Abstract
BACKGROUND Tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) is involved in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (CD). However, results on the association between the polymorphisms in TNF-alpha promoter and the risk of CD are inconsistent. AIM To perform a quantitative synthesis for the genetic polymorphisms in TNF-alpha promoter and CD risk. METHODS Databases were searched (up to 2009) and 31 studies were included. Risks of CD associated with the polymorphisms in TNF-alpha promoter were assessed. RESULTS Overall, individuals with -1031 TC+CC genotype had a slightly increased risk to develop CD compared with individuals with -1031 TT genotype (OR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.03-1.70). In the further stratified analysis, we found Asians with the -1031T>C, -863 C>A and -857 C>T variant polymorphisms have almost one and a half CD risk compared with other genotypes (OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.16-2.15; OR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.18-2.02; OR, 1.54; 95% CI, 1.19-1.99 respectively). We did not find -308 G>A variant associated with CD location and disease behaviours in stratified analysis. CONCLUSIONS TNF-alpha polymorphisms in the promoter region might be used as a biomarker for CD risk prediction. Larger studies with mixed ethnicity subjects and stratified by clinical and sub clinical characteristics are needed to validate our findings.

Abstract
A passive magnetic field cancellation device (PMFCD) is designed. The PMFCD could automatically cancel the field as an active cancellation system did; however it requires no power sources and feedback systems. The capability of the PMFCD is based on the principle that a closed loop can resist flux variation and keep the flux constant inside. The closed loop in the PMFCD is formed by connecting two pairs of high temperature superconductor Helmholtz coils with different radii in series. More important thing is that the ratio of the radius and the turn number between the coils has to satisfy a number of conditions, with which 100% cancellation can be reached. Theoretical methods to obtain the turn number ratio and radius ratio are the major part of the paper. Numerical simulation was followed, aiming to evaluate field distribution under a cancellation state and correct the theoretical values.

Abstract
We report the experimental realization of horizontal plasmonic slot waveguides capable of subdiffraction modal confinement at IR wavelengths. These waveguides have a propagation length of approximately 6 lambda(g) and are monolithically integrated with conventional silicon photonic waveguides on the same silicon-on-insulator platform. Direct coupling of light from the silicon waveguides to the plasmonic waveguides was achieved with an efficiency of 30% using taper-funnel couplers to obtain mode matching between the two waveguide systems.

Abstract
This study was designed to summarize quantitatively the evidence for a relationship between collagen type I α1 (COLIA1) Sp1 polymorphism and osteoporotic fracture risk in Caucasian post-menopausal women. This meta-analysis included 16 studies, which analysed 2294 patients with fractures and 10285 controls. The combined results showed that there was a significant difference in genotype distribution (SS odds ratio [OR] 0.72; Ss OR 1.18; ss OR 1.97) between patients with fractures and controls. When stratifying by the fracture site, it was found that: (i) patients with vertebral fractures had a significantly higher frequency of the Ss genotype and a lower frequency of the SS genotype than controls; and (ii) patients with non-vertebral fractures had a significantly higher frequency of the ss genotype and a lower frequency of the SS genotype than controls. This meta-analysis suggests that the COLIA1 Sp1 polymorphism may be associated with osteoporotic fracture in Caucasian post-menopausal women.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system. Umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells are immunosuppressive. We transplanted mesenchymal stem cells in a patient with refractory progressive MS, and the disease course was stabilized after the transplantation. We postulate that mesenchymal stem cells have a potent immunosuppressive effect in vivo.

Abstract
We propose and investigate ultracompact aperture-coupled plasmonic ring resonators with submicron bending radii based on strongly-confined metal-insulator-metal plasmonic waveguides. Enhanced coupling can be obtained via diffraction by small apertures having typical widths between 50-100 nm in the metallic sidewall between the ring and bus waveguides. Both analytical model and rigorous FDTD simulations show that 500 nm-radius ring resonators can be obtained with low insertion loss, wide free spectral range and sub-diffraction cavity volume of less than 0.1(lambda(0)/n(eff))(3).

Abstract
A five-layer silicon-based nanoplasmonic waveguiding structure is proposed for ultrafast all-optical modulation and switching applications. Ultrafast nonlinear phase and amplitude modulation is achieved via photo-generated free carrier dynamics in ion-implanted silicon using above-bandgap femtosecond pump pulses. Both an analytical model and rigorous numerical simulations of the structures have shown that a switching time of 5 ps and an on-off contrast of 35 dB can be achieved in these devices.

Abstract
Heterogenous expression of recombinant proteins in milk of livestock at a large scale is very labour-intensive to be achieved with current transgenic animals, and usually seen as time-consuming, expensive and technically most challenging. Here we describe a convenient system for transient production of recombinant human growth hormone and its extensive use in recombinant protein production for therapeutic purposes. In this study, an adenoviral vector containing the GFP gene and hGH gene was constructed for direct infusion into the epithelium of mammary glands of goats via the teat canal during the period of natural lactation. Western-blot analysis of milk samples obtained from all of the viral-treated founders indicated that the recombinant hGH (rhGH) was secreted into the milk of the goats. The concentrations of rhGH in milk ranged from 0.6 to 2.4 mg/ml and lasted for more than 10 days during lactation. These data suggest that it is possible to produce larger amounts of recombinant human growth hormone in the milk of livestock animals by using replication-defective adenoviruses.

Abstract
Radiation hybrid (RH) mapping technique was exploited to determine chromosome locations of 26 human novel full length cDNAs recently cloned. All these cDNA clones were isolated from human cord blood CD (+) (34) cells and may be related to regulation of hematopoiesis. 23 genes were successfully mapped to chromosomal positions, while RH analyses were not possible in the remaining 3 cases. RH technique is indeed a powerful tool for mapping novel cDNA sequences due to its rapidity, precision, convenience and reproducibility.

Abstract
Five ORFs in the genome of Duck enteritis virus (DEV) corresponding to UL31, UL32, UL33, UL34, and UL35 genes of Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) were amplified by a modified "targeted gene walking" PCR, cloned, and sequenced. UL33, UL34, and UL35 genes were oriented from the left to the right of genome, while UL31 and UL32 had an opposite orientation. A comparison of deduced amino acid sequences of the DEV ORFs with their alphaherpesvirus homologs showed well-conserved regions except for the UL34 and UL35 genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that DEV was closer to the genus Mardivirus than to any other genus of the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae. Based on this evidence, we proposed to assign DEV to the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae.
