Abstract
The effect of catecholamine in vivo was studied on purine catabolism in rats and chickens. Catecholamine, administered intraperitoneally in a high dose, markedly increased plasma uric acid and allantoin in rats, and an increase was also observed with intravenous infusion of a lower dose of catecholamine. The effects of catecholamine were characterized by inhibition with alpha and beta adrenoceptor antagonists. Regarding the mechanism of this catecholamine action on purine catabolism, it was shown that catecholamine stimulated degradation of tissue ATP into the end-product. Plasma allantoin, the final purine catabolite in rats, elicited by catecholamine could be maintained under conditions of renal failure, although the action of catecholamine in intact rat was short lasting. The effect of catecholamine was potentiated and/or prolonged by angiotensin-II and aminophylline, and a hyperuricemic state could be induced by catecholamine treatment in chickens. In addition, increase of plasma purine catabolite by immobilization stress in rats suggested the involvement of endogenous catecholamine. From these experimental results, it is considered that catecholamines probably play a important role in the pathogenesis of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Scanning electron microscopic observations of the subarachnoid space were made in dogs focussing upon the fibre components in both the normal subarachnoid space and in areas of post-haemorrhagic fibrosis. It was concluded that the fibrous tissue originates from the arachnoid membrane itself, while organized haematoma is considered to form a component of the fibrosis. Perfusion of the subarachnoid space of dogs with a solution of 0.1% Toluidine Blue was also done. This showed that cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is carried from the subarachnoid space directly to the dural sinuses through a fine string-like structure, which is conceivably one of the collateral CSF absorptive pathways.

Abstract
The arachnoid villi of 18 dogs were studied. The authors confirmed the pressure gradient changes of the morphology of arachnoid villi of dogs with the scanning electron microscope (SEM). A subarachnoid infusion with 5--10 times higher pressure gradient than the physiological one, tore the superficial endothelial layer from the villi, and the inner part could also be observed stereoscopically. On the surface of the arachnoid villi, the authors observed microvilli, openings of vacuoles and intercellular gaps, but did not find openings of performed channels. After subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) generally the villi were blocked but the authors have observed a red blood cell escaping from a villus intercellularly.

Abstract
A case of dural arteriovenous malformation with giant non-traumatic false aneurysm in the left middle fossa is reported. A 10-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital with pulsating exophthalmos of the left eye, which was successfully treated by ligation of the main feeder and finally by the radical excision of the dural AVM and false aneurysm. False aneurysm of non-traumatic origin is so rare that only two cases were detected in the literature (Reina et al., Sakaki et al.), and no previous case of false aneurysm complicated by dural AVM seems to have been reported.

Abstract
The possible changes in the subarachnoid space after subarachnoid haemorrhage were studied in animals by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). About 1 ml/kg of autogenous blood was injected intracisternally in 36 adult mongrel dogs to investigate changes in the subarachnoid space, over periods ranging from immediately after the injection to as long as 6 months. We have come to the conclusion that the injected blood disappears in about one to two weeks; the fibrosis or thickening of the arachnoid membrane appears in one to three weeks, and then returns to normal in a month in instances of rapid recovery, but there are some cases in which fibrosis persists for a long period and becomes chronic. The fact that an increase of fibrous tissue was found in the parietal region, where the injected blood had hardly reached, appears to indicate that the fibrosis is not always limited to the site of the haemorrhage but can occur in remote regions. We also discuss the usefulness of the SEM in the observation of the subarachnoid space, and the finding that vascular specimen preparations can be made by perfusing the brain with 2-10% phosphate-buffered formaldehyde solution.

Abstract
Body fluid volumes, cardiac output, PRA and pressor responses to angiotensin II (AT) and norepinephrine (NE) were compared between untreated patients with essential hypertension aged younger than 35 (EH-I) and those aged older than 36 years (EH-II). Men blood volume, total body water and extracellular volume were not significantly different between the patients with essential hypertension and normotensive subjects. There were no difinite differences in each volume between the EH-I and EH-II patients either. However, the distribution of blood volume was significantly larger in the essential hypertensive patients than in the normotensive subjects, suggesting that the changes in blood volume might not be homogenous in essential hypertension. In addition, blood volume was noted to have a significant inverse correlation with PRA. Cardiac output at rest was slightly but not significantly less in the EH-I and EH-II groups than in the normotensive group. A decline in blood pressure following 'bed-rest' was accompanied by a decrease in total peripheral resistance index (TPRI). Thus, elevated peripheral vascular resistance seems to be responsible for the mild to moderate hypertension even in the younger patients. PRA and its increases in response to standing or furosemide were normal in the EH-I patients, while they were markedly suppressed in the EH-II patients as compared to the age-matched normotensive subjects. In addition, PRA had a significant inverse correlation with the blood pressure and the scores of the severity of hypertension in the patients with essential hypertension. Thus, it seems likely that low renin in essential hypertension is secondary to long-lasting hypertension. Pressor response to AT significantly correlated with mean blood pressure and that to NE did so with 24 hours' urinary sodium excretion in essential hypertensive patients. The influence of aging on the pressor responses were obscure: the relationships of the pressore responses to blood pressure or to urinary sodium excretion were not different between the EH-I and EH-II groups. The examinations were repeated in 16 patients with essential hypertension (16 to 48 year-old) in 11 to 30 days after the initial study. Twelve of the 16 patients had declines in blood pressure and TPRI at the second study. In 7 of the patients whose blood pressure declined following 'bed-rest', there were significant decreases in pressor response to AT and in blood volume and a significant increase in PRA (group A). The other 5 patients showed a significant decrease in PRA and an enhanced pressor response to NE (group B). The blood volume in the group A was significantly larger than that in the group B at the initial study. It is suggested that the cause of essential hypertension is not homogeneous in that the increased vascular resistance may have been attributed to sodium excess in some patients and to an increased sympathetic activity in others. Some additional factors remain to be taken into account to clarify the complicated aspects of essential hypertension.
