Removal of manganese by chelating agents from brain and liver of manganese treated rats: as in vitro and an in vivo study

Some chelating agents were examined for their ability to remove manganese from brain and liver (in vivo) and their sub-cellular fractions (in vitro), of rats pretreated with manganese sulphate. Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), 1,2-cyclohexylenedinitrilotetraacetic acid (CDTA) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) were extremely effective in vivo while CDTA and p-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) were efficient in vitro.

Ameloblastic fibroma. Case report

A rare odontogenic tumour, ameloblastic fibroma, is presented as a case report and briefly discussed.

Effect of gamma-irradiation on oocysts of Eimeria necatrix

Effect of gamma radiation on oocysts of Eimeria necatrix was investigated. It was observed that oocysts exposed to 200 kR or above did not sporulate. Irratiation at 10-150 kR caused a progressive decrease in sporulation. Irradiation affected normal development of unsporulated oocysts as the zygote protoplasm divided into unequal masses or was shattered into granules. Increase in the intensity of irradiation of sporulated oocysts resulted in the progressive decrease in severity of the resultant infections in chicks and their effects - mortality, type of lesions developed, total oocyst production and immunity produced - were comparable with infections induced by decreasing the number of unirradiated oocysts. Infection produced by 1000 unirradiated oocysts was comparable with that resulting from 50 000 oocysts irradiated at 25 kR. Infection obtained with 20 000 unexposed oocysts approximated to that produced by 50 000 oocysts irradiated at 2-5 kR. It was concluded that irradiation abolished infectivity of the oocysts/sporozoites rather than bringing about attenuation of the parasite.

Enteric perforation in typhoid fever: a study of 15 cases

Fifteen patients suffering from typhoid perforation are reported and discussed. Controversy still persists regarding the best form of treatment. One can still only state that each patient should be treated on his or her merits.

Blood histamine levels and eosinophil, basophil counts in urticaria

The blood histamine levels, basophil and eosinophil counts and the percentage of vacuolated eosinophils were observed in 30 controls and 15 patients of urticaria. There was a definite rise in eosinophil and basophil count during the acute stage of the disease which decreased in the quiescent or the symptom-free stage. The behavior of blood histamine level was similar. The mechanisms involved are discussed.

Subclasses of T cells with different sensitivities to cytotoxic antibody in the presence of anesthetics

When cytotoxic titrations were made of rabbit anti-mouse brain and anti-Thy-1.2 sera against mouse lymphoid cells in the presence of sodium barbital or xylocaine, it was observed that a proportion of T cells were much more sensitive (50 x) than the remainder. This effect could be detected with ethidium or fluorescein diacetate as indicators of cell death, but not with trypan blue or 51Cr. The highly sensitive cells were found in all lymphoid tissues, being most numerous in spleen and least in lymph nodes.

Evaluation of a single-layer intestinal anastomosis: an experimental study

Fifteen single-layer and 15 double-layer inverting intestinal anastomoses were made in the small intestines of 15 healthy mongrel dogs and the results were compared. The single-layer anastomosis was found to be superior to the double-layer procedure in many respects.

Beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase active on dermatan sulfate

The dodecasaccharide obtained by treating dermatan sulfate with testicular hyaluronidase, chondroitinase AC, and beta-glucuronidase was incubated with diluted, normal human serum at pH 4.5 or 7.0 followed by chondro-4-sulfatase at pH 7.0. Analyses of the reaction products indicate release of hexosamine but not further degradation of the substrate. It is concluded that normal human serum possesses an exo-beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase active on dermatan sulfate.
