Abstract
Drug resistance is one of the major obstacles limiting the success of cancer chemotherapy. Biological mechanisms contributing to drug resistance may be present de novo and related to inherent features or may be raised after exposure to anticancer drugs. In recent years, both clinical observations and experimental studies suggested that steroid hormones and their receptors might also affect the therapeutic efficacy of antineoplastic drugs. Estrogens and estrogen receptors (ER) are well-known for their critical roles in the development and progression of breast tumors. It has long been known that breast tumors expressing ERα protein (ERα+) behave in a fundamentally different fashion than ERα-negative (ERα-) tumors with regard to their responses to hormonal therapy. Data obtained from both laboratory and clinical investigations suggested that some chemotherapeutic agents are clearly less effective in ERα+ tumors than ERα- tumors, although the mechanisms of ERα-mediated chemoresistance are not entirely clear. Moreover, recent studies from our laboratory and others demonstrated that the combination of antiestrogenic agents with chemotherapeutic drugs is of significant therapeutic benefit in ERα+ breast cancer over chemotherapy alone. In addition, the ERα-derived peptides, microRNAs specifically targeting ERα, as well as agents targeting estrogen-related receptors (ERRs) may hold promise to sensitize ERα+ breast tumors to chemotherapy. Considering that ERs are expressed in ˜ 65% of human breast cancer, the ERα-mediated chemoresistance has become a big challenge for clinical treatment. The hope to overcome this drug resistance relies on further clarification of specific pathways or molecules contributing to the resistance. More exhaustive and systematic studies are essential to reach deeper understandings on the underlying mechanisms and to develop novel approaches to sensitize ERα+ breast tumors to chemotherapy.

Abstract
We report a hydroelasticity-based microfluidic oscillator that converts otherwise steady laminar flow to oscillatory flow. It incorporates an elastic diaphragm to enhance nonlinearity of the flow. Negative differential flow resistance is observed. High-frequency oscillatory flow is produced passively through interactions among hydrodynamic, elastic and inertial forces, without resorting to external actuators and control equipment. Driven by fluid flow and pressure, this device can operate in either steady laminar flow or oscillatory flow states, or work as a valve. Its applications for flow control and operation, and mixing enhancement are demonstrated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In vitro islet expansion has recently drawn interest for its potential application in diabetes therapy, while how islet cells adapt to in vitro circumstances is not quite clear. AIM Proteomics changes of cultivated islet cells under different conditions were examined in this study. MATERIAL/SUBJECTS AND METHODS A comparative proteomics study was performed on fresh isolated islet cells, cultured cells and in vitro proliferating islet cells stimulated by basic fibroblast growth factor via electrophoresis and liquid chromatography in tandem with mass spectrometry. RESULTS In total, 1897 proteins were identified in this study. Hierarchical analysis revealed substantial changes in the proteome during cultivation but relatively less difference between different culture conditions. Over 100 proteins showed significantly different expression levels between groups, most of which are involved in metabolism or cell process pathways. Overall, the detected proteins were involved in 152 known pathways. Furthermore, in-depth investigation suggested that some proteins, such as extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases and Rac, might play key roles in the proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation of in vitro cultured islet cells. CONCLUSION We established comparative proteome references of fresh and cultured islet cells, which could provide useful information for future islet transplantation strategy.

Abstract
We investigate the electron transport between a scanning tunneling microscope tip and Si(100)-2 × 1 surfaces with four distinct configurations by performing calculations using density functional theory and the nonequilibrium Green's function method. Interestingly, we find that the conducting mechanism is altered when the tip-surface distance varies from large to small. At a distance larger than the critical value of 4.06 Å, the conductance is increased with a reduction in distance owing to the π state arising from the silicon dimers immediately under the tip; this in turn plays a key role in facilitating a large transmission probability. In contrast, when the tip is closer to the substrate, the conductance is substantially decreased because the π state is suppressed by the interaction with the tip, and its contribution in the tunneling channels is considerably reduced.

