A case of pericardial hemangioma with consumption coagulopathy cured by radiotherapy

An infantile case of pericardial hemangioma with large pericardial effusion and consumption coagulopathy is described. This is the first reported case of pericardial hemangioma cured by radiotherapy.

Ultrastructural study of calcinosis universalis with dermatomyositis

Calcinosis universalis associated with dermatomyositis occurred in a 58-year-old woman. Tissues removed from the sublingual region in the patient were studied by ordinary microscopy, electron microscopy, and an electron-microanalytic method. The calcified materials were distributed on collagen fibers and seemed to have a relationship with foci of fibrinoid degeneration. Moreover, globular and/or membranous structures, considered to originate from the degenerate cells of the stroma, were observed in these calcified zones. Some of them contained electron-dense materials. Therefore, the globular and/or membranous structures were thought to be concerned with initial calcification in this case. Furthermore, irregular bone tissue was formed adjacent to the calcified masses. In addition, the calcified materials were identified by X-ray diffraction examination and electron microscopy as hydroxyapatite.

Neuroepidemiology of acquired immune deficiency syndrome

Neuroepidemiology is that branch of chronic disease epidemiology dealing with disorders that affect the nervous system. The potential for neurological involvement in the diagnosis and pathogenesis of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has recently been noted. The following review outlines the spectrum of neurological conditions seen in AIDS patients to date. These conditions include: infectious central nervous system complications of viral, bacterial, fungal or protozoan origin; noninfectious central nervous system complications such as neoplasms or cerebral vascular accidents, and cranial and peripheral neuropathy. The incidence of neurological abnormalities among AIDS cases may be seriously underestimated due to a delay in the presentation of an overt neurological syndrome and/or the overlooking of subtle neurological signs and symptoms in such an overwhelming systemic disease.

Anxiety and dental caries

It is accepted that emotional stress causes various kinds of degenerative physiological changes. We have assumed that it is important to study the relationship between anxiety and dental caries. Anxiety and personality of children were investigated and oral examinations and questionnaires about their life style were performed. There was statistically a significant relationship between dental caries and anxiety which may be overridden by keeping regular hours. To prevent dental caries, we conclude that more attention should be paid to psychosomatic responses which may cause dental caries.

Intergeneric hybrids between Triticum crassum and Hordeum vulgare

Intergeneric hybrids between Triticum crassum (2n=6x=42) and Hordeum vulgare cv. 'Bomi' were obtained at a frequency of 15% of pollinated florets. Meiotic chromosome pairing in the hybrids was not different from that observed in a polyhaploid of T. crassum indicating negligible pairing between chromosomes of the two species and secondly that the genome of H. vulgare had no effect on intergenomic pairing in T. crassum.

In vitro propagation and chromosome doubling of a Triticum crassum x Hordeum vulgare intergeneric hybrid

In vitro culture of inflorescence tissue of a Triticum crassum (6x) x Hordeum vulgare cv. 'Bomi' (2x) intergeneric hybrid resulted in the proliferation of totipotent callus from which plants were regenerated. Regeneration was also achieved from immature inflorescence callus of T. crassum but not from H. vulgare. T. crassum x H. vulgare regenerates had a somatic chromosome number of 28, identical to that of the original hybrid. Four chimeric plants with a partially doubled chromosome number were obtained by in vitro colchicine treatment of hybrid callus prior to induction of plant regeneration. All T. crassum regenerates had 35 chromosomes rather than the expected number of 42. Meiotic analysis of a 35-chromosome plant revealed an extremely abnormal meiosis which might be attributable to a complete disturbance in meiotic control system(s) including that of meiotic pairing.

Somatic hybridization between Nicotiana rustica and N. tabacum. III. Biochemical, morphological, and cytological analysis of somatic hybrids

The hybrid nature of parasexually produced plants of Nicotiana rustica L. + N. tabacum L. has been verified by biochemical, morphological, and cytological analysis. The isozyme banding patterns for esterase, aspartate aminotransferase, and superoxide dismutase of 10 somatic hybrid lines were compared with the parent species. The banding patterns were complex and for any given enzyme they varied among the hybrid lines. For each enzyme assayed a number of isozyme bands derived from both parental species were found in the hybrids. The aspartate aminotransferase zymogram of the hybrids was particularly interesting consisting of a unique hybrid band and also a dense band which appeared as a result of the presence of both parental bands. Leaf and flower morphology of a further 17 hybrid plant lines was analyzed and found to be generally intermediate with respect to the parents though the variability between lines was great considering the small statistical sample. A heterosis effect for plant vigor and height was observed among one-third of the lines. Self-fertility was low among the hybrid lines with only two yielding viable seeds. Only one hybrid line had the expected chromosome complement of 96; all the others contained less. The chromosome complement of the hybrids was unstable ranging from 2n = 68 to 96 between different lines and also varied among different members of the same line ranging from 2n = 68 to 92. The genetic instability indicated by variable chromosome complements can account for the variability found in the biochemical and morphological analyses.

Prevention of dental caries by acupuncture

By acupuncture stimulation (at the Chinese meridian point), the total number of oral Streptococci and the caries-pathogenic bacteria, Streptococcus mutans, in the rats were decreased. The anti-RC-20 (Streptococcus mutans) titer of the rat serum increased as the result of acupuncture stimulation. Rat caries induced by a caries induced by a caries-inducing diet (6-PWV) was reduced by acupuncture stimulation.
