Abstract
OBJECTIVE Myopia is becoming more common, a significant public health issue everywhere, including in China. There needs to be a comprehensive analysis of the evidence about the extent of myopia in Chinese schoolchildren, despite earlier studies showing a growing frequency in China. Therefore, the frequency of myopia in Chinese schoolchildren is examined in this study with supporting data and a meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The 2022 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards were used for this research. From January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2022, five computerized bibliographic databases, including PUBMED, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and China Index Medicus, were reviewed and aimed at investigating myopia's prevalence in China. The studies' methodological quality was evaluated. Myopia is defined as a refractive error. Data were collected according to gender, age, and refraction method. The prevalence was calculated through a meta-analysis. RESULTS Data from 11 quality-assessed studies, with a total of 1,013,206 adolescents, were included. Hanting District children had an overall myopia prevalence of 45.47%, but Changyi children had a myopia prevalence of 82.37%. In general, 48.56, 47.30, and 31.62% of elementary, middle, and higher school pupils had mild myopia, compared to 1.12, 8.89, and 20.12% who had high myopia. Children aged 7-9 years old experienced the largest overall increase in the prevalence of myopia. For girls and boys, the prevalence of higher myopia was 7.59% and 6.43% (p<0.001). Yet, the spherical equivalent (SE) dropped as students' ages and grades rose. Myopia prevalence rises as students age and grade. CONCLUSIONS The recent findings revealed that myopia predominated among schoolchildren in Weifang. It steadily grew through age, in addition to it being more common in Changyi neighborhoods. Females had a greater frequency of myopia than males.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Understanding iodine deficiency (ID) burdens and trends in Asia can help guide effective intervention strategies. This study aims to report the incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of ID in 48 Asian countries during the period 1990-2019. STUDY DESIGN Data on ID were retrieved from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 and estimated by age, sex, geographical region, and sociodemographic index (SDI). METHODS The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to evaluate the changing trend of age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) related to ID during the period 1990-2019. RESULTS In Asia, there were 126,983,965.8 cases with 5,466,213.1 new incidence and 1,765,995.5 DALYs of ID in 2019. Between 1999 and 2019, the EAPC in ASIR, ASPR and ASDR were -0.6 (95% confidence interval [CI], -0.8 to -0.4), -0.9 (95% CI, -1.2 to -0.7), and -1.6 (95% CI, -1.8 to -1.5), respectively. Malaysia charted the largest decrease in ASIR, ASPR, and ASDR (82.4%, 85.3%, and 80.9% separately), whereas the Philippines and Pakistan were the only two countries that witnessed an increase in ASIR and ASPR. ID burdens were more pronounced in women, countries located to the south of the Himalayas, and low-middle SDI regions. CONCLUSIONS The incidence, prevalence, and DALYs of ID in Asia substantially decreased from 1990 to 2019. Women and low-middle SDI countries have relatively high ID burdens. Governments need to pay constant attention to the implementation and monitoring of universal salt iodization.

Abstract
N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAR), ionotropic glutamate receptors, mediate a slow component of excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system and play a key role in normal brain function and development. Genetic variations in GRIN genes encoding NMDAR subunits that alter the receptor's functional characteristics are associated with a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. Pathological GRIN variants located in the M2 re-entrant loop lining the channel pore cause significant functional changes, the most consequential alteration being a reduction in voltage-dependent Mg2+ inhibition. Voltage-dependent Mg2+ block is a unique feature of NMDAR biology whereby channel activation requires both ligand binding and postsynaptic membrane depolarization. Thus, loss of NMDAR Mg2+ block will have a profound impact on synaptic function and plasticity. Here, we choose 11 missense variants within the GRIN1, GRIN2A, and GRIN2B genes that alter residues located in the M2 loop and significantly reduce Mg2+ inhibition. Each variant was evaluated for tolerance to genetic variation using the 3-dimensional structure and assessed for functional rescue pharmacology via electrophysiological recordings. Three FDA-approved NMDAR drugs-memantine, dextromethorphan, and ketamine-were chosen based on their ability to bind near the M2 re-entrant loop, potentially rectifying dysregulated NMDAR function by supplementing the reduced voltage-dependent Mg2+ block. These results provide insight of structural determinants of FDA-approved NMDAR drugs at their binding sites in the channel pore and may further define conditions necessary for the use of such agents as potential rescue pharmacology.