Abstract
We studied the insulator-metal transition (IMT) in single-domain, single crystalline vanadium dioxide (VO(2)) microbeams with infrared microspectroscopy. The unique nature of such samples allowed us to probe the intrinsic behavior of both insulating and metallic phases in the close vicinity of IMT, and investigate the IMT driven by either strain or temperature independently. We found that the VO(2) insulating band gap narrows rapidly upon heating, and the infrared response undergoes an abrupt transition at both strain- and temperature-induced IMT. The results are consistent with recent studies attributing the opening of VO(2) insulating band gap to a correlation-assisted Peierls transition.

Abstract
Oral Diseases (2011) 17, 252-257 Heme oxygenase (HO) system catabolizes heme into three products: carbon monoxide (CO), biliverdin/bilirubin and free iron, which consists of three forms identified to date: the oxidative stress-inducible protein HO-1 and the constitutive isozymes HO-2 and HO-3. HO has been involved in many physiological and pathophysiological processes, ranging from Alzheimer's disease to cancer. The interest in HO system by scientists and clinicians involved with the oral and maxillofacial region is fairly recent, and few papers currently cited on HO relate to diseases in this anatomical area. This review will focus on the current understanding of the physiological significance of HO-1 induction and its possible roles in the oral diseases studied to date. The implications for possible therapeutic manipulation of HO are also discussed.

Abstract
Single-crystal micro- and nanomaterials often exhibit higher yield strength than their bulk counterparts. This enhancement is widely recognized in structural materials but is rarely exploited to probe fundamental physics of electronic materials. Vanadium dioxide exhibits coupled electronic and structural phase transitions that involve different structures existing at different strain states. Full understanding of the driving mechanism of these coupled transitions necessitates concurrent structural and electrical measurements over a wide phase space. Taking advantages of the superior mechanical property of micro/nanocrystals of VO(2), we map and explore its stress-temperature phase diagram over a phase space that is more than an order of magnitude broader than previously attained. New structural and electronic aspects were observed crossing phase boundaries at high-strain states. Our work shows that the actively tuning strain in micro/nanoscale electronic materials provides an effective route to investigate their fundamental properties beyond what can be accessed in their bulk counterpart.

Abstract
Purpose The DBA/2J (D2) mouse carries mutations in two of its genes, Tyrp1 and Gpnmb. These alterations result in the development of an immune response in the iris, leading to iris atrophy and pigment dispersion. The development of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in this model of glaucoma is considered to be a significant factor leading to the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Changes in gene expression in the retina have already been correlated with the appearance of elevated IOP in the D2 mouse. The purpose of the present study was to determine if any changes in gene expression occur prior to the development of IOP. Methods The IOP was measured monthly using a rebound tonometer in D2 and age-matched C57/BL6 (B6) mice (normal controls). D2 animals with normal IOP at 2 and 4 M were used. In addition, mice at the age of 6–7 M were included to look for any trends in gene expression that might develop during the progression of the disease. Separate RNA samples were prepared from each of three individual retinas for each age, and gene expression profiles were determined with the aid of mouse oligonucleotide arrays (Agilent). A subset of genes was examined with the aid of real-time PCR. Immunocytochemistry was used to visualize changes in the retina for some of the gene-products. Results Four hundred and thirteen oligonucleotide probes were differentially expressed in the retinas of 4 M versus 2 M old D2 mice. The most significantly up-regulated genes (181) were associated with immune responses including interferon signaling, the complement system and the antigen presentation pathway, whereas the down-regulated genes (232) were linked to pathways related to cell death and known neurological diseases/disorders. These particular changes were not revealed in the age-matched B6 mice. By 6 M, when IOP started to increase in many of the D2 mice, more robust changes of these same genes were observed. Changes in the levels of selected genes, representative of different functions/pathways, were validated with RT-PCR, and changes in glial responses were visualized in the retina with immunocytochemistry. Conclusions The results showed that the expression of genes related to the immune response and acute stress were altered independently of the development of elevated IOP, and indicated early involvement of the immune system in the onset of the disease. The later development of elevated IOP, observed in this animal model, was coincident with continued changes in expression of genes observed at earlier time points. Further studies are warranted to identify the roles of specific genes identified here with respect to the death of the RGCs.

