Abstract
ABSTRACTPseudomorphic Fe1-x Si films have been grown on Si(111) by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) at room temperature (RT). Structural investigations revealed that the phase crystallizes in the cubic CsCl structure with a lattice constant close to half that of Si. Upon annealing, films thicker than 15Å undergo a phase transition to the stable bulk ε-FeSi, either in epitaxial or in polycrystalline form at temperatures around 300°C. Thinner films do not transform to the ε-FeSi phase. Instead they exhibit a continuous increase of the Si content up to the stoichiometry of FeSi2 The CsCl symmetry persists, exept for prolonged annealing close to the transition to βFeSi2, where γ-FeSi2 (CaF2 ) forms as an intermediate phase.

Abstract
Background Surface waters of aquatic environments have been shown to both evolve and consume hydrogen and the ocean is estimated to be the principal natural source. In some marine habitats, H2 evolution and uptake are clearly due to biological activity, while contributions of abiotic sources must be considered in others. Until now the only known biological process involved in H2 metabolism in marine environments is nitrogen fixation. Principal Findings We analyzed marine and freshwater environments for the presence and distribution of genes of all known hydrogenases, the enzymes involved in biological hydrogen turnover. The total genomes and the available marine metagenome datasets were searched for hydrogenase sequences. Furthermore, we isolated DNA from samples from the North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea, and two fresh water lakes and amplified and sequenced part of the gene encoding the bidirectional NAD(P)-linked hydrogenase. In 21% of all marine heterotrophic bacterial genomes from surface waters, one or several hydrogenase genes were found, with the membrane-bound H2 uptake hydrogenase being the most widespread. A clear bias of hydrogenases to environments with terrestrial influence was found. This is exemplified by the cyanobacterial bidirectional NAD(P)-linked hydrogenase that was found in freshwater and coastal areas but not in the open ocean. Significance This study shows that hydrogenases are surprisingly abundant in marine environments. Due to its ecological distribution the primary function of the bidirectional NAD(P)-linked hydrogenase seems to be fermentative hydrogen evolution. Moreover, our data suggests that marine surface waters could be an interesting source of oxygen-resistant uptake hydrogenases. The respective genes occur in coastal as well as open ocean habitats and we presume that they are used as additional energy scavenging devices in otherwise nutrient limited environments. The membrane-bound H2-evolving hydrogenases might be useful as marker for bacteria living inside of marine snow particles.

Abstract
Background Archaea combine bacterial-as well as eukaryotic-like features to regulate cellular processes. Halobacterium salinarum R1 encodes eight leucine-responsive regulatory protein (Lrp)-homologues. The function of two of them, Irp (OE3923F) and lrpA1 (OE2621R), were analyzed by gene deletion and overexpression, including genome scale impacts using microarrays. Results It was shown that Lrp affects the transcription of multiple target genes, including those encoding enzymes involved in amino acid synthesis, central metabolism, transport processes and other regulators of transcription. In contrast, LrpA1 regulates transcription in a more specific manner. The aspB3 gene, coding for an aspartate transaminase, was repressed by LrpA1 in the presence of L-aspartate. Analytical DNA-affinity chromatography was adapted to high salt, and demonstrated binding of LrpA1 to its own promoter, as well as L-aspartate dependent binding to the aspB3 promoter. Conclusion The gene expression profiles of two archaeal Lrp-homologues report in detail their role in H. salinarum R1. LrpA1 and Lrp show similar functions to those already described in bacteria, but in addition they play a key role in regulatory networks, such as controlling the transcription of other regulators. In a more detailed analysis ligand dependent binding of LrpA1 was demonstrated to its target gene aspB3.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We performed a consecutive study on patients with proximal tibial fractures without joint participation to determine the early clinical and radiological outcome. PATIENTS From January 2000 to December 2005, 22 fractures of the proximal and proximal diaphyseal tibia without joint participation were operated on using the new tibia nail. A total of 18 patients (82%) completed full follow-up after 6 weeks and 3 and 6 months. RESULTS Two primary and one secondary malalignment were observed Two of them were initially polytraumatised. Furthermore, two patients developed a delayed union, and one non-union occurred. Risk factors for limited bony consolidation were smoking and an open fracture. Screw or nail breakage did not occur, and no infection was observed.

