Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of lesion length on in-stent restenosis (ISR) of vertebral artery (VA) origin stenting. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the medical and radiological records of patients receiving VA origin stenting from March 1999 to June 2005. They were subdivided according to lesion length. ISR was defined as >50% diameter narrowing in stent. RESULTS Eighty symptomatic patients (64 male, mean age 72 years) with 90 lesions treated with balloon expandable tubular coronary stents were enrolled. There were 34 patients with 38 short lesions (length<or=5 mm, group 1), 37 patients with 42 medium lesions (length>5 mm, <10 mm, group 2) and 9 patients with 10 long lesions (length>or=10 mm, group 3). Eighty seven bare-metal stents and 3 drug-eluting stents were implanted. Repeat angiography was done in 40 lesions (44%) at 11.7+/-9.6 months. The ISR rate in group 1, 2, 3 is 21%, 29%, and 50% (p=0.486). Multivariable Cox regression analysis showed lesion length was the only significant independent predictor of ISR (hazard ratio: 1.19, p=0.039). CONCLUSION ISR of VA origin stenting is common. Lesion length is an important predictor of ISR in VA origin stenting.

Abstract
The Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O (x = 0, 0.16, and 0.25) thin films were grown on fused quartz substrates by reactive magnetron cosputtering. X-ray-diffraction measurement revealed that all the films were single phase and had wurtzite structure with c-axis orientation. As Mn concentration increased in the Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O films, the c-axis lattice constant and band-gap energy increased gradually. In Raman-scattering studies, an additional Mn-related vibration mode appeared at 520 cm(-1). E(2H) phonon line of Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O alloy was broadened asymmetrically and redshifted as a result of microscopic structural disorder induced by Mn(2+) random substitution. The Zn(0.84)Mn(0.16)O film exhibited a ferromagnetic characteristic with a Curie temperature of approximately 62 K. However, with increasing Mn concentration to 25 at. %, ferromagnetism disappeared due to the enhanced antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions between neighboring Mn(2+) ions.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to report our experience of totally implantable central venous access devices (TICVAD) implantation using two techniques and attempt to define the better technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS From January 1998 to September 2003, 1131 patients were reviewed and divided into two groups with implantation by cephalic vein cut-down (group A) done by general surgeons and subclavian vein puncture with the Seldinger technique (group B) done by vascular surgeons. The operative time, early and late complications of these two groups were compared. Data were analysed by Student's t-test. RESULTS The average of operative time was 43 min in group A (35-70 min) and 40 min in group B (35-60 min) (P>0.05). No post-operative pneumothorax, hemothorax and fragmentation occurred in group A; the incidence of peri-operative complication was higher in group B. The overall and early complications of group A were significantly lower than that of group B (P<0.0001). CONCLUSION This retrospective study showed that the cephalic vein cut-down approach for TICVAD placement avoided the risks of pneumothorax, hemothorax and catheter fragmentation.

Abstract
AIM Hepatic failure can develop after curative hepatectomy in patients with a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) invading the portal vein, because of cirrhosis and excessive tissue loss. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for hepatic failure in such patients. METHOD Forty patients with an HCC invading the portal vein underwent curative hepatectomy from January 1995 to June 2003. Eight patients developed hepatic failure and died within 3 months. Possible risk factors for this were analysed using univariate and multivariate regression. These included the liver function index, surgical blood loss, tumour pattern, portal hypertension, estimated residual liver volume measured by computed tomography (ERLV(CT)) and estimated residual liver volume using the indocyanine green (ICG) retention rate at 15 min (ERLV(ICG15)). RESULTS The ERLV(CT) smaller than the ERLV(ICG15) and presence of portal hypertension were independent risk factors for post-hepatectomy hepatic failure. CONCLUSION Having portal vein invasion HCC with portal hypertension or an ERLV(CT) less than an ERLV(ICG15) are significant predictors of post-hepatectomy hepatic failure. These factors are important considerations for patients with portal vein invasion HCC who could undergo curative hepatic resection.