Abstract
The nonlinear interaction between the double tearing mode (DTM) and Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities with different shear flow profiles has been numerically investigated via the use of a compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model. We focus on KH instabilities in weak and reversed magnetic shear plasmas with strong stabilizing effect of field line bending. Results show that KH instabilities coupled with DTMs occur in these plasmas and the KH mode dominates the instability dynamics, suggesting the crucial role of weak magnetic shear in the formation of high-mode harmonics. For symmetric flows, an asymmetric forced magnetic reconnection configuration is maintained during the growth phase, leading to interlocking of the modes. Additionally, this investigation of the DTM-KH instability interaction contributes to our understanding of the nonlinear reconnection mechanism in the regime of weak and reversed magnetic shear plasmas, which is relevant for astrophysical and fusion studies.

Abstract
Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36 nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6 pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5 GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4 GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Abstract
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is the main cause of fractures in women. Resistance exercise has a positive effect on bone mineral density in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients, but its mechanism is unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the mechanism of resistance exercise in improving ovariectomized osteoporotic rats based on the transcriptome sequencing technique. Eighteen female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the sham-operated group, the non-exercise group, and the resistance exercise group. The rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis was established by bilateral ovariectomy. Ten weeks after the operation, the resistance exercise group received 2 weeks of adaptive training, and 12 weeks of resistance exercise began in the 13th week. The rats were trained 5 days per week, in 4 sets of 3 repetitions per day. After the intervention, all rats were sacrificed, and the body weight, bone mineral density, trabecular bone microarchitecture, and bone biomechanics were examined. At the same time, RNA-seq and enrichment analysis of gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes were performed on the left tibias, followed by Elisa and RT-qPCR verification. It had been found that resistance exercise can effectively counteract the weight gain of ovariectomized osteoporotic rats, and has a good effect on bone mineral density and trabecular bone microarchitecture. Enrichment analysis showed that regulation of gene expression and osteoclast differentiation is the most closely related biological process and signaling pathway shared by RE/Ovx and NE/Ovx groups. Our results revealed that resistance exercise can play a role in inhibiting osteoclast activation and preventing the enhancement of osteoclast bone resorption function in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats by inhibiting Fos/Fosb-regulated TRAP activation and relieving Calcr inhibition, which has important application value in preventing bone loss caused by estrogen deficiency.

Abstract
A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139 fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. No signal is observed, and limits are set on the squared mixing parameters of the N with the left-handed neutrino states for the N mass range 3 GeV

Abstract
A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Abstract
Adjusting time-dependent covariates into prediction models may help improve model performance and expand clinical applications. The methodology of handling time-dependent covariates is limited in traditional regression strategies (i.e., landmark model, joint model). For example, the number of predictors and practical situations which can be handled are restricted when using regression models. One new strategy is to use machine learning (i.e., neural networks). This review summarizes the methodology of handling time-dependent covariates in prediction models, such as applicable scenarios, strengths, and limitations, to offer methodological enlightenment for processing time-dependent covariates.

Abstract
The application of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has shown impressive anti-tumor efficacy across multiple malignant tumors, leading to the prolonged survival period of tumor patients. However, immune-related adverse events should not be ignored. Checkpoint inhibitor pneumonitis (CIP) is a pulmonary adverse event that can occur in malignant tumor patients after receiving ICIs treatment. The incidence of CIP has been reported to range from 2.7% to 20.0% in clinical trials and real-world research. Furthermore, some patients might suffer from serious or fatal CIP, and the prognosis of such patients will be poor. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment may improve the prognosis of these patients. The establishment of a whole-process CIP comprehensive surveillance management mode covering the health care system and patients during ICIs treatment might be helpful to improve the early diagnosis and treatment capacity of CIP, which is a key measure to improve the prognosis of these patients.

