 (AG), and V4 (GG) were significantly higher in patients than in controls (P<0.05). The genotypes T1 (TC+CC), T2 (AG+AA), and V4 (CG+GG) significantly increased the risk of asthma. After adjusting for confounding factors, these associations were stronger and remained significant. The T1 (TC) and V4 (GG) genotypes in the ADAM33 gene were associated with significantly decreased FEV1 levels in patients with asthma. The haplotype frequencies of Hap3 (CAC) and Hap4 (CAG) were significantly higher in patients than in controls (P<0.05). Our results suggest that polymorphisms T1, T2, and V4 in ADAM33 may contribute to the susceptibility to asthma. Specific haplotypes of ADAM33 may contribute to a higher susceptibility to asthma in the Chinese Uygur population.

Abstract
Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL)-producing Salmonella enterica have been reported worldwide. However, research on foodborne ESBL-producing Salmonella has been rarely conducted. One hundred and thirty eight ceftriaxone or/and cefoperazone-resistant Salmonella strains recovered from retail foods in Shaanxi and Henan Province, China, were screened for ESBL. The ESBL-producing strains were further characterized for antimicrobial resistance, pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) profiles, and the presence of blaTEM, blaSHV, blaOXA, blaCTX-M, and blaPSE. The transferability of ESBL encoding genes to a susceptible Escherichia coli strain was also investigated. Thirty (21.7%) isolates were identified as ESBL positive and belonged to S. enterica serovars Indiana, Shubra, Typhimurium, and Enteritidis. S. Indiana and S. Shubra isolates were firstly identified in ESBL-producing strains. Great genetic diversity was seen among these ESBL-producing strains. Nucleotide sequence analysis revealed that blaTEM-1B was the only ESBL-encoding gene among the genes tested and was detected in 26 of 30 strains and was carried in the conjugative plasmids. The blaTEM-1B gene was transferable through conjugation at rates ranging from 4.71 × 10(-7) to 7.55 × 10(-6) transconjugant per recipient cell. This study provides the evidence of foodborne ESBL-producing Salmonella, and the transferability of plasmid harboring ESBL-encoding genes could possibly contribute to the dissemination of ESBL.