Abstract
Self-assembled zinc oxide (ZnO) and indium-doping zinc oxide (ZnO:In) nanorod thin films were synthesized on quartz substrates without catalyst in aqueous solution by sol-gel method. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman-scattering spectroscopy, room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and temperature-dependent PL spectra measurements. XRD and Raman spectra illustrated that there were no single In2O3 phase in ZnO lattice after indium doping. The PL spectra of ZnO showed a strong UV emission band located at 394 nm and a very weak visible emission associated with deep-level defects. Indium incorporation induced the shift of optical band gap, quenching of the near-band-edge photoluminescence and enhanced LO mode multiphonon resonant Raman scattering in ZnO crystals at different temperatures. Abnormal temperature dependence of UV emission integrated intensity of ZnO and ZnO:In samples is observed. The local state emission peak of ZnO:In samples at 3.37 eV is observed in low-temperature PL spectra. The near-band-edge emission peak at room temperature was a mixture of excitons and impurity-related transitions for both of two samples.

Abstract
ZnO hexagonal prisms have been grown from poly (vinylpyrrolidone)-assisted electrochemical assembly onto p-type Si (111) substrate. These ZnO prisms arrays are highly (0002) orientated. The (0001) end facets and {1010} side facets of the hexagonal prisms are well defined. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of these ZnO prisms shows an intense ultraviolet near band-gap emission with a full width at half maximum of 86 meV at room temperature. The low-temperature PL spectrum is split into well-resolved free and bound exciton emission lines. The temperature dependence of the exciton emission intensities shows a nonmonotonic decaying behavior, which can be explained by the existence of interfacial states.

Abstract
Mg(x)Zn(1-x)O ternary alloy nanocrystals with hexagonal wurtzite structures were fabricated by using the sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction patterns, UV-vis absorption spectra, and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the structural and optical properties of the nanocrystals. For as-prepared nanocrystals, the band gap increases with increasing Mg content. Weak excitonic emission with strong deep-level emission related to oxygen vacancy and interface defects is observed in the photoluminescence spectra at room temperature. Thermal annealing in oxygen was used to decrease the number of defects and to improve the quality of the nanocrystals. In terms of XRD results, the grain sizes of nanocrystals increase with increasing annealing temperature and the lattice constants of alloy are smaller than those of pure ZnO. The band gap becomes narrower with increasing annealing temperature. For Mg(x)Zn(1-x)O nanocrystals (x=0.03-0.15) annealed at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1000 degrees C, intense near-band-edge (NBE) emissions and weak deep-level (DL) emissions are observed. Consequently, the quality of Mg(x)Zn(1-x)O nanocrystals can be improved by thermal annealing.

Abstract
Luminescence properties of nanosized zinc oxide (ZnO) colloids depend greatly on their surface properties, which are in turn largely determined by the method of preparation. ZnO nanoparticles in the size range from 3 to 9 nm were prepared by addition of tetramethylammonium hydroxide ((CH3)4NOH) to an ethanolic zinc acetate solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates nanocrystalline ZnO membranes with polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure. The ZnO membranes have a strong visible-emission intensity and the intensity depends upon hydrolysis time. The infrared spectra imply a variety of forms of zinc acetate complexes present on the surface of ZnO particles. The effect of the ZnO membrane surface properties on photoluminescence is discussed.

Abstract
Polarization dependent leakage loss as well as optical birefringence for the fundamental mode in square- and rectangular-lattice holey fibers with elliptical air holes are studied numerically based on the full-vector finite element method for the first time. It is shown that high birefringence in the order of 10-2 and large polarization dependent loss required for single-polarization single-mode transmission are both achievable by using the proposed structure.