Abstract
Accurate spike sorting to the appropriate neuron is crucial for neural activity analysis. To improve spike sorting performance, it is essential to fully leverage each processing step, including filtering, spike detection, feature extraction, and clustering. However, compared to the latter two steps that were widely studied and optimized, the filtering process was largely neglected. In this study, we proposed a fast and effective spike sorting method (MultiFq) based on multi-frequency composite waveform shapes acquired through an optimized filtering process. When combined with the classical PCA-Km spiking sorting algorithm, our proposed MultiFq significantly improved its sorting performance and achieved as high performance as the complex Wave-clus did in both the simulated and in vivo datasets. But, the combined method was about 10 times faster than Wave-clus (0.16 s vs. 2.06 s in simulated datasets; 0.46 s vs. 2.03 s in in vivo datasets). Furthermore, we demonstrated the compatibility of our MultiFq by combining it with other sorting algorithms, which consistently resulted in significant improvement in sorting accuracy with the maximum improvement at 35.04%. The above results demonstrated that our proposed method could significantly improve the sorting performance with low computation cost and good compatibility by leveraging the multi-frequency composite waveform shapes.

Abstract
Traditional rice blast resistance breeding largely depends on utilizing typical resistance (R) genes. However, the lack of durable R genes has prompted rice breeders to find new resistance resources. Susceptibility (S) genes are potential new targets for resistance genetic engineering using genome-editing technologies, but identifying them is still challenging. Here, through the integration of genome-wide association study (GWAS) and transcriptional analysis, we identified two genes, RNG1 and RNG3, whose polymorphisms in 3'-untranslated regions (3'-UTR) affected their expression variations. These polymorphisms could serve as molecular markers to identify rice blast-resistant accessions. Editing the 3'-UTRs using CRISPR/Cas9 technology affected the expression levels of two genes, which were positively associated with rice blast susceptibility. Knocking out either RNG1 or RNG3 in rice enhanced the rice blast and bacterial blight resistance, without impacting critical agronomic traits. RNG1 and RNG3 have two major genotypes in diverse rice germplasms. The frequency of the resistance genotype of these two genes significantly increased from landrace rice to modern cultivars. The obvious selective sweep flanking RNG3 suggested it has been artificially selected in modern rice breeding. These results provide new targets for S gene identification and open avenues for developing novel rice blast-resistant materials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To propose a sensitivity test method for geometric correction position deviation of cone-beam CT systems. METHODS We proposed the definition of center deviation and its derivation. We analyzed the influence of the variation of the three-dimensional spatial center of the steel ball point, the projection center and the size of the steel ball point on the deviation of geometric parameters and the reconstructed image results by calculating the geometric correction parameters based on the Noo analytical method using the FDK reconstruction algorithm for image reconstruction. RESULTS The radius of the steel ball point was within 3 mm. The deviation of the center of the calibration parameter was within the order of magnitude and negligible. A 10% Gaussian perturbation of a single pixel in the 3D spatial coordinates of the steel ball point produced a deviation of about 3 pixel sizes, while the same Gaussian perturbation of the 2D projection coordinates of the steel ball point produced a deviation of about 2 pixel sizes. CONCLUSION The geometric correction is more sensitive to the deviation generated by the three-dimensional spatial coordinates of the steel ball point with limited sensitivity to the deviation generated by the two-dimensional projection coordinates of the steel ball point. The deviation sensitivity of a small diameter steel ball point can be ignored.

