The synthesis of cholesterol glucopyranosiduronate

Cholesterol glucopyranosiduronate was synthesized by the hydrolysis of cholesterol methyl triacetyl glucopyranosiduronate with barium hydroxide under mild conditions. Some of its properties were investigated.

Sterols in Irish moss (Chondrus crispus)

Sterol was isolated from Irish moss (Chondrus crispus) harvested in Nova Scotia. The principal sterol was identified as cholesterol by thin-layer chromatography, gas–liquid chromatography, infrared spectra, and chemical constants of the sterol and its derivatives. The total and free sterol content of the dry seaweed were 0.012% and 0.011% respectively. The crude sterol contained 1.75% of a 5,7-dienol.

The separation of gonadotropin-inhibiting substance in the urine of children

Gonadotropin-inhibiting activity could be demonstrated in a crude extract of urine from children under the age of 3 years. With urine extracts from adults, it was necessary to destroy gonadotropin activity by boiling the extracts, to show that they also contained gonadotropin-inhibiting activity. The batch process of separation of crude extracts by Sephadex gave little inhibiting activity. However, the separation of crude extracts by gradient chromatograms on a Sephadex column demonstrated inhibiting activities in a 0.01 M and in a 0.2 M ammonium acetate eluate, especially in the urine extracts from children.