Abstract
We report results from a study of events with a double-Pomeron exchange topology produced in p p collisions at sqrt[s]=1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We find that the differential production cross section agrees in shape with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization, and that the ratio of double-Pomeron exchange to single diffractive production rates is relatively unsuppressed as compared to the O(10) suppression factor previously measured in single diffractive production.

Search for Kaluza-Klein graviton emission in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV using the missing energy signature. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2004; 92:121802. Abstract
We report on a search for direct Kaluza-Klein graviton production in a data sample of 84 pb(-1) of ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and one or two high energy jets. We compare the data with the predictions from a (3+1+n)-dimensional Kaluza-Klein scenario in which gravity becomes strong at the TeV scale. At 95% confidence level (C.L.) for n=2, 4, and 6 we exclude an effective Planck scale below 1.0, 0.77, and 0.71 TeV, respectively.

Abstract
We present the results of a search for pair production of scalar top quarks (t(1)) in an R-parity violating supersymmetry scenario in 106 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In this mode each t(1) decays into a tau lepton and a b quark. We search for events with two tau's, one decaying leptonically (e or mu) and one decaying hadronically, and two jets. No candidate events pass our final selection criteria. We set a 95% confidence level lower limit on the t(1) mass at 122 GeV/c(2) for Br(t(1)-->tau b)=1.

Abstract
We report on a search for a high mass, narrow width particle that decays directly to emu, etau, or microtau. We use approximately 110 pb(-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab from 1992 to 1995. No evidence of lepton flavor violating decays is found. Limits are set on the production and decay of sneutrinos with R-parity violating interactions.

Abstract
Cauda equina syndrome after regional anaesthesia is a serious and devastating complication. Its occurrence after epidural anaesthesia is rare. We report a 46-year-old male who received epidural anaesthesia for ureterorenoscopic lithotripsy and developed cauda equina syndrome postoperatively. Despite one failed attempt at entering the epidural space with an epidural needle resulting in dural puncture, an epidural catheter was inserted and 20 ml pH adjusted lignocaine 2% with 1:200,000 adrenaline injected via the catheter without untoward event. The possible causes of this complication are discussed. Fortunately, this patient recovered almost completely ten months later.

Abstract
Pooling designs are used in clone library screening to efficiently distinguish positive clones from negative clones. Mathematically, a pooling design is just a nonadaptive group testing scheme which has been extensively studied in the literature. In some applications, there is a third category of clones called "inhibitors" whose effect is to neutralize positives. Specifically, the presence of an inhibitor in a pool dictates a negative outcome even though positives are present. Sequential group testing schemes, which can be modified to three-stage schemes, have been proposed for the inhibitor model, but it is unknown whether a pooling design (a one-stage scheme) exists. Another open question raised in the literature is whether the inhibitor model can treat unreliable pool outcomes. In this paper, we answer both open problems by giving a pooling design, as well as a two-stage scheme, for the inhibitor model with unreliable outcomes. The number of pools required by our schemes are quite comparable to the three-stage scheme.

Central pseudorapidity gaps in events with a leading antiproton at the fermilab tevatron pp collider. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2003; 91:011802. Abstract
We report a measurement of the fraction of events with a large pseudorapidity gap deltaeta within the pseudorapidity region available to the proton dissociation products X in p+p-->p+X. For a final state p of fractional momentum loss xi(p) and 4-momentum transfer squared t(p) within 0.06<xi(p)<0.09 and |t(p)|<1.0 [0.2] GeV2 at sqrt[s]=1800 [630] GeV, the fraction of events with deltaeta>3 is found to be 0.246+/-0.001 (stat)+/-0.042 (syst) [0.184+/-0.001 (stat)+/-0.043 (syst)]. Our results are compared with gap fractions measured in minimum bias pp collisions and with theoretical expectations.