Abstract
Objective: This retrospective, single-center study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors, either as monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapy, in the management of relapse/refractory classical Hodgkin's lymphoma (R/R cHL) . Methods: A total of 35 patients with R/R cHL who received treatment at the Institute of Hematology and Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College from September 2016 to December 2020 were enrolled in this study. Among them, 17 patients received PD-1 inhibitor monotherapy (PD-1 inhibitor group), while 18 patients received a combination of PD-1 inhibitor and chemotherapy (PD-1 inhibitor + chemotherapy group). Clinical data and follow-up information were retrospectively analyzed, and survival analysis was conducted using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model. Results: The median age of the 35 patients with R/R cHL was 29 years (range: 11-61 years), with 54.3% being male. According to the Ann Arbor staging system, 62.9% of patients presented with advanced (stage Ⅲ/Ⅳ) disease, and 48.6% had extranodal involvement. Before PD-1 inhibitor therapy, the median number of prior lines of therapy was 2 (range: 1-3). Objective responses were observed in 28 patients, including 22 complete response (CR) cases, resulting in an overall response rate (ORR) of 80.0% and a CR rate of 62.9%. Specifically, the ORR and CR rates were 64.7% and 58.8%, respectively, in the PD-1 inhibitor group and 94.4% and 66.7%, respectively, in the PD-1 inhibitor + chemotherapy group. Among the 18 patients who underwent sequential autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT) [13 CR and five partial response (PR) cases], eight patients received PD-1 inhibitor therapy after auto-HSCT as consolidation therapy. All patients maintained a CR status after transplantation, and they exhibited significantly improved progression-free survival (PFS) rates compared with those who did not undergo sequential auto-HSCT (4-year PFS rates: 100% vs 53.5% ; P=0.041). The incidence of immune-related adverse events was 29%, with only one patient experiencing grade≥3 adverse reactions, which indicated a favorable safety profile for the treatment approach. Conclusions: PD-1 inhibitor monotherapy demonstrates notable efficacy and sustained response in patients with R/R cHL. PD-1 inhibitors combined with chemotherapy significantly improve response rates. Additionally, for salvage therapy-sensitive patients, consolidation treatment with PD-1 inhibitors after auto-HSCT exhibits the potential for prolonging PFS.

Abstract
Plant height is one of the most crucial components of plant structure. However, due to its complexity, the genetic architecture of rice plant height has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to determine rice plant height using 178 commercial rice varieties and identified 37 loci associated with rice plant height (LAPH). Among these loci, in LAPH2, we identified a polygalacturonase gene, OsPG3, which was genetically and functionally associated with rice plant height. The rice plant exhibits a super dwarf phenotype when the knockout of the OsPG3 gene occurs via CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology. RNA-Seq analysis indicated that OsPG3 modulates the expression of genes involved in phytohormone metabolism and cell-wall-biosynthesis pathways. Our findings suggest that OsPG3 plays a vital role in controlling rice plant height by regulating cell wall biosynthesis. Given that rice architecture is one of the most critical phenotypes in rice breeding, OsPG3 has potential in rice's molecular design breeding toward an ideal plant height.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the incidence of delayed vaccination with the national immunization program vaccines among children aged 0-6 years in Xuhui District, Shanghai, and to evaluate the safety of delayed vaccination. Methods: A stratified random sampling was used to obtain six vaccination clinics in Xuhui District, Shanghai. The vaccination records of children 0-6 years from these six vaccination clinics were collected from the Shanghai Immunization Program Information Management System. Adverse events following immunization (AEFI) data were collected from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention. Descriptive epidemiology was used to analyze the data. Children were divided into the timely vaccination group and delayed vaccination group according whether they were delayed in vaccination (received one month or more after the recommended age among children aged ≤1 year; received three months or more after the recommended age among children aged >1 year). The safety of four vaccination methods-individual vaccination, simultaneous vaccination, routine vaccination and combined vaccination-were further compared. Differences between groups were compared using chi-square test. Results: From 2019 to 2021, six vaccination clinics in Xuhui District administered 124 031 doses of the national immunization program vaccines among children aged 0-6 years, and delayed vaccinations accounted for 25.99% (32 234/124 031) of these doses. In 2020, the delayed vaccination rate during the first-level COVID-19 public health emergency response period in Shanghai was significantly higher than that in the same period in 2019 (34.70% vs. 24.19%, χ2=136.23, P<0.05). The delayed vaccination rate during the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in 2021 was significantly higher than that in the same period in 2019 (25.27% vs. 22.55%, χ2=82.80, P<0.05). From 2019 to 2021, a total of 475 cases of AEFI were reported in six vaccination clinics, with a reported incidence of 382.97 per 100 000 doses, including 421 cases of common adverse reaction (88.63%, 339.43 per 100 000 doses), 51 cases of rare adverse reaction (10.74%, 41.12 per 100 000 doses) and 3 cases of coincidences (0.63%, 2.42 per 100 000 doses). The reported incidence of AEFI among delayed vaccinations was significantly lower than that among timely vaccinations (291.62 per 100 000 doses vs. 415.05 per 100 000 doses). The incidence of AEFI for the four delayed vaccination methods (individual vaccination, simultaneous vaccination, routine vaccination and combined vaccination) was lower than that for timely vaccination. There were significant differences between the groups except for the routine vaccination group (χ2=9.82, P<0.05; χ2=5.46, P<0.05; χ2=2.97, P>0.05; χ2=11.89, P<0.05). Conclusions: In Xuhui District of Shanghai, 25.99% of doses of the national immunization program vaccines administered to children 0-6 years were delayed. Delayed vaccination does not increase the risk of AEFI compared with timely vaccination.