Abstract
The genome of the archaeon Halobacterium salinarum contains two copies of the pst (phosphate-specific transport) operon, the genes of which are related to well-studied bacterial homologues. Both operons (pst1 and pst2) were shown to be polycistronic and, when under P(i)-limited conditions, transcription initiated 1 bp upstream of the translational starts. Under P(i) saturation, the pst1 operon utilized an additional transcription start site 59 bp upstream of the first one. The leaderless pst1 transcript was found to be more efficiently translated than the leadered transcript. Promoter strengths differed significantly between the two operons and when P(i) levels changed. The basal pst1 promoter activity in P(i)-saturated conditions was minimal while the pst2 promoter was active. In contrast, phosphate limitation induced the pst1 operon threefold more than the pst2 operon. We identified basic and phosphate-dependent cis-acting elements in both promoters. Phosphate-uptake assays conducted with several Pst1 and Pst2 mutant strains revealed differences in the substrate affinities between the two transporters and also suggested that the P(i)-binding proteins PstS1 and PstS2 can interact with either of the two permease subunits of the transporters. The tactic behaviour of wild type and pst-deletion strains showed that the Pst1 transporter plays an important role for phosphate-directed chemotaxis.

Abstract
The A/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. A stable beam of (124)Sn and radioactive beams of (124)La and (107)Sn at 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Small Coulomb effects (DeltaT approximately 0.6 MeV) appear for residue production near the onset of multifragmentation.

Abstract
We introduce an inherently phase-stable setup for coherent two-dimensional femtosecond spectroscopy in noncollinear box geometry using only conventional beam splitters, mirrors, and delay stages. Avoiding diffractive optics, pulse shapers, and active phase-locking loops, our spectroscopy setup is simple, robust, and works for ultrabroad bandwidths in all spectral regimes (infrared, visible, and ultraviolet).

Abstract
Human hantavirus (serotype Puumala) infections are prevalent throughout Europe. The bank vole is the main reservoir of the Puumala virus (PUUV). Between 2001 and 2006, the annual incidences in Germany ranged from 0.1 to 0.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. About half of the cases were reported from the state of Baden-Württemberg (BW) in southwest Germany. In 2007, 1,089 PUUV infections were reported from BW. This reflects an incidence of 10.1:100,000, which is more than 11 times higher than the mean incidence of the previous 6 years. Spatial analysis highlights incidences up to 90:100,000 in the most affected district. The winter season 2006/2007 showed an all time high in reported mean temperature. The previous summer and autumn led to a beech mast year, resulting in favourable feed conditions for bank voles in the winter season 2006/2007. The causes of the observed increase in PUUV infections in 2007 cannot be restricted to known cycles in the bank vole population. Favourable feed conditions, a mild winter and an early onset of spring may have influenced bank vole population size as well as human exposure to infectious rodent excretions. Further epidemiologic studies are necessary to better understand the interaction between environmental factors, occurrence of Puumala virus in bank voles and the risk for human disease.

Abstract
The diagnosis of Anderson-Fabry disease is often delayed or even missed. As severe renal manifestations are a hallmark of alfa-galactosidase A (AGAL) deficiency, we tested the hypothesis that Anderson-Fabry disease is under-recognized among male kidney transplant recipients. This nation-wide study in Austria enrolled 1306 patients (ca 65% of all kidney transplanted males) from 30 kidney centers. AGAL activity was determined from filter paper dried blood spots by a fluorescence assay. A positive screening test was defined by an AGAL activity below 1.5 nmol/h/ml. In patients with a positive blood spot-screening test, AGAL activity was re-examined in peripheral blood leukocytes. Genetic testing for mutations in the GLA gene was performed by sequencing to confirm the diagnosis of Anderson-Fabry disease. Two previously not recognized cases with Anderson-Fabry disease were identified. Our study is the first showing that a diagnosis of Anderson-Fabry disease can be missed even in patients who undergo kidney transplantation. Case-finding strategies may be considered a useful tool for diagnosis of this rare disease that may be somewhat more prevalent among kidney transplant recipients compared with dialysis populations.
