Abstract
Nephrotic syndrome developed in two children who carried hepatitis B virus. Both their serums contained hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg). Two physicochemically and immunologically different categories of HBeAg activity were identified in their serums--i.e., small molecular (free) and large molecular (associated with IgG). Their kidney-biopsy specimens disclosed pathologic changes typical of membranous glomerulonephritis. By a fluorescent-antibody technic, HBeAg was found to be deposited in diffuse granular fashion, along glomerular capillary walls together with IgG and beta1C, but no deposition of hepatitis B surface antigen was detected. The presence of HBeAg in association with IgG both in the serum and in the kidneys of these patients suggests that HBeAg caused membranous glomerulonephritis by inducing the formation and deposition of immune complexes.

Abstract
Liver tissue infected with hepatitis B virus was homogenized and nuclei were separated by centrifugation. Hepatitis B core particles were obtained from the nucleus by the digestion with pronase followed by ultracentrifugation in a sucrose density gradient. Hepatitis B core particles were then treated with sodium dodecyl sulphate and 2 mercaptoethanol and tested for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) by the haemagglutination method. The antigenicity of HBeAg was clearly demonstrated in hepatitis B core particles so treated, although untreated core particles did not reveal any detectable HBeAg activity. The localization of HBeAg in hepatitis B core particles was further supported by the results of a fluorescent antibody technique. When a frozen section of the liver infected with hepatitis B virus was stained with the specific rabbit antibody against HBeAg labelled with fluorescent isothiocyanate, only nuclei of hepatocytes were stained, in a similar distribution to hepatitis B core antigen visualized by fluorescent antibody against hepatitis B core antigen in a nearby section.

Abstract
The authors encountered an outbreak of acute hepatitis in a public institute for mentally retarded children in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Studies revealed that the probable vehicles of transmission of infection were contaminated water, contaminated meals, and close contact. From the clinical manifestations and epidemiological investigations of 41 affected children and staff members, an outbreak of hepatitis A was strongly suspected. Immune electron microscopy disclosed hepatitis A virus antigen particles in the stool specimens collected during the few days before and after peak transaminase elevation. Hepatitis A antigen was further extracted and purified. The antigen was the first reported recovery of the virus from a natural outbreak of hapatitis A in Asia. Subsequently, with the immune adherence hemagglutination test, using this extracted antigen, an increase in titer of antibody to hepatitis A antigen was demonstrated. Thus, this epidemic was serologically established as an outbreak of hepatitis A. Human immune serum globulin for the protection against hepatitis A was administrated to the 80 individuals concerned, and it was effective in preventing the clinical manifestation of hepatitis.

Abstract
Liver specimens of 31 autopsied cases of liver cirrhosis who had had detectable levels of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) inthe serum were stained for hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBSAg) by the direct immunofluorescence method. Their premortem serum samples were tested for HBSAg, antibody to HBSAg (anti-HBS) and anti-HBC. Persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection as judged by circulating and/or liver HB antigens was identified in 18 patients, and all of them revealed a high titer of anti-HBC ranging from 2(11) to 2(16) by the immune adherence hemagglutination method. In contrast, anti-HBC titer of the remaining 13 patients without detectable HB antigens was less than 2(9), and the geometric mean titer of anti-HBC of the patients with persistent HBV infection was significantly higher than that of the patients without (13.9+/-1.55 versus 7.23+/-1.30; t test, P less than 0.001). A combination of circulating anti-HBS and hepatic HB antigens was found in one patient, whose serum revealed an anti-HBC titer of 2(12). On the basis of these results, a high titer of anti-HBC in the serum (immune adherence hemagglutination titer of 2(11) or more) seems to be a reliable indicator of persistent HBV infection in the liver.

Abstract
From the comparative studies of the virulence of several vaccinia virus strains by intrathalamic inoculation into cynomolgus monkeys, the following results were observed. The CV1 virus was most virulent, the New York City Board of Health, Ikeda, EM63, and Lister viruses were slightly less virulent, and DIs and LC16 viruses least virulent. The characteristic findings were widespread inflammatory lesions in the meninges and choroid plexus which were closely associated with the replication of vaccinia virus, and parenchymal lesions which might be referred to a encephalopathy in the deceased monkeys. Meningoencephalitis was, however, ofter recognized in the monkeys sacrificed at 14 days postinoculation and those dying late.

Abstract
1. Because of the importance of nutrition of the intervertebral disc in relation to its disorders, a detailed study has been made of the neighbouring vasculature of the vertebral body. 2. This has been made possible by an injection technique involving prevention of leakage by freezing with liquid nitrogen. 3. By this method capillary beds are found in the vertebral end-plate cartilage in the adult. A very fine subchondral post-capillary venous network has been demonstrated draining by short vertical tributaries to a much coarser horizontal collecting vein system connecting with the familiar basivertebral system. 4. This arrangement may be of special importance in the nutrition of the intervertebral disc.