Abstract
Traditional scalp EEG instrumentation is bulky and arduous to set up, requiring wires that constrain the subject's movement, conductive wet gels that dry over time which limits long-term recording, and/or is socially stigmatized. Therefore, there is growing research in in-ear EEG to increase user wearability, ease of use, and concealability. However, the fabrication of in-ear EEG sensors utilizes complex equipment and materials to capture the intricate geometry of the ear and to fabricate custom earpieces and electrodes. This work aims to lower the barrier of entry by decreasing the fabrication complexity by using PCB components with versatile, user-generic designs. Measured results on the assembled earpiece demonstrate that it viably captures eye blinks, jaw clench, auditory steady-state response (ASSR), and alpha modulation. Additionally, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) experiments show reliable electrode-skin contact with impedance comparable to conventional dry-electrode designs at substantially greater channel density.

Abstract
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a need for reliable diagnostic testing. However, state-of-the-art detection methods rely on laboratory tests and also vary in accuracy. We evaluate that the usage of a graphene field-effect-transistor (GFET) coupled with machine learning can be a promising alternate diagnostic testing method. We processed the current-voltage data gathered from the GFET sensors to assess information about the presence of COVID-19 in biosamples. We perform binary classification using the following machine learning algorithms: Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Support Vector Machines (SVM) with the Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel, and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) in conjunction with Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We find that LDA and SVM with RBF proved to be the most accurate in identifying positive and negative samples, with accuracies of 99% and 98.5%, respectively. Based on these results, there is promise to develop a bioelectronic diagnostic method for COVID-19 detection by combining GFET technology with machine learning.

Abstract
In the case of periodontitis, local microecological imbalance can cause a large number of plaque biofilm accumulations, leading to the destruction of periodontal tissue and attachment loss, which makes it particularly difficult for the periodontal regenerative healing. In order to overcome the clinical treatment dilemma of periodontitis, periodontal tissue regeneration therapy assisted by new biomaterials has become a hot topic in recent years, among which electrospinning biomaterials with good biocompatibility have attracted wide attention. In this paper, based on periodontal clinical problems, the importance of functional regeneration is presented and clarified. Besides, according to the application of electrospinning biomaterials reported in previous researches, their effects of promoting functional periodontal tissue regeneration are analyzed. In addition, the internal mechanism of periodontal tissue repair by electrospinning materials is discussed and the future research direction is also proposed, in order to provide a new strategy for clinical treatment of periodontal diseases.

Abstract
Markov State Models (MSM) and related techniques have gained significant traction as a tool for analyzing and guiding molecular dynamics (MD) simulations due to their ability to extract structural, thermodynamic, and kinetic information on proteins using computationally feasible MD simulations. The MSM analysis often relies on spectral decomposition of empirically generated transition matrices. This work discusses an alternative approach for extracting the thermodynamic and kinetic information from the so-called rate/generator matrix rather than the transition matrix. Although the rate matrix itself is built from the empirical transition matrix, it provides an alternative approach for estimating both thermodynamic and kinetic quantities, particularly in diffusive processes. A fundamental issue with this approach is known as the embeddability problem. The key contribution of this work is the introduction of a novel method to address the embeddability problem as well as the collection and utilization of existing algorithms previously used in the literature. The algorithms are tested on data from a one-dimensional toy model to show the workings of these methods and discuss the robustness of each method in dependence of lag time and trajectory length.