Search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark in dilepton events from pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2003; 90:251801. Abstract
We have searched for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop) in 107 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Each stop is assumed to decay into a lepton, bottom quark, and supersymmetric neutrino. Such a scenario would give rise to events with two leptons, two hadronic jets, and a substantial imbalance of transverse energy. No evidence of such a stop signal has been found. We exclude stop masses in the region (80</=m(t)</=135 GeV/c(2)) in the mass plane of stop versus sneutrino.

Abstract
We report a search for the production of long-lived charged massive particles in a data sample of 90 pb(-1) of square root[s]=1.8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The search uses the muonlike penetration and anomalously high ionization energy loss signature expected for such a particle to discriminate it from backgrounds. The data are found to agree with background expectations, and cross section limits of O(1) pb are derived using two reference models, a stable quark and a stable scalar lepton.

Abstract
We report the results of a search for a W' boson produced in pp; collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 106 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We observe no significant excess of events above background for a W' boson decaying to a top and bottom quark pair. In a model where this boson would mediate interactions involving a massive right-handed neutrino (nu(R)) and have standard model strength couplings, we use these data to exclude a W' boson with mass between 225 and 536 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for M(W')>>M(nu(R)) and between 225 and 566 GeV/c(2) at 95% confidence level for M(W')<M(nu(R)).

Abstract
The exclusive gammaE(T) signal has a small standard model cross section and is thus a channel sensitive to new physics. This signature is predicted by models with a superlight gravitino or with large extra spatial dimensions. We search for such signals at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, using 87 pb(-1) of data at square root [s]=1.8 TeV, and extract 95% C.L. limits on these processes. A limit of 221 GeV is set on the scale |F|(1/2) in supersymmetric models. For 4, 6, and 8 extra dimensions, model-dependent limits on the fundamental mass scale M(D) of 0.55, 0.58, and 0.60 TeV, respectively, are found. We also specify a "pseudo-model-independent" method of comparing the results to theoretical predictions.

Abstract
Results of a comparative field study on the performance of 25-mm inhalable samplers (Institute of Occupational Medicine [IOM]) and midget impingers for the collection of total isocyanates in air using the 1-(9-anthracenylmethyl)piperazine (MAP) reagent are presented. Air sampling and analysis was performed according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health MAP draft method 5525. Midget impingers filled with 15 mL of 1 x 10(-4) M MAP in butyl benzoate were operated at 1 L/min. IOM cassettes loaded with 25-mm quartz fiber filters impregnated with 500 microg MAP, were operated at 2 L/min. Filters were field extracted with 10 mL of 1 x 10(-4) M MAP in acetonitrile. Thirty-four impinger-IOM pairs were collected in three autobody shops during spray painting tasks. Regression analysis [Ln (IOM) = 1.0 Ln (impinger), R2 = 0.98] and a paired t-test (Pr > 0.9) demonstrated that impingers and IOMs perform equally in their collection efficiency for the monomer and total oligomeric hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). IOM performance did not deteriorate at longer sampling times compared with the impinger performance. Within-sampler variability was calculated from the individual coefficients of variation (CV) of the 17 pairs of like samplers. The mean of CVs (SD)% for the monomer and total oligomeric HDI was approximately 12 (12)% and 15 (13)% for the IOM and the impinger sampler, respectively. Poor correlation (Pearson correlation coefficient < 0.3) and statistically nonsignificant differences (P > 0.74 two-sided) were found for the between-sampler CVs. Factors that might have influenced the observed sampler agreement are also discussed. It is concluded that MAP impregnated filters can be successfully used for sampling of slow curing total aliphatic isocyanates in air.

Abstract
Carcinoid tumors are uncommon tumors of the neuroendocrine system. They grow slowly and may remain silent for years before presenting with carcinoid syndrome. A diagnosis of asymptomatic carcinoid tumor is difficult. Wide resection of the primary tumor and metastatic lesions is the first choice of treatment. Primary carcinoid is sometimes distributed throughout the entire body, but it is rare in the spleen. We herein present a rare case of a symptomless carcinoid tumor that predominantly invaded the spleen with liver metastasis.