Abstract
We report on measurements of Seebeck effect in single-crystal VO(2) microbeams across their metal-insulator phase transition. One-dimensionally aligned metal-insulator domain walls were reversibly created and eliminated along single VO(2) beams by varying temperature, which allows for accurate extraction of the net contribution to the Seebeck effect from these domain walls. We observed significantly lower Seebeck coefficient in the metal-insulator coexisting regime than predicted by a linear combination of contributions from the insulator and metal domains. This indicates that the net contribution of the domain walls has an opposite sign from that of the insulator and metal phases separately. Possible origins that may be responsible for this unexpected effect were discussed in the context of complications in this correlated electron material.

Abstract
Correlated electron materials can undergo a variety of phase transitions, including superconductivity, the metal-insulator transition and colossal magnetoresistance. Moreover, multiple physical phases or domains with dimensions of nanometres to micrometres can coexist in these materials at temperatures where a pure phase is expected. Making use of the properties of correlated electron materials in device applications will require the ability to control domain structures and phase transitions in these materials. Lattice strain has been shown to cause the coexistence of metallic and insulating phases in the Mott insulator VO(2). Here, we show that we can nucleate and manipulate ordered arrays of metallic and insulating domains along single-crystal beams of VO(2) by continuously tuning the strain over a wide range of values. The Mott transition between a low-temperature insulating phase and a high-temperature metallic phase usually occurs at 341 K in VO(2), but the active control of strain allows us to reduce this transition temperature to room temperature. In addition to device applications, the ability to control the phase structure of VO(2) with strain could lead to a deeper understanding of the correlated electron materials in general.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the mid-1980s, confidential unit exclusion (CUE) was implemented to permit donors unwilling to admit risk factors in screening to exclude their donation from transfusion. With changes in donor behaviour, epidemiology of disease and improvements in testing, many blood establishments have stopped using it. We evaluated its benefit in Canada, and reported its utility in predicting transmissible-disease (TD) and high-risk behaviour. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS TD-positive donations and incident cases between 2004 and 2008 were analyzed in CUE-safe and CUE-unsafe designated donations. An anonymous survey of 40,000 donors asked about CUE use and risk factors. RESULTS There were 7104 (0.15%) donations designated CUE-unsafe of 4,775,044 donations. Most TD-positive donations were designated CUE-safe (1023/1030, 99.32%) with only seven (0.68%) designated CUE-unsafe. Of 95 incident cases, all were designated CUE-safe including three NAT-yield cases (1 HIV and 2 HCV). In the survey, some donors found the CUE difficult to understand [10.5% (first-time), 3.2% (repeat)], only half thought that the blood would still be tested [48.9% (first-time), 45.9% (repeat)], and about a fifth believed that collection site staff could see their designation. No survey respondents who used the CUE admitted to risk behaviour, but about 1% of donors who designated CUE-safe had high-risk behaviours. CONCLUSION The data do not provide any indication of a safety benefit from CUE, but CUE use results in a small but constant loss of apparently safe donations.

Abstract
A headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied for the qualitative or semiquantitative characterization of brandy volatiles. SPME variables (SPME fiber, extraction temperature and time, and ethanol concentration) were optimized. A total of 144 compounds were from the brandies' volatiles, tentatively identified or identified by comparing mass spectra and retention indices of the standards or from literature. Of these, 57 are common to 11 brandies. They were mainly represented by esters and alcohols, such as 2-methyl propanol, 3-methyl butanol, 1-hexanol, ethyl octanoate, and ethyl decanoate, which were quantitatively determined. Chromatographic peaks were integrated using selective ion method (SIM) and the semiquantitative data analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) to study relationships between volatile composition and brandy. Eleven brandies were differentiated into 3 groups: 1 for Hennessy VSOP and XO samples, 1 for Changyu PEGASE VSOP and XO-1, 2, 3 samples, and the other for Changyu PEGASE brandy and VO, Taro brandy, Baiyang River brandy, and Wealth XO samples. The classification of groups is consistent with the brandy samples by variety and grade.