Abstract
The prevalence of mouth breathing is high in children and adolescents. It causes various changes to the respiratory tract and, consequently, craniofacial growth deformities. However, the underlying mechanisms contributing to these effects are obscure. Herein, we aimed to study the effects of mouth breathing on chondrocyte proliferation and death in the condylar cartilage and morphological changes in the mandible and condyle. Additionally, we aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying chondrocyte apoptosis and investigate any variations in the related pathways. Subchondral bone resorption and decreased condylar cartilage thickness were observed in mouth-breathing rats; further, mRNA expression levels of Collagen II, Aggrecan, and Sox 9 were lower in the mouth breathing group, while those of matrix metalloproteinase 9 increased. TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labelling staining and immunohistochemistry analyses showed that apoptosis occurred in the proliferative and hypertrophic layers of cartilage in the mouth breathing group. TNF, BAX, cytochrome c, and cleaved-caspase-3 were highly expressed in the condylar cartilage of the mouth-breathing rats. These results suggest that mouth breathing leads to subchondral bone resorption, cartilage layer thinning, and cartilage matrix destruction, inducing chondrocyte apoptosis via both the extrinsic and mitochondrial apoptosis pathways.

By retrieving the clinical database of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, the patients with moderately to severely active UC were collected, who underwent VDZ treatment from January 2020 to June 2022. The modified Mayo score and Mayo endoscopic score (MES) were employed to evaluate disease activity and intestinal inflammation in UC patients, respectively. According to whether vitamin D was supplemented during VDZ treatment, the patients were divided into supplementary group and non-supplementary group. According to baseline serum 25(OH) D level, UC patients were divided into vitamin D deficiency group and non-deficiency group. According to whether vitamin D was supplemented, the patients of each group were divided into supplementary subgroup and non-supplementary subgroup, respectively. The clinical response rate, clinical remission rate and mucosal healing rate at week 30 after receiving VDZ treatment and the retention rate of VDZ at the 72nd week were observed. The effect of baseline serum 25 (OH) D level on the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation was analyzed by chi-square test. The effects of vitamin D supplementation on the clinical efficacy and drug retention of VDZ in UC were analyzed by chi-square test and Kaplan-Meier curve, respectively. Results: A total of 80 patients with moderately to severely active UC, who were aged (39.4±13.0) years(18-75 years), 37 male and 43 female, were included. There were 43 cases in supplementary group and 37 cases in non-supplementary group. There were 59 cases in the deficiency group, including 32 cases in the supplementary subgroup and 27 cases in the non-supplementary subgroup. There were 21 cases in the non-deficiency group, including 11 cases in the supplementary subgroup and 10 cases in the non-supplementary subgroup. At week 30, the average level of serum 25(OH) D was shown to be higher in supplementary group than that at week 0 [(24.5±5.4) vs (17.7±6.7) μg/L, P<0.001]. At week 30, in contrast with non-supplementary group, erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR)[75.0% (24.3%, 86.7%) vs 32.7% (-2.6%, 59.3%), P=0.005] and modified Mayo score [(4.7±2.8) vs (2.3±2.7) points, P<0.001] and MES score [(1.2±1.1) vs (0.4±0.9) points, P=0.001] were significantly reduced, clinical response rate [79.1%(34/43) vs 56.8%(21/37), P=0.032], clinical remission rate [67.4%(29/43) vs 29.7%(11/37), P=0.001] and mucosal healing rate [72.1%(31/43) vs 37.8%(14/37), P=0.002] were higher. At week 72, drug retention rate of VDZ was shown to be higher in supplementary group than in non-supplementary group [55.8%(24/43) vs 27.0%(10/37), P=0.004]. The further analysis showed that vitamin D supplementation could only improve clinical response rate[71.9%(23/32) vs 44.4%(12/27), P=0.033], clinical remission rate[62.5%(20/32) vs 14.8%(4/27), P<0.001], mucosal healing rate[68.8%(22/32) vs 22.2%(6/27), P<0.001] and drug retention rate [53.1%(17/32) vs 13.8%(4/27), P=0.001] in the patients with vitamin D deficiency. Conclusion: Vitamin D supplementation contributes to improving clinical response rate, clinical remission rate, mucosal healing rate and drug retention rate of VDZ in UC patients.
